RESTAURANT REVIEW
El Dorado: Colombian cuisine with French panache By Jananne Abel
I
t is disappointing to report the demise of Tamarind, Port Chester’s Asian fusion restaurant and martini bar at 112 North Main St., but BJ El Dorado Bar and Restaurant, which has taken its place, also has some darn good food and at reasonable prices. Billed on their menu as having international cuisine, it is actually largely Colombian. There are also a few Mexican dishes and one French preparation.
A new partnership was formed to bring about the opening of BJ El Dorado. Colombian-born Fernando Bonilla teamed up with Maxima Moran, his wife’s cousin, and Barat Patel, one of the owners of Tandoori Indian restaurant, also on North Main. Patel is left over from the trio that originally started Tamarind. “Everybody knows Mexican and Peruvian food,” said Bonilla, who is managing the restaurant. “Nobody knows Colombian food.” “My idea is to bring food from different regions of Colombia,” said Bonilla, noting that most Colombian restaurants only feature dishes from the city of Medellin. “We eat a lot of corn, vegetables and fruits,” said Bonilla, and the sauces are made out of fruits like
coconuts. There is also a lot of shrimp and lobster. “I was always looking for a place where I could do my food in a different way—bring from different parts of the country but using the French style,” said Bonilla, who has been in the restaurant business for 18 years. “Right now we’re in the process of bringing people in,” said Bonilla. While the restaurant has a healthy late night bar business, only a few tables were filled with diners when we visited. “It took a while to find the right chefs,” said Bonilla. He now feels he has the right combination in Gustavo Vasquez of Port Chester and Hector Orosco of White Plains. Both were born in Colombia. Gustavo has a lot of experience preparing French food, said

Background Born in Cali, Colombia, Bonilla emigrated to the United States at 17. “I was always against people taking advantage of others,” he said. He hated the abuse and social discrimination that occurred. Since he was outspoken, he was forced to leave his country and came to the U.S. “where there is freedom and you are entitled to give your opinion. That’s why I love this country,” he said. Bonilla, 46, got a degree in
electronics from the now-defunct PSI in Manhattan but soon learned that he wasn’t suited to working with circuit boards. “I like talking to people,” he said. In repairing sound systems for restaurants and nightclubs, he found his calling. He managed a few restaurants in Queens, Our Place, El Molino and Los Remolinos in Port Chester and Latin Place in Stamford before heading to Kendall, Fla. He missed his son from his first marriage, now 16, and moved back North, now living in Greenwich. He is remarried and also has two other children, ages 5 and 7 months.
