cademic burnout is a growing issue for students across the U.S. Far from being “the best years of our lives,” most will recount that high school was like living on a conveyor belt of SAT tests, extracurriculars, and self-doubts while under extreme pressure to rack up achievements that might help you to stand out from the crowd. Students graduate with a sigh of relief, hopefully anticipating a future full of opportunities, only to be body-slammed by another four years of even more intense academic pressure. Some students roll with the punches and learn to juggle essays and schedules and “adulting,” but a growing number are being left behind. Anxiety, depression, and even suicide rates skyrocket for US and Canadian teens in their first year of university (www. macleans.ca/education/uniandcollege/the-mental-health-crisis-oncampus/). Launching from a high-pressure high school directly into higher-pressure university is proving increasingly difficult for some young people to handle successfully. But of course, how could a young person ever hope to be successful at life and academia when they haven’t taken the time to decide what ‘success’ looks like to them? Absent self-awareness to inform their choices and life-experience to demonstrate their own particular genius, perhaps the answer to this growing crisis is simple: take some time off, already! Who says that education can’t continue outside of a classroom? Do we really need to immediately follow up the four-years and four-walls of high school with four more years of university? The statistics suggest that we shouldn’t. At our current rate, 53% of university students still have not completed their Bachelors Degree within six years, meaning there’s work to be done. (www.nytimes.com/2016/06/02/upshot/why-collegestudents-drop-out-follow-the-dollars.html) As a way of combating this issue, many universities are beginning to encourage their applicants to take a Gap Year before arrival, citing the many academic and personal benefits that Gap Year alumni possess when entering academia. The idea of the Gap Year was created with the intention of allowing students time to explore the world, to get in 192

touch with their passions, and to mature before pursuing higher education. It is rare to find high school graduates who truly know what they want for their future. They might have a foggy idea, but most have never experienced enough life outside of their family home to know not only what kindles their fire, but also what they can get paid for and hopefully even what the world needs. The best way to discover a lifelong passion is to get out in the world and explore. Ask questions. Try new things. Learn a new language. Stop worrying about test scores and start worrying about what you truly want to do with the next ten/twenty/thirty years of your life: “Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive and go do it. Because what the world truly needs is people who have come alive.” – Howard Thurman On average, 98% of Gap Year students reported that their year helped them to develop as a person. Personal anecdotes and some peer-reviewed studies have shown that students who take a Gap Year are likely to increase in maturity and will enter university confident in their abilities as adults. It’s not hard to see why. While most students leave home the day they move into their dorms, Gap Year students have spent a year traveling the world and learning selfsufficiency. Most have also spent a good deal of time planning and

saving money for their Gap Year, learning valuable life skills along the way. With these experiences under their belts, moving onto a university campus is less like moving into a new world and more like one more step along a greater journey. Without the stress of learning how to “adult,” students can spend more time focusing on their studies and less time panicking over how to balance a budget. According to the 2015 National Gap Year Alumni Survey, (Hoe, Nina PhD, Institute for Survey Research, 2016), after taking a Gap Year students are more likely to know what direction they’d like to take in life. 77% of Gappers felt that their time away helped them to find a purpose in life and led them towards a career they were passionate about. Gap Year programs are designed to help students to get hands-on with the world and

leadership roles on campus, while also choosing to study a topic with which they’re more connected. These students are more likely to stick with their original major of choice and more likely to have a game plan for life after graduation. As a result, Gappers are often well equipped to handle the new workload and to perform at the top of their game. Studies have shown that students who took a Gap Year almost always over performed academically in college, usually to a statistically significant degree, and most importantly, the positive effect of taking a Gap Year was demonstrated to endure over all four years. (nordic.businessinsider.com/benefitsof-a-taking-a-gap-year-2016-9/) Worried that your student might never return from her Gap Year? Don’t be. According to three separate studies, 90% of students who took a Gap Year returned to college within a year. (wsj.com/articles/SB THINKING BEYOND BORDERS CROSS CULTURAL SOLUTIONS 10001424052970203513204576047 723922275698). Most students set goals during their Gap Year and use their college years to achieve them. Universities have begun to notice the academic success of Gap Year students. As time goes on and these statistics hold, universities are making it easier for their applicants to take a Gap Year. Across the U.S., no fewer than 160 colleges and universities have begun to embrace to find ways to apply those experiences to their daily lives. As a the idea of a Gap Year. Here’s what alumni students and parents say: “The Global Gap Year gave me the time and unique experiences necessary to hone my interests and figure out how I wanted to spend my time in college. Before arriving at Georgetown, I wasn’t really sure which path of study to take; there were so many options that interested me, and TBB helped me find connections among these interests, which translated into a plan of action in college. My interest in healthcare management is a product of my time with TBB in South Africa, where I first experienced studying health problems and working with patients every day.” – Nick Gardiner, Thinking Beyond Borders Alum “After TBB, Lucy went on to her freshman year of college and took classes that were meaningful to her, not just classes that filled a requirement. She finished the year with all A’s and, more importantly, she was more engaged with her college classroom experience because of the time spent traveling with TBB. Ultimately, her college experience is more valuable as a result of the gap year with TBB.” – Betsy Blankenbaker, Thinking Beyond Borders Alum Parent thinkingbeyondborders.org info@thinkingbeyondborders.org 203.993.0236

WHERE THERE BE DRAGONS

THE LEADER IN CROSS-CULTURAL + EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION SINCE 1993 Mapmakers once drew Dragons to represent lands unknown. Bold explorers who ventured beyond the map’s edge were said to go “where there be dragons”… Dragons offers summer and semester programs in 19 countries, each one custom-crafted by instructor teams who bring their unique vision and expertise to the course design. Our educators are united by a mission of nurturing understanding across borders through authentic cultural exchange. Our goal is to help participants develop the self-awareness and cross-cultural competencies to be active participants in the world. What makes a Dragons course different? Small Groups: A typical Dragons group consists of 12 students and 3 instructors. This 4:1 student-to-instructor ratio ensures that we are able to individually challenge and support every student with careful mentorship. Professional Instructors: We work with the best international guides and educators in the industry. Our instructors are carefully selected based on their group facilitation skills, local language fluency, regional experience in the country, and their connections with our host communities. Typically, when a Dragons instructor team heads into the field they collectively represent at least four languages, multiple citizenships, ten or more years of in-country experience, and 300+ field days managing student groups abroad. Authentic Immersion: We travel like locals, live with families, apprentice with artists, and learn from scholars, factory workers, sages, and community leaders alike. Our goal is to connect participants to a direct experience of a different place through hands-on and meaningful engagement. Dynamic Itinerary Design: Our participants learn by doing. Dragons itineraries are flexible to create space for unscripted, serendipitous, and candid moments of surprise and discovery. The world is constantly changing and we believe our programs should too. Backpacks, not roller bags, are on the packing list because it’s a novel combination of gravel roads, local transportation, and dirt paths that make each program an original adventure. Ethical Travel: We think it’s important to travel responsibly. We define ethical travel as environmentally conscientious, culturally selfaware, and focused on developing mutually meaningful connections with local communities. Dragons has over 25 years of experience guiding groups and managing risk in the context of international education. In more than two decades of operations, we’ve established crucial risk management relationships with International SOS, key locallybased safety and security officials, and a global network of reputable health care professionals and hospitals. Dragons has collaborated to design custom programming for Carleton College, The Thacher School, Milton Academy, and Princeton University, in addition to partnerships with over 50 other esteemed schools and universities. HOPKINS

THE IDEAL SCHOOL OF MANHATTAN

Hopkins is an independent, coeducational day school of 714 students in grades 7-12. Located on a 108-acre campus overlooking New Haven, the School takes pride in its distinguished faculty and a dedicated staff. We define ourselves as a community of civility and learning, one that educates students from diverse backgrounds to a full measure of their talents and humanity. Together, we seek to: • develop in our young people the habits of mind of scholars as the foundation for a lifelong love of learning • foster the courage to live and think as distinct individuals who embrace their responsibilities in the larger world • expose every student to the deep satisfaction that derives from service to others • enlarge the educational experience to include the creative joy and aesthetic sensibility of the artist, and the vitality and competitive spirit of the athlete • provide, through the School’s advisers, the wisdom and goodwill necessary to guide our young people to confident self-reliance • nurture the development of character essential to leading a rich and purposeful life These tenets are made manifest in the daily life of the School and in the hopes and ambitions we share as an educational community. Taken as a whole, these values provide us both definition and direction as we strive to fulfill Hopkins’ mission. Hopkins School, 986 Forest Rd, New Haven, CT 06515 hopkins.edu

New York City, NY

The IDEAL School of Manhattan is the only independent, K-12, inclusion school in NYC. IDEAL’s mission is to affirm and accept the full identities of all people, while inspiring academic excellence, creative leadership, and a desire to build a more just and equitable world. IDEAL is built on the principles of diversity and inclusion. Every aspect of the IDEAL experience — instruction, assessment, program, enrichment — reflects a research-based commitment to inclusion

education as a means for academic excellence. Because IDEAL teachers know their students as individuals in and out of the classroom, they are able to design instruction that builds upon the unique talents and strengths of the learners in their room. Rather than a one-size-fits-all curriculum, differentiated instruction allows students to pursue the same subjects at multiple levels of complexity. Supportive faculty, low student-to-teacher ratios, small class sizes, and teams of experienced general educators and learning specialists create a learning community where every student can succeed and every student has a voice. Furthermore, at IDEAL, no one leaves their identity at the door. IDEAL’s curriculum and programs are multicultural by design, and social justice and anti-bias instruction are both infused throughout the curriculum and given dedicated instructional time. Experiential learning opportunities including a signature eighth grade trip to Alabama, a rich experience in the Arts, and a differentiated Athletic program round out the IDEAL experience. IDEAL’s unique program cultivates empathy and collaboration. With the confidence that comes from being known and celebrated, students not only strive for excellence in their own academic and personal pursuits, but they also support and encourage their peers in their endeavors and accomplishments. At IDEAL, we are proud of our mission and the way inclusion fosters compassionate students who are not afraid to take risks and who develop not only the desire but also the leadership skills to create a more just and equitable world. Please visit our website at theidealschool.org to learn more about IDEAL and to sign up for an Open House or a Tuesday Tour. theidealschool.org 314 West 91st Street, NYC, 10024 (212) 769-1699

FORK UNION MILITARY ACADEMY

MARINE MILITARY ACADEMY

Nestled in the heart of central Virginia in a beautiful rural setting, Fork Union Military Academy is a unique sanctuary for learning and achievement. Founded in 1898, Fork Union has remained true to its mission for more than a century developing and inspiring young men in a demanding college preparatory environment, and challenging them to excel in the classroom, on the athletic fields, and in their daily lives. Fork Union Military Academy’s rigorous admission standards, high academic expectations, and focus on achievement help outstanding young men develop, compete, and accomplish even more than they thought possible. In our safe and structured academic environment, based on Christian values, young men develop the qualities of character, self-discipline, respect, and leadership essential for success in life. As a private school, we can structure our curriculum (such as our unique One Subject Plan for the Upper School) to meet the needs of our students. We can preserve our single-sex environment to remove social distractions that come with a coeducational school. We can acknowledge and honor the Christian values that provide the moral compass for our daily lives. As a boarding school, we can facilitate profound and long-lasting change in the life of a young man. Structure and discipline become the norms of his life, not merely the constraints he must put up with for the relatively few hours of his school day. Responsibility and respect for others are lessons learned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at Fork Union–not just for a few hours on weekdays. Our success shows in the lives of our graduates, whether it is our 100% college acceptance rate, the hundreds of student-athletes who have gone on to play in college and at the professional level including two Heisman Trophy winners (Vinny Testaverde and Eddie George) and twelve NFL first-round draft picks, the more than three dozen seniors earning appointments to our nation’s top service academies in the past ten years, or well-known entrepreneurs like Kevin Plank, the founder of Under Armour. We invite you to learn more about Fork Union Military Academy and all we have to offer boys in grades 7 through 12 as well as our one-year postgraduate program. Find out how your son can graduate with a high school and an Associate’s Degree through our partnership with Richard Bland Community College. Visit us at forkunion.com or call us at 800-GO-2-FUMA (800-462-3862) to learn more.

Harlingen, TX

Marine Military Academy is a college-preparatory boarding school for boys in grades 8-12 with an optional post-graduate year. Since 1965, MMA is the only private school in the world based on the traditions and values of the U.S. Marine Corps. Located in Harlingen, Texas, MMA has educated thousands of sons from across the world and is home to the historic Iwo Jima Monument. MMA’s mission is to develop disciplined, morally strong, college-ready young men. MMA accomplishes this by applying the Marine Corps philosophy to a college-preparatory curriculum. This comprehensive approach results in academic, physical and moral growth. MMA’s proven educational model offers adolescent males several advantages over other private and/or boarding schools. •The highly structured, disciplined and distraction-free setting makes it possible for boys to focus on their schoolwork and form crucial study habits so they earn higher grades. •The safe and healthy environment allows boys to learn from principled role models with high expectations, and experience positive peer pressure from friends. •The exceptional military program prepares and positions boys for service academy appointments. •The military system teaches boys time management, teamwork, goalsetting and problem-solving skills so they can continuously achieve. •The upright Marine Corps behaviors shape the character, attitude and work ethic of boys so they transform into honorable young men and leaders. •The scholastic program offers STEM-based electives, such as flight training and CyberPatriot, to reinforce STEM studies and introduce boys to the STEM career fields. In the summer, MMA holds a four-week, military adventure camp for school boys ages 12-18. MMA Summer Camp is highly physical and tightly structured. In 28 days, campers participate in more than 30 military challenges and sports — from archery to mud diving, from paintball to ziplining. MMA also offers a simultaneous English language immersion camp. At ESL Summer Camp, boys study English in the classroom and then practice it during the adventure camp activities. MMA was founded by Capt William A. Gary, an Arizona rancher and retired Marine Corps reservist. In 1963, Capt Gary could not find a school for his son that embraced the ideology of the Marine Corps… so he started one. When MMA opened in 1965, it was home to six boys. Today, it is home to more than 250 boys from all points of the country and world. For more information on MMA or its summer camp programs, visit MMA-TX.org (956) 423-6006 or email admissions@MMA-TX.org

UNIVERSITIES

There is a leader in you. Find him at Hargrave. As the only military school in Virginia to be named a National School of Character in 2016, Hargrave Military Academy is both a nationally and internationally-recognized premier college preparatory boarding school for boys from grade seven to postgraduate. Since 1909, the academy’s four pillars of academics, spiritual growth, character development, and athletics have served as the foundation for the institution’s success. Each pillar combines to form a complete and competitive individual who understands what it takes to succeed in today’s demanding, diverse society. Character traits for life that are instilled and discussed with Cadets include: trustworthiness, commitment, punctuality, respect, honesty and citizenship. The competition for college acceptance has never been tougher, and students and their parents are constantly searching for ways to give themselves an edge in the process. Attending a military boarding school not only sets your college application apart from the rest, but it also provides the foundation for success after college and into the future. The rigorous academic curriculum and low student to teacher ratios at boarding schools prepare students for success. The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS) reports that 87% of boarding school students report being very well prepared for college academically, which is a greater percentage than those who attend private day or public schools. Accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools, and nationally-accredited by AdvancED, Hargrave provides a traditional classroom experience, as well as differentiated nontraditional learning. The Academy also provides opportunities for working with fellow students on teamwork projects and hands-on applications through the General Colin Powell Leadership and Ethics Program. This one of a kind multi-faceted program combines formal academic leadership studies with practical application. Students have abundant opportunity to work through a variety of moral and ethical leadership scenarios, placing the student in the shoes of the actual decision makers and leaders. The learning process is further enhanced with the incorporation of technology via the Technology Lab, allowing students to develop their computer skills as well as also offering the chance to work independently. The curriculum includes a foundation of courses that allow students to apply to small liberal arts colleges and state institutions, to highly-selective colleges and US Service Academies. At Hargrave Military Academy, a community of educators and hard-working professionals believe that academic excellence means so much more than simply having good grades. “For my child, Eagle Hill was... a life raft.

Our son was always a thoughtful, sensitive, socially-appropriate boy but he started to sink quickly in kindergarten, and by first grade it was obvious his learning differences were significant. His self-esteem was suffering. His frustration and anxiety levels were rising. Once we found Eagle Hill, it was clearly the perfect place for him. The teachers at Eagle Hill respected and understood him for who he was as a learner. Year by year we watched him blossom into a more confident young man who understands his learning needs and is driven to be successful. The relief we felt knowing Eagle Hill had Oliver’s best interests at heart every day, knowing when to hold back and when to push him to achieve a higher level, making him feel secure and amazing about his accomplishments, is beyond words. Eagle Hill helped create who he is today–a secure self-advocating young man who enjoys school and learning.” — Parents of EHS Graduate

Clark University alumnus Matt Goldman ’83, M.B.A. ’84, motivates himself with three words:

The Blue Man Group founders (l. to r.) Phil Stanton, Chris Wink and Matt Goldman.

MAKE IDEAS REAL. In 1987 that simple mission statement drove him to co-found Blue Man Group, whose raucous and wry stagecraft turned the troupe’s signature art into a cultural touchstone.

The same spirit for inventive enterprise that drives Matt Goldman recently earned Clark a #16 ranking on Forbes magazine’s list of the nation’s most entrepreneurial research universities.

Matt and his partners have since turned their energies to Blue School, the Manhattan elementary and middle school he co-founded in 2007. The school reimagines education in a changing world by creating communities of learners “who use courageous and innovative thinking to build a harmonious and sustainable world.”

Matt exemplifies the Clark University motto, “Challenge Convention. Change Our World,” which inspires all Clarkies to make ideas real. Here, we regard the status quo and say, “We can do better.” Can you?
