our chosen path Founding Values for a New Century!
Dear Friends, In 1913, two friends who had found their way as adults to Pasadena—one from Chicago and one from New York—met at tea. Margaret Brackenridge had determined to establish a school for girls on the west ridge of Pasadena, and she knew of her friend Mary Ranney’s talents as an educator. So she seized the opportunity then and there, to ask Mary Ranney to become the founding headmistress of the school she envisioned. As Margaret Brackenridge later wrote, “then and there, over the clatter of teacups,” Westridge became a reality. 100 years later, a school that began in a shingled house at 324 Madeline Drive has grown and thrived and changed with the challenges of each decade, and yet, the early founding values that reflected Mary Ranney’s convictions about educating girls shine through, as our alma mater says, “in whatever things we do.” Mary Lowther Ranney chose the path of a single, professional woman, an educator, an architect, and an advocate for women’s rights. Her own path has inspired generations of girls and women to seek and to follow paths of their own. As we approach the Celebration of the Century in March 2014, we hope your paths will lead you back to Westridge. For ten decades, Westridge has responded to the challenge of Surgere Tentamus by rising, always rising. Join us in celebrating the 100 year adventure that is Westridge School, and see how we have exceeded tenfold the early dream of our founders. Join us to rediscover, reconnect and be inspired! Surgere!

day
Reunion Day
Master Classes for ALUMNAE
10 a.m.–5 p.m. Valet parking in State Street parking lot. Disabled drop-off at West Madeline Drive gate.
11 a.m. and 12 p.m. Both classes are held simultaneously from 11 a.m.– 11:45 a.m. and again from 12 p.m.–12:45 p.m.
Alumnae Welcome and Registration
A Conversation with Place
10 a.m. Madeline Court
Led by John Cross, 7th Grade English and Upper School Creative Writing Braun Music Center
On Centennial Alumnae Day every Westridge alumna is invited to return and remember. Alumnae are invited to participate in engaging master classes taught by current faculty; a combined current and past Glee Club performance, and to enjoy campus architectural tours. This year, former faculty and staff will take part in their own reunion and celebrate with former students and colleagues as the Westridge family reconnects on a grand scale.
In 1967, Allen Ginsberg and friends tried to levitate the Pentagon through the powers of meditation and imagination. Their effort supposedly failed. Let’s gather together, seek inspiration from Elizabeth Bishop, Stanley Plumly, and Robert Frost, and each other, and engage this place, Westridge School, in conversation, levitating ourselves in the process. Gaston Bachelard, in The Poetics of Space, proves “that imagination augments the values of reality.” Gary Zukav, exploring the world of quantum mechanics, acknowledges that “what we experience is not external reality, but our interaction with it.” Let’s play with observation, awe, and transformation.
celebrating a century of Westridge women
Deconstructing the Harem
Led by Sandy de Grijs, Upper School History Elizabeth Edmundson Herrick Commons Although little understood in the West, the Middle Eastern female social structure called the Harem has long been a subject of mystery and fascination. In this class we will examine and deconstruct Western perceptions of the Harem in an effort to see ways in which spaces and places reserved exclusively for women (and girls) can be sources of empowerment.
Reunion for Faculty and Staff, Past and Present
11:30 a.m.–12:45 p.m. The Pitcairn House, Lawn and Patio Past and present faculty, staff, and administrators gather for a reunion in Pitcairn House. Attendees are invited to join their students and colleagues for the Alumnae Reunion Luncheon in the Centennial tent on Frank Field.

Frank Field During the luncheon, guests will journey back in time to the Inlook Tea Fashion Show— a lighthearted review of Westridge graduation dresses through the generations—the good, the bad and…the rest. Surgere Tentamus “Surgere Tentamus” We strive to rise in deed And may our Latin motto Help to spur us on full speed. So it’s “Surgere Tentamus” For Westridge one and all, And it’s “Surgere Tentamus” Our watchword and our call. Yet within our Latin motto Lies a hidden meaning, too, And we strive to learn its lesson In whatever things we do. So it’s “Surgere Tentamus” For Westridge one and all, And it’s “Surgere Tentamus” Our watchword and our call.
