Westridge School

stateme nt of purpo se

The fundamental purpose of Westridge School is to develop in girls their intellectual and creative powers and their unique qualities as individuals. Essential to the school’s purpose is the commitment to be a community that reflects and values diversity, respects individual differences, and responds to a changing dynamic world. An intellectually engaging and challenging curriculum prepares students to continue their education in college and beyond as discerning, motivated learners who are committed to excellence and goodness in everything they do. The program offers balance among humanities, mathematics and sciences, visual and performing arts, technology and athletics. A Westridge education offers both a path to self-discovery and personal fulfillment and an awareness of the essential interdependence of all peoples, places, and cultures. Westridge strives to develop young women whose joy in learning, personal integrity, courage, compassion, and commitment to ethical action and social and environmental responsibility, will lead them to meaningful lives as contributing citizens of the larger world.

The Westridge Centennial, celebrated throughout the 2013-2014 school year, was a glorious moment for our school; a singular opportunity to reach across generations, to celebrate our shared history, and to reflect on our founding values and commitments that connect our past with our present, and prepare us for our future.

We would also like to acknowledge how grateful we are that during our Centennial year we exceeded our Annual Fund goal with more than $1 million in contributions. Over the last two years the Annual Fund has grown by 20 percent as a result of the innovative and incredibly generous Wagener Family Match. We are indebted to our generous donors who recognize the central role that philanthropy plays in maintaining the strength and excellence of the educational experience we can provide our students.

As alumnae, current students and their families, faculty and staff and friends came together, we were reminded of the unique role that Westridge has played within the Pasadena community, and in the lives of thousands of young women who have found their voice at Westridge and gone on to make their marks on the greater world. Westridge was founded in 1913 by Mary Lowther Ranney and a dedicated group of parents who wanted a college preparatory education for their daughters— an education that promoted intellectual curiosity and confidence in the leadership roles that women could assume. These founding principles underscore all that has been accomplished in subsequent years, accomplishments made possible through the dedication and philanthropic support of those who have believed in the philosophy and mission of our school. As you read this Annual Report, we hope that you will enjoy the glimpse of the highlights from our Centennial year, and appreciate the joy, energy, and thankfulness that marked all of our events and activities. We also trust that you will appreciate those whose gifts to the Endowment and the Annual Fund have provided support for programs and opportunities that are preparing our girls for their futures — in engineering and design, in technology, in ethics, in human development, and in a myriad of ways that develop inquiring minds and inner strength — ways that attest to the value of an all girls’ education at Westridge.

100 and counting

Dear Members of the Westridge Community,

1 As the title of this report states, Westridge is 100 years old and counting. The 100–year anniversary of an institution is a major accomplishment rooted in a vibrant vision carried forward with passion and determination, decade after decade. We cherish the history, the traditions, and the values that distinguish Westridge, but we also know that we must continue to evolve and secure a future for upcoming generations of girls. We are profoundly thankful for our community of friends and supporters who are united by the goal of helping girls find their unique voices and chosen paths, now and in the years to come. In gratitude,

Jennifer T. Lum Chair, Board of Trustees

Elizabeth J. McGregor Head of School

2 Westridge’s centennial year was an extraordinary opportunity to celebrate and reflect on our central role in girls’ education. Generations of students and adults have left their mark on Westridge and, together, they are a powerful reminder of the value of educating informed, articulate, and creative young women and establishing a strong legacy of leadership and service. The events of the year, and its centerpiece Centennial Weekend, were a beautiful tribute to the school’s history. They were also a vibrant representation of the energy and courageousness found at Westridge, and a testament to the special nature of this community. The school was honored to welcome more than 2,000 community members to share this historic milestone. Thousands more, who have provided their passion, voice, and support to Westridge over the decades, were here in spirit. We are grateful to have shared this special time in the history of our school with you.

Highlights from the first year of Westridge’s Second Century

4

Several important courses returned to the program last year. > The Global Issues course, in which students examine “megaissues” of our times from environmental degradation to economic globalization, was reinstated in 2013-2014. > With a newly revamped curriculum, AP Biology once again met our goals for deep student learning. It replaced Cellular Molecular Biology and Ecology & Evolution, which were taught in lieu of AP Biology at Westridge for 6 years.

The school’s goal of expanding programs to support girls’ social and emotional wellness was forwarded. Peer-to-Peer, a course that helps students develop skills in peer counseling and outreach — skills put to use for the benefit of the Westridge community — joined the Upper School roster of electives. The program already has added an advanced course. n

Westridge enters the next phase of its history at an incredibly exciting time in the field of education. More and more research, on such topics as how girls learn and the way in which the brain works, is available to inform our work. Entirely new avenues of teaching and learning are opening through progress in educational technology. Our inspiring and dedicated faculty is committed to advancing our curriculum while staying true to those core values and tenets that make a Westridge education so unique and powerful. Following is a sampling of updates and successes from the 2013-2014 school year.

Upper School leadership group Student Voices’ work in multiculturalism and inclusion continued to expand. Topics in the student-led “Cultural Conversations” series included “Age & Voice,” “Family Structures,” “Language & Word Choice Awareness,” “Privilege and Socioeconomics,” and “Evolution of Gender Roles over Westridge’s 100 Year History.” n

In the Middle School, Moon Parties were a wonderful new means to build enthusiasm for astronomy with both students and parents. The first party involved telescopes, cookies, and 15 students. One month later, strong word of mouth brought out 70 adults and students to the Moon Party Potluck. n

The Middle School Debate Team continued to grow and was proud to host its first tournament on the Westridge campus. n

In its second year, the delightful Lower School Petridge, a day devoted to Westridge family pets, service learning, and raising funds for the Pasadena Humane Society and The Kora Project, increased its fundraising and added many new elements (flash mob!, In-n-Out truck!). n

annual highlights

ste m Westridge fielded its first Team America Rocketry Competition (TARC) Club last year. Founded by Maddie E. ’16, the team built individual and team rockets, the latter of which flew at Southern California Rocketry flight events. The team has grown this year, and has been joined by a complementary robotics group, which is working with Vex Robotics equipment. n

te ch nology e nhancing teaching and learn ing Initiatives in digital feedback and blended learning expanded greatly last year. With digital feedback, teachers provide video and audio feedback on student work, allowing for much greater insight into the “why” behind teacher suggestions than is possible in written notes. In blended learning, which occurs in the Middle and Upper Divisions, direct instruction can occur either in class or online (students watch videotaped lectures and demonstrations, which are made by their teacher). Shifting some instruction online allows additional valuable class time to be spent on discussions, one-to-one student/teacher interaction, and collaborative projects based on the video content. n

In the Lower School, the 6th Grade teachers spent a great deal of time and thought preparing for the launch of the 1:1 pilot convertible laptop tablet program in 2014-2015.

n

Wi-Fi expanded campuswide, something that students, faculty, and visitors put to good use! n

Westridge joined the Online School for Girls (OSG), a consortium effort of more than 70 of the top nationally and internationally known independent schools. This strategic partnership allows Westridge to utilize OSG online coursework in ways that support the school’s vision and mission. n

ath leti c s The Tigers had a stellar year with three Prep League titles (the third consecutive in Varsity Tennis, and firsts for Ella P-J ’17 in 500 freestyle swimming and Laura M. ’15 in track and field high jump), one Prep League MVP (Lena T. ’15 in tennis), 14 athletes named 1st Team All League, and a Coach of the Year for the Pacific League (Theresa Mullally, lacrosse). n

6

the arts The Centennial Festival of the Arts was a wonderful statement about the history of excellence in the arts at Westridge. It highlighted visual and performing art from students, alumnae, and current and past faculty, including a curated exhibition with 31 works, and 19 pop-up dance and musical performances featuring nearly 200 students. n

The school’s inaugural Athletics Hall of Fame, established in conjunction with Centennial festivities, was a meaningful milestone for our athletics program. The first inductees —17 in all — spanned the classes of 1931 through 2014, and represented sports ranging from soccer and swimming to table tennis and fencing. n

Two musical compositions were commissioned for the Centennial. Richard Meyer composed “Westridge Overture,” a Centennial anthem debuted by the Chamber Orchestra during the Holiday Concert. Daniel Gawthrop wrote a choral work entitled “From This Sure Place,” which debuted at the 2014 Fall Concert. n

The arts infused our year beyond Centennial festivities as well. Students dazzled in The Miracle Worker, Antigone, Little Women, and The Witch of Blackbird Pond. Of special note was the Upper School Chamber Orchestra’s experiential Interim Week trip during which they were artists-in–residence at Baker Demonstration School in Chicago. The students had collaborated online all year to score original music for fairy tales written by the Baker students, and spent Interim Week bringing the scores to life in Chicago. n

2013-2014 was a year devoted to celebrating our community and what it has made possible for so many girls throughout the decades. The celebration launched with a special Centennial Founder’s Day picnic attended by more than 1,100 alumnae, students, parents, faculty, staff, trustees, parents of alumnae, and friends. n

annual highlights

the westridge community

7 Education at Westridge extends to the adults in our community and last year the Centennial Speakers series brought extraordinary discussions to our campus. Speakers included Rebecca Skloot, author of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks; Martha Adams, producer of Girl Rising, a documentary about the power of girls education to transform societies; and Kristen Kittscher, young adult novelist and former Westridge faculty member. n

The Westridge Parent Association continued its work welcoming all parents into the community and supporting the goals of the school. We were especially grateful last year for their underwriting of our on-campus screening of Girl Rising. n

Because it was not possible for everyone to attend Centennial Weekend, we continued our tradition of regional alumnae get-togethers. Six gatherings from Boston to San Francisco helped our community stay connected. n

Westridge was honored for its role in preserving the traditions and architecture of the area when it was recognized as a “Pillar of South Orange Grove” by Pasadena Heritage. n

Wagener Match Donors

2013-2014 concluded the two-year Wagener Family Annual Fund Match, a program to motivate giving to the Annual Fund for 2012-2013 and 2013-2014. Two-year pledges for new and increased annual fund gifts raised more than $500,000 for the school, an amount that was generously matched with a $500,000 gift to the Westridge endowment by the Wagener family.

“We support the Annual Fund because Westridge creates an environment where the girls find the passion within themselves. Creativity is promoted, compassion is encouraged, and leaders are cultivated.” karen binns, parent

Members of the Young Alumnae Circle are committed to raising awareness about the importance of giving back to Westridge and to reuniting alumnae through social activities and programs. The group is comprised of graduates from the past 10 years, classes of 2003 to 2013. The group’s mission is to: • Recognize recent graduates who make annual fund gifts that set the standard for other young Westridge alumnae. • Create opportunities for young alumnae to network, socialize, and build relationships. • Ensure a strong alumnae community. Parents of Westridge Alumnae, including those whose daughter(s) may have attended Westridge for just a few years, and those whose daughter(s) graduated decades ago or even in 2014, remain strong supporters of our school. The list below includes families with as many as four Westridge alumnae, as well some current families who also have a Westridge graduate. We are grateful to all parents of alumnae who continue to contribute to Westridge. Years in parenthesis indicate the daughters’ class.

The income from Westridge’s endowment is critical to fulfilling its mission. The principal of the endowed funds is left untouched, and each year Westridge allocates a portion of the earnings generated by the portfolio for our highest institutional priorities. This core resource supports ongoing programs as well as specific areas of enrichment. The school is happy to assist families and/or individuals who may wish to create a named endowment or contribute to an existing fund. To learn more about the school’s endowment needs and minimum gift requirements, contact the Advancement Office, 626.799.1053, ext. 252 or philanthrophy@westridge.org.

An Educational Partnership with pasadena public schools

76

Founded in 1990, Partnership for Success! (PFS!), formerly the Skills Enrichment Program, is a partnership between the Pasadena Unified School District and four local independent schools (Polytechnic, Mayfield Junior, Chandler, and Westridge). Each summer, PFS! provides an intensive, five-week enrichment program to approximately 400 publicschool students who are chosen by their school principals based on academic promise and financial need. Once students are nominated in their fourth grade year, they remain in the program for eight consecutive summers. This longterm commitment between PFS! and its students is essential to the program’s success. During their time in PFS!, students build their skills in math, science, and language arts. Virtually all graduates of PFS! go on to attend college, most at fouryear institutions.

Westridge School hosts an all-girls experience for students in grades five and six. During their two summers at Westridge, students take a variety of academic classes to boost their math and verbal skills, preparing for success in middle school. Classes are small (averaging 20 students) and their teachers are joined in the classroom by high school and college-age interns, half of whom are themselves graduates of PFS!. In addition to academic enrichment courses, PFS! students at Westridge have the opportunity to take classes in art, music, multimedia creation, and technology. Field trips provide additional learning opportunities, and the annual Etiquette Tea gives the girls a chance to dress up and attend a special event with a featured speaker. Daily physical education classes and Friday swim days balance the summer days with exercise. For more information, contact DanaĂŤ Howe, Site Director, at 626.799.1053, ext. 239 or dhowe@westridge.org. This program is provided at no cost to the student. Funds are raised from individuals, corporations, and foundations. Contributions are made by the four member schools as well as the Westridge Parent Association and the Summer Opportunities Fair. With the generous support of those listed, this valuable and successful program continues to benefit hundreds of students each year.

Ways of Making a Gift Philanthropy is vital to the support of Westridge School’s mission. The school shares in your belief in its mission to provide the highest quality education to young women, and provides a variety of ways to maximize the impact of your gift. All gifts to Westridge are taxdeductible. Please do not hesitate to contact the Advancement Office with any questions, or to make arrangements for a gift.

78

CASH Current cash gifts are deductible for income tax purposes to the full extent allowed by law, and may be made with cash, checks, or credit card. Pledge payments may be arranged. APPRECIATED SECURITIES If you own stocks or other capital assets that have appreciated in value, a gift of those securities to Westridge can result in significant tax savings. You may be able to obtain a tax deduction for the full value of the gift and avoid paying the tax on the gain you would have were you to sell the asset. MEMORIAL OR HONORARY GIFTS Gifts may be given in honor or memory of a friend or a family member or in recognition of a significant event. UNITED WAY Westridge may be designated as the recipient of your United Way contribution. Simply list the school’s name and address on your United Way pledge form. Processing charges may be imposed by United Way. DONATE YOUR CAR Westridge accepts donation proceeds from many organizations that will purchase your vehicle. A donor may wish to donate their car to these organizations with the eventual proceeds of the sale going to Westridge.

CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITIES* Through the California Community Foundation, Westridge is able to offer charitable gift annuities — a very attractive planned gift. In exchange for a gift of cash or stock you will be paid a guaranteed lifetime income. You also receive an immediate charitable tax deduction and a portion of each income payment is considered to be a tax-free return of principal. INDIVIDUAL RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS Name Westridge as a beneficiary of your retirement plan and leave lesstaxed assets to family. OTHER PLANNED GIFTS* Westridge also accepts planned or deferred gifts through bequests, charitable trusts, life insurance, or pension plans. A donor may wish to consider these gift vehicles as a way to reduce or avoid estate and inheritance taxes. Planned or deferred gifts are recognized through The Madeline Society (page 74). * A tax consultant is your best advisor in designing a giving plan for the benefit of Westridge. However, to explore the various ways to make contributions, contact Rebecca H. Potter at 626.799.1053, ext. 261.
