Westridge strives to develop young women whose joy in learning, personal ideals, commitment to ethical action, social and environmental responsibility, courage and compassion will lead them to meaningful lives as contributing citizens of the larger world. Approved by the Board of Trustees April 8, 2003; Revised August 2006

A Message From

THE Chair Dear Members of the Westridge Community, My family and I celebrated the graduation of our daughter Sophie ’13 from Westridge in June. As Board Chair, I have had many proud moments, but none as proud as the privilege of awarding Sophie and her classmates with their Westridge diplomas. For nine years my wife Debbie and I have watched Sophie blossom into an informed, articulate, engaged young woman, compassionate and driven, her bright mind challenged and opened to new ideas. Watching Sophie on the stage on Commencement day surrounded by friends she will hold for a lifetime, I felt as many parents do: our Westridge girls are ready to take on the world.

In 2012-2013, on the cusp of our Centennial, we continued work on our strategic planning process led by Head of School Elizabeth J. McGregor. The plan will bring renewed focus to critical areas: longevity through financial sustainability, outreach and growth through marketing, and academic strength that prepares girls to thrive and grow in a dynamic, ever-changing world. After a multilayered process that has engaged Westridge community members at every level, our strategic plan will be unveiled in the 2014-2015 school year. This robust roadmap will guide our entry into Westridge’s second century. Preparation for our Centennial marked the 2012-2013 school year under the leadership of Centennial Chair Fran Norris Scoble, former head of school, and the hard-working, imaginative, creative and inspiring Centennial volunteers and committee members. The Centennial theme, “Our Chosen Path: Founding Values for a New Century,” is rooted in founder Mary Lowther Ranney’s vision for the school, and has set the framework for the events, speakers, reunions, and celebrations of the 2013-2014 year. The Centennial year is designed for you, our Westridge community. Be sure to join us for the celebratory calendar of events, culminating in the Festival of the Arts, Reunion Day, and Westridge 100: The Celebration of the Century on March 20-22, 2014.

For a century-old independent school, our financial sustainability is a source of strength, pride – and attention. My wife Debbie and I wanted to mark the eve of our Centennial by inspiring the community to surpass all previous annual fund goals – and to break the $1,000,000 Annual Fund milestone. And surpass, we did. Thanks to the enormous response from our community – alumnae, parents, trustees, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends, – the Wagener Family Annual Fund Match was a resounding success, raising over $500,000 in new and increased gifts to the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 annual funds. Debbie and I were pleased to match this amount by making a $500,000 gift to the Westridge endowment. Thanks to you, we exceeded our Annual Fund goal of $1,000,000 by $80,000. This support was not possible without 100 percent participation by trustees, faculty and staff, and by 90 percent parent participation. Alumnae giving to the Annual Fund surpassed the previous year’s amount by nearly $30,000. We thank you, and we look forward to your ongoing support of this critical component to providing a Westridge education. I have been privileged to serve Westridge as its Board Chair in its 98th and 99th years, and honored to lead a diversely talented board that is deeply committed to the school’s mission, values, and traditions. Now we are ready to celebrate -- join me to mark the legacy, excellence, and promise of Westridge during our Centennial. See you there! Surgere!

A Message From

A

THE HEAD OF SCHOOL “As Westridge changes girls, so do girls change Westridge.”

This sentiment rings true year after year. While the foundation and purpose of Westridge has remained constant for a century, the human element makes each year unique. This was certainly true during the 2012-2013 school year, when not only students, but also faculty and staff, parents, trustees, and alumnae, were encouraged to “imagine, create and inspire.” Programs were introduced and refined, strategic initiatives explored, outreach expanded, and philanthropic efforts attained new heights.

Indicative of a 21st century education, collaborative programs at Westridge have enhanced the landscape of teaching and learning. As a result of many hours of planning, practice, and rehearsal, two joint performing arts endeavors graced the main stage of the Fran Norris Scoble Performing Arts Center at different events: the Upper School Chamber Orchestra accompanied the Glee Club, and the Advanced Dance Class performed a number choreographed to a piece performed by the Chamber Orchestra. As demonstrations of intricate coordination, these performances illustrate faculty innovation and ingenuity and showcase the talent, discipline, and preparedness of our students on stage.

The English department’s 1st Annual Voices in Literature and Culture conference explored the role of fairy tales and myths in our lives. “Leaving Breadcrumbs: Re-envisioning Make Believe – Gender and Culture in Fairy Tales and Myth” was a cross-divisional, interdisciplinary project with Lower, Middle, and Upper School student presentations of critical essays, creative writing pieces, power point presentations, poster boards, paintings, photographic and video projects expressing their views on the topic. In addition to being the first Westridge academic conference to cross divisions, it also featured alumna Judith Fuss Adell ’60, author of “A Guide to Non-Sexist Children’s Books” as the keynote speaker.

04

A long-standing tradition, the Westridge Pet Show was first held in 1917 as a fundraiser, earning $50 that was donated to the Red Cross. Later, the event evolved into the Lower School Pet Show and simply became an annual year-end diversion for the youngest Westridge girls. In spring 2013, under the leadership of the Lower School Student Activities and Leadership Council, it officially transitioned to “Petridge School for Animals.” The new iteration of the tradition maintains the pet visitation day and has reintroduced the fundraising component with philanthropic education to introduce Lower School students to event planning and budgeting, as well as charity research and coordination. The inaugural event raised over $1,800, benefitting the Pasadena Humane Society and the Kora Project in Africa. Athletics at Westridge continued to preserve a phenomenal tennis legacy. Varsity tennis defended its Prep League Championship title from 2011-2012 with a back-to-back league win. Junior Varsity tennis, in preparing to secure that legacy, again earned an undefeated season of Prep League play for the fourth consecutive year! And since no two classes are the same, the Class of 2013 made their own mark on Westridge’s college acceptance list. The 67 members of the Class of 2013 earned 319 acceptances to 144 different colleges and universities in 31 states, the District of Columbia, and Canada, with 891 submissions to 178 colleges. One hundred percent of the Class of 2013 was admitted to four-year colleges and universities. They are attending 51 different colleges in 24 states, the District of Columbia, and Canada.

“Donors rose to the occasion, allowing Westridge to experience another first by surpassing one million dollars in giving to the Annual Fund!”

Centennial planning in 2012-2013 moved forward enthusiastically, and under the leadership of retired head of school Fran Norris Scoble, the organization of Centennial Coordinator Ava Megna (past parent and former trustee), and the dedication of hundreds of volunteers crossing all constituencies, the 100th year celebrations began to take shape. Community events, such as the Founder’s Day Picnic, the Centennial Speaker Series, and the Athletic Hall of Fame introduced at Homecoming 2014, were thought through in great detail and have subsequently taken place with great success. In turn, these events have created much anticipation for the upcoming Centennial Weekend in March 2014! While planning for Centennial festivities was underway, so, too, were discussions about the vision for the school’s next century. The school’s strategic plan, in its second year of refinement, is focused on academic enhancement and 21st century education; marketing and community outreach; and financial sustainability. As the key to moving Westridge forward in the next few years, the strategic plan is in its final stages before its presentation to the community in the spring. Caring and capable faculty and staff who inspire their students and create a learning environment that fosters imagination and creativity have always been central to the experience of Westridge students. Following an employee’s nomination of the school as a top workplace in Metro Los Angeles, a survey on organizational health and employee engagement was conducted by a leading research firm. It was an honor when the school was selected in spring 2013 by the LA News Group (Metro LA) as one of the 25 Top Workplaces, determined solely on employee feedback. It confirmed what many at the school had known for some time! Westridge also continued its effort to reconnect alumnae with the school and one another. In addition to regional events held in Boston, Washington D.C., New York City, and London, the school extended an invitation to alumnae in the Boston area to attend a conference held by the National Coalition of Girls Schools with the purpose of creating a network of women with a shared foundation in single-sex education. This pilot event, attended by three Westridge alumnae, was a great

Westridge School

success! We look forward to creating other opportunities around the country to help Westridge alumnae establish additional meaningful relationships in their communities. Philanthropic support of Westridge through the Annual Fund remained critically important to guaranteeing a robust academic program, to providing access to a Westridge education for at least a third of our students, and to ensure modest tuition increases. To this end, a new leadership role in the parent community was created in 2012-2013 with the addition of class captains to each grade level. Armed with an in-depth understanding of the Annual Fund, its role in the day-to-day functions of the curriculum, and the ways in which it benefits current students, class captains aspired to increase parent participation and inspire philanthropic giving to the Annual Fund while educating their peers about how these contributions benefit the girls and the school. In addition, philanthropic support of Westridge attained a new level of success due to the generosity and foresight of a challenge match put forth by the Wagener family. Donors rose to the occasion, allowing Westridge to experience another first by surpassing one million dollars in giving to the Annual Fund! Not only did the community meet the Wagener Family Annual Fund Match with new and increased gifts in 2012-2013, but pledges were made to maintain these new and increased gifts in 2013-2014, totaling over $500,000. We are grateful to our donors for rising to the challenge, and to the Wagener family for helping secure Westridge’s future by committing the matched $500,000 to our Endowment.

Caring and capable faculty and staff who inspire their students and create a learning environment that fosters imagination and creativity have always been central to the experience of Westridge students.

Imagine what one can create when inspiration abounds. We are fortunate that the answer surrounds us daily, right here at Westridge School. With sincere gratitude,

Elizabeth J. McGregor Head of School

Annual Report on Philanthropy 2012-13

PARENTS of Alumnae

Parents of Alumnae have remained strong supporters of Westridge, from those whose daughter may have attended only a few years, to those whose daughter(s) graduated in 2013. Parenthesis indicates the daughters graduation year – some of our Parents of Alumnae have as many as 4 Westridge alumnae; as well some Current Parents who already have a Westridge grad. We are grateful to all Parents of Alumnae who continue to contribute to Westridge.

Named

endowment funds Westridge benefits greatly each year from named endowment funds. An educational partnership

Skills Enrichment Program

Founded in 1990, the Skills Enrichment Program (SEP) is a partnership between the Pasadena Unified School District and four local independent schools (Polytechnic, Mayfield Junior, Chandler and Westridge). Each summer, SEP provides an intensive five-week enrichment program to approximately 400 public-school students who are chosen by their school principals based on their academic promise and financial need. Once students are nominated in their fourth grade year, they remain in the program for eight consecutive summers. This long-term commitment between SEP and its students is essential to the program’s success. During their time in SEP, students build their skills in math, science, and language arts. Virtually all graduates of SEP go on to attend college, most at four-year universities. Westridge School hosts an all-girl experience for students in grades five and six. During their two summers at Westridge, students take a variety of academic classes to boost their math and verbal skills, with an eye on preparing for success in middle school. Classes are small (averaging 20 students) and teachers are joined in the classroom by high school and college-age interns, half of whom are themselves graduates of SEP. In addition to the academic enrichment courses, SEP students at Westridge have the opportunity to take classes in art, music, multimedia creation, and technology. Field trips provide adventures in the community, and our annual Etiquette Tea gives the girls a chance to dress up and attend a special event with a featured speaker. Daily physical education classes and Friday swim days balance the summer days with exercise. For more information, contact Danae Howe, Site Director at 626.799.1053 ext. 239 or dhowe@westridge.org.

64

In order to provide this program at no cost to the students, funds are raised from individuals, corporations and foundations. Contributions are made by the four member schools. With the generous support of those listed, this valuable and successful program continues to benefit hundreds of students each year.

Ways of making

A GIFT

All gifts are vital to the support of Westridge School’s annual and ongoing needs. The school thanks donors for their support of Westridge and their investment in our mission to provide the highest quality education to young women. Federal tax laws make giving additionally beneficial. CASH

CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITIES*

Current cash gifts are deductible for income tax purposes to the full extent allowed by law, and may be made with cash, checks, or credit card. Pledge payments may be arranged.

Through the California Community Foundation, Westridge is able to offer charitable gift annuities — a very attractive planned gift. In exchange for a gift of cash or stock, you will be paid a guaranteed lifetime income. You also receive an immediate charitable tax deduction and a portion of each income payment is considered to be a tax-free return of principal.

APPRECIATED SECURITIES If you own stocks or other capital assets that have appreciated in value, a gift of those securities to Westridge can result in significant tax savings. You may be able to obtain a tax deduction for the full value of the gift and avoid paying the tax on the gain you would have if you were to sell the asset.

INDIVIDUAL RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS Name Westridge as a beneficiary of your retirement plan and leave less-taxed assets to family.

MEMORIAL OR HONORARY GIFTS

OTHER PLANNED GIFTS*

Gifts may be given in honor or memory of a friend or a family member or in recognition of a significant event.

Westridge also accepts planned or deferred gifts through bequests, charitable trusts, life insurance, or pension plans. A donor may wish to consider these gift vehicles as a way to reduce or avoid estate and inheritance taxes. Planned or deferred gifts are recognized through The Madeline Society (page 62).

UNITED WAY Westridge may be designated as the recipient of your United Way contribution. Simply list the school’s name and address on your United Way pledge form. Processing charges may be imposed by United Way.

DONATE YOUR CAR Westridge accepts donation proceeds from many organizations that will purchase your vehicle. A donor may wish to sell their car to these organizations with the proceeds of the sale going to Westridge.

66

*A tax consultant is your best advisor in designing a giving plan for the benefit of Westridge. However, to explore the various ways to make contributions, contact the Advancement Office at 626.799.1053, ext. 261.
