The Westside Foundation provides student scholarships, classroom grants, facilities improvements, and support for Westside Community Schools when tax dollars are not available. Supporters and donors include alumni, district residents, businesses, teachers, staff, parents and friends—most from within district boundaries and the metropolitan area but many from across the state, and around the nation, too. They all share a common belief that a strong public education is essential to the quality of life and the future well-being of our community.

In addition to all the great things highlighted in this Annual Report, the Westside Foundation also supported the following initiatives in 2018 benefiting Westside Community Schools:

$70,000

was invested this year which helped the district in being granted a Personalized Learning Innovation grant from Nebraska’s Innovation Grant Program, totaling $483,000 per year for two years.

$18,300

was contributed by the district’s vendors and suppliers through the Business Partners Program benefiting specific initiatives and district outreach events.

$40,000

was donated to fund Outdoor Education for our sixth grade students.

The Little Theater Gets Facelift in Both Technology and Design Why the Renovation? Every alumnus has some memory of The Little Theater. If it was a class, a theatrical play, watching game film, or just hanging out during study hall, each and every Westside student has experienced this “theater” style classroom. After 60+ years, The Little Theater was in drastic need of a renovation to better the student and teaching experiences. The Westside Foundation worked with the high school to determine a vision of the new Little Theater… new furniture, flooring, Cisco technology, color scheme and branding. Everyone involved knew that this renovation could make a major impact in how students learn and how teachers teach. The Foundation raised the necessary funds from the donors listed at the top right of this page to make this dream a reality! If any alumni are visiting the high school, feel free to check out the new space!

Why the New Name, The C.L. Retelsdorf Little Theater?

Thank you to the following donors who made the C.L. Retelsdorf Little Theater renovation possible: • Class of 1957

• W Club Members

• Estate of David Davis (‘65)

• VI-VI Supporters

“In gratitude for the preparation for life that their Westside High School teachers gave them more than sixty years ago, the Class of 1957 has left a gift that will enhance the teaching and learning of Westside students for years to come. In addition to supporting the renovation of The Little Theater as an attractive and productive space, these classmates wanted to honor C.L. Retelsdorf, their inspirational drama and debate teacher who enabled them to communicate and connect better with people throughout their lives.” — Class of 1957

2018

It’s important for the Westside Alumni Association and the Westside Foundation to honor our school’s past. What a great opportunity to dedicate the renovated Little Theater space to an individual who made such an impact on so many students’ lives. The Class of 1957 approached the Westside Foundation about donating funds to this project to honor one teacher who made a profound impact on their lives: Clelland Lee Retelsdorf. C.L was a dedicated master teacher at Westside specializing in English, speech, dramatics and debate. He was also an effective administrator and leader for District 66, first as a Business Manager and later as the Superintendent. His Westside High School students during the 1950s continue to remember him fondly and with gratitude for the enormous positive impact that he had on their life paths and their abilities to succeed.

Did You Know? The C.L. Retelsdorf Little Theater is known today as a premier classroom space which rivals local universities in both technology and design!

Speakers Dr. Jordan Tappero, Pamela (Rowe) Smith, Nancy Keegan, Colonel Michele (Zipay) Olsen & Brian Halla.

The C.L. Retelsdorf Little Theater hosted the first Warrior Alumni Symposium event in November. Some of the alumni inducted into the 2018 Hall of Fame participated in this standing room only event. The alumni (pictured at left) spoke to current students about their careers, their time at the high school, and how Westside prepared them for post high school education and careers.

2018 Projects and Programs Private Instruction Lesson Fund Announced at the High School There is such great pride in Westside High School’s Performing Arts and Music Departments. The district continues to invest in the performing arts and music areas by providing numerous performance ensembles, opportunities to travel for performances and by establishing a committee to determine the best music practices in the US. Among the needs that rose to the top for the committee was the need for more private instruction. To this end we are proud to announce the creation of the Westside Performing Arts Private Instruction Lesson Program. Thanks to the generosity of donors who committed a total of $143,000 over the next three years, you will see tremendous growth in the already strong musical ensembles at Westside. Providing these students with private lessons will have a profound effect on the students particularly those who are unable to take private lessons outside of school, whether the struggles be financial, time, or other, with an emphasis on students in poverty. We are partnering with the Omaha Conservatory of Music to provide private instructors who bring expertise in a variety of performing arts areas.

Construction Starts on Engineering Department Expansion Over one million dollars has been committed by alumni, community foundations and industry leaders to expand the welding, fabrication and manufacturing labs at the high school. The department’s goals have always been to provide strategic partnerships with businesses to better align our students, teachers and curriculum with Omaha’s workforce development initiatives. The project will provide enhanced instructional space that is vital to the education students need in order to enhance their exposure to high-demand career fields. We are excited to create this unique, community-wide project that brings public-private partnerships together to enhance the Omaha community and increase our student’s success in their career goals. With construction in full swing, the anticipated completion date will be in time for the upcoming school year, with a dedication event with all the project’s supporters soon following. A project donor said, “My hope is that the Omaha business community can hold Westside up as a model school example for what others should be doing for workforce development.”

New ACT Prep Program at Westside 45 randomly selected juniors at Westside High received complimentary ACT test preparation due to a generous donor who supports academic excellence. This newly created ACT Prep program was implemented by a local Omaha company specializing in preparing kids for the ACT. With the high school’s unique modular scheduling, this program worked extremely well because the prep class didn’t interfere with the student’s daily classes or extracurricular activities. The program consisted of three separate classes, including general and verbal strategies, math strategies, and science reasoning/ test anxiety strategies. The students gave rave reviews of the class and the goal is to offer this program annually prior to the April ACT testing date.

If interested in supporting or learning about any of the above projects and programs, please use the enclosed envelope or contact us at 402-390-2133 or westside.foundation@westside66.net

Classroom & Innovation Grants During 2018, the Westside Foundation gave $20,000 in grants to support educational programs in District 66. These grants encompass a wide collection of enhanced learning experiences, which encourage a well-balanced lifestyle for students. The Foundation supports these and other projects throughout Westside Community Schools that would otherwise not be financed by the General Fund Budget.

EL Zoo Field Trip Loveland English Learner (EL) teacher Susie Sloup wanted a language experience for her students. The Westside Foundation made this possible by covering the cost to send kindergartenfifth grade EL students to the Henry Doorly Zoo and the Durham Museum. Sloup wrote in her grant request, “Language development is more meaningful and deeper when in a rich learning environment. This field trip would allow for students to connect with their community, gain more insight to cultural aspects in their community and promote an experience that would transfer into the classroom as a special memory.” Students in kindergarten through second grade visited various exhibits at the zoo. At the Durham, the third through fifth grade students learned how Omaha thrived from the railroad system and about Omaha’s immigration history. Students walked away with experiences they may not have gotten without the funding from the Westside Foundation. Hillary Haddix, EL Program Coordinator stated, “As a team and program, we would like to thank the Foundation for their generous donation.”

STEM Kits for Kindergarten Students Young children are naturally curious about the world and love to learn through play. Activities that involve experimentation, discovery, and building are great ways to reach our younger students. It is with this concept in mind that a grant request from Dede Marshall, kindergarten teacher at Swanson was fulfilled. The grant allowed for the purchase of 3D building blocks, construction pieces, straw constructors, engineering and design sets and other materials conducive to stimulating creativity and engineering, and developing problem solving skills. Marshall sees the children building and questioning as they play and create with the materials, as well as incorporating science concepts learned in kindergarten.

Crystal Forge Glass Blowing Class A selected group of AP-3D students are piloting a group independent study program that meets once a week after school at the Hot Shop’s Crystal Forge. This is the first course of its kind in the metro, and the first of its kind at the Crystal Forge. The program is designed very much as a college course would be, and gives the students an experience unlike anything they have done before. The hope is to open up students to the idea that a career in the fine arts is a possibility, and that with the proper training can become a reality. The course will also be a model for the educational programming at the Kaneko. The entire glass blowing course was made possible through the generosity of the Westside Foundation.

Sphero Bolt Grant April Bridwell, sixth grade teacher at Prairie Lane obtained a grant from the Foundation to purchase Sphero robots. These coding robots will help her students to advance and enrich their skills in computer science as well as to enhance their math skills. The app-enabled robots also foster creativity through discovery while boosting concepts like trial and error, developing hypothesis and engaging in dialogue as they problem solve to find a solution. In the future, Bridwell’s students will share their technology and coding knowledge with younger schoolmates.

Paint Pouring Select students at Westside Middle School were given the opportunity to explore a new method of abstract painting called paint pouring during one of the Genius Hour offerings. Color combinations, chemicals and an endless supply of different utensils that became art tools allowed students to really dig in and try creations they would not normally have the time, space or access to explore. A grant from the Foundation allowed for the purchase of many of the supplies to complete their projects. As an added bonus to the session, former student Phil Hawkins, a successful artist living in Los Angeles and an expert in paint pouring, face-timed with the students to provide insight and guidance on how to pursue their passions. Students were able to tap into a porthole of creativity that some didn’t know they had!

Genius Hour This year the Westside Middle School is having Genius Hour, which is a movement allowing students to explore their own passions and creativity during a set period of time in the classroom. The students will create passion projects. Passion projects are an opportunity to let students develop their own personalized learning styles, offering them the chance to take ownership of their learning and work within a time line to create a product or service relating to a topic they are truly passionate about. The funds provided by the Westside Foundation grant helped with a variety of supplies and materials needed for these projects. Some passion projects include baking videos, creating films, developing a unified sporting event, sewing projects and building different objects. The event culminated with the students sharing their passion projects with the community displaying their creativity, learning and hard work.

Westside Community Schools, Inc. 909 S. 76th Street, Omaha, NE 68114

Supporting excellence for our students and our community.
