Conquering those tricky “r” and stubborn “s” sounds! Technology and teaching combine to make a powerful impact in speech and language development. Thank you to our generous donors, Drs. Mavis Fletcher and Matt White, for funding the purchase of laptops and articulation applications to serve as a tool in the teaching process. With vibrant pictures and sounds on a “cool” device, the app engages students through personalized learning of targeted words, with an option to record and playback to help improve selfmonitoring skills. One simple click and students have something new to play and learn, all while reinforcing the instruction from the classroom teacher and speech-language pathologist. Teachers have observed rapid improvements and generalization of skills, which has everyone saying s-u-c-c-e-s-s.

Early Childhood Education
Toddlers = 45 Preschool = 311
The Westside Foundation supports the Westside Early Childhood Program that provides a safe, engaging educational environment for children ages 18 months through sixth grade. The program offers developmentally appropriate opportunities for children to grow and develop socially, emotionally, intellectually and physically with the support and guidance of competent and compassionate adults.
Early Childhood Close-up!
Enrollment
Starting in June, the Westside Early Childhood Centers held a strategic planning session. Site Directors, Elementary Principals, District Administration and Foundation Board Members attended. Together we created a three-year plan to direct our efforts to continue to provide highquality care and education to children in our programs. The following are three foundation statements guiding our strategic plan:
Four-Year-Old Program = 38 School-Age = 731
Part Time Employees = 61
1) Optimizing internal and external resources in our workforce, programs and facilities. 2) Strengthening partnerships and supporting community and family engagement. 3) Creating and implementing a sustainable technology plan. Under these three statements are nine strategic directions or goals we will be working towards in the next three years. We have already started working towards these goals and are very excited about the direction of WECC the next three years. We are in the second year of our Pyramid Project with the Nebraska Department of Education. The Leadership Team has decided to put efforts towards increasing our family involvement. One step was to implement the “PBIS Family Challenge. This gives families the opportunity to practice important social and emotional skills at home and be recognized at school for their efforts. Participation is continuing to grow and families appreciate the extra practice of these skills. We have also named two internal coaches that will be part of our efforts to sustain the Pyramid Project. Lastly, September was a big month. We completed a long-term goal of having all eight of our Early Childhood Centers accredited by NAEYC. Underwood Hills and Westgate received their notice of being accredited and celebrated their hard work. This is a great accomplishment and we are very proud of the work we do each day to uphold this high mark of quality! In the Omaha metro area there are only 21 centers accredited and 8 of those centers are Westside Early Childhood Centers!

Grants During 2016, the Westside Foundation gave $28,000 in grants to support educational programs in District 66. These grants encompass a wide collection of enhanced learning experiences, which encourage a well-balanced lifestyle for students. The Foundation supports these, and other projects throughout Westside Community Schools that would otherwise not be financed by the General Fund Budget.
Dancing Classrooms Dancing Classrooms is a program at Rockbrook Elementary School through Arts in Motion, which promotes respect, collaboration, and positive self-esteem through ballroom dance. The Westside Foundation provided a grant that helps to pay for the dance classes. This impacts all 5th grade students who participate in the program, and also brings back former participants in the 6th grade to help, and invites 4th graders to view the final performance. The curriculum focuses on persuasive writing; students may choose to write a piece either to the upcoming 4th grade to help them prepare for their adventure to come, or to the Community Club to thank them for their support. All together this program inspires a little more than a quarter of the school population and helps to build more respectful relationships.
Westside Clothing Closet The Westside Community Schools Clothing Closet serves district families by providing them with gently used clothing free of charge. The committee consists of volunteers who collect, organize and maintain the closet. Pictured left, Chairman Amy Brown, Andi Fisher and Brooke Dowse show off the closet to members of the Westside Foundation. The Foundation helped the team by providing funds for clothing racks and hangers to transform the space into an inviting zone for families. Students in need are identified by school social workers, counselors and staff, and all student identities are private. The main goal is to help kids feel good about themselves, and to feel that not only are their needs met, but also that they are being treated to a positive experience as well.
Choice Art Inspired by the concept of choice art, several art teachers approached the Westside Foundation for a grant that would set up several studios in art classrooms across the district. The supplies provided by the grant helped to establish studios in drawing, collage, painting, sculpture, architecture, fiber arts, digital media and printmaking. Art teacher Jennifer Jurgensen described the revitalized teaching method as a way for students to learn more about the creative process and be able to resourcefully come up with their own unique ideas and solutions to problems. Choice based studios allow students to become true “artists and have authentic, individual learning experiences in the art room.
CPR Training Twenty-one states require their high school students to take CPR as a requirement for graduation. Legislation has not yet passed in Nebraska, but it is expected within the next five years. Due to the life saving advantages of having CPR skills, Westside High School has taken charge by now providing CPR training to all freshmen through the Healthy Living class. Recertification will be offered again in two years for those students. A grant from the Westside Foundation provided equipment and curriculum purchases, and covered the certification costs for the 2016-2017 school year.

VI-VI Show and Tell During 2015, the Westside Foundation raised $175,000 from the VI-VI: Oh, the Places We’ll Go! fundraiser. In 2016 those funds continued to be allocated toward innovative educational opportunities in every school. We are proud to “show and tell” a few highlights:
Project Eclipse
Therman Statom – Artist in Residence
The Westside Foundation provided funds to Project Eclipse — a proposal to equip every student and staff member in District 66 with eye protection to safely view the solar eclipse on August 21st, 2017. The eclipse will be 98.58% full in the Omaha area, and will be quite amazing to witness. Funds will also support teachers with lesson plans and activities to teach students all about the incredible sight they will see. Pictured above, Angela Bergman and District 66 students pose with the special eye protection that will be given out for the event. Project Eclipse will have a massive impact across the district with every teacher and student involved; expect a district-wide event celebrating this once in a lifetime learning opportunity.
The Westside High School art program has partnered with Therman Statom and Kaneko for the Artist in Residence program, provided by funds through the Westside Foundation. Therman Statom is an artist who specializes in glass art and sculpting, and his work is featured at major American and International museums. Kaneko is an Omaha-based art and culture organization that invests in creativity and its impact on society. Together these artistic forces have been inspiring students to use their creativity in all aspects of their lives, and also to impact the Westside community. A hallmark concept of the project is to let art live and breath at Westside. Therman Statom and Westside art students are working to reimagine columns into works of art in the Westside Courtyard cafeteria. The idea is for student art not to be kept in a vacuum, but to reinvigorate the Westside Community.
Paddock Road Tinker Lab
Hydroponic Garden
An Innovation Grant was provided to Paddock Road Elementary School by the Westside Foundation to create a mini “Do Space” in the library. Among the key features of the Tinker Lab are workspaces that inspire personal and collaborative learning, such as tables repurposed with whiteboard paint. Another feature is innovation kits that allow students to explore their passions by checking out kits on robotics, circuit building, architecture, knitting & sewing, arts & crafts, reverse engineering and more. The goal of the Tinker Lab is to provide all students with opportunities to grow through enrichment, collaboration and personalized learning spaces.
The Garden Club at Rockbrook Elementary School initiated a student-led experiment to bring a hydroponic garden to life. The Westside Foundation provided funds for the sustainable garden that was available for students who wanted to participate from kindergarten through sixth grade. A hydroponic garden is an alternative gardening method that grows plants without soil, through an efficient and sustainable use of water and nutrients. Rockbrook leadership and community partner Paradigm Gardens engaged students in research, experimentation, and implementation of this tangible, yet non-traditional method of gardening.

Supporting the District
In 2016, the Westside Foundation has contributed more than $100,000 to Westside Community Schools. These grants reach a large number of students in a variety of educational disciplines. A hallmark of these efforts is the ability to continue to fund Outdoor Education — a program that builds community, serves as a real-life connection to science and creates lifelong memories for every 6th grade student in every elementary school. In addition, the Westside Foundation has funded musical instruments for the esteemed band program, enhanced microscopes for the science program at Westside High School and granted funds for additional sewing machines for the Family and Consumer Science program at Westside Middle School.
