After nearly two years, Brockport’s Tower Clock chimes again An azure sky, bright sun, and a gentle breeze made a perfect afternoon for the re-dedication of the Tower Clock at the United Methodist Church in Brockport. The June 25 event in Sagawa Park celebrated the restoration and re-starting of the clock originally dedicated in 1914. The ceremony was organized by Village Historian Bill Andrews and hosted by the Brockport Village Board and Brockport Lions Club. People, from small children to senior citizens, were scattered around the shaded park and were captured in these photos by Dianne Hickerson.

Sons of the American Revolution also attended the event.

The clock was officially started at 4:55 p.m. and, at exactly 5 p.m., it’s chime rang for the first time in two years.

Mayor Margaret Blackman and Village Historian William Andrews participated in the event.

The MOMS Club of Brockport helped children make their own clocks.

A large crowd of over 150 people enjoyed the ceremonies at Sagawa Park.

Aimee Gonzalez spoke on behalf of the Lions Club, which organized the fund raiser to restore the clock.

This is what makes it tick. The clockworks were restored to their original condition, including the pin stripe paint detail, by Essence of Time Tower and Street Clock Experts in Lockport. Cables are connected to weights that power the clock and bell strike. Clockworks photos by Ron Sabernick.

Hawley announces $13.9 million in local transportation upgrades Funding will improve operating assistance, transit buses, facilities and services in Genesee, Orleans and Monroe counties Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C,IBatavia) announced recently that millions in transportation upgrades have been awarded to the 139th Assembly District which includes funds to replace three transit buses and one bus shelter in Genesee County, improve operating functionality in Monroe County and the purchase of a new bus facility in Orleans County. “Our local public transportation system is crucial to maintaining a strong and bustling community for all walks of life,” Hawley said. “With all the difficulties of

traffic, parking and expenses of commuting for oneself, public transportation is extremely important to many residents of Western New York. Thousands of people rely on our buses to travel to work, go shopping and travel around the district, and many school age and college students need reliable transportation to and from campus. I am pleased to announce that this funding will be injected into our local transportation system and look forward to a more seamless commute for our residents.” Provided information

Sweden & Clarkson launch new recreation survey The Towns of Sweden and Clarkson have launched a new recreation survey to gather residents’ feedback regarding the Sweden/ Clarkson Community Center’s recreation programming and facilities. The survey was designed by Sweden Councilperson Patricia Hayles and Clarkson Councilpersons Christa Filipowicz and Jackie Smith. It is the first recreation survey to be conducted by the towns in several years. The survey will be available July 9 through July 22 on monkey survey. The web address is: https://www.surveymonkey. com/r/swedenclarksonrec. The towns will be publishing the link on the Community Center and town websites and on the Community Center and town Facebook pages. In addition, emails will be sent to those enrolled in recreation programs. For those not comfortable filling out an on-line survey, paper surveys will be available at the Community Center, 4927 Lake Road; Sweden Town Hall, 18 State Street; and Clarkson Town Hall, 3710 Lake Road. The paper surveys are unique, in other words, they cannot be copied and submitted. Paper surveys have to be submitted on the original form. Residents who would

like to fill out a paper survey but cannot make it into one of the locations to pick one up, should call the Town of Sweden at 637-7588 and a paper survey will be mailed to the requester. Some of the questions are program related, such as: do current programs influence a healthy lifestyle? are program fees affordable? what activities and resources do you use? Other questions relate to the facility: are facilities clean and well-maintained? do you think upgrades are necessary? Some questions center around information: how do you hear about recreation programs? what social media platforms do you prefer to use? There are 20 questions in all and an area for responders to leave other comments about subjects that may not have been covered by a survey question. Once the data has been collected and analyzed, it will be used by the two towns and the Recreation Department to develop programming that fits current needs and to plan for facility repairs and improvements. Opinion & Comments Questioning Congressman’s vision for the 27th District What is Congressman Collins’ vision for the 27th congressional district? Congressman Collins voted to cut C.H.I.P. which helps provide healthcare, immunizations and other services to working families in the district. Congressman Collins has voted to cut S.N.A.P. Research shows that S.N.A.P. reduces poverty and food insecurity. Furthermore, it improves health and economic outcomes. Congressman Collins seems to oppose helping families in the district while giving out corporate welfare. What is Congressman Collins’ vision? The New York Times reported (6/25/18) “The dairy industry now faces substantial tariffs on products it exports as Mexico, Canada and other countries retaliate against Mr. Trump’s steel and aluminum tariffs.” Congressman Collins has expressed support for these tariffs. Furthermore, the crackdown on immigration from our southern border will cause a shortage of farm workers for local farms. Congressman Collins is showing a lack of vision and leadership. William Fine Brockport

Second Time Treasures It was a sort of “Graduation Day” celebration - a sad ending for a community organization that has contributed a major service to Hilton and nearby towns for over seven years. Second Time Treasures, sponsored by St. Leo’s Church on Lake Avenue, provided a store stocked with a large assortment of gently used clothing and household goods at reasonable prices. This well-organized collection of treasures, managed by Anna Summa, was open three days a week, year around. Housed in the original St. Leo’s Church, it was possible because of the devoted, reliable, enthusiastic work of around 30 community volunteers. Financial concerns of the church brought about the necessary closing of this thriving ministry. After final sales, the doors of Second Time Treasures were closed near the end of June. Like other graduations, it was a signal: time to move on to the next phase. One of the best customers, Kate Fleury, so appreciated this service to the less-than-affluent people in this area, that she gave a party for Anna and the volunteers on Sunday. A healthy delicious buffet was ready for about 20 members of this Second-Time-Treasures Club, served on some pretty dishes Kate had bought there. The volunteers had a chance to share some of their fond memories of the “treasures” that have passed through the doors of old St. Leo’s Church. First were the wonderful still-good and useful clothes, books, tools, ice skates, bathing suits, etc., neatly sorted and labeled. Treasured also were the customers who passed through those doors, very pleased to hunt for a needed tablecloth, or book, or prom dress or mixing bowl -- whatever they were looking for. Customers were delighted to further the recycling concept by purchasing good quality items from St. Leo’s shop to use again, and at fair prices. You might have heard occasional comments about the good value and the variety of “stuff” that was organized and merchandised so attractively, like, “Second Time Treasures was a darn good replacement for the former Ben Franklin store in Hilton,” or “At St. Leo’s you can find most anything you want in town without driving to Ridge Road.” Many volunteers and even more customers were saddened to lose this valuable shopping resource so near to home. And I am one of them. Many thanks to Anna Summa and her caring corps of volunteers for this gift to our community. You will be missed, Second Time Treasures!

Eleanor N. Humphrey, M.D. Eleanor N. Humphrey, M.D. died June 12, 2018 at age 102. Predeceased by her husband, Paul Humphrey. Survived by her three children, Dr. Paula Kim (John), Paul N. (Cathy), and Joel (Deborah); seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. An article written by Kristina Gabalski, printed in the Suburban News in March of 2016 for her 100th birthday shared some of her life stories: At age 100, Eleanor’s eyesight is not what it was, but she is able to continue to live in her historic home on Union Street (it was a stop on the Underground Railroad) with the help of Joel and his wife, Deborah, who live there with her. “I want to stay in my home,” Eleanor says, “the gardens are so nice.” Recently, Eleanor recounted main events in her rich and long life, which began in Rochester, where she was born and grew up. She attended grade school and high school in the city and then attended the Women’s College at the U of R. She knew she wanted a career as a doctor and was one of the first local women to be accepted into the U of R Medical School, where she studied with the likes of Arthur Kornberg, who won the Nobel Prize for his discovery of the mechanism in the biosynthesis of DNA. Eleanor remembers working for two summers on a job related to Kornberg’s research. “I stirred pig’s kidneys and strained them,” she says. She was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society at the U of R and married Paul Humphrey in 1941, during her last year of medical school. She traveled to Boston for an internship and residency work and remembers the first time she delivered a baby, an experience that left her a bit in awe. “I came out and the sun was up, I felt there is something else that is guiding us in our lives,” Eleanor says of the natural wonder of birth. Joel says his mother helped to open doors for women doctors in Rochester. “She was breaking-in when women weren’t really wanted,” he says. One fellow medical student - a young man - even told her to, “go home and learn to cook,” Eleanor remembers. She opened her first office in the Medical Arts Building in Rochester and practiced in obstetrics and gynecology from 1944 to 1975. She then worked as a gynecologist for Planned Parenthood until the age of 77, eight of those years as medical director. Eleanor had three children - two sons, Paul, a retired attorney, and Joel, who worked 42 years in healthcare; and her daughter, Paula, a physician. “I only missed nine months (total) away from my practice,” while she was having her family, Eleanor says, and with support of family, she did not have to put her children in daycare. She and her husband, Paul, enjoyed traveling the world. “We went twelve times over the Atlantic and twice over the Pacific,” she says, visiting such places as Japan, Thailand and Hong Kong. Eleanor and Paul took their three children on a “grand tour of Europe,” Eleanor recalls, which included Spain, Portugal and Morocco. Eleanor also enjoyed playing piano, making doll houses and doll dresses, and gardening, which brought her special joy. “I was a member of the Spencerport Garden Club for 60 years,” she says. Additionally, she was therapy chairman of district garden clubs for 13 years, working on projects like planting flowers and plants on the children’s play deck at Strong Memorial Hospital and also in garden therapy work with the disabled. She became a National Council Judge for flower exhibitions. After Eleanor’s husband died in 2001, Westside News Inc. sponsored a children’s garden outside the library wing of the Ogden Community Center in honor of Paul and Eleanor. Paul enjoyed his involvement in Suburban News and Hamlin-Clarkson Herald as a frequent contributor of feature articles and light verses. The quiet reading spot with benches is protected by a hedge of arborvitae and continues to be a peaceful spot for young families. Of making it to her 100th birthday, Eleanor very candidly says, “I would advise other people not to live to 100 … I can’t play the piano anymore, I can’t do my handiwork.” She notes she and her family always ate a proper diet and watched their weight and son, Joel, adds that his mother always kept active and never smoked or drank. “I would have a cocktail once in a while,” Eleanor admits, “and sometimes a glass of wine.” Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Donations can be made to the Ogden Baptist Church in her memory.

A Bang-up Fourth at GCV&M Nobody celebrates Independence Day like Genesee Country Village & Museum. Who else fires a 100-pound anvil into the sky, something occasionally done at celebrations in 1830s Western New York when there were no cannons to be had? Who else offers blocks of ice where visitors can help themselves in chipping off pieces for their lemonade? Few else offer the truly moving moment when some 50 new American citizens take their naturalization oath on the steps of the historic village Town Hall. And who else, in authentic 19th-century fashion, offers a spirited reading of the

Declaration of Independence that sets the tone for the afternoon’s festivities? All this plus parade, picnics, patriotic concerts by the Geneseo Cornet Band, ladies base ball and dozens of other family-friendly activities amidst much pomp, music and merriment that traditionally was part of Independence Day. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 4. Swearing-in ceremony is at 11 a.m., concert at 12:30 p.m. and parade at 1:30 p.m. For more information, visit the museum website www.gcv.org or call 294-8218. Provided information

Westside Challenger programs receive support from Elks Lodge The Westside Challenger Baseball program and the Westside Challenger Tennis program would like to express their sincere appreciation to the Elks Club (B.P.O.E. Lodge #2110) of Monroe County who, over the past two years, have been tremendously supportive of our sports programs for athletes with identifiable disabilities. These programs are designed to ensure that our athletes receive excellent instruction that is tailored to their individual skill levels provided in a positive and individualized environment. The Elks Club (B.P.O.E. Lodge #2110) has been instrumental in allowing us to work effectively with our athletes. Specifically, within the past year, they have written and received funding for a substantial monetary grant and hosted a banquet for our athletes, their parents and friends. This banquet – hosted ably by the Elks and Elkettes on November 4, 2017 - not only raised a significant amount of money for our programs but provided a wonderful experience for all. A fine meal and many exciting sporting activities were provided during the two hour banquet.

Recently the organizers of Westside Challenger Baseball and Westside Challenger Tennis, Jack Milner, John DeBaun and Doug Collier, were invited to a lodge meeting at which time they presented a plaque in appreciation of the significant support provided by the Elks Club. Although everyone in the club has been involved and supportive, significant planning time was provided by Glendale Terry, Nick Filonovich, Courtney Pollet, and Steve West. That the United States Tennis Association awarded Westside Challenger Tennis with the ‘2017 U.S.T.A Eastern Service to People with Disabilities’ award is in no small way a result of the support the program received from the Elks Club (B.P.O.E. Lodge #2110). Westside Challenger Baseball and Westside Challenger Tennis look forward to continuing this important partnership. Submitted by Westside Challenger Programs

Brockport Rotary welcomes members of Brockport Police Department The Brockport Rotary Club welcomed members of the Brockport Police Department to address the group at a recent meeting. New Chief Mark Cuzzupoli introduced himself by relating that he is a Brockport educated person with 23 years with the Department, rising through the ranks to his present position. He noted the department is dedicated to community policing and the two officers he introduced are major cogs in that policy. He spoke of both officers as being very special. In his five years with the department, Officer Josh Sime has earned his special assignment as K-9 Brock’s handler. Both were a big hit with the group as shown by those who wanted to be in the photo with the officers. Brock is a Czech Republic bred German Shepard who was obtained from a facility in Pennsylvania as a young dog (he is 2 years + and has been in service for about a

His powers of concentration and obedience level were displayed to the attendees as was his terrific personality. Sime’s police car has special modifications for Brock including a car rear rest area including fan and more. With a remote, Sime can pop the rear door and Brock knows he is supposed to do his job protecting his handler and getting the bad guy. He will reside with Sime when he retires to civilian status. Byron-Bergen Elementary School fourth-graders put on a show On June 19, the Byron-Bergen learning community and the community at-large were treated to a special stage adaptation of “Sneaky Weasel,” a children’s book by author Hannah Shaw, performed by fourthgraders. The show featured the talents of the entire class working together as actors, assistant directors, narrators, dancers, stage crew and scenery designers, sound effects artists, and costume designers. The story centered on an unhappy bully, Sneaky Weasel, who finally discovers how to be a friend. “Our students have been working on the project for several weeks,” said fourth-

grade teacher Alyson Tardy, who also with teachers Jenna Carney and Kelly Morriss, wrote the stage play and directed the performance. “They have each contributed their best efforts. It’s been really great seeing students find talents they didn’t know they had, kids stepping up to help each other, and quiet children coming out of their shells to get onstage in front of an audience. The arts are so important for development and this has been a wonderful opportunity for our students to really stretch themselves and shine.” Provided information and photos

Above, the cast included narrators plus singing and dancing hedgehogs, rabbits, sheep, rats, mice, shrews, dogs, and even a chicken.

“Sneaky Weasel” featured players (l-r) Grace DiQuattro, Joel Lamb, Simone Scharvogel (as Sneaky), Megan Jarkeiwicz, and Katherine Rogoyski.

At right, Mama Weasel (Gianna Graff) with all her weasel-y offspring (Madisyn Rodak, Logan Czachorowski, Madison Hutchings, Sidney Maher, and Connor Copani).

Spencerport, Someplace Special!

Comments The Spencerport Volunteer Firemen’s Association thanks you Every year in early June, the Spencerport Volunteer Firemen’s carnival rolls into town. Along with the sights and sounds of the rides comes the smell of delicious carnival food and the cheers from the kids who have won a prize at a game. The crowd at the Grand Parade was one of the largest we can recall. Turning onto Main Street and seeing the many people clapping and cheering reminds us of what a great community we have sworn to protect! We beam with pride as the noise level increases when we pass. Thank you. Along with all of the fun parts of the carnival, we acknowledge some other things. Increased traffic, noise and parking issues are part of the big event. For your tolerance we say, thank you! Our annual carnival is one of our largest fundraisers. Your support allows us to maintain a 100 percent volunteer fire department and cover expenses not paid for through tax dollars. We could not be more thankful for your generosity and understanding. We had great weather this year, always appreciated. However, the strong, community participation makes our carnival so successful. The Spencerport Volunteer Firemen’s Association thanks you all for your help, support and kind understanding. Stephen P. Cusenz, Secretary Spencerport Volunteer Firemen’s Association

Getting to know the Emily L. Knapp Museum by Doug Hickerson About 90 harbor masters at Brockport’s Welcome Center greet visitors to Brockport throughout the summer. The Emily L. Knapp Museum is one of the historic points of interest for those who wish to tour the village. It’s on the second and third floors of the gray mansion at 40 State Street (lower floors are the Village Court). To give the harbor masters first-hand familiarity with the museum, they were all invited to an open house at the museum from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, June 24. Pizza, lemonade, and pop were served.

The open house was organized by Dan Burns, a museum volunteer, and Sue Savard, a volunteer who has led the restoration and expansion of the historic gem. They and Pat O’Brien, president of the museum board, were hosts for the event. “Most of the harbor masters don’t know about the museum, and others who know it have not been there since its restoration,” Savard said. “Once familiar with it, they are ones who can promote the museum to visitors.” Even with a lower than hoped-for turnout on a rainy afternoon, Savard called the event a success. “Those who were there loved the place and were very complimentary. And, they will tell other people,” she said.

Container gardens are very popular because they allow for growing flowers, herbs, vegetables and even fruits in small spaces. Container gardens do need regular maintenance, however, to keep them vigorous as the growing season progresses. The National Gardening Association says it is important to water pots frequently. Containers consist of closely spaced plants in a small volume of soil and you might need to water as much as once or even twice a day during hot, dry spells. Saturate the soil when you water. Containers which have more plants in them than the pot size can support tend to dry out very quickly. Prune back plants, remove some plants or move the container to a more shady location to help keep the soil moist. That said, it is possible to overwater containers. Plants can suffer from root rot, particularly if the growing mix you used does not drain well. Feel the soil before you water to make sure the soil is dry. Cornell Cooperative Extension says plants which are yellowing from the bottom, lack vigor or are poor in color, can be a sign of too much water. (This can also be a sign that you need a fertilizer with a higher nutrient level). Container gardens need to be fertilized regularly. Because of frequent watering and the limited amount of soil in containers, fertilizer is critical for success. A slow-release fertilizer in the form of pellets can be added to potting soil according to package directions. Cornell Extension says the recommended method of fertilizer application for containers is to use a water soluble fertilizer as the plants grow. Apply according to package directions. Over application of fertilizer can kill plants due to fertilizer burn. Cornell also says you can add some organic matter to your potting mix right at the start. This should be done in a potting mix to compost ratio of no more than 3 to 1. Keep your container plants looking lush by pruning out leggy stems and removing off-colored or damaged and diseased foliage. Remove spent blooms before plants go to seed and continually harvest vegetables in containers to encourage more production. Removing spent flower blooms can help plants bloom longer and more profusely.Remove flower spikes from coleus plants and herbs such as basil to create fuller, bushier plants. According to Cornell Extension, removing dead leaves and flowers from container plants also helps discourage insects and disease organisms. Container plants can be changed seasonally. As plants move past their prime, keep your container looking fresh with seasonal themes. Bulbs, primroses, and lettuce can be grown in the spring; annuals, vegetables and herbs in the summer, and pansies and kale add color and interest through the autumn. The National Gardening Association offers these additional tips for maintaining container gardens - lightcolored, non-porous containers such as plastic or glazed pottery can help retain water better and help reduce watering chores. Protecting pots from full sun and wind can also help retain soil moisture. Finally, rotating your containers encourages plants to grow evenly on all sides. Plants located on the shady side of a container can become leggy as they stretch for the sunlight.

handle the fireworks

FASNY strongly urges NYers not to use sparkling devices The Fourth of July is just around the corner and along with it comes the annual tradition of fireworks shows. The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) urges New Yorkers let professionals handle the fireworks, and not to use these kind of devices themselves. In 2014, New York State legalized the use of certain sparkling devices, defined as ground-based or handheld devices that produce a shower of colored sparks and or a colored flame, audible crackling or whistling noise and smoke. Counties have the option of banning the sale of these devices within their borders, but the vast majority of the State allows for them to be sold. Under the law, sparkling devices can be sold between June 1 and July 5 (as well as December 26 to January 1). The legalization of sparkling devices does not change the fact that they are extremely dangerous if used by those without proper training. Despite their toy-like appearances, sparklers can seriously harm their users. The tip of a sparkler burns at a temperature of nearly 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, which can cause severe 3rd degree burns. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), sparklers cause roughly 25 percent of all fireworksrelated emergency room visits, the most of any type of fireworks-like device. “Fireworks and sparkling devices are extremely dangerous in the hands of a non-professional,” said FASNY President Ken Pienkowski. “When misused, fireworks

and sparkling devices can cause serious bodily harm, and even death, to their users and to those around them. Fireworks should only be used by professionals who have undergone the proper training and certification in their operation. Rather than take this sort of risk, FASNY urges New Yorkers to attend one of the many excellent fireworks displays available across New York State.” In 2017, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that 68 percent of the total estimated fireworksrelated injuries in 2016 occurred in the month surrounding July 4th, with almost one-third of those injured being children under the age of 15. “FASNY wishes all a happy and safe Fourth of July. Should there be an emergency or unsafe situation, we urge everyone to call 911 for help. It’s better to be safe than sorry,” said President Pienkowski. Provided information

The Frog Prince hops on stage at RAPA This summer families can escape to the land of make-believe with RAPA Family Theatre’s The Frog Prince. The classic fairy tale will be performed July 14 through 29 on stage at the Kodak Center Studio Theatre. The Frog Prince is one of twelve theatrical productions being produced by RAPA for their 2018 Summer Stock. This twist on the classic fairy tale follows the story of the fair young Princess. Will she marry the pushy, yet eligible, Prince Frederick? With the help of her King and Queen, her silly ladies in waiting, and a whimsical (and often confused) Fairy Godmother, the Princess will deal with him. However, will the Princess also care for the large frog who assists her and retrieve a prized token, helping him to break the bewitched curse? Find out for yourself in this magical and timeless journey. The Frog Prince is directed by Jason Rugg, a drama teacher at West Irondequoit High School. The cast of professional adult actors, includes: Andrew Theede (Marcus, King of Meritoria), Trisha Zeller (Melissa, Queen of Meritoria), Jane Huffer (Princess Julietta), Kiefer Schenk (Frederick, Prince of Frenetica), Mandi Lynn Griffith-Gurell (Gossamer, Fairy Godmother), Eric William Schutt (Jonathan, Prince of Tranquilia), and Madison Kreuzer (Princess Lucinda/ Dorinda). “Grab the Good Stuff” campaign Summer is almost here, and that means lots of fresh produce is available at your local farmers market or curbside market. Vegetables and fruit are an important part of every family’s eating, and there’s so much to enjoy. But the reality is three in four Americans are not eating enough fruits and vegetables. Adding more vegetables and fruit to your day is easier than you think. This summer, Finger Lakes Eat Smart New York is running a campaign to provide you with ideas, recipes and tools to help your family enjoy fresh (as well as frozen or canned) produce – to make it easy to “grab the good stuff.” •Eat together. Let your child see you enjoying vegetables and fruit during meals and snacks. Keep mealtime upbeat and stress free. •Cook together. Teach your child to tear lettuce or add veggie toppings to pizza. Not sure how to prepare it? Farmers know delicious ways to use their products and are a great resource for food prep tips and recipes. Or you can search for healthy and affordable recipes on our website: grabthegoodstuff.org.

•Share the adventure. Try new vegetables and fruits together. Find fruit and veggies that aren’t usually in a grocery store, or at a farm stand or farmers market. Challenge yourself with a new ingredient. Go with friends or family to a “pick-your-own” farm or orchard. Get active while learning where your food comes from. •Take it with you. Show your child how whole fruit is a great snack to eat at the park or while doing errands. Put apples, oranges, or bananas in your bag for quick snacks. Look for the Grab the Good Stuff logo on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Pandora for more ideas, recipes and tools (including a farmers market and curbside market locator). Or simply visit grabthegoodstuff.org. Find a new way to prepare a vegetable you enjoy, and share your enthusiasm with everyone at the table. Provided information

Brockport Police issue phone scam warning Between June 17 and June 21, the Brockport Police handled 300 calls for service (10,841 to date) to include two annoyance calls, five harassment/fight/assault reports, three family trouble reports, 104 special attentions, and conducted 62 traffic stops. Note that the above calls do not represent all of the calls received by the Brockport Police. It should be noted that not all of the calls are found to be as dispatched once on scene. Community message Phone Scams: The Brockport Police, as well as other law enforcement agencies, have responded to several reports of phone scams. A phone scam is when a person calls you and tells you that they are a representative of a collecting agency and that you owe money. If someone calls you and says this and that the only way to pay it is through the purchase of gift cards or similar, you are being scammed. Agencies, like the IRS, will never contact you via phone to tell you that the only way to pay is through gift cards or similar. Many times, the person on the other end of the line will tell you that if you do not pay, a warrant will be issued for your arrest. If any of this happens to you, simply tell the person that you will contact the Brockport Police Department for verification. When you do receive this call, please call the Brockport Police immediately. Any questions/comments can be directed to Chief Mark T. Cuzzupoli by calling (585)637-1020 or by email ChiefCuzzupoli@brockportpolice.org Provided information

Time Capsule sealed inside GCC’s new Call Arena Last month, Genesee Community College officials marked the end of a multi-year 50th Anniversary celebration by sealing a special Time Capsule inside the stairwell at the south end of the new Richard C. Call Arena. The treasure trunk is filled to the brim with over 200 items of college memorabilia collected over the past 18 months to document, preserve and celebrate the college’s first 50 years. The time capsule is scheduled to be opened in May of 2068 as part of GCC’s 100th Anniversary Celebration. “Sealing up and stowing away our time capsule offers the perfect opportunity to draw our eighteen month 50th Anniversary celebration to a close,” Dr. James M. Sunser, president of GCC said. “It tied together our inspirational past and our dynamic pres-

ent, and all within a new facility offering immense promise for GCC’s future. If there is a better conclusion to the whirlwind of anniversary celebrations and activities this past year, I can’t think of it.” Within the collection are the following ten categories of items with several sample items highlighted: •Academics - A sample syllabus, math book, testing form, Career Services flyers and a New Courier student newspaper •Alumni - Six “Forum” newsletters, alumni buttons and the 1993 book, “Profiles in Success: Reflections of the Graduates of GCC” •Athletics - A photo album, baseball cap and several jerseys •Collectables - The musical score “Hymn to Genesee,” a mint proof set, and a set of 2017 coins •College Life - Several college catalogs, staff directories, FAFSA forms and a dining flyer •College Promotions - Folders, buttons, brochures, pamphlets, Report Cards to the Community and Fast Facts flyers •GCC Events Materials: From convocation to commencement, fashion shows to homecoming - more than 50 sample items represent the many events that have happened over the past 50 years at GCC •GCC “Swag:” - Lapel pin, travel mug, USB jump drive, insulated lunch box, “Nail Your Future” emery boards, luggage tags, a whistle with “GCC has all the Bells and Whistles” and a stress cow that promoted the college’s new Food Processing Technology program •History and Memorabilia - The original deed for the GCC site, and an array of intriguing items donated by alumna Mary

Yunker including newspaper clippings from 1970, Student Handbooks, a woman’s athletic uniform and a 1968 edition of Time Magazine •Illustrations from the Era - Various newspapers, articles and the Batavia brochure from 2018 •Miscellaneous - Banners, college map, bus schedule, cellular telephone, calculator, dry eraser marker, stationery samples, student activity card, a sample bottle of GCC’s Apple Cider Syrup, t-shirt and “Muses of the Hill” book of poetry A few historical highlights: GCC is one of the few colleges nationwide that was established as a result of a successful grassroots campaign that culminated in a successful 1966 public referendum supporting the creation of a community college.

Genesee Community College first opened its doors on September 28, 1967 with 21 faculty members and 378 full-time and 243 part-time students - which was five times more than anticipated. GCC’s first campus was on West Main in Batavia in a converted Valu Hardware Store. The college enrollment quickly outgrew this space and its permanent home opened in 1972 on College Road. In addition, alumnus Donald Conway, GCC Class of 1979, who worked on a major NASA project during his employment at Kodak, shared some of the collateral materials from the CHANDRA X-Ray telescope. Conway attended the Time Capsule ceremony and helped President Sunser stow the large trunk-size capsule. Provided information
