B-B Builders Club donates to Behavioral Health Treatment Center at Unity On May 23, Byron-Bergen Jr./Sr. High School Builders Club members presented a check for $500 to representatives from Rochester Regional Health’s Behavioral Health Treatment and Chemical Dependency Center at Unity Hospital. Led by Builders Club president, 10th-grader Jacey Donahue, the student delegation was welcomed to the Center by community relations managers Tiffany Carnevale, Valerie Donnelly and Brad Pearson from the RRH Gifts Foundation, along with Center Manager Jennifer Esten, supervisor Kristen Weber and Recreation Director David Catalino. The group was accompanied by Byron-Bergen teacher and faculty advisor Andrea Feeney and Byron Kiwanis Club sponsors Robert Wood and President Karen Jaczynski. Members of the Builders Club, who range in age from 7 to 15, have been working hard in their community this year, helping others and raising money through coin collection and raffles. After researching a number of local organizations, the group decided to donate their funds to the Chemical Dependency Center. After the ceremony, the group learned more about the operations at the organization and then toured the recreation center, where their money will be put to use purchasing new equipment.
sports/recreation
Supervisor Weber explained the importance of exercise at the Center. “Many people in recovery have not experienced fun, sober activities for a very long time. The exercise and recreation equipment we can purchase with the help of Builders Club funds will aid patients in setting and achieving goals for themselves. Thanks to these young people, our patients will build confidence that they can persevere and better their lives.” Builders Club member Hannah Catalino (the daughter of the Center’s recreation director), strongly advocated for supporting the organization’s work. She and the other members recognized that the Byron-Bergen community, like many others, is experiencing the problem of substance abuse, affecting fellow students and their families. Earlier this year, they created handmade cards for the Center to help inspire and motivate recovering patients. “I think what the Center does is important,” Catalino said. “I see how deeply the people here care for patients. They all feel it in their hearts and we in the Club do, too. We all wanted to help.” Builders Club has been active at ByronBergen Jr./Sr. High School for three years and has about a dozen members. The group began at the Middle School, but has expanded the opportunity to all students

They’ve participated in hurricane relief efforts for Puerto Rico and at the Elementary School’s Fall Festival. They can also be seen helping out at community pancake breakfasts. “Byron-Bergen is a NYS School District of Character and our students support many activities that promote character,” said Club
advisor Feeney. “Builders Club supports the development of character and leadership. Everything members do during the year is their idea and their choice. They choose to give back, to better their community and to aid those in need.” The Byron-Bergen Builders Club members are: Sarah Fraser, Liam Feeney, Andrea Feeney, Jacey Donahue, Hannah Catalino, Claire Williams, Logan Lewis, Robert Wood, Courtney Pakusch, Evan Harter and Karen Jaczynski.

Spencerport rebounded from an 8-4 early second half deficit to twice tie the game over the final ten minutes before falling short of their first girl’s lacrosse Section V championship as Brighton scored 2:03 into overtime in the Class B title game. Junior Natalie Choate and freshman Lily DePalma gave the Rangers early 1-0 and 21 leads over the first seven minutes before Brighton scored three consecutive goals to take a 4-2 lead. Spencerport sophomore Paige Pohleven gathered the rebound from a Choate shot, made two dekes and scored at 14:27 and tallied again 82 seconds later off an assist from DePalma to again tie the game 4-4. The Barons controlled the last five minutes of the first half and tallied three goals over a 77 second span to lead at the half 7-4 and added the first goal of the second half for their largest lead of the game at 8-4. But the Rangers rallied as Choate scored off of two free-possession calls at 3:50 and 10:47 of the second half to cut the deficit in half. Pohleven completed her hat trick after a great pass from junior Camryn Sack and Choate tied the game 8-8 with her third goal of the contest off an assist from Pohleven at 13:42. Spencerport junior goalie Julia Britton
made two sensational stops on Brighton attackers over the last ten minutes sandwiching a Brighton goal to hold the deficit to just one and that proved key. Taking possession after a timeout with 87 seconds remaining in regulation, Sack charged toward the Barons net and bounced the ball in to tie the game 9-9 with 22 seconds remaining. Spencerport won the overtime draw and held the ball for over one minute without a scoring chance before turning it over where Brighton sophomore Katie Lederman scored her fourth goal of the contest to give the Barons a 10-9 victory. “These girls have fought from the very beginning; fought a tough schedule, fought in games and fought throughout the season and sacrificed a lot and I wish it was different, but hats off to Brighton,” Spencerport head coach Tricia Condon said. “We were here two years ago and last year we lost in the semi’s, so being that close and never being able to finish is something we’re going to carry with us and propel us into the future, but it’s hard right now; this one is going to burn for a little while. If you see tears, it’s because they care.” The Rangers program began 15 years ago in 2003. Rangers Choate, Pohleven, Britton, DePalma and junior Erin Coykendall were all named to the All-Tournament Team.

Hawley optimistic for new legislation on school resource officers, charitable gaming When the Legislature returns from Memorial Day break, Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C,I-Batavia) will be garnering support and fighting for new legislation he is optimistic will move forward before the Legislature adjourns for summer break beginning in late June. Hawley has amended legislation to further expand rights for charitable gaming organizations such as churches, fire departments and not-for-profits to build on the successes of the Charitable Gaming Act that became law last year. Hawley’s bill would allow raffle tickets sold on the internet to be purchased by any resident regardless of their location. Current law only allows for raffle sales in the county by which the charitable organization is operating or any contiguous county. “This is about continuing to modernize our antiquated charitable gaming laws and allowing the wonderful organizations that conduct these raffles to sell tickets all over the state,” Hawley said. “There are tens of thousands of churches, fire departments, non-profits, Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs across New York that are struggling to still provide great community resources while dealing with these outdated regulations.” On the heels of Barbara Underwood’s appointment to fill the last several months of Eric Schneiderman’s term as New York attorney general, Hawley is making a renewed push for legislation that would return power to the voters in the case New York’s comptroller or attorney general resigns or passes away. Currently, the Legislature has the power to hand-pick candidates to fill these vacancies no matter how long of a term is left to serve, while Hawley’s bill would require a statewide election. “We have seen far too many statewide elected officials leave office in disgrace, and setting aside the need for more honest government officials, the citizens of this state should always have the supreme right to elect who they wish, not the Legislature,” Hawley said. “This legislation

is about protecting our democratic process and sanctity of elections, and I am hopeful it will gain much support after recent events.” Following the string of deadly school shootings in recent months, Hawley has introduced new legislation that would allow school districts to employ retired police officers as school safety officers and continue to receive their retirement benefits. In March, Hawley sent a public letter to Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie requesting $50,000 for each school across the state to hire resource officers. “This is about priorities, and I cannot think of a priority more preeminent than the safety and security of our students,” Hawley said. “My bill includes $50,000 in state funding per school to offset the cost of hiring security officers and an increase of the cap for retired police officers who are receiving a pension in order for them to earn between $30,000 and $50,000 per year.” Provided information Ask about our

Genesee Valley Arts Grants, part of the Decentralization Program of the New York State Council on the Arts, are administered by the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts in Monroe and Livingston County. The grants are intended to support art and cultural programming such as exhibitions, workshops, public installations, demonstrations, performances, festivals, screenings, and readings. Projects may range from local cultural traditions to contemporary creative expression. Ideally, the funded projects are community-based, have far-reaching appeal, and are broad and inclusive in their reach. Art and cultural events are an opportunity for life-long learning, entertainment, and overall life enrichment. The goal, through the Genesee Valley Arts Grants, is to increase advocacy and access to the arts in Livingston and Monroe County communities that traditionally have been underserved (those communities who have limited access to services, may be marginalized due to geography, race, economic status, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, or disability). The desired result is a higher sense of community, identity, and positive outlook on the role of art and culture for life in the Genesee Valley Region of Western New York.
New and innovative initiatives, that have the potential of becoming sustainable and independent, are encouraged. Applications are funded with priorities of: new programming, service to under-served populations, artistic merit, community involvement and feasibility. The applicant must be a non-profit organization located in Livingston or Monroe County, or an artist working in partnership with a non-profit organization (this includes churches and towns/villages). Applicants under the Artist in Education or Individual Artist Tier may apply as individuals. This year the Council will be awarding over $100,000 in grants between Livingston and Monroe Counties. Applicants may apply for up to three grants totaling $5,000. The average grant is $1,500 per project. Beginning in June, Grant Seminars will be offered to familiarize applicants with the grant writing and application process. First-time applicants are required to attend one seminar. RSVP required, two days in advance. For more information, and a full schedule of upcoming seminars, please visit grants.gvartscouncil.org. Program development and grant-writing assistance are also available by contacting the Program Coordinator, by phone: 243-6785 or by email: melissa@gvartscouncil.org. Provided Information

Seven players score as Blue Devils baseball advances to final by Warren Kozireski Third-seed Brockport plated six runs in the first inning and never looked back in a 9-7 victory over second-seed PittsfordMendon in the Section V Class A1 baseball semi-finals played at Hilton. Senior Frank Lauricella led off the game with a double to deep right-center field and came home with the game’s first run on an RBI single by sophomore second baseman Sam Velletri. After a Cole Penders walk, senior Gord Fisher drove in Velletri with an RBI single to right, which put runners at first and third. Ashton Scott grounded into an RBI fielder’s choice and took second on an errant throw as the Vikings tried to complete the double-play. Another error along with Dominic Passafiume being hit by a pitch loaded the bases before Scott scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0 Blue Devils. One out later senior Quinlan Ignaszak drove in two more runs when his grounder went off the first baseman’s glove for an infield single. Brockport made it 7-0 with another run in the top of the third. Scott led off with a walk and Nick Nealon reached on a throwing error. A fielder’s choice put runners at first and third before sophomore Troy Leibert drove in Scott on a fielder’s choice. Mendon came back with four runs in the bottom of the third on a wild pitch, an RBI
double and a two-run home run to cut the Blue Devils lead to 7-4. But Brockport scored two important insurance runs in the fifth when Fisher led off with a single and, one out later, scored when the throw to third on Nealon’s single sailed out of play and sent Nealon to third. Leibert was hit by a pitch and James Atkins walked to load the bases before Nealon came across the plate on a wild pitch to advance the Blue Devils lead to 9-4. Mendon scored three unearned runs with two outs in the sixth inning and had the tying runs on base in the seventh before Fisher retired the final batter on a called strike three to earn the save. Lauricella started the game for Brockport and struck out three while allowing only two hits but four runs over three innings of work. Leibert came on for three innings of relief and allowed the two unearned runs and three singles to earn the victory. “There are no ugly wins,” Brockport head coach Matt Davis said. “Mistakes were made, but that’s part of Section V baseball. They beat us twice during the regular season and I think the hardest thing to do in sports is beat the same team three times in one season.” Brockport lost to Canandaigua 4-0 in the Section V Class A1 final to end their season.
Cadets rally falls short in playoffs by Warren Kozireski Trailing 7-1 on the road to Gates Chili in the first round of the Class AA Section V softball playoffs, Hilton rallied for five runs in the sixth inning, but fell short in a 7-6 loss ending their campaign. Gates Chili took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Cadets quickly tied the game 1-1 in their half of the second. Freshman catcher MacKenzie Pearson stroked a one-out single down the left field line and junior Alivia Ruta followed with a single down the right field line putting runners at first and third. Ruta then intentionally got into a rundown on a delayed steal allowing Pearson to cross the plate. Gates Chili scored three runs in the bottom of the second and added three more in the fourth to take a 7-1 lead, but the Cadets would not go quietly. Third baseman Brooke Schmidt reached on a walk to begin the sixth inning rally
and reached second on a fielder’s choice and third on a wild pitch. Freshman left fielder Annalise Smith then hit a triple to score Schmidt and left for a pinch runner when hurt on the slide into third. Senior shortstop Alyssa Juergens stroked an RBI double off the center field wall and scored on Pearson’s two-run home run over the left-center field wall. Ruta and junior Hannah Pearson both reached on errors putting runners at first and third and senior second baseman Siena Saluzzo plated Ruta with an RBI bloop single to center to cut the Spartans lead to 7-6. The Cadets did get the tying run on base in the seventh inning when Juergens reached on a two-out walk, but the game and season ended on a fly-out to center field. Juergens, Saluzzo and Kayla Nellis all completed their high school athletic careers.

C-C’s TerHaar signs with Mercyhurst University Lakers lacrosse team Churchville-Chili High School senior Ryan TerHaar has signed his letter of intent to play for the Division 2 Mercyhurst University Lakers lacrosse team in Erie, Pennsylvania. The signing ceremony was held on May 16 and was attended by family, friends and Churchville-Chili coaches. TerHaar is excited to begin studies at Mercyhurst’s Ridge College of Intelligence Studies and Applied Sciences, where he will major in intelligence analysis. TerHaar said, “Mercyhurst has a really good lacrosse team and it will be challenging to play with them. It’s also the No.1 school in the country for my career path, which is exciting for me. I like the small

campus, the atmosphere and the people I’ve met, and it’s still close to home.” Churchville-Chili HS lacrosse coach Donald Benedict, who is a 2011 Mercyhurst graduate and past Laker himself, said, “Ryan’s role on our team is vital, but often goes unsung. As a defensive player, he doesn’t get the glorified statistics like goals and assists. He covers the offensive threats and takes most of the face-offs. His stats are pure will and grit.” “Ryan is a really exciting player to watch. He has great stick skills and is exceptionally fast in what is arguably the fastest game out there. He is so committed to the mental aspect of the game, he watches film on opponent play and on himself. The coaching staff jokes that he knows more than we do, and sometimes, he does.” Benedict said that TerHaar has been “an absolute pleasure to coach for the last four years.” He is especially proud that the student has chosen Mercyhurst and will be playing for the same coach he played for during his time in college. Churchville Athletic Director Michael Murray was also on hand to congratulate TerHaar and his family. “We couldn’t be prouder of Ryan,” he said. “He’s a great kid, a hard worker and has been an asset to our lacrosse team for his entire high school career. He has a great future ahead of him.” Provided information

Improvement to be made to Sweden Dog Park The Sweden Dog Park pond was filled this week to the delight of dogs and dog owners alike. In a few weeks, a fence will be installed around the pond. Located within the large dog side of the dog park, the pond is a favorite with members but two issues have arisen. First, some owners don’t want their dogs in the pond. The fence will allow those owners the freedom of using the large dog side
without the impossible task of keeping the dog out of the pond. Second, every time the park crew drains the pond for cleaning, the large dog side of the park is closed for two to three days. The fence will allow the dog park to be used continuously. Sweden’s Dog Park is part of the Monroe County Dog Park System. It has been tremendously popular since its opening in 2015. Comments Brockport residents help Stamp Out Hunger
Hamlin, Where The Heart Is! SAVE THE DATE
Thank you to all the Brockport residents and our local Letter Carriers for making this year’s Stamp Out Hunger drive a big success. In just one day, 1,211 pounds of food were collected and donated to the Brockport Ecumenical Food Shelf. We are so grateful for the generosity of our neighbors who set this food out and for our local postal workers who picked it up. During the summer months when children are not in school, many families find their food budgets don’t stretch far enough. This drive has helped us keep our shelves stocked and ready to meet the need. And, if you missed the drive, you can still help us reduce hunger here in Brockport by sending tax-deductible donations to the Brockport Food Shelf at 14 State Street, Brockport, NY 14420. You can also bring food donations to that address on Thursdays or call 637-8169 for an appointment.

Kathy Hayes Director Brockport Ecumenical Food Shelf
Low Bridge High Water marks its sixth year This could have been the year we were rained out when the temperature hovered in the low 50s and the rain came down until 10:30 on Saturday, May 12. Magically, it stopped just in time for our Saturday canalfront celebration which recorded record attendance. It was cold, but not too cold to sit and enjoy music from the Brockport Buskers and our headliner, Chris Wilson. Awards for the 4th grade poster winners (the winning poster advertises next year’s festival) were followed by outstanding performances from the 4th grade chorus and the 4th and 5th grade Hill Hawk strings. Activities sponsored by the Mom’s Club and the Seymour Library teens entertained the kids. Genesee Rowing Club offered information on rowing programs; Berts Box Fitness hosted fitness training demonstrations, and for the cold weather hardy there were kayaks to rent. At the end of the afternoon festival goers enjoyed free pizza and lemonade at the welcome center, and in between, hot chocolate and coffee from Java Junction. Thanks to all for making this year’s festival a success. As is customary the festival began with a Thursday evening canal-focused slide talk at the Morgan Manning House. Tom Grasso, president emeritus of the Canal Society of NYS took us back to 1918 with the barge canal enlargement, the engineering project that brought us the canal embankments on the north side of the canal in Brockport and today’s tree removals. Stoneyard’s Friday night craft beer festival in their new location on Merchant Street featured more than 30 breweries, two bands, and was well attended with nary a problem. Low Bridge High Water was generously sponsored by Alicia Fink Jewelry, Brockport Lions Club, Brockport Merchants Association, Brockport Rotary, Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor and NYS Canal Corportion, Brockport Chamber of Commerce, Java Junction, ProBrockport. Stoneyard Brewing Company, Strong West, The College at Brockport, Walk!Bike!Brockport!, Wegman’s, and Westside News. Five pizzerias provided pizza at no cost or a reduced price which was much appreciated: Krony’s Pizza, Main Street Eatery, Mark’s Pizzeria, Perri’s Pizzeria, Salvatore’s Old Fashioned Pizzeria. A special thank you to Susan Smith, poster and programs designer, The College at Brockport for printing festival posters and programs, Archie Kutz for organizing and coordinating Saturday’s canalfront events, and Stoneyard Brewing for donating craft beer proceeds to two worthwhile causes. None of this would have been possible without the hard working, creative planning committee who brought it all together for a 6th year - A big thank you to all of you. Mark May 16 through 18, 2019 on your calendars for next year’s festival.

Riga-Churchville’s Memorial Day Salute
Memorial Day, a solemn day of remembrance honoring those who died while defending our nation, took on special significance this year in the Town of Riga. The entire Memorial Day weekend honored Pvt. Harvey C. Noone who died in 1918 while serving in France as a runner in the US Army. On May 25, the Town of Riga conducted a tree planting ceremony in his honor at the Legion Post Home. Riga Town Supervisor Brad O’Brocta observed that, as a nation, we can never do enough to honor those, like Harvey, who have died in service to our nation. He stressed the importance of passing on to our families and, especially, our children the rich history associated with what our veterans have done to preserve our way of life for future generations of Americans. And, he encouraged everyone to take time over the Memorial Day weekend to share with family and friends the story of Harvey’s life and the contribution he made through his bravery and service. Such stories can bring history to life. They can inspire our youth and instill a sense of pride and purpose in citizens of all ages. At the Memorial Day Ceremony, members of the Churchville Chili Band, under the direction of Kevin Mead and Terry Bacon, played “Over There,” a popular WWI song. The tune is uplifting and the lyrics embody the idealism, determination and bravery of those, young “Yanks”, like Harvey, who enlisted and went “over there” to fight for the ideals and freedoms that we, as Americans, hold dear for ourselves and our allies and who vowed not to come back “until it was over, over there”. Harvey C. Noone Legion Post Commander, Gilbert Budd, shared the details of Harvey’s military service and his bravery in the battle near San Quentin, France, where he lost his life, as it was described in a letter his commanding officer wrote to Harvey’s sister. Harvey served as the Parade Grand Marshall. A life size photo of him was displayed in the convertible that followed the Color Guard through the Village. Along the

Harvey C. Noone as Parade Grand Marshall, driven by Tom Dyer, Barnard Chevrolet. Photo by Karen Carr. parade route, individuals saluted the image of Harvey as it passed by. As the convertible approached the four corners, it was inspiring to see the image of Harvey framed by four Hometown Hero banners, bearing his name, waiting to salute him and his sacrifice as the car slowly proceeded through the intersection on the way to the cemetery. The final tribute to all our fallen heroes occurred at the cemetery’s Veterans Memorial, where the names of those local residents who died in the Civil War are inscribed. There, final prayers were said, a rifle salute was given, followed by echo taps and in conclusion bagpipers played “Amazing Grace.” As the crowd dispersed, many stopped by the gravesites of Harvey C. Noone and his Gold Star Mother, Mary. There an historical board, created by Ron Belczak, Town and Village Historian, was on display. It provided more information about Harvey for folks to read and to add to conversations and discussions involving the stories of the lives, times and sacrifices of Harvey and our other Hometown Heroes. The preschoolers at Ogden Recreation’s Little Red Schoolhouse have been learning about the history of Spencerport, the Erie Canal and the bridges and transportation along the canal. On a recent field trip to the Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum, Director Simon Devenish and Town Historian Carol Coburn brought the students’ newfound knowledge to life. Devenish welcomed the students for a presentation at the Depot then Coburn walked with them to the gazebo where they learned more information. The children were also able to see the building where the bridge tenders raise and lower the bridge. The Galley Restaurant welcomed the group for ice cream after their tour. Provided photo.

Brockport Police report Between May 13 through May 19, the Brockport Police handled 237 calls for service to include one annoyance call, three harassment reports, four family trouble reports, 69 special attentions and conducted 63 traffic stops. Note that the above calls do not represent all of the calls received by the Brockport Police. It should be noted that not all of the calls are found to be as dispatched once on scene. Community message: It is that time of year again. With the sun shining and crystal clear nights, it is time for the summer nights around a fire with friends. The Brockport Police wants to remind residents of the open burn ordinance. Per Brockport Village Code Chapter 21-8 and 21-9, a resident may enjoy a fire as long as it is in an approved burn pit. Open burning is defined by the chapter as “The burning of materials wherein products of combustion are emitted directly into the ambient air without passing through a stack of chimney from an enclosed chamber (New York State Fire Code, 2007, Section 302). An approved burn pit is any type of manufactured appliance that is enclosed or has a lid. The Brockport Police want to stress safety when residents are enjoying their open burn. To do so, we ask that the fire stays under control and that a water source (ie. garden hose), or other fire-extinguisher is nearby for immediate extinguish. Per Chapter 21-9 Section A, if a fire is deemed offensive or smoke is going into another resident’s windows, the fire must be extinguished. The Brockport Police wish everyone a safe and happy summer. Tomatoes: Tips for successful crop
rieties, as is pruning, which will hasten the first harvest, improve fruit quality and make harvesting easier. Cornell explains that staked and pruned plants are more susceptible to blossom end rot and sunscald, but allowing indeterminate varieties to sprawl takes up more space and increases the chance of disease. Tomato stakes should be put in place soon after planting and should be driven 8-10 inches into the ground. Prune the plants by removing suckers - which are stems growing from where leaf stems meet at the main stem - when they reach 2-4 inches long. Do not remove leaves which shade fruit to help prevent sunscald. It is also possible to grow several tomato plants in a row between heavy duty stakes or posts spaced about 4 feet apart. Use twine to weave in and around posts and plants. Tomato cages are another way to provide support for plants. According to Cornell, avoid excessive nitrogen applications. This can cause excessive foliage and poor fruit set. Poor fruit set can also be caused by heavy rainfall or temperatures which are too high - above 90 degrees; or too low - below 55 degrees. To help control diseases such as blossom end rot, early and late blights and Fusarium and Verticillium wilts, avoid wetting foliage when watering and remove weeds to improve air circulation. If plants become affected by disease, remove diseased plant parts when plants are dry and remember to rake and dispose of diseased leaves and stalks.

C-C seniors learn the secrets of social media marketing during National Small Business Week The talented staff of Rochester’s awardwinning social media marketing firm, Helen & Gertrude, welcomed visiting seniors from Churchville-Chili High School on May 2, 2018. The students were there as part of the ACT for Education and Monroe County Small Business Blitz, celebrating 2018’s National Small Business Week. Students were given an overview of the agency’s work and clients by principals Becca Post and Leire Bascaran; then heard from a media strategist, copywriter, designer and data analyst. “Our social media is so much more than friends and cute memes,” explained Post. “It’s serious end-to-end product branding and comprehensive marketing services.” An interactive exercise introduced student teams to the challenges inherent in creating attention-getting, effective marketing messaging for a specific audience on social media. Each team picked an interesting object and was asked to develop a one-minute sales pitch to the group. The visitors were also able to experience a marketing staple - focus group research. In addition to having an interest in marketing and other creative careers, the student group was limited to young women, the target customers for Helen & Gertrude client, Bioré® skincare. They enjoyed answering questions and sharing their opinions, perceptions and attitudes on the company’s products. The young participants got a rare, insider’s view of how marketers gather feedback and data, and then analyze it to help their clients succeed. The goal of the Small Business Blitz is to connect students from Monroe County school districts with area businesses. This gives them a behind-the-scenes look at industry and the careers offered in our

Now that vegetable gardens are being planted, it’s time once again to focus on the most popular of vegetable garden plants - the tomato. Here are some tips for this year’s crop. According to the National Gardening Association, tomatoes like soil pH in the 6.0 to 6.8 range - which is the range in which most vegetables grow best. On the pH scale, 7.0 is neutral, so tomatoes like a slightly acid soil. Inexpensive kits for testing soil pH are available and you should make a practice of testing your soil every 3-5 years. If your soil pH is too low, you will need to add lime; if it is too high, sulfur is added to the soil to lower pH. Remember that soil pH affects how well plants are able to make use of nutrients in the soil, so it does impact how well your garden plants thrive. Cornell University notes that tomatoes do better if planted deeper than they were in the containers in which you purchased them. They can be set in the ground with the soil level just below the lowest leaves and roots will form along the buried stem, creating a strong root system. Make sure your tomatoes are planted in an area that gets 6-8 hours of sunlight each day and is well drained. To reduce the risk of disease, don’t plant where you have recently grown crops such as potatoes, peppers, eggplant or tomatoes. Mulching plants can help suppress weeds and hold in soil moisture. This is important as tomatoes need a consistent supply of moisture and must be watered if there is less than one inch of rain per week. Evenly moist soil helps to prevent blossom end rot and can also help prevent cracking after the fruit absorbs water too fast after a heavy rain following dry conditions. Cornell University says that raised beds, black plastic mulch and providing moisture through drip irrigation can help your total yield. Support for plants can also affect performance. Staking is helpful Tomatoes are the most popular vegetable garden plant. Photo courtesy for indeterminate va- of oxfordaustralia.files.woodpress.com.
