Congressman Morelle honors Vietnam veterans in Spencerport

SGNY welcomes Common Bond Quartet

Southern Gospel NY welcomes the Common Bond Quartet to Spencerport on September 9. There will be a free mini concert at noon at the Spencerport Gazebo. They will then be doing a full concert starting at 4 p.m. at Spencerport Bible Church, 1948 North Union Street, Spencerport. A donation of $15 will be received at the door to help Common Bond Quartet with their ministry and traveling expenses. Those 19 and under are admitted free.

Common Bond Quartet is based near Ashland, Kentucky. The group began in 2009 with four friends who loved Southern Gospel quartet music. Thinking they’d only sing in the Lexington area a few times a year, they soon found that God had other plans for them. In the past 10 years, Common Bond has twice been nominated as a New Horizon Group of the year and has had at least 10 songs make their way up on the Singing News Gospel Music charts. They have sung in churches from Canada to Florida, Virginia to Oklahoma, and in most states in between.

A dynamic practical preacher, Pastor Denise is known for sharing the gospel through the lens of everyday life experiences and application.

Lyndonville merges with Holley for the fall 2023 football season

The newly combined Holley-Lyndonville 8-man varsity football team began preseason practices for the fall 2023 season on August 19. Players and coaches got the chance to meet their new teammates and bond over pizza ahead of preseason. There are currently 18 players on the roster.

The Holley-Lyndonville football team is coached by Wil Prince and assisted by Wyatt Wink. Prince has coached football at Holley since 2014. Their first game will be at Holley’s Stadium on Saturday, September 2, against Allegany-Limestone Central at 1 p.m.

“Our main goal is to be as successful as we can and to build the program back to what it was,” said Wil Prince, Head Coach. “Many of the players from Lyndonville have been on three different teams in the past three years. Our goal is to make them feel that this is THEIR team. We want them to be proud to be part of this program. We would love to see this merger continue to grow for years to come.”

“We really want to make the Lyndonville players and community feel welcome,” said Daniel Courtney, Holley MS/HS Athletic Director and Assistant Principal. “It is a win-win for both schools, the merger creates opportunities for a lot of students. We would like to develop and build numbers at the Modified A

“We are excited for our new partnership with Holley for the upcoming season,” said James Zeliff, Lyndonville Athletic Director. “We are grateful for Holley’s willingness to host us this year and hope our partnership leads to a successful season this year and years to come. The return to Section V and being able to work with a school that is also in the Genesee Region league will make the logistics much easier.

I am hopeful that we will eventually be able to build a program that can return to 11-man football, but I think that the recent success of area programs in 8 man football (OakfieldAlabama, Pembroke) proves that 8man football is a viable and competitive option for smaller schools while they look to rebuild. Holley gained some momentum in 8-man football last year and we hope the addition of some of our Lyndonville kids help keep the ball rolling.”

Holley introduced its 11-man football program in 2002 and moved to 8man in 2018. Holley did have a 6-man football team from 1948-1955. Provided information and photo

Cattails

In the realm of native vs. exotic plants, cattails have an interesting story. Cattails are native to our area, but there is a species here which is non-native or exotic. Cattails have some benefits and visual interest in the landscape, but can be a problem due to their aggressive growing habits.

According to Western New York PRISM (Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management), cattails are perennial wetland plants. They produce dense, rhizome mats that can extend 30 inches into the soil. The native variety is broadleaf cattail, latifolia . The exotic variety is narrowleaf cattail, T. angustifolia Narrowleaf cattail leaves are 3/4 inch to 1/2 inch wide and broadleaf cattail leaves can be up to 1-1/2 inches in width. The flowering head of broadleaf cattails is larger and stouter than the narrowleaf cattail flowering head. The narrowleaf cattail flower head also has a gap between the female and male parts of the flower. Western New York PRISM says the two species can hybridize and produce offspring that are often taller and more aggressive than either parent.

and buoyant seeds have also been used as padding for bedding, pillows and diapers.

The Ladybird Johnson Wildlife Center explains that the flowering spike of cattails has a tallish, clublike spike of tiny, male flowers that extends directly above the brownish cylinder of female flowers. It is that gap or lack of a gap between the two that can be most helpful in determining if the cattail species is native or exotic.

On the positive side, native cattail does provide favorable habitat for birds including red-winged blackbirds and marsh birds such as ducks and geese as well as muskrats. The rootstock is edible, being mostly starch. Native Americans ground it into a meal and early colonists also used it for food. Young shoots can be eaten like asparagus and the immature flower spikes can even be boiled and eaten like corn on the cob. Sprouts at the tip of the rootstock can be eaten in salads or boiled and served as greens.

Additionally, Native Americans used cattail leaves for thatched roofs, woven floor mats and sandals. The feathery seeds were used for baby beds. The Ladybird Johnson Wildlife Center says when mixed with ash and lime, the seeds form a cement that is reportedly harder than marble. The water repellent

Cattails are a striking plant and the flower heads can be used in both fresh and dried arrangements. Home gardeners can grow them in water gardens, ponds or bogs and they can also be used as thick privacy screens. Because cattails can be aggressive, consider planting them in containers, one per 12 to 19-inch pot. Cattails will naturally increase in number through seed dispersal and rhizome reproduction. Each fragmented piece of rhizome has nodes which can send up new shoots.

On the negative side, because cattails are aggressive and can rapidly dominate an area, they can become a problem in wetlands because they impede water flow. The dense rhizome mats they form and the thick layer of leaf litter produced can also exclude the growth of other plants and create a threat to biodiversity. Western New York PRISM says herbicide application can help control cattails that have spread, especially if treated during dry periods in the summer. Water-level manipulation has been used in combination with other methods to achieve control. PRISM says mowing and then flooding the cut stems can be effective, but cutting too early in the season prior to flowering can encourage re-sprouting.

Kendall Elementary School’s safety patrol – the Safety and Responsibility Squad – is anything but traditional. This year’s successful candidates received notification in the mail and a mission to complete one act of kindness by September 1 to improve the quality of life of the Kendall community or a community member. Among those who have completed their missions are (l-r) Emily who picked up garbage on the way from her home to the community park, Clarke who volunteered to cook hot dogs and hamburgers at the Hamlin VFW, and Brynley who weeded a sick neighbor’s garden. Politicians and hypocrisy Opinion

I read Assemblyman Hawley’s Politically Speaking piece published in the August 27 edition of the Westside News and found the second to last sentence quite typical of what you hear out of politicians these days, specifically the hypocrisy. It read, “As New Yorkers, we shouldn’t have to worry about career politicians in Albany picking away our rights piece by piece.” My question is, what constitutes being a career politician? The Assemblyman has been in office for 17 years. Where’s his cut-off for someone being designated a “career politician.” I’d be curious to know where he stands on term limits. As far as I know, being a member of the NYS Assembly is a full-time job, yet any number of them have second jobs, including Mr. Hawley. Maybe he considers those without second jobs “career politicians,” although out of 150 members of the Assembly, only 7-15 have earnings higher than what they make as members of the Assembly (nysfocus.com) again, including Mr. Hawley. Does he suggest

they should all have second jobs so they wouldn’t be considered “career politicians”? We’ll have to wait and see what happens next year because by 2025 no members of the Assembly will be allowed to earn more than $35,000 from outside income. As members of the Assembly they currently make $142,000 so the cap on outside income doesn’t sound like a bad idea unless the position doesn’t demand full -time work. If that’s the case, he should be advocating to cut those positions and corresponding pay to part time.

Although I disagree with him on any number of issues, I also think when it comes to representing his agricultural constituents and veterans he has done a pretty good job. It just struck a nerve that a politician who has been in office for 17 years points fingers at “career politicians.” A perfect example of the hypocrisy that breeds in most politicians.

Tuesday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

If there are any changes to the Town of Hamlin business hours or a need to close the Town Hall facilities, all payments can be mailed to our office. Any changes will be updated on the Town of Hamlin website at www.hamlinny. org.
