Song and Service Concert honors long-time choir director and Compeer volunteer G. Robert Dean by Grace Griffee G. Robert “Bob” Dean has been singing all of his life. So when his fellow church members at Parma Baptist “Community” Church decided to honor him – they honored him with a song. A free concert was held at the Parma Baptist Church in early March and was promoted as a concert to benefit Compeer Rochester. Compeer provides healing friendships and mentoring for community members living with mental illness. But the real story behind the concert is that it was a surprise to honor Dean, who has served as Parma’s choir director and a member of the Spencerport Community Chorus for over 50 years, and has been a Compeer volunteer for 19 years.

Brandon Arva, minister of music and administrative office assistant, and Jodi Brown, church moderator, approached Don Besig and Nancy Price, local songwriters, to commission a song in Dean’s honor. “We wanted to make sure that one of the greatest men we have ever known was recognized in a very special way because of what he has done for both of us, our church and our community,” said Brown. She and Arva have known Dean their whole lives. The two had become friends with Besig and Price by participating in choral workshops that the composers held at their home church, Perinton Presbyterian, over the years. It was that friendship and the special circumstances that propelled Besig and Price to accept another

commission even though they already had one they were working on. “We wanted to get something to present sooner rather than later because Bob suffers from Alzheimer’s disease,” said Arva. “Realizing that his memory is not going to get any better, we wanted to make sure that he had the best chance of remembering this special dedication.” After responding to a list of questions, the anthem was delivered three months later in September of last year. “From then, the focus became finding a way to present it to Bob and to keep it a secret from him,” said Arva. “We came up with the idea of doing a fundraising concert to take the focus off of the commission, and chose a charity that has special meaning to Bob – Compeer Rochester.” Dean was a social worker at the Monroe County Department of Social Services and Hillside Children’s Center for 32 years. When he retired 19 years ago, he began volunteering with Compeer Rochester and has been mentoring the same person ever since. One of nine siblings, Dean was brought up in the church. His father, Fred E. Dean, was the pastor of Greece Baptist Church where Bob married his wife, Nancy, in 1957. “We all sang,” said Bob. So when the couple joined Parma Baptist Church, it was natural that he became involved with the choir. “Our minister at the time wanted us to sing “The Messiah,” which we weren’t equipped to do, so we asked other churches to participate,” remembered Dean. “That’s how the Spencerport Community Chorus was started.” The chorus now averages 40 members from local church choirs. Dean’s favorite hymn is “I Would Be True,” so the composers used the melody set to new lyrics for the commissioned anthem. The concert consisted of music by the Parma Baptist Choir, directed by Dean, and the Greece Baptist Choir, directed by the Rev. Steve Gretz. They were joined by some members of the Spencerport Community Chorus, directed by Margaret Page Colucci.

Heather Baker, events and outreach manager for Compeer Rochester, spoke about the organization, and Dean and his Compeer friend, Jeff Rolick, shared what the program has meant to them. Through a free-will offering, the concert raised $750 for Compeer Rochester. “The concert was exactly what Compeer is all about: friendship and community,” said Baker. “Seeing so many people come together to celebrate a match was inspiring.” She added that the organization works hard to break the stigma of mental illness and to bring those living with it into the community, and that having the church community take an interest in what Compeer does goes a long way in achieving that goal. “We’re so grateful for the support provided by the congregation and of course feel so fortunate to have a volunteer like Bob working with our organization,” she said. The concert concluded with the three choirs combining to sing I Will Be True, the commissioned version of the song. “They told me to sit down and then the choir got up to sing with the other choir members,” said Dean. “My jaw just dropped to the floor.” The Dean family, including their two sons, Bill and Jim, and daughter, Cathy, their spouses and four of their six grandchildren were there to witness the surprise. Dean was presented with an autographed copy of the anthem and a certificate from the choir. Besig and Price submit all of their compositions and commissions to Shawnee Press/Hal Leonard, one of the largest publishers of choral and instrumental music in the world, for publication. “I Will Be True” was accepted for publication and will be included in the fall 2015 new releases with the following dedication: In honor of G. Robert Dean’s more than 50 years of musical service to Parma Baptist Church, and to the Spencerport Community Chorus.

Focus is on clean environment at GCC’s 10th ECOfest Cool Kids ECOfest at Genesee Community College is marking its tenth anniversary this year and once again will offer the public many opportunities to celebrate Earth Day. The event is planned for Saturday, April 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at GCC’s Batavia campus. Activities include recycling opportunities, a student photography exhibit, and for the first time, an educational event that will precede ECOfest on Thursday, April 9. RIT associate environmental science professor Karl Korfmacher will discuss bringing

sustainability into curriculum. The talk, presented by GCC’s Sustainability Committee, is free and open to the public and will be held from 12:30 - 2 p.m. in Room T102 of the Conable Technology Building on the Batavia campus. ECOfest is co-sponsored by GCC’s Student Activities Office, College Village and Brockport-based Generation Cool. The event is free and open to the public. Cool Kids’ Steve Appleton says Earth Day can be celebrated everyday, but ECOfest offers an opportunity for the community to come together to cel-

ebrate. “For ten years, we’ve been making a huge difference in educating young and old about the importance each individual makes for a clean environment,” Appleton says. “Let’s keep it going.” This year, a favorite recycling initiative returns as electronic waste will again be accepted after a one-year hiatus. Rubber sneakers, paperback books, bikes and bike parts, worn American flags, cell phones, ink cartridges and eyeglasses are also being accepted. New this year is textile recycling. Any

clean clothing or cloth will be accepted for recycling - no dirty or moldy items, organizers say. Each recycled item earns a Cool Kids ECO-raffle ticket for a chance to win prizes including a mountain bike. At 10 a.m., Buffalo-based musician Susan Rozler will kick things off with her Mama Earth’s Kitchen Band. The performance includes instruments from all over the world as well as homemade recycled ones. The audience will have the opportunity to play and sing with the band.

“Step Up!” capital campaign launched at historic Morgan-Manning House

585-349-9100

“Step Up!” is the capital campaign slogan that describes both the project at the Morgan-Manning House in Brockport, and the supportive community action needed. The cantilevered staircase leading from the second to the third floor is separating from the wall where it is attached. It has been slowly pulling away from the wall over many years with widening gaps and cracks. The stairs lead to the third floor attic and to the “belvedere” on the roof, commonly misnamed a “cupola.” The belvedere, with its commanding view for visitors and its shining light at night, is an iconic part of the stately structure at 151 Main Street, built in 1854. Step Up! also presents the challenge from the Western Monroe Historical Society (WMHS) trustees to its members and the community to help repair the stairway structure and preserve the historic family signatures on the walls of the belvedere. The goal for the campaign is $25,000 which includes the staircase stabilization as well as painting it and extending the painting and wallpapering on the third floor. Handwriting on the wall brings members of historic family into the present Part of the preservation will be the family messages and signatures written on the belvedere wall in the 1900s. Among the many writings and signatures, “Christmas 1933, Sara Morgan Manning” is significant. She was the last remaining Manning when she died at age 96 in the 1964 fire that severely damaged the house. And, her son, Arnold Morgan Manning, recorded his visits to the belvedere: “This

our old house, May 6, 1900; December 10, 1904; June 4, 1911.” There are many other signed mementos on the walls. It was customary for family members to write on the wall when visiting on various holidays. Charles Garlock, Town of Sweden resident and a current trustee on the WMHS board, is related to the Morgan-Manning family. “I am the greatgrandson of Gifford Morgan, who was the second youngest of the seven Morgan children,” Garlock said, reckoning that Sara Morgan-Manning (Gifford’s sister) was his great aunt. “My memories of the Morgan-Manning House as a child are very sketchy. I could not have been any older than five years old when my family visited Sara Manning for Christmas. When my family members’ names were put on the belvedere wall, I suspect they were written by my father (Fletcher Garlock), while my mother watched my brothers and me downstairs.” The personal handwriting of historic family members makes them very much present today in the Morgan-Manning House, as visitors peruse the messages on the wall. The capital project aims to preserve the original writing as much as possible and to photograph them for posterity in archival files. A challenge to emulate founding WMHS members as models The Step Up! challenge comes in the 50th Anniversary year of the founding of the WMHS by volunteers who restored the home after the disastrous 1964 fire. The anniversary theme “Out of the Ashes” uses the Phoenix mythology to celebrate the founding volunteers who saved the home from destruction to a destiny as a preserved landmark for future generations. Today’s board members challenge Western Monroe Historical Society members and the wider community to take the same initiative and pay forward the benefits received in the treasured home for fifty years. “Like our predecessors, we are called upon to preserve the Morgan-Manning House,” said Alicia Fink president of the WMHS board. Fink would like more local citizens to become familiar with the Morgan-Manning House and support the capital project. “This house is so special,” she said, “unfortunately, many people in Brockport have never seen it.” Board members recently entertained members of the Brockport Chamber of Commerce in the house. “The visitors were awestruck at seeing it the first time,” Fink said. To acquaint the public with the house, last years’ 33rd annual “Old Fashion Fourth of July” event included tours of the first floor. Citing the “surprisingly long lines” waiting for the tours, Fink said the tours will continue this year and the second floor will be added, allowing a view of the stairway to the third floor. The capital campaign looks to the end of July as the deadline for raising the $25,000. That deadline means that repairs can be completed by the fall, allowing the belvedere to continue to fascinate children in the public schools’ annual fourth grade tour of the home.

Hospice program, “Pet Peace of Mind®”, recognizes patient-pet bond “No one wants my dog,” a hospice patient said sadly to his nurse. A fall had made it necessary for him to move from home to the Martin-Linsin Hospice Residence where he could receive 24-hour care. Donna Coble, a per diem RN, had been providing him home care services for several months and knew him and his dog quite well. She knew that Denzel, a friendly long haired dachshund, had been his constant companion for more than ten years and was the most important relationship in his life. A widower with no children, he frequently referred to Denzel as “Danny” or “my baby.” “They were the best of buddies,” Donna recalled with a smile. “Denzel would stay by his side all day.” Donna could hear the pain, fear and grief in her patient’s voice as he shared his fears concerning the long term care of Denzel. Troubled by her patient’s distress, Donna thought about the situation and decided, “I’ll take Denzel if no one in the family can take him.” She contacted her patient’s relatives who were relieved that she would take the dog as they were not in a position to care for him. “I’m not really a dog person but I have dogs and, well, I felt bad that he didn’t have anyone to take Denzel. He loved that dog so much and I loved them both so I decided I should take him.” After Denzel came to live with her, Donna and her 11year-old daughter, Julie, brought him to visit at the Residence twice a week. “Who does he sleep with?” her patient had asked her on their first visit. “Well ... he sleeps with me…I can’t believe I let a dog sleep with me.” Donna said with a smile. “Denzel is 11 years old, that’s 77 in people years. It took him awhile to get used to the two other dogs in the household, a Puggle and a Pointer, and the cats and ducks. However, Denzel has now become the Alpha dog which is funny because it looks like he has no legs he’s so long and low to the ground.” Donna took Denzel to visit at the Residence two days before his owner died. “‘Here’s my baby, here’s my baby’ he said as he hugged Denzel.” Donna recounted. “I really think Denzel knew that his daddy was leaving him and that he was going to live with me because he seemed sad and then he came and sat by my side. The nursing staff told me that his owner was very much happier and relieved to know that “his baby” was being taken care of and had a wonderful home on a farm. “

Donna Coble, Hospice RN with Denzel - “I love this little guy!” Provided photo. “I’m very happy that it worked out so well.” Donna said as she embraced Denzel. “I’m very happy his owner got to see him while he was in the Residence and before he passed on. To him Denzel was like his child. It made his last days better knowing that Denzel had a home.”

Unique program The story of Denzel and his owner illustrates the need for the new Pet Peace of Mind® program that Hospice of Orleans has launched. Pet Peace of Mind® allows people to complete their end of life journey without worrying about their pet’s current or future needs. This initiative provides volunteer pet care services for pet owners who are unable to care for their pets while receiving Hospice services. During the first year of operation, services will include: dog and cat care such as walking, playing and waste clean-up; transportation to a Veterinarian for medical care and check-ups; fostering; and providing assistance with pet care and pet exercise. Education and counseling for patients and their families will focus on understanding pet needs and behaviors and planning for the pet’s future. “The exciting thing about this program is that it is in direct response to needs identified by our nursing and aide staff who often encounter situations such as those experienced by our patient and Denzel.” explained Mary Anne Fischer, Executive Director of Hospice of Orleans. “Every day we see the importance of pet-companions to the wellbeing of those receiving hospice services. Pets are allowed to visit in the Martin-Linsin Residence and pet therapy has been an integral part of our program for more than ten years. Our staff has long recognized the importance of the human-pet bond and has wanted to start a pet care program for some time. However, without independent funding, that has not been possible. Now, with start-up funding we are finally able to offer needed services and recruit volunteers to meet this important need.” Pet Peace of Mind® is a national program developed and funded by the Banfield Charitable Trust. Hospice of Orleans is only the second hospice to start the program in New York state, placing it among a select group of hospice providers across the country that are ensuring this important patient need is met. “The human-pet bond is incredibly special. If we can help keep a patient and their pet together, we’ve accomplished what we set out to do,” said Dianne McGill, executive director and CEO of the Banfield Charitable Trust. Volunteers are needed to help provide Pet Peace of Mind® services. Applications to be a Hospice of Orleans volunteer are available at http://www.hospiceoforleans. org/index.php/how-you-can-help/volunteer-with-us or by calling 585-589-5809. Provided information

Top legal team on to the next round

Hilton High School’s Mock Trial Team heads to Buffalo after winning Monroe County championship by Grace Griffee Hilton High School’s Mock Trial Team had tears in their eyes after competing in the final round of the Monroe County Mock Trial competition and taking their first local championship. In their 14-year history, the team has made it to the semi-finals four times, but had never cinched a championship title. The team competed in the final round on March 25 against Brighton High School at Brighton Town Court. The mock trial was heard before Hon. Joanne M. Winslow, New York State Supreme Court Justice. Hilton’s win means that the team will be representing Monroe County in the state Regional Mock Trial Competition on April 18 at the Robert H. Jackson United States Courthouse in Buffalo. “I’m so proud of their hard work and what they have accomplished,” said their coach, Mary Pignato. A Criminal Justice and Fundamentals of Law teacher at Hilton High School, Pignato has been coaching the team since its inception in the late 1990s. In 2001, she invited Hon. Michael A. Sciortino, Parma Town Justice and Acting Rochester City Court Judge, to help coach. Also currently serving as coach is Bianca S. D’Angelo, Esq., Monroe County District Attorney and Hilton High School 2004 graduate. She is one of at least four Hilton Mock Trial participants who have gone on to careers in law, including Brian Jacek, an associate with Nixon Peabody; Craig Rapp, assistant attorney general; Cory Maggio, judge advocate general. “It has been a sincere pleasure to observe these students compete at the high school level, and then to see them graduate from college and law school, and now see them as practicing attorneys in our county, state, and country,” said Justice Sciortino. Members of the current Mock Trial team are: Nicole Bradbury, Sam D’Angelo (Bianca’s brother), Shannon McPhee, Josh Mooney, Alyssa Reese, Peter Shannon and Kate West. Kate, a junior, joined the team as a freshman because her brother, Bobbie, was also on the team. “I’ve been a witness all three years and have really improved,” she said. “You get used to the types of questions.” Kate says the experience has helped her with her public speaking skills and has piqued her interest in law. “Seeing the professionals and talking with them, it makes me think that law could be a possible career.”

Hilton was undefeated in the semi-finals, advancing over McQuaid Jesuit, Mercy, Allendale Columbia and Churchville-Chili High Schools. A total of 13 schools participated with each team having six competing students – three acting as attorneys and three as witnesses. The teams are issued a case/fact pattern and are challenged to represent the respective parties at a bench trial before local judges and attorneys. This year, the fact pattern involves a civil case of alleged conversion of funds raised by a not-for-profit corporation. The defendant, the treasurer for the not-for-profit, is alleged to have a gambling addiction. Hilton represented the plaintiff, but may be asked to switch to the defense in the regional competition. “We have seen our students devote an incredible amount of time and energy learning how to be trial lawyers and witnesses including conducting research, drafting questions and answers, manipulating case-patterns, formulating arguments and objections, and rehearsing opening statements, direct and cross-examinations, re-direct and re-cross examinations, and closing arguments,” said Justice Sciortino. “It really teaches you how to think on your feet,” said Senior Josh Mooney, the team’s lead attorney. A Mock Trial participant for four years, Josh plans to study biostatistics, not law, in college. He said that the confidence and public speaking skills he’s gained will help him no matter what career he pursues. The Mock Trial Program is operated under the leadership of retired United States Magistrate Judge, Hon. William G. Bauer, of the law firm of Woods Oviatt Gilman, and sponsored through the New York Bar Association and Monroe County Bar Association. Teams introduce evidence and are graded on laying a proper foundation in doing so. The students are not permitted to use anything outside the submitted materials so that each student is on the same playing field. At the conclusion of the bench trial, the judge makes two decisions – one on the merits of the case based upon substantive law and the other on the point calculation of each attorney and witness. “It is very beneficial to perform a real court case while learning about law and speaking skills,” said Junior Alyssa Reese. “Also having the privilege to work with a great team, Ms. Pignato, and Judge Sciortino is an unforgettable experience in itself!”

Alicia Fink receives Lifespan’s “Second Half Heroes Award” Brockport resident Alicia Fink is one of five winners chosen for Lifespan’s Second Half Heroes Award. The winners were honored at Lifespan’s “Celebration of Aging” luncheon on March 25 in Rochester’s Riverside Convention Center, attended by a record crowd of 1,470 guests. The keynote speaker for the event was Joan Lunden, host of the “Good Morning America” show on ABC for two decades. The Second Half Heroes Award recognizes adults 60 and older who break the stereotypes of aging. The award literature states, “Nominees need a ‘take it on’ attitude about the second half of life.” One of over 40 nominees, Fink’s qualifications included her hands-on support for a school in her birth place Ecuador; searching out and publishing

the unknown women poets in Ecuador; starting her own jewelry design business; and leading the Western Monroe Historical Society for four years as the current president. Her story appeared in the March 1, 2015 Suburban News, Hamlin-Clarkson Herald entitled “Meet Alicia Fink: leader, educator, and artist serving locally and in her birthplace Ecuador” (www.westsidenewsny.com, click on “Features,” go to second page). Lifespan of Greater Rochester, Inc., founded in 1971, provides more than 30 services and employs 115 at several locations to help older adults take on both the challenges and opportunities of longer life.

HELPING WITH GRIEF

It is generally accepted that mind-body practices such as yoga can help reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, and negative mood. With this in mind, attention is now focused on whether such mind-body practices might help grieving individuals overcome the loss of a loved one. While grief used to be largely regarded as a psychological experience, there is emerging opinion that grief is more of a complex condition that involves interplay between the body and the mind. As such, it might respond to exercise that improves awareness, increases sleeping ability, improves appetite, and promotes relaxation. There is no single way to cope

with grief, and mind-body exercise may be one of many ways to address and accept loss. Some grief experts note that there could be a connection between physical exertion and the reduction of anger associated with the grieving process. Because anger is one of the five stages of grieving, exercise could be one tool to use in helping us navigate that stage in a healthy way. For more information about the funeral services we offer, please call THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME at 585-392-7100. Located at 735 East Avenue, we are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Brockport Service Clubs hold annual “Bell Ringing” Dinner The annual March appreciation banquet of Brockport Kiwanis, Lions and Rotary is where the clubs find out who is the victor in the annual contest to raise money during the Salvation Army’s Holiday fundraiser. This year the Brockport Lions won with an astounding $2,500 - plus effort. In total, over $15,000 was raised with about half of that due to the service clubs’ bell ringing efforts on the four Saturdays prior to Christmas at Mahan’s Liquor Store and the Brockport Walmart. Thanks to the holiday fundraiser, in the past five months alone, the Salvation Army provided aid to 500 people from the Brockport

area including distribution of 100 food vouchers and winter coats for 13 children. Ninety per cent of the monies collected locally are available for help within the community. Most of the rest goes for larger project support like shelters. Salvation Army Major Douglas Hart commended local club efforts and the community’s generosity, presenting certificates of achievement to club representatives. Major Hart lived for nine years in the Kendall area graduating from Kendall CSD. Provided information

Filmmaker and 1950s Civil Rights activitist part of Brockport High School’s Peace Day The student- led Keep the Peace Committee at Brockport High School planned a week of activities culminating in a keynote address by filmmaker Julia Clifford and Ayanna Najuma. Clifford is the director of the independent documentary film “Children of the Civil Rights,” which chronicles the civil rights movement in Oklahoma City. In 1958, a yearand-a-half before the Greensboro, North Carolina sit-ins and six years before the Civil Rights Act became law, a group of black children set out to accomplish the impossible: Desegregate Oklahoma City. No one knew Oklahoma City kids were heroes, not even the kids themselves. Fifty years later, “Children of the Civil Rights” shares their odyssey to freedom. It never got violent. It never made

national news. But, together, these children desegregated every restaurant in the city except one. Joining her was a special guest Ayanna Najuma, one of the original participants in the sit-ins. Now 64, Najuma was just seven years old at the time. Clifford was inspired to make this film when she discovered her father, as a young white college student, had participated in the Oklahoma City sit-ins. Local grower to focus on wholesale fruit markets

Brown’s Berry Patch owners looking to simplify business by Kristina Gabalski

5319 Ridge Rd. West • Spencerport • (585) 352-1920 americanaccentsfurniturestore.com

Weekdays 10-5; Sat. 10-5; Sun. Open House 12-2; Closed Wed.

The upcoming local fruit season won’t be the same for many families who have made Brown’s Berry Patch a pick-your-own destination for 35 years - owners Bob and Deborah Brown have decided to retire and are closing their retail and pick-your-own business. “We’re looking to simplify,” Bob Brown tells the Suburban News and Hamlin-Clarkson Herald, “to go back to what my grandfather and dad did.” The Brown family has been growing fruit near the Lake Ontario shoreline north of Albion for more than two centuries and Brown says the farm operation itself will continue to grow. His brother, Eric, and son, Bobby, will be in charge of growing apples, cherries, peaches and berries. “The wholesale part of the farm will be going on as it has in the past - you can look for our berries in chain stores and farm markets,” Brown says. Brown’s Berry Patch has been a popular destination -

in 2004 it received the I Love New York Governor’s AgriTourism Award. The decision to bring an end to the popular wagon rides, ice-cream, retail and fruit/pumpkin you-pick side of the farm didn’t come easily, and Brown says there had always been hope that there would be someone ready at the helm to take over when he and his wife were ready to retire, but it just didn’t happen. “Our daughter is in Washington, DC, and engaged to be married and our son is interested in the farm, but not interested in retail ... my brother’s boys are too young,” Brown explains. “It’s hard to find people who want to do this for a living.” He notes that running the retail operation could be a grind and that he is ready to go back to being a farmer. “There are certain things year after year that never seem to get done on the personal and home front,” he observes. Brown says his customers and employees have been great and adds that he has been touched by the many customers who have thanked him for decades of happy memories. “That’s the hardest part,” Brown says about the decision to retire, “It rips a little piece of your heart out.”

BUM Players to present annual comedy The local community-theater group, the BUM Players, are putting the finishing touches on their 19th annual dessert-theater comedy. This year they present an offering by little known playwright, Ed Simpson, entitled “A Point of Order,” a comedy presented in two acts with permission from Samuel French Inc. The play will be performed in the Brockport United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, where both rehearsals and stage construction are well under way, on April 17, 18, 24 and 25 at 7:30 each night. Desserts and beverages will be available during intermission and included in the cost of the tickets. The play will be directed by longtime BUM Player, David Hansen, who has been involved with local community theater for several decades. He will be ably assisted by John “Mack” McCarthy. Hansen will also be acting as technical director, as well. Tickets are available in the church office from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday, or at the door the nights of the performances. Tickets may also be reserved by phoning the Church Office at 637-4240 or by calling 261-7381. Tickets are $8 general admission; $6 seniors (age 65+); and $17 per one-family household.
