Friends of Seymour Library support wide-ranging library needs By Doug Hickerson In visits to Seymour Library in Brockport, my striking impression is that, of all our local events or institutions, this must be the most concentrated gathering of a crosssection of our community, all enjoying a wide variety of educational and entertaining pursuits. I see a steady stream of diverse people in great numbers when I enter or leave, around 400 daily recorded, and more during summer programs. They are adults of all ages, teens, and parents or grandparents with kids in tow. Wandering the library’s many sections on any day, I may come upon kids’ structured activities such as crafts, Legos, and electronic gadgets. Teens and adult activities are also abundant. Behind this delightful display of wholesome happenings are the Friends of Seymour Library. They are a group of volunteers who raise funds for library materials, services, staff development, equipment and programs. Some of the programs include Children and Teen Book Festivals, Children’s Summer Reading Program, Teens’ Summer Programs, and Adult Reading Programs, to name only a few. Friends and their work The Friends group consists of anyone who contributes as little as $10 a year to be a member, now numbering about 100. The amount of direct involvement is up to the individual. Many are involved in fundraising such as the membership drive, the twice-yearly used book sales and the yearly fabric sales. Some help out with the many library programs. In the Friends’ monthly meetings, Director Carl Gouveia’s contribution includes updates on library activity and where funds are most needed. Officers of the Friends have deep roots in the organization and they all affirm Seymour Library’s great value to the community. Past President Charlotte Wright – Behind organizational foundation and growth Charlotte “Char” Wright served as president of Friends for 16 years, starting in 2000. Under her long tenure, the Friends organization evolved to what it is today. Her name is always spoken with respect, including from the current president, Lynne Gardner: “I am very proud of the Friends, and I give credit to Charlotte who laid the foundation over her administration.” Several directors came and left Seymour Library during Wright’s term in office. One thing she established early on was the inclusion of the director in Friends meetings “so we would work as a team,” she said. Friends became more active, moving beyond sorting magazines and washing books, she reflects. Funds originally supported summer programs, but expanded to causes like reading incentives for adults, plus staff development and staff appreciation events. The yearly book sale went to twice a year and the annual fabric sale began. And, reorganization and revised by-laws occurred in 2015 with staggered terms for officers. Wright said Friends had been supporting children’s programs, led by librarian Natalie Burch, and teen’s programs for years. The teens programs had thrived under Chris Daily who retired in 2017 after 26 years of service. Carl Gouveia became the library’s director

He hired a librarian, Abby DeVuyst, who created the first adult programs, now receiving Friends’ support, too. He also hired a teen librarian, Stephanie Blando. Wright noted that all three librarians have degrees in library science. Wright reflected on today’s Seymour Library. “It’s a wonderful place with great programs for our youth and adults. The staff is friendly and helpful, including some trained in computer technology who are available to help those using our many computers,” she said. President Lynne Gardner – Sees fundraisers as added benefit for the community Lynne Gardner has been president of the group for two years. A Brockport resident for 30 years, she started bringing her kids to the original library site in the Seymour mansion. Now serving about 15 years with the Friends, she joined because, “We spent a lot of time in the library and I decided I wanted to give back to this wonderful place.” She sees a wider benefit to raising funds in the book sales. Beyond the money raised, “I love the whole idea of passing on books already read to somebody who has not read them,” she said. “It encourages reading and is a community event. People look forward to it twice a year.” She also
likes the recycling of fabric and yarn in the annual fabric sale. After the sale, left-overs get good use by being offered free to organizations making Dresses for Girls Around the World, knit caps for babies, lap rugs for vets, and comforters for the homeless.

Carl Gouveia, President of the Brockport Kiwanis Club, gives the George Mann Key Club Scholarship to Brockport High School graduate Lindsay Allen, who is a member of Key Club – a school club sponsored by the Brockport Kiwanis Club that promotes volunteerism in high schoolers. This year under the supervision of the Key Club Advisor, Christine Howlett, the club had 19 seniors who were eligible to wear the navy blue Key Club cords at graduation. In order to earn these cords the students needed to complete 15 hours of community service this year or 50 hours of service over four years. Kayla Saladyga receives Girl Scouts 2018 Gold Award Girl Scouts of Western New York is proud to announce Kayla Saladyga of Spencerport, as a 2018 Gold Award Girl Scout. Saladyga’s project was titled “STEM Summer Lessons.” Saladyga explained, “My Gold Award involved my local FIRST FTC Robotics team within my hometown of Spencerport. Robotics has been a large part of my life, as I’ve spent one year on the younger FTC team (which was actually set up by a former Girl Scout for her Gold Award), and three years on the older FRC. Robotics has become a large part of my life, as I’ve taken many experiences from it, and learned a lot from my mentors. It is also a large reason for why I wish to go into engineering. With this, I wanted to give back to the team, and look for a way to support the younger students coming up onto the FTC Team. In order to help give them a chance to learn some of the skills that would be needed on both the FTC and FRC teams, I created a series of PowerPoints involving the different aspects of the robotics teams and how the team runs. I also presented these PowerPoints to the students during the weekly summer meetings of the team in order to help the students gain the information. As a student mentor on the team, I

also got the chance to create a PowerPoint that involved some of the information on the newer components in the game, and presented to a group of about 100 people from various other FTC teams within the area for the day of the FTC Kickoff.” Saladyga added, “Girl Scouts has given me many things in life. It’s allowed me to make close friends and good memories with them: hours of meetings playing with one another, learning new things, and discovering how to help others has given me a sense of closeness with each of my troop’s members. Girl Scouts has given me many chances to work with others that I may have never met before, as well as give back to my community and those within it. Girl Scouts helps to provide many opportunities to give back to those in need and connects with many volunteer operations to connect with all different walks of life. I am grateful for all the different opportunities that I have gained in Girl Scouts, and plan to carry my experiences into the real world, as well continue to help others.” Saladyga received her Gold Award at the Gold Award Ceremony on June 2. left unlocked and gone through. As the Brockport Police continues to investigate and catch the perpetrators, we want to remind everyone the importance of locking your vehicles. It may be helpful to leave a note on the bathroom mirror or in a place where you will always look reminding yourself to lock your vehicle. There is an ever present feeling that we will never be a victim of such a crime, until it happens. Don’t let yourself become complacent and remember to lock all your belongings up before you go to bed, or before you leave for work. These types of crimes happen at all hours of the day and we all need to be ready for when the prowler comes lurking for your prized possessions. If you happen to see anyone acting suspicious or going to cars on your street, please don’t hesitate to call 911 so that the suspect can be taken into custody.

Genesee County Master Gardeners announce their monthly garden series, “Garden Talk.” Taught by Master Gardeners, programs will be held from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month. Bring your lunch to the CCE office at 420 East Main Street, Batavia and join the group. This free series is open to the public. Registration is not required. On August 7 - “Autumn Awesomeness.” Fall is a great time to garden after so many of summer’s challenges are past. Late interest plants are important, but there’s more, and that “more” will make your garden sing year round. September 4 - “Tips on Ticks.” Find out which ticks you may find in your backyard or farther afield. Learn how to identify a tick, what diseases they may carry and how to protect yourself and your family from being bitten by a tick.
October 2 - “A Witches Garden.” Witches were once considered wise women and healers. They used plants they grew or found in their environment to cure ills as well as cast spells. Explore the folklore and plants of the witch. November 6 will conclude the “Garden Talk” year with a demonstration on how to make an outdoor greens display for the winter. Get ideas for creating a container that can take you past the holidays and look good all winter. The Hilton School District will welcome Jeffrey Michael Green, Ed.D. as Hilton High School principal on August 27. He replaces Brian Bartalo, who accepted the position of superintendent for the Holley Central School District. Green has served as principal of Odyssey Academy (grades 6-12) in the Greece Central School District since 2015. Prior to that, he was assistant principal at Athena High School, also in Greece, and associate superintendent for the Diocese of Rochester. Green began his career teaching and serving as an instructional coach in the Rochester City School District. Green’s education includes a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Ithaca College, a master’s in business and marketing education from Nazareth College, a Certificate of Advanced Study in school building and district leadership, and a doctoral degree in teaching and curriculum from the University of Rochester Warner School. Green’s entry plan includes becoming deeply involved in the Hilton community, developing trusting relationships focused on student success with stakeholders and groups, and bringing out the best in his staff while aligning goals to the district’s strategic plan.

Friends of Seymour Library support wide-ranging library needs Continued from front page Vice President Dan Burns – Sees increased cooperation among three support groups Dan Burns estimates he has been a member of Friends for 20 years, now in his second year as vice president. He sums up the value of Seymour Library as a “community center with a relatively new and very well-done regional history section (Local History Room).” He cites offerings like books, periodicals, the internet, research programs, but emphasizes “programs for all ages, including young people and teenagers which have developed so much in the last several years.” He sees Friends as “very active in fund raising to support all the increased programs, including in the community, like prizes for essays, research papers and Project Graduation at Brockport High School.” Burns sees increasing cooperation among the groups supporting the library: Friends, the Library Board, and the relatively new Foundation. “All three are working toward the same goals.” Treasurer John Hamling – Feels libraries must “rebrand” for this generation John Hamling is the only officer of Friends who is not retired. And, since 1992, he has served a record 26 years as treasurer. He is a financial advisor at Karpus Investment Management in Pittsford. (Missing from the May 21 Friends meeting photo). Hamling describes Seymour Library as “a multi-purpose gathering place,” and an example why public libraries should “rebrand, John Hamling or pitch a little differently, because a lot of folks think libraries are a dying breed as bricks and mortar,” he said. “It’s not just about borrowing books. Books have become secondary in some cases, because the generation behind us (I am 65) is not going to the library for the same reasons we did.” He said we are fortunate at Seymour Library to have the teen and adult groups with “attractive things to do” and access to electronic books, videos, and games that are the popular media. “Our teen group is highly regarded throughout Monroe County,” Hamling said. “It’s very popular and successful. Other libraries ask what we do differently with teens. Chris Daily built the program with the help of many; she made it happen. And, leadership is seamless with Stephanie Blando as the new teen librarian.” Secretary Carolyn Mundy – Sees the library as “The hub of the community where all kinds of things happen” Frequenting the library for many years, Carolyn Mundy joined the Friends in 2012. She has been the secretary since 2015. “Libraries are the hub of the community where all kinds of things happen,” Mundy said. She sees the importance as a social gathering place for some, plus the book sales providing affordable books. “There are programs for children, teens and adults, as well as family nights, movies, and games.” She likes doing hands-on work in most of the Friends projects like the Christmas brunch for the staff.
“It’s nice to interact with the staff and get to know them.” She works at the book and fabric sales, does the membership mailing, and provides membership information at the sidewalk sale and arts festival in Brockport. Friends of Seymour Library – State-affiliated and interacting with county groups Friends of Seymour Library is one of 16 groups in Monroe County called the “MCLS Friends Council.” The Council is part of the New York Library Association Friends of Libraries Section. The groups meet twice a year, taking turns hosting the meeting and sharing their current activities, fund-raisers, and other membership initiatives. The meeting this year was on April 24 at Seymour Library, attended by 10 of the groups, with almost 40 people present in the Duryea Room round-table discussion. “The Friends of Seymour Library and the library’s Foundation are doing great work and a goal was to showcase some of their projects for the other Friends groups,” said Lisa C. Wemett, the council’s secretary and first vice president. Participants first had a tour of the library guided by Director Carl Gouveia. After the sharing session, a sampling of members gave their impressions of Seymour Library: “Lovely library with welcoming, pleasant, comfortable space for each age group. Your new ideas sound exciting.” Pam Birch, Pittsford Friends “A very impressive mid-sized library. Children’s area is very well done. But, I was really impressed with the new Local History Room. Award-winning Westside Challenger Tennis announces 2018 fall session
Master Plan Progress at the Seneca Park Zoo A favorite activity for my family and I is exploring the Seneca Park Zoo, especially in the summer months! In Monroe County, we are lucky to have outstanding quality of life services that we can enjoy with our families and friends. The Seneca Park Zoo is a fun, inviting place to teach our kids about animals, the environment, and the importance of conservation. As some of you may know, the Seneca Park Zoo is undergoing some major renovations that will improve the quality of life for its animals and make the overall zoo experience much more exciting and enjoyable for visitors. Back in July, the Zoo broke ground on the first phase of the Seneca Park Zoo Master Plan. This first phase is a $60 million expansion that will take about five years to complete. We are already seeing major changes to our zoo, including the opening of the brand new Cold Asia Exhibit. This exhibit is the home to the Zoo’s newest family members: Red Pandas! Our two Red Pandas, Blaze and Starlight, arrived from the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute. The exhibit is also home to the Zoo’s two existing snow leopards, Kaba and Timila. The Seneca Park Zoo will soon be home to the Masai giraffe after the completion of a 4.5 acre expansion of the Zoo. Visitors will not only be able to see these giraffes in the Zoo’s brand new “A Step into Africa” Exhibit, but will also be able to feed the giraffes year round! I can’t wait to see the completion of this exhibit at the end of the summer. I know my family and I are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to have such a unique and interactive experience. If you’re looking for a fun and informative summer activity to share with your children, the Zoo’s gates are open every day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. I can’t wait to see the Zoo’s master plan progress over the next few years. Phase 1 is supporting nearly 200 construction jobs while also providing a great opportunity to encourage future tourism to Monroe County. As a member of the Legislature, I am proud to continue to approve funding for this project and other quality of life services through our Capital Improvement Program and Capital Budget. Healthcare an important issue in midterm elections One of the most important issues in the midterm elections will be the idea that this president is intent on dismantling Affordable Care Act (ACA or Obamacare). Chris Collins voted to repeal and replace ACA (news letter 5/4/17). Mr. Collins also admitted he did not read the bill as he was busy with other meetings. My question is how are you able to vote on such an important bill without, reading a bill yourself, and speaking with constituents in your state? Most of us have heard that the U.S. spends about 20 percent of gross national product on healthcare. Yet our healthcare has been expensive, inefficient, and confusing. Our healthcare system was, and in some ways still is, a profit driven system. The passing of the ACA was a start for the U.S. for decent healthcare for everyone. It was a start toward government responsibility. The ACA created important rules and incentives to push our “greedy” healthcare system to better serve patients and families. How? The ACA was able to stop insurance companies from denying people with preexisting conditions. The ACA capped out of pocket spending per person to about $6,000. This was done so people would not go bankrupt. The ACA defined a list of essential benefits that every insurance company cover and pushed preventive care. The ACA was unable to include other ideas such as being able to negotiate for lower drugprices due to powerful lobbying from big PHARMA. Politicians would like us to believe that we don’t want “socialized medicine” like other countries. Every other developed country in the world has healthcare for less than what we pay for in U.S. Most other countries use a unique hybrid system of government intervention and free market system. We as citizens need to be informed and look at what Mr. Collins wants to do with his healthcare vote. He voted to dismantle the ACA. To replace it with what? At their annual conference, the United States Tennis Association recognized Westside Challenger Tennis as the most outstanding program in the category, “Service to People with Disabilities.” Once again, Westside Challenger Tennis will provide a Fall Program for K-12 students with special needs. Although this program is designed to ensure that students with special needs receive excellent instruction from specially trained professionals, tailored to their individual skill level, the program is integrated and all players are welcome. This program is based on the United States Tennis Association motto that “people of all ages and abilities should have an opportunity to participate in the game of tennis.” The Fall session dates are September 8, 15, 22 and 29 from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. and will take place at the Brockport Central School District tennis courts or gym facilities. Participants should plan to attend all dates. Students with special needs will be given enrollment priority. Equipment and refreshments will be provided at no cost. This program has a limited enrollment of 20 participants accepted on a first come first served basis. Those interested are encouraged to obtain registration forms as soon as possible. Fine Art Miracles at Westwood Commons Caroline Garnaat is making art approachable to all ages and abilities. An artist for 40 years and teacher with the nonprofit organization Fine Art Miracles, Inc., Caroline helps residents at Westwood Commons, a DePaul Senior Living Community in North Chili, channel their inner Picasso once a month. Caroline said completing an art project gives residents a sense of accomplishment. “The knack is trying to determine where people are in terms of their abilities and to find a project that will challenge the more experienced people and give confidence to the less experienced.” The mission of Fine Arts Miracles, Inc. (FAM) is to bring the cognitive and social benefits of art to the elderly living in nursing homes and assisted living facilities through fine art lessons, art therapy, music therapy and social robot-enhanced learning for all ages and capabilities.
According to Fine Arts Miracles CEO Tess Lojacono, studies show that people may express their feelings through colors, images and artistic impressions. “Verbal skills often fail the elderly over time,” she explains. “Researchers believe art therapy can help people express themselves when this happens. Drawings, paintings, collages and simple sculpture offer a visual-art dialogue.” Participation in art class stimulates the temporal lobe of the brain and can induce the use of motor skills. “I really love working with the seniors because they’re very interested in learning,” said Caroline. “Most of them are still very capable even if they may have physical limitations. St. Paul Lutheran School and Church receives Youth Sports Grant St. Paul Lutheran School and Church in Hilton has received a $24,097 grant from the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Legacy Fund for Youth Sports at Rochester Area Community Foundation. This grant was one of the first 20 grants from the fund, established at the Community Foundation with a $5 million gift from the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation. Grants from this fund, which will be awarded annually, fulfill the vision of the late founder and owner of the Buffalo Bills football team to create, expand and improve youth sports and recreation programs in his adopted hometown that includes the greater Rochester region. St. Paul will partner with Hilton-Parma and Hamlin recreation departments to provide a number of youth sport and recreation
opportunities in the future. The grant helps to cover costs of equipment and supplies needed for such programming. Local businesses looking for inexpensive ways to help their workers upgrade skills are also encouraged to send employees to the August 14 session. A federal workforce development grant covers full tuition for those who meet eligibility requirements, which will be covered at the session. Registration is required. Thomas Walter earns rank of Eagle Scout; troop celebrates Spring Court of Awards Boy Scout Troop 90 is pleased to announce that Thomas Walter has earned the highest rank of Boy Scouts, Eagle Scout. Thomas’s project was the construction and installation of a picnic table and a 189 sq. ft. paverstone walkway, and the clearing of a 250 ft. stretch of overgrown brush surrounding a pond. The project was located at senior care facility, Brookdale Brighton. This project restored the beauty of the pond and created a relaxation area for the community. Thomas earned a total of 26 Merit Badges from 2013 to 2017 as part of his requirement to become an Eagle Scout. A sample of some of the badges he earned were: Citizenship in the Community, Fish and Wildlife, First Aid, Personal Fitness, Wilderness Survival, Camping, Lifesaving, Sports, and Orienteering. A minimum of 21 Merit Badges is required for any Eagle Scout. Thomas was joined by his parents, familiy and friends at the ceremony held at the First Baptist Church of Chili and followed with a celebratory reception. “We are so proud of our troop and the leadership these young men provide through eagle scout projects that help our local religious institutions, schools and community,” said Bernie Fingar, Scout Master. “We look to advance as many scouts as we can to the rank of Eagle and are always pleased with the creativity, thought and effort that go into the projects especially since fewer than five percent of Boy Scouts nationwide attain this illustrious rank.” Troop 90 also celebrated their Spring Court of Awards honoring nine scouts who advanced in rank and all scouts who earned Merit Badges. Colin Guilfoyle, Adam Root and Graham Wohlers joined the troop at the Rank of Scout; Joshua Smith advanced to Tenderfoot; Tim Dewey, Casey

VILLAGE OF BROCKPORT, NEW YORK The Village of Brockport seeks qualified individual for Building Inspector / Code Enforcement Officer. This position is full time 40 hours per week including occasional evening meetings of the Village Board, Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, Code Review Committee, and Housing Task Force. This position is Civil Service competitive: title Building Inspector. The applicant must be reachable on the “Certification of Eligibles” list for Monroe County. The Village can hire an eligible lateral transfer applicant. Must possess current New York State Basic Code Enforcement Training Certificate indicating completion of the New York State Basic Code Enforcement Training Program. Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Excel and Word) is necessary. Knowledge of the Integrated Property System, also known as IPS, is not required but is desirable. The position is assisted by a full-time Clerk and a part-time Building Inspector/Code Enforcement Officer. The Village of Brockport has a population of ~8,300, with ~1,769 parcels, covering 2.2 square miles, in the County of Monroe, New York. Brockport is home of SUNY Brockport with ~8,200 students. Brockport has a high percentage of rentals interspersed among single family owner-occupied homes, commercial properties and a modest amount of new construction. Genesee Transportation Council to hold Planning Committee meeting The Genesee Transportation Council (GTC), the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the Genesee-Finger Lakes Region, will be holding one of its regularly scheduled Planning Committee meetings on Thursday, August 9, at 10 a.m. at the Wayne County Courthouse, located at 26 Church Street in Lyons. The Planning Committee provides professional and technical direction to the GTC Board. It is comprised of transportation and planning technical professionals who have been appointed by GTC Board members. Following input from various other committees, the Planning Committee reviews and recommends action on activities and work products that are then considered for final approval by the GTC Board. Each Planning Committee meeting is open to the public. A public forum is included at the beginning and the end of
all meetings to allow for public comment on meeting agenda items before and after recommendation to the GTC Board is made or action is taken. The United States Department of Transportation requires every metropolitan area with a population over 50,000 to have a designated MPO to qualify for receipt of federal highway and transit funds. GTC is the MPO for the nine-county region, which includes Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Wayne, Wyoming, and Yates counties. Monroe County Executive Dinolfo tapped for National County Post Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo has been appointed to sit on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Counties (NACo), which serves America’s 3,069 county governments with the mission of achieving healthy, vibrant and safe counties across the nation. County Executive Dinolfo was appointed by California County Supervisor Greg Cox, who was sworn in as president of NACo at NACo’s 83rd Annual Conference on July 16. Sweden water study meeting scheduled for August 7 The Town of Sweden will host the presentation of a public water expansion study recently completed by MRB Group on Tuesday, August 7 at 7 p.m. at the Sweden Town Hall, 18 State Street. Joining MRB in the presentation will be a representative from the Monroe County Water Authority and Jay Grasso, a consultant who completed a median income study of the town earlier in the year.
The goal of the studies is to pursue funding opportunities for the expansion of public water in largely rural areas of the town. Residents who are interested in public water expansion are encouraged to attend the meeting. A video taping of the meeting will be available on the town’s website later in the week. Preservation League wants to save Tug Urger and other Erie Canal resources The Preservation League of New York State is seeking support for its efforts to protect the historic Tug Urger and other Erie Canal vessels that provide an authentic link to the past. The League recently learned that the New York State Canal Corporation, under the New York Power Authority (NYPA), has plans to beach the tugboat Urger, flagship of the Erie Canal and beloved “teaching tug.” This vessel has introduced thousands of school children and members of the public to New York’s navigable waterways, reinforcing the role of the Erie Canal in making New York the Empire State. Tug Urger used to travel up and down the canal system for school field trips and public events. Now the Canal Corporation and NYPA want to pull it from the water and make it a dry-land exhibit at a NYS Visitor Center off the Thruway in Montgomery County. NYPA’s plans would permanently disable the Urger and prevent it from returning to service. The League is launching an advocacy campaign to call attention to the plight of the Urger and to call on the Canal Corporation and New York Power Authority to work with stakeholders to develop a plan for the fleet of historic canal vessels, more than a dozen of which are slated to be scuttled off Long Island to create artificial reefs for sport fishing and recreational diving. According to Jay DiLorenzo, president of the Preservation League, “The Erie Canal is an engine for recreation and tourism with significant economic benefits for canal communities, businesses, and New York State. The Preservation League has been working for years to help communities in the Erie Canal Corridor address their unique preservation challenges and revitalize canalside assets.” Through more than $600,000 in grants, technical servic-

Loans from the Endangered Properties Intervention Program (EPIP) have added more than $300,000 in support. “As we mark the 100th anniversary of the Barge Canal, it seems like a remarkably poor time to remove historic resources from the National Historic Landmark NYS Canal System,” continued DiLorenzo. “It’s hard to imagine the future of the canal system without Tug Urger and other significant historic vessels on the water. These vessels convey the sense of New York State pride, stewardship, and heritage that are integral to a thriving, living waterway,” said Bob Radliff, Executive Director of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor. According to Dan Wiles, president of the Board of Directors of the Canal Society of New York State, “The 1901 Urger already had a storied career even before plying Barge Canal waters in the 1920s, serving as a fishing boat on Lake Michigan. As one of the State’s maintenance workhorses, its presence overlaps nearly all of the years of the Barge Canal, now celebrating its centennial. It has been appreciated by generations across these many years and across New York State. It is one of the essential links between that past and the future. We all need it to continue this mission on the waterway, being shared by communities throughout the canal corridor.” In addition to the effort to save the Urger, the League is also calling on the Canal Corporation and New York Power Authority to work with stakeholders to develop a plan for the remainder of the fleet of historic canal vessels, which currently numbers 57. August events at the Spencerport Depot August will be a busy month at the Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum. All month, the museum will be featuring a historic lenticular photo of Main Street in Rochester. This object is on loan from the NY Museum of Transportation. The museum will also be hosting several events: On August 7 from 6 to 7:30 p.m., The Genesee Valley Arts Council will be at the museum running an Arts Grants seminar. The 4th Annual Spencerport Heritage Day will be on Saturday, August 18 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring jazz
music from the Hot Club of Buffalo (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and Bearcat and the Birds (2 to 4 p.m). There will also be activities and demonstrations for people including a Spencerport FD Fire Truck (1 to 2 p.m). The museum along with the Village of Spencerport are hosting the Corning Museum of Glass’ GlassBarge and the 1862 Barge Replica, the Lois McClure on Wednesday, August 22 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tickets for the GlassBarge are all reserved but shore side viewing is available.
