Brockport Blue Devils win hockey sectional by Warren Kozireski Brockport scored twice in the first period and added two more late in the third to defeat Webster-Thomas 4-1 to win the Section V Class B championship. After the Blue Devils couldn’t score on an extended first period power play that included 14 seconds on fiveon-three, they took a 1-0 lead on a perfect give-and-go with captain Alec Rockow converting a return pass from Patrick Viscardi at 7:31. The Titans threatened later in the period as Brockport goaltender Liam Schreiner lost his stick for 45 seconds, but a good stick check by Walden Grady knocked the puck away. Minutes later the Blue Devils made it 2-0 as Peyton Young forced an offensive zone turnover by the Thomas defense and scored an unassisted goal at 13:44. The Titans scored on a redirection about five minutes into the second period to close to within 2-1 before both teams played the rest of the second and much of the third period with more tight-checking, less risky approaches. Thomas started to pressure the Brockport net, but Schreiner made three wonderful saves in a quick sequence with less than three minutes remaining in regulation. After a Brockport dump-in, the Titans goaltender tried to pass the puck, but Young intercepted and found Maison Fadale who redirected it into the net for a 3-1 Blue Devil advantage at 13:02. Forty-nine seconds later with Brockport shorthanded, it was Fadale creating yet another turnover at the blueline. He backhanded it under the crossbar to ice the Blue Devils 4-1 victory. “So excited; such a sigh of relief that we finally got it done and I couldn’t be more proud of everyone on the team,” Most Valuable Player Fadale said. “It was a little nerve-wracking at 2-1 with five minutes left, but luckily I got the third goal and capped it off with the fourth goal; it’s a nice feeling.”
“I thought we didn’t finish early…to make it 3-1, so I was getting a little nervous that maybe we didn’t capitalize,” Brockport head coach Greg Stahl said. “We’ve been beating a lot of teams early - getting way ahead of them - so that was probably the tightest third period we’ve been in. “We saw on video that they were throwing the puck up the middle. We tried to keep a guy up top and we also kept a guy down low for when we got the turnover and it worked a lot.”
“This is honestly the best feeling I’ve probably had in my entire life,” Schreiner, who finished with 26 saves, said. “It’s truly special especially to share it with such amazing teammates.” Rockow was named the Offensive Player of the Game. The Blue Devils, ranked fourth in Division II in the latest New York State Sportswriters rankings, advance to the regional round of the state tournament against West Seneca East of Section VI.
Local county fairs deciding how to spend state improvement funds by Kristina Gabalski Earlier this year, Governor Cuomo announced the awarding of $5 million to county and youth fairs across the state through the Agricultural Fairgrounds Infrastructure Improvement Program. Fifty-six local fairs can receive more than $89,000 each through the program to help with the cost of improvement and renovation projects including new construction. This is the first time in nearly a decade that the state’s more than four dozen local fairs will receive critical infrastructure improvement funds, the Governor’s office said. The Monroe County Fair & Recreation Association has not yet decided how they will use the funds, says Eileen Voak. Voak works in the Fair & Recreation Association office and explains that the search is underway to find a new location for the fair, which has been held most recently at Northampton Park. “The new location for the fair has not been decided yet,” Voak says. She explains that the Fair Association is currently considering a couple of potential sites. The dates of the 2017 fair have been tentatively set for July 28 through 30, about one week earlier than usual. Because the new location has not been chosen, Voak says no decision has been made about how to utilize the
funds from the Infrastructure Improvement Program. Once a site has been chosen, the decision will likely be made, she adds. Similarly in Genesee County, members of the Genesee County Agricultural Society, Inc. have made no decision on how to spend the funds. “We are coming up with ideas and seeing what (the program) will allow us to do,” Agricultural Society President Scott Adams says. “We are looking forward to deciding on the best usage of the money.” The Agricultural Society had their next meeting planned for March 1, Adams says. The Genesee County Fair will be held July 17 through 22, at the fairgrounds on Route 5 (5056 East Main Road) in Batavia. In Orleans County, 4-H educator Robert Batt says the Orleans County 4-H Fair expects to receive $96,000 in funds through the program, most of which will be used to upgrade a performance stage at the Curtis Pavilion. Currently, a temporary stage is set up each year with a large tent for performances, competitions and concerts, but constructing a new performance stage at the Curtis Pavilion would save the $2,000 Orleans County Cornell Cooperative Extension spends each year on the temporary set up, Batt says. During the 4-H Fair in July, the new stage would be used for dance competitions, bands and additional activities
and could serve as an outdoor classroom for the Master Gardener program and agricultural specialists at other times, Batt says. The new stage proposed for the pavilion would be 40-feet wide by 30-feet deep, he says. “The completion of the new stage project would turn the Curtis Pavilion into a better resource for the county,” Batt explains. “Our hope is that it can serve as a venue for performances throughout the spring, summer and fall as well as allowing our own program to utilize the area as an outdoor classroom.” Additionally, private dressing rooms attached to the stage will, “Help solve a longstanding problem of not having a private place for participants in the talent show or the local talent showcase to change into costumes or prepare equipment,” Batt says. The Orleans County 4-H Fair will take place July 24 through 29, at the Orleans County 4-H Fairgrounds, Route 31 Knowlesville, just west of Albion. State Agriculture Commissioner Richard Ball says many of the state’s local fairs have been struggling for years to make necessary improvements to stay up-to-date and attractive to visitors. “This funding will help mitigate those challenges and provide better opportunities to spotlight the state’s diverse and exceptional agricultural community,” Ball says.

Scholarship available through Greater Churchville-Riga Chamber of Commerce The Greater Churchville-Riga Chamber of Commerce has announced that it will once again award a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating high school senior residing in the Town of Riga who plans to continue his or her education beyond high school with a primary focus in business. Candidates will be judged on financial need, scholastic achievement, character, leadership and motivation. Requirements include: the student must reside in the Town of Riga; they must have been accepted into a school of higher education with a primary focus in business; they must submit the application cover page, letter of application and a copy of their transcript through January 31, 2017 on or before the application deadline; if requested,
they must participate in an interview with the Greater Churchville-Riga Chamber of Commerce scholarship committee. The scholarship will be paid upon evidence of satisfactory completion of the first semester’s work with a cumulative grade point average of 2.4 or better at a school of higher education beyond high school, with the assurance of registration for a second semester. Run, walk, race for melanoma awareness Online registration is now open for the 12th annual Daniel’s Race, a 5K run/walk at ChurchvilleChili Middle School on Saturday, April 8. The race is in memory of Daniel Myslivecek, who lost his two plus year battle with Stage IV Metastatic Melanoma. Each year race proceeds are donated to an organization that helps children with life-threatening illnesses while raising melanoma awareness. This year the campaign will wrap up a $25,000 pledge to sponsor an alcove where doctors/nurses interact with families of patients in the new Golisano Children’s Hospital and help grant a local child’s dream through Make-A-Wish Western New York. Opioids - The Drug Next Door Second of a four part series on the opioid epidemic affecting Western Monroe County by Tami Raco Our nation is in the midst of an unprecedented opioid epidemic and the surge of local deaths continues to rise. Addiction can affect anyone, but the grip of this epidemic has taken its toll on young adults between the ages of 18 to 25. Local doctors, schools, activist groups, police and legislators are actively working to educate, prevent and slow the death toll. Norman Wetterau, MD, FAAFP, FASAM has dedicated much of his practice to Addiction Medicine. He obtained his MD from Duke University in 1967 and completed his Family Practice Residency at the University of Rochester in 1970. In the 80’s Dr. Wetterau became very interested in Addiction Medicine. He now specializes in Addiction Medicine and has been a member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) since 1985. Dr. Wetterau’s experience also includes serving as the President of the New York Society of Addiction Medicine, as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Rochester, a member of the Annual Medical Scientific Conference, and serving on the ASAM Strategic Planning Task Force. Through his involvement, he has contributed to a number of legislative changes in New York State including legislation that prevents individuals from being arrested for possession when they call 911 for a drug overdose. Dr. Wetterau is very active in educating primary care physicians on how to recognize and treat individuals with substance abuse issues. Since the 80’s, Dr. Wetterau has worked with many addicts. In the past five years he has witnessed a substantial increase of opioid addictions, especially with the younger generation. He believes that addictive behaviors typically begin in middle school or early high school years. Often kids begin experimenting with alcohol and marijuana. “Substance abuse among this young age group is extremely contagious. For many kids this abuse can lead to addiction,” according to Dr. Wetterau. He has found more than half of the addicts he has treated began as teens using marijuana, alcohol and eventually misusing pain pills and heroin. Dr. Wetterau warns parents to not take any drug use lightly.
According to Dr. Wetterau, “Marijuana is not benign. It can affect a teen’s mental and emotional health. Depression and anxiety can be increased with marijuana use and lead to psychosis and paranoia.” He finds kids with unaddressed ADHD are at even higher risks. Dr. Wetterau has also seen addiction in kids after sports injuries where prescription opioids are used to treat pain. Dr. Wetterau recommends parents avoid the use of prescription pain pills in children and teens whenever possible. If necessary, use should be limited to a brief period, three to four days after surgery. This is especially critical if the patient uses alcohol or marijuana. He also recommends that parents lock up any pain medications to avoid any misuse from family members or children’s friends. Popular among some teens today is “skittles parties” where teens bring in pills from their home and share them at a party, often mixed with alcohol. This is extremely dangerous and deadly. Dr. Wetterau also sees an increase in prescription abuse among college students. Often college students buckle under the pressure of academic achievements, heavy course work and social pressures leading to the misuse of prescription pills like Xanax, Ritalin, Adderall and pain pills. It is important that parents stay connected to their college students and maintain open communication on substance abuse. Dr. Wetterau believes that it is imperative that medical professionals get on board with understanding addiction. Emergency rooms also play a vital role in proper treatment and referral of addiction. He sees a shortage in addiction specialist physicians in the area, but an overabundance of physicians who prescribe opioids. Treating the underlying disease is the key to success. Dr. Wetterau uses a variety of treatments to help his patients. His recovery success rate ranges between 60 to 80 percent. Opioid addiction has a harsh and dangerous withdrawal and the cravings don’t just go away. Dr. Wetterau finds success in medicated therapies, long term counseling and monitoring, but equally important is a change in situation. Choosing new friends, new recovery support groups, and new interests to keep them on track. “As much as addiction can be contagious, so is recovery,” said Wetterau. Ridding your home of unused pain medications is now much safer and easier in Monroe County thanks to Tom Sinclair, Industrial Waste Engineer for Monroe County. In April 2016 Tom rolled out the county-wide Pharmaceutical Waste Disposal Program. He was instrumental in helping Monroe county stay progressive with maintaining water quality for the residents. In 2006 Sinclair saw the national trend towards pharmaceutical waste showing up in the water supply. To stay ahead of this concern he implemented a program to safely dispose of unwanted pharmaceuticals. Until 2006 it was illegal in the state for any agency to collect unwanted pharmaceuticals. Tom found the loophole to this law by implementing the assistance of police to legally collect unwanted pharmaceuticals. Over the past 10 years he has progressively been widening the scope of the program. In April 2016 the Monroe County Sheriff and most local police agencies began to participate in the Pharmaceutical Waste Disposal Program. Most Monroe County police agencies now provide drop boxes at their stations and substations. The waste is picked up by the county and eventually transported to a company in Niagara that specializes in safe disposal. Since the inception of the program the county has collected over 68 tons of unwanted pharmaceuticals. Sinclair feels this program is critical in environmental safety but also significant to help fight the battle against the opioid epidemic. According to Tom, “the diversion factor” is one way the county can help by providing residents a program to safely remove these highly addictive prescriptions from the wrong hands. On the westside, you can bring your unwanted prescriptions to Greece Police, Gates Police, Ogden Police, Brockport Police, as well as the sheriff ’s substation in Ogden. The Pharmaceutical Waste Disposal Program of Monroe County has won awards from the USA EPA and is now being copied and implemented in 11 other counties in New York State. Spencerport High School has a program called the CARE Team. The CARE team is a Chemical Abuse Referral and Education Team. The High School has a team of staff comprised of teachers, administrators, school psychologists, and counselors to help with drug abuse prevention and intervention. The prevention team helps to plan events

Photo by Karen Fien. that raise student awareness and education on the dangers of drug and alcohol use. The intervention team works to support students who may be struggling with substance abuse. Peers can make anonymous referrals to the CARE Team to help a student they feel might be in danger with substance abuse. A protocol is followed to determine if there are grounds to provide support. Jessica Silsby, Vice Principal of 10th grade and the Care Team Leader finds that the program is getting a positive reception from the community. She said, “My hope is that we can work in a proactive collaboration with families to assist them in taking advantage of the resources available so that they can have informed conversations with their children. Addiction is an unfortunate reality of our society, which means it is a reality for students in our schools.” Jessica strongly encourages parents and caregivers to open communication with their children on this epidemic. Laurie began this non-profit grass roots community coalition in 2014 after she nearly lost her daughter to heroin addiction. Laurie’s daughter began using heroin at the age of 18. Within a few uses she was addicted and ended up on a path that led to 16 months of incarceration. Her daughter is successful in her recovery journey. “There is no book to tell you what to do when you are in this crisis,” she said. Laurie is a Hilton graduate and her children also attended Hilton schools. She is very invested in the community and helping families save their children’s lives from addiction. The objective of the group is to raise awareness about substance abuse and the stigma that overshadows it. They also strive to leverage community strengths and partnerships to address local prevention, treatment and recovery issues. According to Polatas, “You cannot arrest your way out of this epidemic. Prevention is key and the community needs to come together to partner with schools and officials.” The HPDICE group has monthly meetings to help educate on various topics pertaining to substance abuse. Topics range from drug trends, awareness, prevention and legislation issues. The meetings are free and open to the public. They meet the first Monday of every month from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Hilton High School. Hamlin Lions to provide eye screening for children On Monday, March 13, the Hamlin Lions Club will conduct a free vision screening for children from ages six months to six years at the Hamlin Public Library at 11 a.m. This eye screening will be able to detect potential issues such as near and far sightedness, blurred vision, unequal refractive power, eye misalignment, and astigmatism.
A handheld portable designed to detect vision issues will screen both eyes from a distance of approximately three feet. Nothing touches the eyes and no eye drops are needed. Union Congregational United Church of Christ ordains interim pastor

Family and friends joined Diane Ellis, Interim Pastor of the UCC Church in Churchville, as she was ordained into the UCC denomination on Sunday, February 26. The ordination was held at the Community Christian Church in Chili. Officials from the denomination along with ministers from a wide area participated in the hour-long service. A combined choir presented several resounding anthems, a soloist provided a specially requested hymn, and the congregation sang hymns in uplifting harmony. A reception was held following the service. The community is invited to visit the Churchville UCC and offer congratulations to The Reverend Diane Ellis. She has served as Interim Pastor at UCC since January 2016 and will continue her ministry at UCC until the church installs a permanent minister. Provided information

Brockport falls in semi’s by Warren Kozireski They rallied back twice from large deficits in the first half, but Brockport was outscored 23-10 in the third quarter by top-seed Irondequoit and lost 70-47 in the Class A1 boys’ basketball Section V semi-finals. “We just didn’t make any shots and they’re a good team - there’s a reason why they are 20-1,” head coach Scott Schlede said about the third quarter. “Our guys played their hearts out tonight, but we just didn’t hit some of the perimeter shots and that led to long rebounds and run-outs, so they had a couple of transition baskets. “Doesn’t change the type of season we had. I’m proud of this team. It’s the fourth time this year we’ve erased a double-digit deficit, but we couldn’t finish the run.” Irondequoit ran out to a 13-0 lead and led 16-2 before Brockport’s first comeback on the backs of scoring on five consecutive possessions at the end of the first and beginning of the second quarter.
Senior Raphael Odey started the run with an offensive rebound put-back before classmate Antonio Alvarez hit on consecutive drives to the basket. Cory Gross ended the first with his own drive and opened the second with a put-back to cut the Eagles lead to just four points. Irondequoit re-extended their advantage to nine, but Alvarez hit two free throws, a three-pointer and a runner at the end of the first half to make it a five-point deficit. That’s when the Eagles regrouped and scored on six of their next seven possessions while Brockport opted for some questionable shot selections to open up the lead for good, which extended to as many as 21 points in the third quarter. Alvarez finished with a team-best 21 points and added six rebounds while fellow senior Odey had six. Noah Schultz led with ten rebounds and five points, Gross six points with four rebounds, Amire Odey six points and Emilio Ball added four points for the 15-7 Blue Devils.
