Volunteers create dresses to bring hope, security and dignity to girls world-wide by Doug Hickerson It was an impressive scene at The Center on State Street in Brockport on October 27. Eight women were at work in the second-floor room, clustered in project groups around fabric and sewing materials. They were in various stages of making dresses for girls who live in challenging conditions locally and worldwide. Their mission statement reads: “ ‘Brockport Dresses for Girls Around the World’ is a program of dedicated volunteers making dresses and a difference for girls in need around the globe by giving them hope, security and dignity - one dress at a time.” According to the group’s leader, Andrea Perry, the program is modeled after the international organization by a similar name, but remains independent and locally controlled. A unique feature of this local group is a local courier delivering a suitcase full of apparel in person to the chosen foreign region. The volunteer organization has two dozen members on its email list. Some donate materials or money when needed, or sew dresses at home. Others turn out to the workshops held once a month. Working with Perry in leadership are Hanny Heyen, Mary Lynne Turner and Marcia Rachow. The four are regulars at the workshops, and were joined this time by Kathy Martel, Irene Pasternak, Jenifer Sheldon and Linda Breitenbach. Making dresses and more The finished dresses seen at the workshop were both inexpensive and attractive. Basic dresses are made from donated pillow cases. With head and arm cut-outs, they

are colorfully decorated and a pocket added. For cooler climates, or where the culture prohibits bare shoulders, tee shirts are the top and fabric is added to make a skirt. Pockets and trim are added, all beautifully color coordinated. Kits are put together at the workshop for home-assembly, providing pre-cut fabrics and trims. Along with a dress, girls receive underpants and a small handmade doll. Boys receive boxer shorts underwear and a Beanie Baby. A typical suitcase being delivered to warm countries contains 25 dresses, 25 underpants, 25 small hand sewn dolls, 25 boys’ boxer shorts and 25 Beanie Babies. In the winter season, domestic violence centers in Rochester (Willow) and Albion (Pathstone) receive appropriate apparel: Flannel nightgowns or pajamas, slippers, underwear for girls, boxer shorts, Beanie Babies and a quilt. Pajamas are for girls or boys, with a long sleeve tee shirt top and sewn flannel bottoms. The quilt is donated by the quilting group that meets in The Center. Deliveries here and around the world Besides the winter items sent to local domestic violence centers, dresses have been donated to The Clothing Shelf at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Brockport. Since the group started in May, 2015, “We also have sent dresses to Ecuador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Tanzania and Guatemala,” Perry said. “We are always on the lookout for opportunities to send our items to areas of poverty.” One opportunity occurred in September when a person at The Center said a friend is going to Guatemala. The friend was provided a suitcase of clothing to deliver.

Typically, couriers are local people known to travel the world, for example professors traveling with a class of students. Katrina Arndt, associate professor at St. John Fisher College, travels to Jamaica each year with JASY (Jamaican Advantage thru Sports for Youth). Each year they alternate taking volunteers from St. John Fisher and from Fairport High School. They go with sports equipment, spending a week in sports activities and then leave the equipment. Arndt agreed to deliver a suitcase of clothing this year. Generous donations The program is partially funded by the Sweden Seniors Association, Inc. at The Center. Extra funds have been raised at various events by selling dresses made by Hanny Heyen and Terry Joseph, origami greeting cards by Mary Lynne Turner, and needle holders by Marcia Rachow. Money is also directly donated by members on the email list and others. The cash is necessary to purchase tee shirts and to provide the $25 fee for couriers bringing the suitcase on a plane. “Most of our materials are donated by local people aware of the program,” Perry said. “Items have included: Sewing machines, cloth, trims, elastic, etc. The Lakeside Fig Twig gave us many items to make tee shirt dresses, plus packages of underwear and a generous cash donation.” “I feel this is a very contagious program,” Perry said about support from the greater Rochester/Brockport area. “I once described it to a stranger, and she and a friend in Owego made us 16 dresses. A lady in

Canandaigua made baby dolls for us, and so did the teen group at Seymour Library. Ladies at the Village at Unity made dresses for us. A lady in Spencerport sent us 25 dresses. A lady from Irondequoit sent us 24 finished dresses, plus kits and material. People are dropping off donations at The Center all the time. We are very grateful.” Personal inspiration for the volunteer work Perry started this program after meeting with Diane Acomb and the Dress-a-Girl program in Dansville. “I was attracted to the program because my mother-in-law, Ruth Perry, became involved when she was in her late 80’s until her death at 91,” Perry said. “She was a lifelong seamstress and advisor to Diane. I was inspired by her dedication and creativity.” Heyen has enjoyed sewing since she was 10 years old, starting as a member of a 4-H Club. That was two years after coming to the U.S. from Germany in 1948. “My family didn’t have much money, but the club donated fabric, and a neighbor gave me a used sewing machine. I started making my own clothes,” she said. “I feel like I’ve come somewhat full circle as I participate in Brockport’s Dress a Girl Around the World program. Not having much money back then, I am now using some of those earlier sewing skills, getting together with others, and knowing that the girls receiving them in impoverished countries across the globe will have the dignity of owning at least one dress.”

Kate Washington to speak at Gates Chili Chamber annual meeting The Gates Chili Chamber of Commerce will hold its Annual Meeting from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 15 at the Italian American Community Center, 150 Frank Dimino Way in the town of Gates. The guest speaker for this luncheon event is City of Rochester Deputy Commissioner of Neighborhood and Business Development, Kate Washington, who will speak on the City of Rochester’s plans for promoting the growth of small businesses and enhancing neighborhoods, as well as economic development in the region. Village Elementary gets excited about reading Village Elementary School Principal Dr. Ben Rudd and Assistant Principal Stephanie Schaufelberger announced this year’s selection for One School, One Book in one very big way. Classes gathered in the gymnasium to hear the name of the book - “The Lemonade War” by Jacqueline Davies - and join either Dr. Rudd’s “pink team” or Ms. Schaufelberger’s “yellow team.” Village students and their families will read “The Lemonade War” and encouraging others to read it as well as part of One School, One Book, a program designed to create a shared reading experience within a single elementary school community. Each school chooses a chapter book, every family in the elementary school receives a copy, and every family reads that book at home over the course of a single month. A group of students also presented copies of the book to the Board of Education and administrators on October 25. This is the seventh year Village Elementary School in Hilton has participated in One School, One Book. In addition to the kick-off event, this is the second year that the school has held a “Night at the Village” event where families can pick up their free

copies of the book and have fun doing reading-related activities. This year, students could do a scavenger hunt around the school, read with dogs in the library, play games in the gymnasium, have their picture taken at a lemonade stand and blog with other students around the country about the book. “The Lemonade War” tells the story of an exciting summer spent by a loving but competitive pair of siblings, Evan and Jessie Treski. At the end of the summer, Jessie, the younger and more academically inclined of the two, is delighted to learn that because she is skipping third grade, she will be in Evan’s fourth-grade class when school starts in a few days. To say the least, Evan is less than thrilled. The children’s personal conflict becomes a professional one as well, as they set out to outsell each other at their respective lemonade stands. Studies have shown that reading to children helps them to listen better and longer, build bigger vocabularies, understand concepts better, feel positive about both books and learning – and more. Pearce Memorial Church calls for Thanksgiving baskets Pearce Memorial Church provides an opportunity to have a meaningful impact in the community this holiday season. Pearce partners with FoodLink, Heart & Soul Church, Rochester Family Mission, Nurse Family Partnership, Lifetime Assistance, and nearly a dozen other churches in the city of Rochester to provide Rochester-area families in need with food at Thanksgiving. Over twenty years, the number of households receiving a box of non-perishable food items and a frozen turkey has grown to 1,000 families in 2015.

Remaining deer management permits available for hunters The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced that remaining Deer Management Permits (DMPs) in several Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) are available to hunters as of November 1. Deer Management Permits, which allow hunters to harvest antlerless deer, are issued for specific WMUs to control deer populations. In some WMUs, all applicants received permits during the initial application process. In units where the DMP target has not been reached, DEC will re-open the DMP application process on a first-come, first-served basis. Hunters may apply for up to two additional DMPs in these WMUs at any DEC license sales outlet. Leftover DMPs are not available by phone, mail, or internet. Applicants who previously paid the $10 DMP application fee during the initial application period, or are exempt from the application fee, will not be charged for this additional application. Hunters who did not previously apply for a deer management permit are required to pay the $10 application fee. Applications for leftover DMPs will be

It marks the second in this season’s series that focuses on the Morgan-Manning House or events and trends during the time the Morgan family lived there. Sponsored by the Western Monroe Historical Society, it is free and open to the public. Laura Dumuhosky, senior library assistant at Drake Library, will speak about clothing styles in the second half of the 19th century. Mannequins will display select pieces from two storage rooms in the historic home. The natural fiber fabrics of the Victorian Era have weakened with age and would not hold up well on live models, explains show organizer Mary Lynne Turner. She adds, “You could say our models are ‘frozen in time.’” The show will include a Grover & Baker sewing machine, circa 1863. The work of sorting, identifying, cataloging and preserving the Historical Society’s collection of clothing has gone on for years. The November 10 show presents some fruit of the continuing project. A student intern from The College at Brockport, Alexandra Mills, donates two days per week reading 50 years of typed and handwritten file cards, tags and pages of donation descriptions and matching those to the items. “Every day we have a few more fabulous discoveries and matches,” Turner said. Comments Trick or Treaters enjoy a ghoulish Halloween On “Halloween Nite” the Town of Riga Recreation Department along with the Churchville Lion’s club, hosted their annual Halloween Parade to provide the community’s young “Trick or Treaters” a safe environment in which to participate. The parade started at the Churchville Commons and was led up Main Street by the Churchville Fire Department’s fire truck and followed up by the Churchville Volunteer Ambulance to the Church Lodge in Churchville Park. Once there the youngsters were treated to apples, cider, donuts and of course bags of candy. A costume contest was also held. All involved were thrilled that the ghoulish characters could participate in a safe and secure environment. Churchville-Chili welcomes new board member The Churchville-Chili Central School District announced the selection of new Board of Education member, Kristen Brumbaugh, who was appointed at the October 25 Board of Education meeting. She replaces former board member, John Connelly, who resigned from his seat in September due to work commitments. Kristen will serve for the remainder of the 2016-17 school year. Kristen and her husband, Matthew, a ChurchvilleChili graduate, moved back into the district three years ago so their two children could also attend ChurchvilleChili. Women of the Well present “Certain Women” The Rochester-based storyteller’s group Women of the Well will present the drama “Certain Women” at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 14 State Street, Brockport, November 11, from 7 to 8 p.m. In the Gospel of Luke, a story tells of “certain women” who followed Jesus from Galilee all the way to Jerusalem, even to the cross. These women poured out their resources in service to Jesus and his disciples. One of these women, known throughout the centuries for her devotion to Jesus, was Mary of Magdala.

In this generation “certain women” have faithfully followed Jesus, giving all they had, and for some, giving even their lives, as with the four American women who were martyred in El Salvador on December 2, 1980. These women were Sister Maura Clarke, Sister Dorothy Kazel, Sister Ita Ford and Jean Donovan. Women of the Well will tell their dramatic stories, ending the evening with a Stations of the Cross in the women’s own words. The presentation is free and open to the public. Hilton Board of Education approves Capital Project The Hilton Board of Education adopted a $32,250,000 capital project proposal during their regular meeting on October 25. A public vote will be held on Thursday, December 15 from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. The project will have no impact on local property taxes. Included in the proposal is work to all of the district’s school buildings with a focus on safety and security, in addition to work identified in the building condition survey conducted by LaBella Associates, the district’s architecture, engineering, planning and consulting firm. The New York State Education Department requires that public schools conduct a building condition survey every five years. A Long Range Planning Committee, including district staff, community members and parents, began meeting over the summer to review the building condition survey and prioritize district capital needs in order to develop a recommendation to the Board of Education. Highlights of the proposed project include: •More secure main school entrances that restrict unauthorized visitor access to the rest of the buildings.

•New playgrounds at Northwood, Quest and Village Elementary Schools that replace 11-16 year old equipment. •Pavement, sidewalk and curb replacement at Hilton High School and Northwood Elementary School. •Kitchen equipment at the High School, Merton Williams Middle School and Quest that replaces 44-66 year old equipment. •HVAC, roof and electrical work at the High School, Merton Williams, Northwood and Village that was identified in the building condition survey. •Classroom renovations at the High School and Village. •Renovations to the varsity softball field and locker/team rooms; tennis court and fencing replacement; and HVAC improvements to pool spectator area. Residents can find more detailed information in a Capital Project newsletter mailed to homes in late November. James H. LaPointe James H. LaPointe, 92, of Charlottesville, formerly of Hilton, New York, died suddenly on Wednesday, October 12, 2016. Born on September 1, 1924, in Detroit, Michigan, he was the son of the late Charles J. and Alice Weaver LaPointe. He was also predeceased by his wife of 62 wonderful years, Jean Gilman LaPointe and Sister Sally Lapointe MacLeod of Warren, MI. The things Mr. LaPointe will be remembered for are not the worldly accomplishments, which are many, but the joy he brought to everyone he came in contact with. He kept his optimistic attitude all throughout his life and made it a point to talk with everyone he came in contact with. He served proudly in the U.S. Army in WWII and received a Purple Heart. He and his wife moved to Hilton, NY in 1991 to be near the grandchildren. He was active in the VFW Post 6105 of Hilton, designed and painted both the Parma Town Park Map (facing Rt. 259) and Parma VFW sign (facing Peck Road) and attended St. Paul Lutheran Church of Hilton volunteering as an usher and at the annual church sale. While residing in Charlottesville the past 5 years, he attended the Sojourner United Church of Christ. He enjoyed Senior Day Care at Jefferson County of Viginia Day program. He was known for his wonderful drawings in both pencil and watercolor there. He will be fondly remembered. Mr. LaPointe is survived by three children: Jeffrey (MaryLou) of Spencerport, NY, two daughters JoAnne and Janet of Charlottesville, VA, and two granddaughters: Emily LaPointe of Cary, NC, and Sarah (Bill) McCale of Niskayuna, NY, and a niece Karen (Gary) Laskowski and nephew Kevin MacCleod of Detroit. His daughters received friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 20, 2016, at Hill and Wood Funeral Home in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Parma voters will decide on highway superintendent position by Kristina Gabalski Things may change at the Town of Parma Highway Department if voters approve Local Law #1 - 2016 on Election Day. If approved, the law would abolish the elected position of highway superintendent and create an appointed highway superintendent position in the town. Town Board members would make the appointment and they have stated the goal of the change would be to form a department of public works managed by a director in the future. “The Town Board feels strongly that the residents of Parma would benefit by making the change to an appointed highway superintendent,” Supervisor Jim Smith says. “The biggest advantage would be the ability to advertise for the position, look at resumes, and interview the most qualified individual. Then we can establish goals and have accountability. We think we will get more applicants for a non-political position.” Town Board members approved the law on August 16 following a lengthy public hearing. The vote was 4-1 with Supervisor Smith and council members Gary Comardo, Jim Roose and Don Barlow voting yes. Council member Kyle Mullen voted no. The law must now be approved by voters through the mandatory referendum on Election Day. According to meeting minutes, Councilperson Comardo said before the vote that he felt the change would be the, “most efficient arrangement and the best thing for the town.” Councilperson Barlow said other towns have made the move to a director of public works. “Larger towns have moved toward this and Parma is not as small as we used to be. As we have grown we are experiencing growing pains, but felt this is the right direction to go,” the August 16 minutes state.

Both Supervisor Smith and Councilperson Roose said it is important to put the issue before the voters to decide, and Councilperson Mullen cited a recent report to the town from the EPA, and concerns over an oil water separator which had been purchased and obtained, but was still not operational by the August 16 meeting. In a letter to the Suburban News published October 23, 2016, Parma Town Board members stated the change is necessary now to meet fiscal and regulatory demands on municipalities, as well as improve accountability to local citizens and to meet state and federal regulatory requirements. “An elected highway superintendent does not answer to the town board, and therefore sets tasks and priorities that can be inconsistent with fiscal constraints, regulatory record-keeping and public need,” the letter stated. During the August public hearing on the proposed change, residents who spoke expressed concerns. Most said they were not pleased that an elected position would be taken away if the highway superintendent were appointed. According to the meeting minutes, resident Angelo Bianchi said he felt an elected highway superintendent is more responsible to the public. In a statement released by the New York State Association of Town Superintendents of Highways (NYSAOTSOH), President Michael Boesel said the organization opposes the change. “An elected highway superintendent works directly for the residents of the town, they are essentially their boss ... an appointed highway superintendent means residents have no direct say on who holds, what is in most people’s opinion, the most important full time position in their town,” the NYSAOTSOH statement says. Parma Supervisor Jim Smith says over the past 30-plus years, there has typically been only a single candidate for the post.

The term of current Parma Highway Superintendent Brian Speer ends at the end of 2017. Town leaders have said if the change is voted down, things will continue as they are now. If

Rosemary Catlin will be recognized by NABT and the Carolina Biological Supply Company at the NABT Honors Luncheon in Denver, Colorado on November 5, 2016. sports & recreation Spencerport girls’ win fourth Section V title by Warren Kozireski One year after the top-ranked Spencerport Rangers girls’ soccer team was knocked out in the first round of the playoffs, they won their fourth overall Section V championship and first since the surprising 2007 title with a 2-0 win over seventh-seed Aquinas. After a scoreless first half the Rangers broke the scoreless duel on an unassisted goal by junior co-captain Luca Fahmer in the 43rd minute - her seventh of the season. They got an insurance goal from junior Aleah Martone with an assist by sophomore Venessa Watson with three minutes remaining in regulation. It marked Martone’s fourth goal of the season and Watson’s fifth assist Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Opladen was credited with six saves as the Rangers

registered their 14th shutout of the season and sixth consecutive dating back to late in the first half on October 7 against Webster Schroeder. She enters the state playoffs first in Section V among goalkeepers who have played at least 1,000 minutes having allowed only four goals all season - a goals per game average of .214. The win - their 19th of the season shattered the school mark of 16 wins set during the 1980 season when they won their second sectional title. The other two titles came the first year girls’ soccer was offered - 1973 - along with 2007. Brockport’s three elementary schools compete each year for the coveted Walk to School Day trophy, which is presented to the school with the highest percentage of participation. A record-breaking 670 Brockport Central School District students joined thousands of students around the world as they walked, biked, skateboarded and scootered to school during International Walk to School Day on October 5. The event, organized locally by the Walk to School Subcommittee of Walk! Bike! Brockport!, promotes the benefits of physical activity. Families who wished to participate but lived too far away had the opportunity to park and walk from Bill Gray’s or the Village Optician. Tents were set up at each location so students could pick up an apple (donated by Kalir Farm) and a special trinket of appreciation for their participation. Student volunteers from the College at Brockport boys’ baseball team and girls’ basketball team accompanied the walkers and community volunteers were stationed at intersections to offer support and encouragement. Christmas on the Canal celebrates 21 years It’s time to gear up for the most wonderful time of the year. Christmas is coming to the quaint Village of Spencerport on Sunday, December 4 from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Union Street. Our 21st year of holiday fun will soon arrive as our Christmas on the Canal event ushers in the season. Once again, it’s horse drawn Hayrides and Carriage rides, Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus, a free Children’s Activity Tent, a Living Nativity, Entertainment on the Bandstand, Food, Shopping and good old Christmas spirit. The church bells toll at 5 p.m. signaling our gathering at the gazebo on the canal for our community Tree Lighting, followed by our one mile Candlelight Caroling Stroll led by horse and wagon with candles aglow. Bundle up and come out to have some old fashioned fun with us, but first close your eyes and make a wish for the magic of Christmas to continue in Spencerport village.
