Rob Carges oversees final meeting as Sweden supervisor; Kevin Johnson sworn-in as new supervisor by Kristina Gabalski Outgoing Sweden Supervisor Rob Carges wrapped up 24 years of service as a member of the Sweden Town Board December 28, during the board’s regular end of year meeting. Councilperson Bob Muesebeck recognized Supervisor Carges during the meeting, noting that Carges had spent more than 1,000 Tuesday nights at the town hall for meetings, and voted on 3,200 resolutions. Muesebeck also discussed highlights of
Carges’ more than two decades as a member of the town board, including the acquisition of the Sweden Town Park, the building of the Seymour Library, establishment of water and sewer districts, and keeping a very low tax rate for property owners. “We are going to miss his knowledge,” Muesebeck said of Carges. “If we need you, we’re going to call you.” Supervisor Carges said that not going to the town hall on Tuesday evenings will be a, “big adjustment for me ... I’ve enjoyed most every minute ... the citizens of Brockport and Sweden are really great people as are

all who work at the town and the town board members,” Carges said. “I wish my successor the best of luck.” Councilperson Lori Skoog remembered that Carges had been her student during her first year teaching at the Campus School. “I never in a million years would have guessed that we would both be on the town board together,” Skoog said. Newly elected Sweden Supervisor Kevin Johnson took the oath of office January 2 along with newly elected councilperson Patricia Hayles, Town Justice Anthony Perry, and Town Clerk Karen Sweeting.
Councilperson Robert Muesebeck was sworn-in as deputy supervisor. “I hope to accomplish a lot for you to make your lives better,” Johnson told town residents in attendance. Johnson was sworn-in by Dr. Donald E. Bain, president emeritus, St. John Fisher College and past town justice, Town of Williamson. Johnson is a former undergraduate student of Bain. Bain said Johnson has always made sure he was “exquisitely prepared,” for the demands of his studies, his work and his community service efforts.
Historic change in leadership in Town of Clarkson by Kristina Gabalski The Town of Clarkson has its first new leader in nearly four decades. Jerry Underwood was sworn into office by Town Clerk Sharon Mattison December 27, 2017. Underwood, a Democrat, was elected to the post in November in an upset victory over long-time Republican Supervisor Paul Kimball. Underwood’s first meeting as a member of the town board was the annual organizational meeting held January 2, 2018. Underwood made a very unassuming start. “My name is Jerry and I’m glad to be here,” Supervisor Underwood told fellow board members and town officials in
attendance as the meeting began. Council members quickly worked through 40 resolutions during the meeting, which included annual appointments and policy adoptions. Councilperson Allan Hoy was appointed deputy supervisor. Richard Olson was re-appointed town attorney; Chatfield Engineering was re-appointed to Office of Engineer; and Chad Fabry was re-appointed as Building Inspector, Code Enforcement Officer and Fire Marshal. Council members also approved the wage and salary schedule for 2018. Supervisor Underwood will receive a salary of $22,593, which he said he will donate to the Seymour Public Library.

teaching with his pupils and his peers (To the reader: Chris Albrecht will be presenting “Star Struck in Brockport: Lewis Swift, The Man Who Looked Up” at the Morgan-Manning House on January 11 at 7 p.m. Swift was born in Clarkson in 1820 and became one of the most famous and world renown astronomers. Albrecht, a Clarkson resident, teaches fourth grade in the BCSD Hill School. He was designated the 2018 New York State Teacher of the Year. For the press release about the January 11 event, I asked Albrecht for some personal background. He provided extensive information about his teaching goals, family, science interest, and love for backcountry hiking. Behind his passion for teaching -- and being an ambassador to teachers with his state-wide honor -- is the inspiration he has had from his school, his family, and this community. I had to share his full, upbeat narrative. – Doug Hickerson, contributing writer)

From Chris Albrecht… My interest in astronomer Lewis Swift came from my students. I do not have a passion for astronomy, but last year (and now this year), I have empowered passionate students to be part of their community. I found four students to help put this January 11 presentation together with my extensive guidance. I am very concerned that we need a stronger connection of students serving in our community through adult mentorships. So, I have decided to take one program per year and do it with BCS students. This year I have two students who are nine and two students who are 12 working with me. I have spent about 50 hours after school preparing this presentation with the kids. It would have taken me 20 hours, but the kids slow things down. This does not bother me. I know that I am helping prepare the next generation, so it is time well spent. In terms of me... I was born in Fairport and have taught at the Hill School for 20 years. I have two graduates of BHS and my son (and final child) is a senior. I am a first generation American with a dad from Germany, and my mom’s father came from Italy. I lost my mom to cancer in February. I wear a ponytail to honor the fight against cancer. It is cut about every 18 months. I have been married for 23 years to my wife, Jennifer. My personal interest is in geology. I have been studying inclusions in amber stones for 25 years. I have one of the largest collections in the world. I have presented nationally on this topic. I also have a passion for backcountry hiking. I can go weeks without seeing a soul. I have seen some very interesting places in the US and Canada. You mentioned that I am the 2018 New York State Teacher of the Year. This is true. I am fortunate to have an amazing school (Hill School). My principal, the teachers and the students inspire me. The families of Brockport inspire me. The university inspires me, and I have had an amazing life. I have a very supportive family. Therefore, I attribute this recognition as a “team win”. I am who I am because I have had great mentors, friends and work in a joyful environment. My wife lets me work late hours without protest.

The award is challenging. It is an ambassadorship. I have spoken to 17 groups since September. I have visited countless classrooms all over the state. I decided to take all of the money that was given to me and buy children’s books. I give them out when I do activities with classes that I visit. I have not kept a cent. I believe that we need to model citizenship more than ever, and service is a big part of that. My largest audience was in the Lake Placid hockey rink. I presented to 3,000 people at the NY School Boards Association Annual Meeting. I will be presenting to 5,000 people at the annual NYSUT meeting. I am a guest of the White House in April. Yes, I will meet the President. I will also be with the other 56 teachers of the year in California (January), Washington, DC (April), Huntsville, Alabama (July) and NJ in October. The experience is a lot of work, but I have had a great time working with people who love schools as much as I do. It’s time to break out the beagles
Dealerships would like to welcome
by T.R. Hendrick The melody echoed out from the frozen swamp, forcing me to laugh out loud. The two beagles’ voices were complete opposites … Kandy’s deep baritone contrasting with Tinker’s high-pitched squall. But when they sang together it was as sweet as any Everly Brothers’ harmony. The bewitching sound grew closer as I squinted into the mid-morning sun magnified by a fresh snowpack. The dogs were 100 yards out, and I knew that the cottontail had to be close. A flash of brown to the right caught my eye and I whirled to spot the bunny heading my way at the same instant he saw me. He did an about-face in the blink of an eye and was headed straight away as my 20-gauge barked in concert with the oncoming hounds. The barking was just more motivation for the rabbit as the #6 shot hit a foot behind him. He kicked into hyperdrive and disappeared into the thick thornapples as the pattern from my second shot plowed snow at his heels. This was an excerpt from an article I wrote for American Hunter magazine back in 2000. I figured it was good way to start my beagle column and maybe to front just a little. Now that the deer hunters are out of woods, rabbit hunters can now get out there with their beagles without worrying about their dogs or themselves getting shot by a deer hunter. This is a sad statement, but true. I don’t mean to paint all the deer hunters as incompetent numbskulls but the 1% that are is enough to keep every rabbit hunter I know well out of the field until the orange army is back on the couch. To get some perspective on rabbit hunting with beagles I contacted local veteran beagler Tom Hendrick. Hendrick has raised and trained close to a dozen beagles in his wearisome life and knows these little hounds well. Known to be a bit of a boastful curmudgeon and hard to get a straight answer from, I contacted the man with apprehension. I introduced myself and he immediately barked, “Who cares and what the hell is the Suburban News?” When I described the paper, he said “Oh yeah… I line my bird cage with that rag.” I explained to him that we have a circulation of over 33,000 readers and have received many awards for excellence in news and advertising since our inception in 1953. He responded with, “Oh yeah, if they’re so great why would they hire you?” I ignored the insult and quickly changed the topic to rabbit hunting with beagles. The old grouch immediately did an about face and his tone softened; he was suddenly interested in answering my questions on the topic. The know-it-all took a deep breath and began to pontificate: Running cottontail rabbits with beagles is without a doubt the best way to spend a day outdoors in the winter. For starters you have a very long season as it opens on the first of October, but the hunting doesn’t really get good until you have some snow on the ground. The season runs through to the end of February; so, when it comes to getting the most time in the field with your hunting dog, rabbit hunting is by far the lengthiest. But I must admit that hunting with beagles can be a nightmare. I have owned many over the decades but only two really good ones in all that time. Don’t get me wrong, they have a great temperament and their friendly, cute personalities can be very appealing … but don’t be fooled. Those innocent-looking canines are a species of hound, and hound dogs hunt for themselves. Unlike bird dogs and labs that hunt for their owners, once a beagle strikes a hot scent they could care less if you are with them or not. They are
Cadets trounce Warriors by Warren Kozireski Hilton registered two pins, three technical falls and received five forfeits on their way to a 63-13 victory over visiting Webster-Schroeder in boy’s wrestling. The Cadets entered the match ranked third in the state among large schools in the first New York State Sportswriters poll released January 1. Ryan Hinman pinned his man in 1:45 at 132 lb. while Mike Franczak did the same in 3:08 at 145 lb. for Hilton. Rocco Camillaci began the match at 99 lb. with a third period technical fall after building a 14-1 second period advantage. Greg Diakomihalis (113 lb.) racked up 19 points over the first two minutes in his 19-4 tech fall. Ryan Burgos was almost as dominant in building a 13-3 first period lead before finishing his 21-6 tech fall with four second period takedowns at 120 lb. Cadet Nate Lee had one of the more exciting bouts of the evening as his reverse with only three seconds remaining in the third overtime gave him a 3-1 win at 106 lb. Codey Bailey also took overtime to finish his 152 lb. match with a fourth period takedown and near fall in a 5-1 decision. Jacob Brunette (170 lb.), Sammy DePrez (182 lb.), Thomas Foos (195 lb.), Nate Whybra (220 lb.) and Collin Burns (285 lb.) all received forfeits for the Cadets.

Provided photo. genetically forced to follow the track at all costs. I believe that a beagle on a hot rabbit track would follow the scent into a burning building. That is why they are often lost and at times hit by cars. I have had both happen to my dogs. Although over the last decade there have been huge breakthroughs for anybody that hunts with hounds, be it beagles, coon, fox or coyote dog, with the advent of GPS tracking collars you can now put on the dogs that show you exactly where they are. If you are interested in owning a beagle there is a good magazine and web page out at Better Beagling, http:// betterbeagling.com/ with some helpful information. Or, better yet, find someone who has the little hounds and ask to tag along with them. There are many good beagle clubs around the state and we have a good one right in LeRoy at 1710 Flint Hill Road http://www.pioneerbeagleclub.com/. Their clubhouse is located just outside of Mumford, across from the Genesee Country Museum. They have 100 acres of fenced-in running ground. Members there can put you on the right track towards possibly acquiring a dog. Be careful if you consider buying an adult beagle, many have problems running deer which is a huge no-no when rabbit hunting. Deer don’t circle back to where they were first jumped as rabbits do. It usually leads to losing your dog or, even worse, having it hit by a car. Then, amazingly, Hendrick fell asleep right in mid-sentence. I whistled loudly into the phone a few times, but all I could hear was snoring on the other end so I hung up and was afraid to call the old gasbag back. What Mr. Hendrick failed to mention before he dozed off was that rabbit hunting is a great way to get kids started hunting. There are no early hours or a need to sit quietly still, plus they will love the singing of beagles on a hot rabbit track. When all is said and done, it is a great way to cure the winter blahs.

Girl Scouts to host a one day Join-a-thon On January 10, Girl Scouts of Western New York (GSWNY) will hold the Girl Scout Join-a-thon from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and take on-the-spot registrations over the phone. This event will utilize eight different radio stations throughout GSWNY’s nine county regional service area to direct listeners to call 1.888.837.6410 and register for Girl Scouts. Girl Scouts offers the best all-girl, girl-led leadership development experience for girls in the world where their specific needs can be met. The proof is in the results as 80 percent of female tech leaders, 50 percent of female business owners, and 90 percent of female astronauts in the U.S. were all Girl Scouts. Girls Scouts develop a strong sense of self, display positive values, seek challenges, and solve problems in their communities. From building robots, rock climbing at camp, running a cookie business, to service projects at local food banks and animal shelters, the adventures for a girl to explore her leadership potential are endless in Girl Scouts. Adults who register to become volunteers and or register
their girls will win Girl Scout goodies when they call 1-888837-6410 during the Girl Scout Join-a-thon. Adults must be 18 years of age or older to volunteer and girls must be in grades k-12 to join. In addition, Girl Scouts is sending out a special invite for girls in grades k-1 to join as Daisy Girl Scouts. At Girl Scouts, girls get to lead their own adventure and team up with other girls in an all-girl environment to choose the exciting, hands-on activities that interest them most in important skill areas like science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), Outdoors, Life Skills, and Entrepreneurship. While a girl may be exposed to these subjects at school and in other places, at Girl Scouts she will experience them in a unique way that puts her on a path to a lifetime of leadership, adventure, and success This is a one day event and those interested in joining as an adult volunteer or girl member can still register after; however, the special Girl Scout goodie prizes won’t be available. H-P Parks & Recreation earns four 2017 GVRPS awards Hilton-Parma Parks & Recreation is very proud of what they do for the community. On an annual basis, the department will submit award nominations for recognition consideration by the local Genesee Valley Recreation and Park Society. There are 19 award categories and the entire Genesee Valley Region is considered with Monroe County being the largest county represented. These awards are very competitive. This year, they have been recognized with four such awards - three of them for individuals in the community, one for a program. These recipients will be now eligible for NYS recognition. A lunch reception for the recipients was held Friday, November 17 at Frontier Field. The award recipients were as follows with the criteria for award eligibility: Dave Tresholavy - ABCD Award - The individual goes “Above and Beyond the Call of Duty” by having made an outstanding contribution to the field of public recreation and parks, significant enough to have had a stimulating effect on recreation at a town, city, state or national level. Dave Tresholavy has held the position of volunteer Recreation Commissioner for Hilton-Parma Recreation & Parks, representing the Village of Hilton within the Town of Parma since December of 2008. He is that genuine guy who cares for the community in all that he does. His job does not end at the monthly commissioner meetings, as you will always see Dave at Hilton-Parma Recreation special events. Tony Caraglio, Caraglio’s Pizza - Outstanding Corporate Partnership - The Outstanding Corporate Partnership Award recognizes a vendor, company, or individual who has significantly contributed to the field of parks and recreation and developed a strong partnership with GVRPS, a local organization or agency. This vendor, company, or individual has shown great leadership and support to the parks and recreation field by providing equipment, volunteer time, in-kind services or other contributions to a project or program that benefits the community and demonstrates the importance of parks and recreation. Caraglio’s Pizza is located in the heart of the Village of Hilton. The owner, Tony Caraglio, opened the first of his now five Caraglio’s Pizzas in Hilton back in 2004. Tony is the ideal Corporate Partner as he truly understands the importance of community and what it means to play a vital role in his
community’s well-being and growth. Over the years Caraglio’s has been a part of the recreation program, assisting with events like the Halloween Celebration, Pizza Playoff and Experience Parma with donated product and certificates to always sponsoring a youth baseball or softball team. Creative Tech Camp for Girls - Program of Merit - This award will be given to a department that has developed an outstanding ongoing program that is innovative, creative and unique in nature or that demonstrates a new twist on an old theme while still being consistent with current trends. This program must enrich a group, community, or individual and is characterized as an organized recreation or leisure activity that is offered either on a daily, weekly, seasonal or annual basis. In the summer of 2015, Hilton-Parma Recreation offered a new program, Creative Tech Camp for Girls. The Camp is three years into its existence and offers one of the most unique and creative twists on themed week long camps as it offers a special opportunity for young ladies in grades three through eight to learn the wonders of technology; one of the most relevant fields and trends in the world today and a field that is generally associated with men. Ellen Fridman, Hilton-Parma Recreation Intern – Dr. Christine Z. Howe Memorial Scholarship The Genesee Valley Recreation and Park Society recognizes the importance of recruiting spirited, resourceful and intelligent people into the Therapeutic, Public, Private, Park, Recreation and Leisure Service industry. The Genesee Valley Recreation and Park Society provides professional development assistance to select students pursuing a major in a Recreation, Park Management or Leisure Services program. The recipient must be at least a matriculated major in a four-year accredited Recreation, Leisure Services, or Park Management program and enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours. Ellen Fridman is a SUNY Brockport student and just finished her final semester as a full semester intern. She has set the bar high during her internship with HiltonParma Recreation and there is truly no one more deserving of the honor she has received. The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that “little extra” and Ellen puts forth that little extra effort on a daily basis in all she does. Provided information

St. Leo Council members receive Knights of Columbus awards Each year the Knight of Columbus, an International Catholic men’s fraternal organization, presents individual Councils with awards according to the accomplishments of the Council. The “Shining Armor” award is given to a Knight who has been very active in his first year of membership. This year the award was given to Ron Bourret. A “Family of the Year” award is given to a Knight and his family who serves his parish and community both individually and as a family. Each Council’s “Family of the Year” is then in the running for the “State Family of the
Year” and in turn is eligible for the “International Family of the Year.” The St. Leo Council #9461 is honored to have the Jose Rivera Family chosen as the third runner-up for the “International Family of the Year” for 2017. The John VerWulst Family received the “Family of the Year” award and is now eligible for the State and International Family of the Year. As a Council, the St. Leo Council received the “Double Star Council Award” by doubling their annual goal for number of new members last year. Provided information and photos
