Ogden Library hosts collection event July 18 for Puerto Rico Story and photos by Teresa Schreiber Werth When Spencerport resident and nurse Maria Delgado Sutton saw Hurricane Maria bearing down on her home of Puerto Rico, she got a sick feeling in her stomach. Her husband and Physician Assistant, Jim, was already helping hurricane victims of two earlier hurricanes in Texas and Florida. The predictions got more worrisome as the eye of the monster storm headed for Maria’s hometown of Yabucoa and then destroyed it. That was September 20, 2017. Although Jim was due for time off from disaster relief, he went to Puerto Rico and did what he could to help. Delgado Sutton and their two daughters waited impatiently in Spencerport for word that relatives were safe. It was 12 days before they heard, from a stranger, that family members were alive. As the days and weeks went by, Delgado Sutton was frustrated by the response to Puerto Rico’s needs. Today, more than 250,000 people - American citizens - have left Puerto Rico and resettled elsewhere. More than a quarter of the schools have closed and an estimated 11,000 homes, not people, are still without electricity. The death toll is still imprecise, but the original report of 64 deaths has been updated to an estimate of 4,645. By November of last year, Delgado Sutton felt she had to do something on her own to help so she started Puerto Rico One Box at a Time. It was a simple concept: Go to the post office and pick up a free 12”x12”x5” cardboard mailing box. Fill it with any of the non-perishable items on the list, seal it, address it and pay a flat rate of $18.90 (up to 70#) to mail it to Puerto Rico. The idea caught on. With the help of her neighbor, Lisa Beth White, things began to happen. Schools in Spencerport and Albion held fundraisers. Churches collected items. Spencerport Rotary Club donated money toward the postage. Donations appeared from friends and strangers. To date, 172 boxes have been received and distributed in Puerto Rico, first by one of her cousins and then through pastors of two churches. Only one box has been returned. Delgado Sutton gave a presentation to the Spanish Club at Albion Middle and High School in March. Spanish teachers Elizabeth Hall and Casey Flynn organized the collection of enough items and money to send 23 boxes to Puerto Rico. In May, to show her appreciation for their efforts, Delgado Sutton and her friend Olga Edwards, prepared a typical Puerto Rican meal and served it to the students at an after-school meeting. “Food and sharing

Students helped themselves to a big kettle of pollo guisau (stewed chicken), arroz guisado con salchichas or arroz guisado con gandules (yellow rice with Vienna sausage or pigeon peas), and a traditional, creamy flan for dessert. While they ate, one of the students translated a letter from a woman who received one of their boxes. “We always enclose a stamped self-addressed envelope in the box in case people want to respond to the donors, and who knows, develop a friendship!” said Delgado Sutton, “They are so appreciative, asking God to bless the generosity of their American friends.” Recently, Delgado Sutton has been in touch with Paul Figueroa, a teacher of Puerto Rican descent who formerly taught in Rochester. He is now teaching elementary school in Bayamon, one of the poorest and most dangerous areas. Next year he will be teaching first grade and will have 12 to 15 students. She wants to send each student two boxes: a box of non-perishable foods and a box of school supplies. “We ask parents to provide the basics like pencils and paper but they can’t afford craft supplies, PlayDoh, glue, scissors or drawing/copy paper,” Figueroa said in a recent interview. “I’m teaching a bilingual program where they’re learning to read and write English and Spanish. My students are very poor and they probably have no books at home …

certainly not books written in English!” That’s when Maria teamed up with local author Teresa Werth and local photographer Joe Pompili, who are donating copies of their recently published book, “Goodnight Spencerport,” so there can be one book for each student. “This accomplishes several things,” Delgado Sutton says. “It’s a beautiful book written in English that will help Paul’s students practice their reading skills. It comes from the same community that’s sending them boxes of food and school supplies, and it’s an opportunity for Paul to teach them a little history about the Erie Canal!” Werth and Pompili are excited to collaborate on the project, connecting them with new readers all the way from Spencerport, across the ocean, to Bayamon, Puerto Rico. If other teachers in Puerto Rico want to use the book, they are willing to donate additional copies. “We never imagined that our little book could be appreciated in someplace so far away,” said Werth, “and that it could be used as a tool to help kids learn to read and understand English!” Figueroa will be visiting Rochester in July and plans to attend a collection event at The Ogden Farmers’ Library on Wednesday, July 18 from 1 to 3 p.m. along with Maria Delgado Sutton and Teresa Werth. Arc of Monroe new residence in Greece The Arc of Monroe, a not-for-profit organization supporting people with disabilities in Monroe County, is celebrating the Grand Opening of a new residential house in Greece. The new residence addresses the current housing dilemma and the shortage of homes for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. A generous, anonymous community member donated a portion of funds to purchase and renovate an existing house. The Arc Foundation of Monroe raised the remaining funds needed. The intention of the donation was to create a better residential experience for five people with disabilities. The new house provides five gentlemen with 2,400 square feet of space all on one level with complete accessibility so they can age in place. The home includes five bedrooms and three separate living areas. The world’s population, including people with developmental disabilities, is living longer than ever and with an increased life expectancy comes increased challenges in addressing age-related issues, including housing. The Arc of Monroe currently makes 204 beds available within residential services of which 69 percent of the residents are over the age of 50, and 33

percent of the residents are between the ages of 60 to 69. The number of adults in New York State with intellectual and developmental disabilities aged 60 and older is projected to nearly double from 641,860 in 2000 to 1.2 million by 2030. An increase in aging people with disabilities presents the need for more housing that can be staffed appropriately. The Arc of Monroe is actively in search of more affordable and accessible housing options in Rochester and surrounding areas for people with disabilities. This new house is one more victory for this segment of our community, and The Arc of Monroe is pleased to be able to provide this opportunity to these five men. The Arc of Monroe is affiliated with the Collaborative of the Arc of New York, a regional association of 16 non-for-profit Arc US, Inc. human services agencies across upstate New York serving more than 9,000 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. They support people with intellectual or developmental disabilities, as well as a wide variety of other disabilities, and have been providing a variety of programs and services for over 1,700 people with I/DD and their families in the Rochester community for over 60 years.

Dream to reality: The Gathering Table celebrates ten years It started out as a dream. At first it seemed a bit ... ambitious. But they had faith, and hope. And, after lots of prayer and hard work, the dream became a reality. And it grew. The Brockport First Baptist Church is very excited to celebrate its ten-year anniversary of the Gathering Table on July 15. On the third Sunday of each month, dedicated members of the church serve up a free hot and well-balanced meal to anyone in our community. Since the doors opened on July 20, 2008, it has become clear that fellowship and connection with others are as important as the food that is served. Lots of stories, kindness and support have been exchanged over the years, along with countless hugs and handshakes. There’s no question that a meaningful relationship with the community has been developed. The Gathering Table is open on the third Sunday of each month (closed in June) from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Brockport First Baptist Church, 124 Main Street. The Teen Closet, offering clothing and accessories to area teens free of charge, is open at the same time. The Gathering Table also provides a wonderful opportunity for service for the church’s congregation as well as other churches, organizations and individuals. Tour Monroe County’s only surviving academy building Free tours of the restored historic Academy building in Clarkson are held every Sunday in July from 2 to 3 p.m. Come to visit this local, pre-Civil War, two story brick, Greek Revival building at the four corners in Clarkson. While you may have heard about the old 1854 building, chances are you have no idea where it is. It sits back from the road in the shadow of the Christ Church of Clarkson near the intersection of Routes 19 and 104. Most cars go by without any idea that they have just passed the only restored 19th Century Academy building in Monroe County. There were other 19th century academies in Monroe County but none of them have survived as schools. One of the first was built in 1826 in Henrietta called the Monroe Academy, the first incorporated school in Monroe County, but there are no records of its further history. The Riga Academy, circa 1811, was converted from a tavern into a school which existed from 1847-1861. It has been a private residence since that time. The Rochester Free Academy was the first schoolhouse built in Rochester in 1813. That was replaced by a stone building which was rebuilt several times and housed a school from 1874 until 1904. It is currently referred to as the Academy Building and is being leased as lofts. The Mendon Cobblestone Academy was built circa 1835 and used as a school for about a century. Since 1950 it was remodeled and used as a firehouse. There was also a school in Penfield called The Academy built in 1827 several blocks north of the main four corners. It was located on a site called Lyceum Hill. However, in 1840 this large, three story brick building burned, and the school was not rebuilt. We are just lucky that our Academy Building survived and was not forgotten as was the fate of all the other Academies in Monroe Country. Now Clarkson’s 21st century children continue to sit at the old desks, use the same old blackboards and chalk to practice handwriting, and play in the schoolyard as the children did “way back when.” Provided information

Opinion/Comments When did we get a cat? The five cats shown here are not mine. Nor do they “belong” to anyone, not even the person who created this colony of 20 to 30 “feral” cats on a 100’ x 200’ lot zoned residential. I am subjected to scenes like the one above constantly. Some of these cats are neutered and vaccinated but the ones that aren’t are the biggest cause for concern. The fear of rabies and the many other diseases these animals can carry and pass to humans and pets is a daily threat. Last week I was going to submit a pretty long article sympathizing with Mr. Keck from Brockport (Opinion Letter, Hamlin-Clarkson Herald and Suburban News West Edition, June 10, 2018), but due to recent events I will keep it short. I wanted to let him know that he is not alone in his battle to stop this craziness of having a large number of wild animals forced upon him. And I wanted to comment on Mayor Blackman’s subsequent article and ask her if she has taken into consideration the complaints of all her residents. It sounds like she is trying to find a solution and I applaud her efforts, but if the TNVR people want to Trap/Neuter/Vaccinate/Return, it’s not going to help the residents who don’t want to deal with wild cats or cat problems on their property. Even a neutered cat will use your garden as a litter box. Three years ago I was thrown into this nightmare of

living with “feral” cats because a neighbor chose to feed a stray and the litter that followed. After one year of finding an alarmingly large number of cats on my property and putting up with the insanity of it all, I asked for help. I chose not to listen to the inhumane suggestions but when I was told I could legally trap them and relocate them, that’s what I did. I didn’t want them dead, just gone. But the cats just keep coming, no end in sight and no one is being held accountable so I have decided that I’m wasting my efforts. If the person responsible doesn’t want to be responsible for them I will continue to trap. I no longer have anywhere to bring them and I certainly don’t want to be charged with a felony like Mr. Keck was threatened with, so the cats will now be going to Lollypop Farm. I’ve documented this “feral” colony for three years and I don’t believe I’m a threat to any “indoor/outdoor” cats but if you let your cat roam the neighborhood all night, every night and it goes missing you’ll know where to look for it. And if you have a problem with cats going to Lollypop like I do, you can thank all the heartless people who think its okay to put these poor animals out there to become coyote food and road kill, if this is not animal abuse I don’t know what is. And you can also thank the “Free” legal counsel, without all of you this problem might have been resolved years ago and saved a bunch of cats from having to live the short miserable life of a feral. And Mr. Keck - just so you know - there is free legal counsel out there but they don’t fight for our rights - just for the rights of animals. I find it ironic that the very people who say they are trying to help the cats are the same ones who will defend a person who adds to the feral cat population. I don’t believe anyone has the right to put wild animals (neutered or not) into our neighborhoods. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - when it comes to choosing between my family’s health and safety and a feral cat - my family wins every time. Connie Marianetti Ogden

B-B CSD revives a community tradition with Jr. Olympic Torch Run Alumni of Byron-Bergen schools might remember seeing high school runners carrying the Jr. Olympic torch through the streets of the two communities back in the 1970s. The custom began in 1976 to signal the start of the Elementary School’s Jr. Olympics Day celebration, but fell out of practice over the years. The tradition was back again on the evening of June 12, as a relay team of varsity runners from ByronBergen Jr./Sr. High School, escorted by town fire engines, traveled a route around the towns of Byron and Bergen. This was the third year for the new town run, which was organized by Varsity Track Coach Ken Rogoyski and Elementary School teacher Alyson Tardy. This year’s runners, Jerome Spinks, Dayanra Caballero, Siomara Caballero, Anna Hersom, Hope Hersom, Miriam Tardy, Josh Tardy,

Paul McDermott and Travis Lambert, were cheered on by neighbors as each took a turn carrying the torch. The next day, the traveling torch made another appearance at the opening of Jr. Olympics Day at the Elementary School. Students there had been busy studying the cultures of many different countries. Each class represented their chosen country in a parade, and then in a day full of track and field competitions. “The Jr. Olympics Torch Run is a fun way to connect with our community and a good way to get the younger kids excited about participating in the next day’s ceremonies,” said Tardy. “We’d really like to thank the folks at the fire departments for their support. We hope that even more people will take a moment to come out, have fun, and enjoy the show again next year.”

GRQC seeks “Day of Quality” participants Greater Rochester Quality Council Day to improve efficiency Greater Rochester Quality Council, a Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce affiliate, has issued a call for participants for its annual Day of Quality, Thursday, October 4. The Day of Quality deploys teams of GRQC volunteer experts to lead projects aimed at lowering costs, time savings, improved simplification, and greater customer satisfaction. Not-for-profits, businesses, schools, and churches are welcome to apply. More than 25 organizations have benefited, at no cost, since the event began five years ago. New this year is an optional and unique free half-day class on Thursday, July 19, for any interested participants who wish to learn about this event, the quality process and related tools, and proven methods to identify target processes for maximum impact. Interested organizations can attend the class and get help to identify a potential process for deeper GRQC focus. Advance class registration is required by Monday, July 16. St. Luke’s Episcopal Church celebrates community Annual book sale shares the joy of reading The Annual Book Sale at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Brockport is always a success regardless of the number of books that are sold. “People come back to the sale year after year, and we get to talk about what books we’re reading. We have a lot of fun. My favorite part of the sale, though, is seeing the children coming in and picking out their books. Reading is a good foundation for children,” says Bev Walker, speaking on behalf of the Book Sale team and St. Luke’s parish. This year’s sale coincides with the Village of Brockport Sidewalk Sale, but begins one day earlier, Thursday, July 12, and continues through Saturday, July 14. Hours are Thursday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Bag Sale, in which you can stuff as many books in a bag as possible for one price, is Saturday at noon. “We enjoy interacting with our community, and we invite friends and neighbors

An Old Fashioned Fourth celebrated at the Morgan Manning House The Old Fashioned Fourth of July at the Morgan Manning House in Brockport was a sparkling success. It was a time for children of all ages to dress in patriotic attire and decorate their bicycles, scooters, big wheels, carts and strollers to participate in the annual Children’s Parade. This year the parade was the largest yet, with hundreds of children and parents walking around one block. They were led by a Brockport Police car flashing its lights,

with another police car at the end of the parade. After the parade, the 37th Old Fashioned Fourth of July celebrations included songs by the Brockport Community Choir, and music by The Brockport Community Concert Band, and the Brockport Big Band. Children’s games, house tours, popcorn, hot dogs, hamburgers and ice cream made the day very special. Provided information

Sigillo Chiropractic Study Uncovers Key To Preventing Back Pain in Runners A new study examines what may cause chronic back pain in runners and the exercises to help prevent it. The study, published in the Journal of Biomechanics, suggests that runners with weak deep core muscles are at higher risk of developing low back Dr. Christopher J. Sigillo, D.C. pain. And, unfortunately, most people’s deep core muscles aren’t nearly as strong as they should be. To examine the role of the superficial and deep core muscles, researchers used motion detection technology and force-measuring floor plates to estimate muscle movements during activity. What they found is that weak deep core muscles force more superficial muscles like the abs to work harder and reach fatigue faster. When those superficial muscles are doing the work the deep core should be doing, there are often painful consequences. When your deep core is weak, your body is able to compensate in a way that allows you to essentially run the same way. But that increases the load on your spine in a way that may lead to low back pain. Traditional ab exercises with a large range of motion, such as sit-ups or back extensions, will not give you the strong core you need to be a better runner. Instead, exercises such as planks that focus on stabilizing the core, especially on unstable surfaces, are what’s really going to make you a better runner. Northwood play areas dedicated in memory of student Students, staff, administrators, community members and friends gathered in front of Northwood Elementary School on June 26 to pay tribute to Andrew Rohloff, a Northwood student who passed away at the age of 11 in October 2015. Andrew’s family donated money raised through Go Fund Me to establish three basketball/four square courts on the school’s grounds. The play areas also each feature a bench with a plaque in memory of Andrew.

Principal Kirk Ashton thanked Tim Webber, an architect for LaBella Associates, who was instrumental in designing the play areas which were constructed as part of the Capital Project voted on by residents in December 2016. “Andrew lives on in all of our memories,” said Ashton. “It is our individual vision and recounting of his legacy that will keep those special memories with us.” Preston Prince, one of Andrew’s many friends, wrote, “The basketball courts at Northwood give kids the opportunity to experience the gift of Andrew, which is being together with friends and having fun.” Northwood Teacher Laura Mayer said, “When I look at those four-square courts that yellow box just stands out and reminds me of Andrew’s ‘light bulb moments’ in the classroom and his love of learning and people.” She had teachers and students come up to the podium to recite the many lessons Andrew taught them: choose happy, try your best, be loyal to your friends, believe it and you can achieve it, just to name a few.

Greg Rohloff, Andrew’s father, thanked the many families and community members who contributed to the Go Fund Me account, which amounted to nearly $18,000. He also thanked the school district for facilitating the construction of the play areas, and Andrew’s friends for keeping his memory alive. Provided information and photos

•Weaver, James “Jimmy,” age 51, died unexpectedly on June 28, 2018 at his home. He was born February 14, 1967 in Rochester. Jimmy was a well-respected Paramedic in the Rochester region for over 30 years, most recently for 15 years with Monroe Ambulance. He spent his life volunteering and serving his community. Jimmy started out as an Explorer with the Hamlin Fire Department at the age of 14. He transferred to North Greece FD before joining Brockport FD where he rose through the ranks to become the Training Captain, where he was instrumental in the building of the Brockport FD 9/11 Memorial Monument. Most recently, Jimmy served with the Holley FD in the rank of Lieutenant. Jimmy worked for over a decade as a dispatcher for Brockport Fire Department, Brockport Police Department, and Monroe Ambulance. Jimmy always felt that God put him on Earth for a reason and one of those reasons was to help people. He was a proud, loving, devoted father and husband who was always supportive and encouraging of his wife and children. He was an active member of the Brockport Free Methodist Church. Jimmy was predeceased by his mother Sharon Weaver. Jimmy is survived by his wife of 18 loving years together, Rachel Weaver; children, Angela, Riley, Jacob; his devoted Labrador, Charlie; special sister, Audrey Meston; nieces, Emily and Faith; as well as a large extended family. His Funeral Service was held July 2 at the Brockport Free Methodist Church. Bill and Alice were very active in their churches, St. John’s Lutheran (Hamlin) and Redeemer Lutheran (Stuart, Florida). Alice worked beside Bill be it on their farm, at Heise Farm Store, and at Ridgecrest Motel. Bill and Alice retired to Florida but after Bill’s passing, Alice moved to be with her daughter in Arizona. Although she never became a fan of the desert and heat, she loved being with family. Alice is survived by her children, Dale (Sue) Heise, Roy (Marianne) Heise and Sally (Mark) Tripoli. She is also lovingly remembered by six grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren, as well as friends, nieces and nephews. GCC signs Dual Admission Agreements helping maximize college credit transfers Genesee Community College has announced a new Dual Admission Agreement with Canisius College and also a renewed and expanded agreement with Niagara University (NU). Each agreement provides students with guaranteed admissions to both GCC and the four-year transfer institution if all academic requirements are successfully met. Each program includes established articulation maps that detail the courses a student must complete at GCC to earn their associate degree, along with the courses the student must complete to earn a bachelor’s degree at the corresponding four-year institution. “Dual admissions agreements maximize the college credits applicable for transfer for specific programs of study and gives students a predictable seamless transfer process with no surprises,” said Kristen Hargrave, coordinator of GCC’s Transfer Services. “We work tirelessly to initiate

Community message: Contractor Scams: It has come to the attention of the Brockport Police that there are individuals posing as contractors taking advantage of residents. If you are looking to have anything done to your home through a contractor, it is important that the contractor you select will do what he/she says they will do. The Brockport Police has received reports of someone posing as a contractor, doing very little, but taking all the money that would have been paid for the entire job. A few tips to avoid losing your money: First, choose a reputable contractor and do not hesitate to ask for and call references. Second, do not pay for the entire job in the beginning. Set up a contract where you pay in increments as the job progresses. If you pay for a job in its entirety in the beginning, you run the risk of the contractor running away with your money. The agreement covers a wide variety of programs ranging from criminal justice and digital media, to English, chemistry, accounting, finance, marketing and many others. The renewed Niagara University dual agreement was formally executed in February 2018, and establishes guaranteed acceptance at NU upon the successful completion of the corresponding associate degree requirements at GCC. There are 22 associate degree programs at GCC specifically mapped to 55 bachelor’s degree programs within NU’s College of Arts & Sciences, College of Business, College of Education or the College of Hospitality & Tourism. Enrollment into either of these dual admissions programs is open to new students for this fall 2018 semester, which starts at GCC on August 20. GCC graduate walks across commencement stage quietly embracing ‘Beyond Expectations’ As Genesee Community College’s 50th graduating class crammed for finals, one student worked harder, practiced longer, collaborated more and without realizing it - embodied the college’s “Beyond Expectations” brand with quiet dignity and integrity seldom seen. Lifelong Bergen resident, Lauren E. Stumpf, was born in 1994 with Cerebral Palsy, and has relied on a wheelchair for mobility for most of her life. But this challenge never much slowed Lauren down, nor dampened her spirited disposition. With hard work and dedication, she has enjoyed great success. She graduated from Byron-Bergen Schools in 2012 and months later enrolled at GCC with plans to earn a degree in Human Services. Lauren’s determination has always been a mark of her character and integrity, first by proving her doctors wrong by far exceeding their projected life expectancy of just fiveyears. Then at GCC she excelled in her coursework and quickly made friends across campus. Several months before graduation, Lauren decided she wanted to make the ceremony even more special by surprising her family and friends with another significant accomplishment - walking across the Commencement stage to accept her diploma. To that end, Lauren began doing exercises to strengthen her muscles, and she contacted her friends who were enrolled in GCC’s Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program. Together, with guidance from their professors, they helped Lauren by monitoring her progress, educating her about proper posture and exertion levels to ensure she rested appropriately and did not injure herself. As Lauren proudly walked across the stage, the crowd cheered, applauded and many people jumped to their feet with enthusiasm and support. She shook hands with keynote speaker Dr. Kristina Johnson, the new SUNY Chancellor, whose speech included a message about optimism and rising to her own challenge of being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Lauren’s determination inspired the GCC’s admissions office to capture her story in a short video that would illustrate her resolve. It also will inspire others to meet their challenges head-on and realize the many resources available to help make their dreams a reality.
