After fire destroys her business, Karen Anne begins again, bolstered by friends, family and her faith by Doug Hickerson Karen Anne Lowenguth has been in practice as a licensed massage therapist for 18 years. She moved “Karen Anne’s Therapeutic Massage” from her hometown of Hilton to Spencerport’s Barefoot Landing Plaza over three years ago. On Friday, April 6, her first appointment was at 11 a.m., so she turned off her cell phone, planning to sleep in. “I got up at 8 o’clock, turned on my phone, and all of a sudden it boots up,” she said, wondering, “Why do I have 20 text messages, that’s unreal?” She first checked her neighbor Theresa’s message, reading, “I am sorry for your loss; praying for you!” Karen texted back asking if she had the right person and what was she talking about. The reply: “Don’t you know, your plaza’s on fire?” That shock started Karen on an emotional and spiritual journey through the trauma of a devastating loss of her business. The journey includes reflection on God’s plan for her, a slow purposeful recovery still under way, and the “patience of Job.” That journey began when she started professionally, and includes her interrupted plan, grieving her loss, people who helped her, and, finally, focusing on herself for recovery. Spencerport office like “home” Karen uses “Karen Anne” as a business name and says her friends call her “Karen.” She received her license from the Finger Lakes School of Massage in Ithaca. She lived in Hilton where she first set up her practice. When her lease was up, she moved to Spencerport in February, 2015, intending to stay there until retirement. “Spencerport was very good to me. I met a lot of wonderful clients there,” she said, adding that about 95 percent of clients from Hilton had followed her to the new location. “My office was not just an office,” she said, “It was like a home to my clients in a way.” Her office was essentially a waiting room with her desk in it and the treatment room out of sight down the hall. “When you entered, you never felt like you were walking into a clinic or a doctor’s office. It was homey, welcoming. There were comfortable chairs, tea, nice calming music. It was very personal, filled with my special things, memorabilia, antiques. My clients would say it’s like walking into a friend’s house.” When she completed a continuing education class, she would hang the certificate artistically on the wall to show clients she was active in the profession. To God: “Did you really have to go to this extreme?” After receiving the text message, “Don’t you know, your plaza’s on fire?” Karen turned on the TV news and saw the fire. “Part of me was in denial and I didn’t want to go and see it,” she said, until her brother Steve Lowenguth said, “You need to go for closure.” As Karen tells it: I pulled myself together, drove down there and I was devasted; there was nothing left. For the next week and a half, I was just not myself, I was very depressed. I am

generally a pretty strong person. I can get through a lot of things and move forward. But, with this, God really pushed me outside my box. He really had a plan; I just didn’t see it, didn’t understand it, and I said, ‘Did you really have to go to this extreme?’ I was attached to those personal things and had a lot of money invested in my practice. For a couple of weeks, I couldn’t think straight. I had nightmares. If I woke up at night, my first thought was the fire. I would be driving someplace and think, ‘I will stop at my office and check on ... Oh, I can’t … there is no office.’ It took me a long time to just let go. A providential purchase Karen’s new location is 31 Clinton Street in Brockport. “This place fell in my lap at about the same time as the move to Spencerport,” she said. It was purchased as an investment with her boyfriend of 22 years, Dale Robinson. “Dale and my brother Steve were wonderful through all of this. Between the two of them they pulled this place together to rent out as offices, neutralizing it so it did not look like a beauty salon anymore.” Before the work was done on the Brockport facility, the fire occurred in the Spencerport plaza. Now, the Brockport building will become her permanent business location. “He really had a plan; I just didn’t see it, didn’t understand it,” she said about her protest to God for going to “this extreme.” A base of support: friends, family, church “The biggest support I have comes from Dale, my father Bob Lowenguth, my brother Steve, Pastor Jim Fox and my church family at the Living Hope Assembly of God,” Karen said, adding, “I receive a lot of great support in texts and cards from clients and friends.” “Dale has never pushed me to get back to work. He has just been there for me; he has been my rock. A week after the fire, Dale threw me a surprise ‘cheer-me-up party,’” Karen said. He proposed a “date night” which they did not have for a while. Starting the date, he said he forgot to turn out the lights after working on the building. They stopped in and, “All the lights were on, tables were set up with balloons and food, then everyone jumped out shouting, ‘Surprise!’ ” she said. Generous support also came from a chiropractor with whom she had mutually referred clients. “Dr Scott Coykendall generously offered me space for free as long as I needed it,” she said. “I did not take him up on it. I was not mentally or emotionally ready to start again for a good month.” Before starting up, “I need time for me right now.” That lack of readiness to start up right away is clear to Karen as she imagines clients coming in and innocently asking, “What happened? How are you doing?” “I would have to relive that several times a day, five days a week, for the next six weeks,” she said. “I was not ready for that and did not want to talk about it. I feel a little guilty because I was not there for my clients, but if I don’t take care of myself, I won’t be able to take care of them. I need time for me right now.”

Karen Anne Lowenguth has been a licensed massage therapist for 18 years, the last three of them in Spencerport until a disastrous fire in April this year. She sits in the waiting room of her new facility under renovation at 31 Clinton Street in Brockport, expected to open in the near future. Photo by Dianne Hickerson. Her time is filled with settling insurance claims and working to bring the property up to code for the Village’s Certificate of Occupancy. With that certificate, Karen will do what she calls a “soft opening,” and start to see a few people. She looks forward to some of her former clients returning and new ones from Brockport starting. She estimates it will take until April next year to know who her regular clients will be. With some unknowns ahead, she is optimistic. “I wasn’t planning to move here. But, when the fire happened, and once I got my head together, I saw this as a great opportunity. The Lord provided; he made it available. And, He has been blessing me by surrounding me with good people, love and understanding.” Note: For a Westside News report and photos on the Barefoot Landing Plaza fire, go to http://www.westsidenewsny.com/news/2018-04-09/fire-at-barefoot-landingin-spencerport/)

Local Lion receives International Recognition Lions Club members are now celebrating 100 years of service throughout the world. With about 1.5 million members in over 200 countries, the Lions Club members address whatever the local needs may be, ever mindful of the international programs of sight, hearing, diabetes, hunger, the environment and diabetes. To celebrate and to look to the future, each club was encouraged to complete a “legacy” project. Some of the local activities included installation of a wishing well at the Gates Town Hall, a flag pole in Spencerport, a memory garden in Walworth, benches at the Spray Park in Chili, and a lending library at Partyka by the Kendall Lions Club. As the District Centennial Chairman, Lion Jim Schiebel, of Hilton, was recognized by Lions Clubs International for his role in encouraging the efforts in the eight county district known as 20-E1. Remember “Where there is a need, there is a Lion.” To volunteer to take part in community service, contact any Lions Club member. Provided information and photo

Hilton Fire Department to end ambulance service
Greece Ambulance will now serve Hilton-Parma community After 82 years of providing an ambulance to the Hilton-Parma community for the transport of sick and injured persons to the hospital, the Hilton Fire Department has voted to terminate responding to medical emergencies with ambulances, and provide a First Response service to the community. Although this was a difficult decision for many involved, it was necessary to provide the best level of service to the community. Effective June 15, 2018, Greece Ambulance will begin serving the Hilton-Parma Fire District with ambulance transport services. Greece Ambulance will provide one ambulance with a paramedic and a driver within the village to respond to 911 calls. In the event that ambulance is unavailable, Greece will either stage another ambulance in the vicinity surrounding the Hilton-Parma area, or dispatch the next closest ambulance to an emergency call as Mutual Aid. The Hilton Fire Department will still respond to certain priority calls with a non-transport vehicle. Over the last several years it has become more difficult to provide a volunteer crew for the Hilton ambulance. Although many factors come into why this has happened, the reality is that we just do not have enough members to operate a volunteer ambulance service on a 24 hour day, 7 days a week. As a result, many of our calls have been Mutual Aided to another ambulance service for us. This sometimes causes a delay in getting prompt medical care to an individual. The Hilton-Parma Fire District Commissioners and Chiefs met eight years ago to address the issue of ambulance response. At that time, the response rate was fairly good, however there were random times that we could not provide the necessary crew to respond with the ambulance. Several committees were formed to address the issues that we felt were causing this unavailability, and look for alternatives to increase our response. Four years later the Commissioners and Chiefs met again to address the issue of ambulance response, and develop a plan that could be implemented if continued
attempts to increase call response did not succeed. Several plans were developed that included both part-time coverage and full time coverage. However, as the Fire District is unable to bill for medical services, per New York State Law, all available options, except contracting with another ambulance service would have increased fire taxes. In the case of full time paramedic service, it would have doubled the fire district’s operating budget. Through a Request for Proposal (RFP) process the fire district asked surrounding ambulance agencies to submit a proposal to provide ambulance service to the HiltonParma Fire District. Three proposals were received, and reviewed. It was determined that Greece Ambulance provided the best fit for the fire district, and negotiations are underway to secure a contract for services, then begin operations. Going forward, when a resident of the Hilton-Parma Fire District calls 9-1-1 requesting an ambulance, Greece Ambulance will be the primary ambulance provider. If they are unavailable, the next closest ambulance will be dispatched. As Greece ambulance does charge for services, a bill will be generated, and submitted to your insurance company for re-imbursement. Questions or concerns about ambulance transport billing, and transport information can be addressed by Greece Ambulance directly. Questions or information regarding previous transports with Hilton Ambulance can be addressed by the Hilton Fire Department. We would like to thank all the past and present members of the community that have volunteered their time to provide excellent ambulance service to the community. It has been with their dedication and desire that we have been able to remain a Volunteer Ambulance Corps over the last 80 plus years. As emergency medical services continue to evolve, there will no doubt be more changes in the future, with the goal of providing the best pre-hospital medical care to the residents of the Hilton-Parma community, and surrounding areas. submitted by Hilton Parma Fire District

Thank you for footwear donations The outreach team at Spencerport United Methodist Church was awed, amazed and grateful to find over 500 pairs of shoes and footwear left in their collection bin during the month of April. Sixty pairs of heavy boots have been taken to the House of Mercy to assist the homeless when winter chills reach Rochester again. The other donations were sent through Genesee Valley United Methodist Men to the organization funds2orgs.com. There the shoes are sorted again and slightly used shoes are passed on to missions and small businesses in developing nations. Money for the entire load is given based on the weight of the shoes. This year the funds will be distributed to Veterans Outreach Center serving Rochester and 14 western counties and EndHunger.org Society of St. Andrew, gleaning food to feed America’s hungry. Thank you to everyone who left shoes for this ministry. Many lives will be impacted because of your generosity. People of the Spencerport United Methodist Church

To Whom It Should Concern That’s a strange salutation, but if you read on, perhaps it will become clear why it is the only appropriate greeting for this missive. I live in the Village of Brockport, which is in the Town of Sweden, which of course is within the County of Monroe. I have attempted for several years to get anybody within the governmental system to help with a severe feral cat problem in our neighborhood. For the last two or three weeks neighbors and I have intensified our efforts to get anyone to provide a solution or guidance, but to no avail. I live on Frazier Street in the village. Also residing on Frazier Street are several well-established clowders (families) of feral cats. The problem probably got its start from SUNY Brockport students who move home after graduation an release their cats to the wild. There are literally hundreds of feral cats that have made the village their home. They eat bunnies and birds, and use our gardens and yards as litter boxes. The smell is gagging. These cats are sickly, scrawny and mean. They abhor human contact and breed all the time. There are always feral kittens lurking around, causing neighborhood children to attempt to catch them. None have seen a vet or had shots. Their eyes are shrouded with puss and a majority of them walk with limps or spout obvious wounds. Feral cats live a shortened life of about two years unless they are fed and protected by humans. That is occurring on Frazier Street and I am sure other locations within the village. There is a town ordinance which says homeowners may not feed them unless they are also caring for them, which means vets and shots, etc. The town’s animal control people do not deal with feral cats. They only worry about dogs. The village does not even have an animal control person. The mayor of Brockport told me she would have the police department inform the neighbors feeding these cats they must desist. That was a couple of weeks ago and the food bowls still sit on the porch and daily there are half a dozen waiting patiently to be fed. Both the Town of Sweden and the Village of Brockport have done nothing. So, I contacted the County Health Department, not once but twice. I have never spoken to a live human there, but I have left messages and asked for them to return my calls. They have not called. For a time I was catching cats in a hava heart trap and driving them out to the woods miles from Frazier Street and releasing them to the wild. Until I was visited by the ASPCA and told to stop, as what I was doing was a felony. I was told I could continue to trap cats, but only if I drove them to Lollypop Farms, paid for neutering and returned them to where they were originally trapped. There are dozens of feral cats around my property. None of them are mine, but I would need to spend a small fortune if I were to use their suggested method. There are of course other methods available, none of
Westside NeWs service Mart
which are probably legal and none of which are humane. However, I ask; what are we to do when our elected representatives turn blind eyes to our problem? Somebody has to do something. These cats are a health issue if nothing else. This problem is not going to go away and it will get worse quickly as these cats are breeding machines. My neighbors and I are tired of the neglect we have received from both Town and Village officials. They have openly admitted they are powerless. The County Health Department has still not returned my calls. We pay taxes to all three levels of government; village, town and county, but nobody is responsible to deal with feral cats. Why is that? What are we to do? I, personally, have reached a tipping point. If nobody is responsible for this problem, then perhaps I will use a “final solution” on my own. I do not want to do that as I love cats and have owned many throughout the years, but perhaps that is the most humane way to deal with these poor feral animals. Please, somebody offer the residents of the Village of Brockport a solution or guidance at least. Our elected officials don’t seem to care. If you are planning to move to the Vilage of Brockport, be ready for high taxes and feral cats because both are waiting for you. Jonathan A. Keck Brockport
Political party has changed As the 2018 national election season is now upon us, I want to try to inform as many of my fellow Americans as possible about how the 2018 National Republican Party is different from the one that I grew up knowing in the 1950s and 1960s. The major difference is that back then “conservative” Republicans wanted the federal government to spend less than it was on social programs intended to help people including Social Security. Today, however, there are a larger number of “conservative” Republicans (especially in the US Congress, in the conservative-media, and in “conservative-think-tanks”) who go far beyond this and who are, in effect, modern-day cold-hearted “survival-of-the-fittest” Social Darwinists whose goal and plan is to eliminate and abolish all federal government social programs including Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Food Stamps, and College Student Loans. However, they do not want to admit this to the public. Eventually, they will set their sights on Unemployment Insurance Benefits as well. Stewart B. Epstein Rochester

Fully funded grant program accepting applications through June 30 Legend has it that Washington Irving based his “Sleepy Hollow” character Ichabod Crane on a teacher from Kinderhook. There’s a tale in Charleston of an outgoing hermit named Amos who danced for pennies. Local lore in Flushing says a bear attack was thwarted by a man wielding his own crutch. In Fly Creek, Honey Joe Road is thought to be named for a bootlegger who concealed his wine in beehives. These intriguing stories – and many others across the Empire State – are being recognized through a creative roadside marker program launched by The William G. Pomeroy Foundation in partnership with the New York Folklore Society. Dubbed the Legends & Lore Grant Marker Program, the initiative was established to promote cultural tourism and commemorate legends and folklore in New York. “From curious characters and elaborate hoaxes to strange sightings and tall tales,
the Legends & Lore Program showcases unusual stories rooted in the historical past,” says Paula Miller, Executive Director of The William G. Pomeroy Foundation. “We’ve fully funded more than 35 of these specially designed markers across New York and we’re looking forward to receiving more grant applications.” The Legends & Lore program is currently accepting applications on www. wgpfoundation.org. The deadline to apply is Saturday, June 30. Municipalities and charitable 501(c)(3) organizations in New York are welcome to apply for grants. Local historical organizations or municipal historians will often apply on behalf of property owners. For information about all of The William G. Franko Goldman, Shelley Hanson, Lerner and Loewe, Sammy Nestico, Arthur Pryor, and Jan Van der Roost, among others. The Gazebo Band was founded in 1984 and was first directed by Hilton Music Educator, Gordon Bascom. The original group of approximately a dozen players performed for the Village of Hilton Centennial celebration and a larger group performed for the dedication of the Gazebo at Centennial Park. The band’s current conductor, Dr. Charles Schmidt, is in his tenth year of directing the band. Mary Reazor, the last remaining charter member of the band, functions as the band’s manager, music librarian, and lead trombonist. The Gazebo Band is an all-volunteer organization that relies primarily on donations from the community. The band is comprised of many dedicated musicians from across Monroe and Orleans counties, who rehearse from March 1 through July in order to make the free summer concerts possible. In recent years, the band has expanded its schedule to include a fall rehearsal season and holiday concerts. From its beginning, the band’s primary purpose has been to give area adult musicians a place to enjoy their musical gifts and at the same time share them with the broader community. Airbnb reaches home sharing tax agreement in Orleans County Airbnb has finalized a new tax agreement with Orleans County, which will allow the company to collect and remit hotel and motel room tax on behalf of the local host community. With this new agreement, Airbnb will now collect and remit taxes in 21 counties statewide, including Monroe County. Through its existing agreements in New York State, Airbnb has remitted over $1.7 million in hotel and motel room taxes since reaching the first agreement with Tompkins County in July 2016. Airbnb remitted over $1 million in hotel and motel room tax revenue in 2017 alone. “Airbnb is an economic mobilizer for everyone, from families sharing their home to make ends meet, to the small businesses benefitting from more guests shopping and eating locally -- and now to Orleans County, which will join 20 other county governments statewide in receiving a new source of tax revenue from home sharing,” said Josh Meltzer, head of New York Public Policy for Airbnb. “We hope this latest agreement will also serve as yet another clear example of the economic potential of home sharing in every corner of the Empire State.” Airbnb will now collect and remit the hotel and motel room tax on taxable Airbnb
stays in Orleans County. By doing so, Airbnb will make the process seamless for hosts while providing a valuable source of revenue to Orleans County. “Orleans County Tourism welcomes the effort that Airbnb is making to ensure homes hosting visitors in our county are compliant and contributing to the local occupancy tax. The taxes collected by Airbnb help strengthen and expand the advertising programs we use to attract even more tourists, increasing the revenues for our businesses and taxable sales for our county. It is a great fit, as many of our recent promotions read, “Unplug and Reconnect to What Matters in … Orleans County, NY,” said Dawn L. Borchert, Orleans County Director of Tourism. “This agreement between Orleans County and Airbnb is a win-win for everyone involved. The ease of finding a short-term rental for visitors, simplifying the occupancy tax collection for the property owners and the certainty of receiving the tax by the county. I’m hoping to see an increase of tourism in Orleans with this agreement, and therefore, an increase in revenue for the county,” said Kimberly DeFrank, Orleans County Treasurer. Provided information

Still a huge selection of vegetable plants COUPON
The Brockport Rotary Club members were vastly entertained by guest speaker Eric Weatherbee at a recent meeting. He is a farmer and author who lives on a family farm in Clarendon where he raises dairy heifers. The farm has been in the family for over 100 years and it figures hugely in his life – connecting all of his “hats.” He would like to set up a small processing plant and run the farm as it would have been in the 1940s. Early on he found he also liked writing and has since published three books of short stories and poems and is working on a novel. He owns The Book Center in Spencerport and is planning on eventually moving it to the farm. He also has done readings for many groups such as the Albion library. He read two of his works to the Rotarians: “The Portrait,” a wonderfully involving and slightly supernatural short story set in the Civil War era. Eric felt the portrait in the photo was a close depiction to the hero of the tale. For an encore, he read “The Lavender Latrine,” a short and very humorous poetic depiction of a Porta Potty set sail on a flooded river. (By the way, he is great at rhyming.) He and his wife Betty, whom he credits with considerable editing, want to make their farm a destination by including lots of interesting items for sale, sights to see and things to do. (That is the entrepreneur part.) Sitting l-r: George Dahl, presenter Eric Weatherbee, standing l-r Club president Eileen Whitney, Betty Weatherbee. Brockport Rotary Club meets most Thursdays at the Brockport Bill Gray’s Restaurant at 6:15 p.m.

A Special Treat for Dads and Grandpas on Fathers Day Fathers and Grandfathers receive free admission to the New York Museum of Transportation on Father’s Day when accompanied by a youth ages 3 through 12. The museum’s huge model railroad is in operation, sure to give dads and their youngsters fresh ideas for their own home layouts. Throughout the hands-on museum, visitors can actually climb into the cab of a steam locomotive and ring the bell in a trolley car. Highway and horse-drawn vehicles, models, photos, and smaller artifacts bring transportation history to life. The gallery features a short film depicting the Rochester Subway. And, there’s a well-stocked gift shop too. Admission is only $4 adults/ seniors, $3 youths 3 through 12. The New York Museum of Transportation is open Sundays only, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and group tours during the week can be arranged by appointment. The museum is located at 6393 East River Road, just 20 minutes from downtown Rochester and easily reached from Exit 11 off I-390. Visit www.nymtmuseum.org for information. Provided photo.

Bill Andrews attends last Village Board Meeting as Deputy Mayor A small farewell party marked the end of Bill Andrews’ six-year stint as village trustee and deputy mayor. Board members and attendees complimented him on his many years of service to the Village government and to the larger community (some call him Mr. Brockport). He indicated that he has enjoyed those years participating in, teaching and writing about government. However, as he said in a recent Suburban News article, it is time to step down. He will continue to write (a seventh book just went to print and is coming out soon) and will return to a previously held position - that of village historian. Shown (l-r) Mayor Margay Blackman, former Sweden Town Supervisor Rob Carges, Village Clerk Leslie Morelli, Man of the Hour Bill Andrews, Trustees Annie Crane and John LaPierre, Pro-Brockport Chair Susan Smith, Trustee Kathy Kristansen, former trustee and Park Committee Chair Hanny Heyen and Parks Committee Chair Linda Ketchum. Sigillo Chiropractic It’s A Stretch
One trait we’d all like to preserve for as long as possible is our flexibility, the ability to bend and move as required by the demands of daily life and those activities we enjoy. Regular chiropractic treatment is one way to achieve that goal. But something you can do on your own to Dr. Christopher J. Sigillo, D.C. reach that goal is to stretch regularly. On your next visit to your chiropractor, discuss your daily activities and your recreational preferences. He or she can prescribe a set of stretches that will help. Stretching helps with flexibility and reduces the risk of tears in muscles and tendons. It can also help with recovery after an activity. You don’t have to be a tri-athlete to benefit from stretching. Before cleaning the house or the yard, shoveling snow – just to name a couple of relatively mundane chores most of us have to tackle – you should stretch a little. Additionally, increased flexibility of the neck, shoulder and upper back can improve respiratory function. It is also not a bad idea to “cool down” after fairly rigorous activity with some light stretching. When muscles and tendons are warm they stretch a little more easily. Also talk with your chiropractor about the right and wrong ways to stretch. Presented as a service to the community by

GTC Quarterly Board Meeting to be held June 14 The Genesee Transportation Council (GTC), the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the Genesee-Finger Lakes Region, will hold one of its regularly scheduled board meetings on Thursday, June 14, at 8:30 a.m. at the Brighton Town Hall, 2300 Elmwood Avenue in Brighton, Monroe County. The meeting agenda is available on the GTC website www.gtcmpo.org. The United States Department of Transportation requires every metropolitan area with a population over 50,000 to have a designated MPO to qualify for receipt of federal highway and transit funds. GTC is the MPO for the nine-county region, which includes Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Wayne, Wyoming, and Yates counties. The GTC Board consists of elected officials from the nine counties, the City of Rochester, and representatives of other local, regional, state and federal transportationrelated agencies. The board provides direction to the staff, establishes policy, and approves all activities and major work products, including the Long Range Transportation Plan, Unified Planning Work Program, and Transportation Improvement Program which detail how federal transportation funding is used in the greater Rochester planning area. Each board meeting is open to the public. A public forum is included at the beginning of the meeting to allow for public comment on meeting agenda items before the GTC Board takes action.

Batavia Rotary Club Fly-in Breakfast to be held June 17 The Batavia Rotary Club’s popular annual Fly-In Breakfast is scheduled for Sunday, June 17, 7 a.m. to noon at the Genesee County Airport, 4701 Saile Drive, Batavia. As in years past, the event is expected to attract more than 1,500 guests from across Western New York, as well as numerous private aircraft pilots from across the state and beyond. Residents throughout Western New York are invited to enjoy breakfast, meet the pilots, and view their aircraft. The Fly-In Breakfast menu will feature sausage, eggs and omelets, pancakes, and beverages. Adult tickets are $8. Tickets for children ages four through 12 are $5. Children under the age of four are admitted free. Tickets for the event may be obtained from any member of the Batavia Rotary Club or at the door. Saile Drive is located just north of the City of Batavia and the Batavia exit of the New York State Thruway, off Route 98. Over the years, members of the Batavia Rotary Club have turned the event into a well-oiled machine. Co-Chair Edmund Leising and a team of almost 50 Rotarians will check people in, cook and serve a delicious breakfast, and clean tables after guests leave, all quickly and efficiently. The event attracts families celebrating Father’s Day, people coming from church, or area residents wanting to enjoy breakfast in an unusual location. The event also attracts many people curious about aircraft. Guests can see airplanes landing and taking off up close, and talk with the pilots. Proceeds from the event benefit the Batavia Rotary Club’s youth programs. The Batavia Rotary Club, founded in 1919, provides financial and volunteer support to numerous community service organizations, with a special emphasis on service to young people. Spencerport’s Erin Coykendall named Female MaxPreps Semper Fidelis High School Athlete of the Year Junior Erin Coykendall from Spencerport High School was named the female athlete of the year for the 2nd Annual MaxPreps Semper Fidelis High School Athlete of the Year Award, presented by the United States Marine Corps. Coykendall is a part of the lacrosse, soccer, basketball and bowling teams. “MaxPreps congratulates Erin Coykendall on being named High School Athlete of the Year,” said Andy Beal, Founder and President of MaxPreps. “High school sports are designed to build character and foster teamwork and a competitive spirit in our nation’s young people. The MaxPreps Semper Fidelis High School Athlete of the Year represents those outstanding qualities that make not just a great athlete, but more importantly a fine citizen. MaxPreps is proud to honor this fine student-athlete in collaboration with the United States Marine Corps.” Coykendall, an integral part of Spencerport’s lacrosse team, is in a class of her own. Verbally committing to Northwestern before she entered high school, Coykendall has been filling up the stat sheet and breaking school records since she joined the varsity lacrosse team in seventh grade. She currently holds the school records for Most Points in a Career (526), Most Goals in a Career (279), Most Assists in a Career (261), Most Assists in a season (71-2016), Most Draw Controls in a Career (398), Most Assists in a Game (8-2018), and Most Goals in a Game (8-2015). Coykendall is also a soccer standout, helping the Spencerport soccer team win two state titles. This spring, Coykendall picked up her eleventh varsity letter. “Erin has grown with every season, every game and every play,” stated head lacrosse coach Patricia Condon. “She is a leader by example, teacher of the game and is the most impressive player I have ever had the privilege to coach and/or watch. Erin’s knowledge of the sport is her strongest asset and she is able to teach those around her. She studies game film, identifies areas she can improve and works on them in practice and on her own. For Erin, lacrosse is more than a game - it is her passion and it drives her to excel on and off the field.” For Condon, there is no one more deserving of this award than Coykendall. “There are no words and no better feeling for a coach than to watch a player give everything she has to a sport/craft and be recognized for her efforts. I see the behind the scenes stuff of Erin watching film and
studying herself and the game, passing against a wall, shooting on open nets in her backyard, researching the best stick and traveling the country to play in the most elite environments. I see all of the time, commitment and dedication it takes to be as good as she is. She didn’t just pick up a stick and decide to be good, she had to work at it. I couldn’t be more proud of her.” Coykendall isn’t only a standout on the field, but also in school and in the community. In school, Coykendall is a 4.0 GPA student, a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society and the CHOICES Program. Through this program, she takes part in leadership around the school and volunteer opportunities in the community. Coykendall is also a volunteer assistant coach for youth lacrosse and soccer teams in her town. She finds time in her busy schedule to attend practices each week to mentor young athletes. A big animal lover, Coykendall volunteers with an animal rescue group, fostering and often bottle-feeding puppies and kittens. Staff Sergeant Todd Fetzer, of the New York United States Marine Corps presented Coykendall with the MaxPreps Semper Fidelis Athlete of the Year trophy during a school sports assembly. “The United States Marine Corps fights and wins our Nation’s Battles. Through the MaxPreps High School Athlete of the Month program, we recognize students that embody the Marine Corps’ fighting spirit and tenacity to overcome adversity,” stated 1st Lt. Johnny Henderson. “These student athletes have proven to rise to the challenges they face, both on and off the field. We honor only the best and we take pride in recognizing those that rise above and have a positive influence in their community.” MaxPreps picks one female and one male athlete each month to be named with the honor of High School Athlete of the Month, presented by the United States Marines Corps. MaxPreps sends out emails to all of their members of their site about nominating an athlete for the award. There are also links on MaxPreps.com for anyone to nominate a deserving athlete for this award. Nominations may be submitted by a coach, parent, peer, or teacher. MaxPreps then selects the most well-rounded athletes that match the qualities that are also found in the United States Marines Corps, like bravery, dedication, perseverance, personal sacrifice for others and being a positive influence in one’s community.
