Volunteers stitch quilts for those in need around the world Quilts for Christ warm many by Grace Griffee For nearly a decade, a group of about 15 volunteers have been churning out over 60 handmade
quilts a year and then turning them over to Lutheran World Relief so that they can be sent overseas. Handmade quilts have long been collected and cherished - and are pricey to purchase - but these women think nothing of creating these

works of art, boxing them up and donating them to people around the world. “It’s like an old-fashioned quilting bee,” said Lois Kane, who heads up the Quilts for Christ group. Volunteers work on the squares at home and then the quilts are assembled during two monthly meetings. “We have a meeting in the afternoon and then one in the evening for those who work during the day,” said Kane. Working with donated fabric, the squares are stitched together in coordinating colors and patterns with the only criteria being that they measure 60 x 80”. “The mission isn’t fussy about how they look, but our ladies are,” said Kane. Sheets are purchased for the backing and huge rolls of fiberfill for the filling. Before the finished quilts are boxed up, a dedication ceremony is held during which all of the quilts are draped over the church pews and blessed. This year, instead of transporting the quilts to a site in Downtown Rochester, St. Paul’s Church served as the drop off location for churches in the Rochester area,
Buffalo area and everywhere in between. Collectively, around 1,400 quilts were packed into a large truck that was headed to the Lutheran World Relief warehouse in Baltimore, Maryland. “We have a spacious parking lot and good storage, so we’re hoping to serve as the drop off in years to come,” said Kane. In 2014, Lutheran World Relief sent 408,245 quilts to 19 countries, including Armenia, Iraq, Jordan, Nicaragua, Philippines, Serbia and Tanzania. The organization focuses on long term solutions to poverty and emergency operations, such as helping with recovery efforts after the Nepal earthquake. “The quilts go to people who have nothing and fulfill a basic need,” said Kane. In addition to being a cozy, clean bed cover, the quilts are used as a baby carrier, tied around a mother’s back; a market display, spread on the ground and piled with vegetables; a sack for transporting those goods to market; a sunshade; or a shawl. “Our hope is that the recipients will feel the love of Christ through the warmth of our quilts,” said Kane.
the church pews at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hilton and blessed. While the group makes the majority of quilts for mission efforts overseas, occasionally they will give one to someone who is ill or in need locally. The quilts are never sold. G. Griffee photos.

Brockport students design unique bookmarks The Kiwanis Club of Brockport sponsored this year’s “Read Around the World” program at the Seymour Library. Students in Brockport elementary grades kindergarten through fifth were invited to participate in a bookmark contest which was judged by library staff and members of the Kiwanis Club. From the designs submitted, winners for each grade level were chosen and the winning designs printed and distributed to library patrons. There were 170 entries in this year’s contest.
On the day the winners are announced, all students receive a soft cover book and the winners receive a hard cover book. All books are appropriate to the students’ ages. The Kiwanis Club then sponsors an ice cream social which this year was enjoyed by 200 students and parents. This year’s winners were: Kindergarten and first - grade - Jose Angel Vazquez III, second and third grade - Josephine Belde and fourth and fifth grade - Laura Bishop.
An ice cream social hosted by members of the Kiwanis Club of Brockport recognized the bookmark design contest participants in this year’s “Read Around the World” project. Above, students listen as Kiwanians read some of their favorite stories. Provided photo.

Mary Anne Fischer, Executive Director, addressed a crowd of around a hundred at the Hospice of Orleans annual organizational meeting and volunteer recognition event April 30 at the Medina United Methodist Church. Fischer applauded the work of the Hospice volunteers and reported that in 2014, more than 150 volunteers contributed over 6,800 hours to the Hospice mission of providing comfort, compassion and expertise to Orleans County residents facing serious illness. She attributed a cost savings of over $110,000 last year to volunteer involvement. “Our mission would be impossible without you – our volunteers.” Fisher also detailed key accomplishments of 2014. These included implementing changes in employee medical and dental coverage, evaluation of the agency’s cost structure and saving over $350 in postage alone with increased use of email and online volunteer scheduling. “Hospice of Orleans has grown from an average daily census of 5 to 17,” she reported. Agency priorities for 2015 include implementing the new Pet Peace of Mind program, strengthening the infrastructure of the agency to ensure its long term viability, investigating a group purchasing program with other area hospice programs, and continuing to educate our community about the benefits of hospice. Don Algeo received Hospice’s Volunteer of the Year Award. Volunteer Coordinator Christine Fancher noted that “Don is always willing to help. He volunteers at the Residence four or more hours a week and goes to a patient’s home and prepares meals twice a week.” Algeo also serves on the Hospice of Orleans Board of Directors. Jerome Pawlak received the Mary Janet Sahukar Award, named for Hospice of Orleans’ founding director. The award recognizes a community member who understands, embraces and supports the organization’s mission in sacrificial ways. “Jerome always says ‘yes’ when we ask if we can sell bouquets at his Save-a-Lot Stores or ask for any other assistance.” said Mary Anne Fischer as she presented the award. Jerome told the group that his father had been a supporter of Hospice since its inception and that he is proud to carry on that tradition. Merrill Grinnell Funeral Home received the Hospice Business/Civic Award for their role in developing and supporting the Classic Car Show for the past two years. A Special Recognition Award was presented to Leonard Oakes Estate Winery for their many contributions
Each year during the month of May, American Legion Auxiliary members distribute red crepe paper poppies in exchange for donations. The donations assist disabled veterans, their families, VA hospitals and starting this year active military in need of assistance. The poppy became a symbol of the sacrifice of lives in war and represented the hope that none had died in vain. The poppies are made by disabled veterans. Look for auxiliary members around the village of Spencerport and in other towns and villages. Wear your poppy on Memorial Day, and throughout the month of May.

to fundraising for Hospice. Wendy Wilson accepted the award for the Winery. Her voice filled with emotion, as she said, “I can’t thank Hospice enough for taking care of one of our long time, much loved employees this past year. Two of our employees are receiving services now. Hospice staff has been incredible! Hospice has been near and dear to our family and we are happy to support them in any way we can.” John Girvin was honored for completion of his term on the Hospice of Orleans Board of Directors. Village of Brockport TRASH COLLECTION NOTICE
As students prepare to move out at the end of the year, refuse left behind is an issue that Village residents have dealt with on an annual basis. This year, the Village is taking a proactive stance, to ensure that the community will remain safe and sanitary during the move out period. Beginning Monday, May 12, 2015 Village Code Enforcement Officers will begin patrolling neighborhoods to make note of addresses where refuse items are being piled up. At the end of each property’s regular garbage collection day, the Village of Brockport Department of Public Works will be making rounds to clean up any items left behind. Please note that this is not a free pick up. The property owner will be billed for the collection of any refuse by the Department of Public Works. To ensure this does not take place, contact your refuse collection company to verify what they will pick up and make sure any items left behind are brought back from the road. Please keep all refuse in containers with adequately sealed lids and ensure that all refuse is placed neatly at the curb for collection. Do not place any refuse in the road or block any sidewalks. Refuse may not be placed curbside more than 24 hours prior to scheduled collection. Electronic items will not be picked up by refuse collectors. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the Building/Code Enforcement Department at (585) 637-5300 Ext. 14 Thank you for doing your part to help our Village remain clean for everyone! Hamlin-Clarkson Herald and Suburban News West Edition - May 10, 2015 9
Brockport’s Steve Appleton will be featured Saturday, May 16, during the final reading of this season’s Words on the Verge Reading Series at A Different Path Gallery, 27 Market Street in Brockport. Appleton is passionate about creating all-inclusive, artistic events which draw together diverse groups of people in a participation-charged, energetic atmosphere. Appleton will choose his readings from work he has written himself, says Christine Green, who organizes, hosts and promotes Words on the Verge. “He read some at last month’s Open Mike and was a huge hit,” Green says. Appleton’s prose and non-fiction is inspired by the environment, spiritual topics and community service. Words on the Verge readings are free and open to the public. The May 16 reading runs from 5 to 7 pm.
Katherine Weston, owner of A Different Path Art Gallery, began literary readings when the gallery opened in 2010. At first, Tom Holmes hosted and organized monthly readings, but Green took over the duties when Holmes moved away. Words on the Verge is supported by donations of funds from business leaders and private citizens in the Brockport community. Green explains that writers come to the series with a variety of backgrounds which include those who have several published works under their belt, as well as emerging writers just breaking into the scene. Featured writers have read poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, journalism, personal essays, memoir and flash fiction. Following the May 16 Steve Appleton reading, Words on the Verge will take a summer break during June, July and August, and will return for the fall-winter reading series in September.
Plan ahead if you want to try straw bale gardening by Kristina Gabalski If you want to try growing your vegetables in a straw bale this year, remember you need to work to condition the bale before you plant it - about 2-3 weeks ahead of planting time. You can plant the bale with seeds or transplants, but it’s important to set the bale out a few weeks before planting and keep it well watered so the inner straw will begin to break down. Experts recommend adding three cups of organic fertilizer - blood meal, compost, and cottonseed meal are three examples - every
other day before watering to carry the fertilizer down into the bale. Conditioning creates a moist, nutrient-rich rooting environment in the bale. The best straw to use is wheat straw and make sure it is straw and not hay - hay typically contains lots of weed seeds. It’s recommended that the bale be placed with binding strips on the side to make it easier for water and fertilizer to penetrate - but the process will work either way. Make sure your bale or bales are placed in a sunny spot where they can be easily watered.

Also, give the bales a chance to cool before planting - if they have heated up during the conditioning phase - just stick your hand in the bale to check. When you are ready to plant, dig out a section of straw and add compost or high quality potting mix on top of the straw and gently water the bale before planting. Keep the bale well watered as it will dry out quickly. Mold/mushroom growth on the bale itself is normal. If your plants need support, place stakes at either end of the bale and use them for stringing up support, or can place the bales near a fence or shed to help with support. The bale will continue to decompose during the gardening season. What’s left can be used next year as a source of organic material to build up your garden soil - as long as the plants you grew stayed healthy. If there was any sign of disease, dispose of both the plants and the straw.

Sigillo Chiropractic Don’t Mask a Back Problem With Drugs
With the array of over-the-counter medication that’s available, and with people’s time always pressed, the temptation is strong to “treat” aches and pains with some sort of tablet. Over the long haul, treating the symptom of a problem, rather than the problem Dr. Christopher J. Sigillo, D.C. itself can put you in jeopardy of injury. The results of a study published a few years ago in the medical journal Neurology found that the subjects who regularly used pain relievers were significantly more at risk for developing chronic pain. Without addressing the underlying cause of pain, the situation is never going to improve.

Chiropractic treatment is well recognized as an effective treatment for lower back pain in particular, and for addressing other types of pain. At the center of chiropractic philosophy is the belief that when the body is functioning properly it is capable of curing many of its ills. Key to the proper functioning is the alignment of all the vertebrae of the spine. The nerves that control the body’s functions pass through those individual vertebrae. If the nerves are under pressure or impaired in any way by vertebra that is out of line, the result can be dysfunction or pain in the part of the body controlled by that nerve. Chiropractic treatment does not involve the use of drugs or surgery. Talk with a chiropractor about ways you might benefit from treatment. Presented as a service to the community by

AMERICAN ACCENTS, LLC
Trillium is a native perennial flowering wildflower plant which grows in woodsy areas that are undisturbed. It’s named for its tri-count of petals and leaves. Some species of trillium are listed as threatened or endangered and picking them is discouraged. The red/maroon one photographed above grows in a swampish area in southern Ogden. The more common - but equally beautiful -- white trillium blooms at the same time as the more rare variety. Provided photo by Pete Barbeto.
