Stamps and coins in spotlight during national show May 15-17 The Rochester Philatelic Association is once again sponsoring the ROPEX National Stamp Show and Coins, taking place May 15-17 in Canandaigua. The exhibition is being held at a new venue, the Greater Canandaigua Civic Center, located at 250 North Bloomfield Road, off NY Route 332 and the New York State Thruway. Hours are Friday 11-6, Saturday 10-5 and Sunday 10-3. Daily admission is $2 for adults, youth under 18 free, and free for everyone on Sunday. The show’s theme is Elvis Presley and his famous song, “Return to Sender.” Twenty dealers from across the northeast will be selling and buying stamps, coins, covers, post cards, collections and supplies. Over 40 competitive exhibits from the U.S., Canada, China and Pakistan will vie for medals and special awards. ROPEX is hosting the national convention of the Auxiliary Markings Club (http://www.postal-markings.org). A number of specialty society meetings will be held throughout the three days, most open to any interested collector. Special youth activities take place on
Saturday and Sunday. Winners of the annual kids’ Design-A-Stamp competition will be announced on Sunday at 1 p.m. Members of the public are welcome to bring in their stamps, collections and related items for a free informal appraisal of their holdings by experienced RPA members. Those interested in selling may inquire at dealer booths. Three special displays will be in the Court of Honor. “World Rarities and Uniquities” as its title implies features rare and unusual material seldom seen, including the smallest item ever posted in the U.S. mail, a Hindenburg crash cover and a postal commemorative from the 1953 Mount Everest summit expedition. The awards buffet banquet is scheduled for Saturday, May 16 beginning at 6 p.m. at Schooner’s Restaurant, 407 Lakeshore Drive. Tickets are $25 and must be reserved by May 9. Jack Annable singled to left to drive in the first run of the contest. After the Titans tied the game 1-1 with a run in their half of the fifth, Hilton took advantage of two throwing errors and some clutch hitting to score four runs in the fifth for a 5-1 lead. Matt Butts led off with a walk and was sacrificed to second base by Brandon Bourg. Justin Resseguie laid down another bunt, but the throw to first was in the dirt allowing the first run to score. Metzger followed with an RBI single to center and took second on the throw. Hendry then had an RBI single, stole second and went to third on the second error of the inning. He crossed the plate on an RBI single by Brett Turpyn. Hilton tacked on two more runs in the sixth. Freshman David Stirpe led off with a single and went to second on a wild pitch. After Butts was hit by a pitch, Stirpe and pinch runner Zach Thorp pulled off a fake-bunt doublesteal. Stirpe scored on a sacrifice fly RBI by Bourg before Thorp crossed the plate on an RBI single to right by Metzger. The Titans scored twice in the top of the seventh, but Metzger came on in relief to get the final outs and the save. Hendy allowed just five hits and three walks while striking out two during his start to earn the win, which gave the Cadets their tenth win of the season against four losses.

by Warren Kozireski The 66th Day of Champions held May 4 at the Riverside Convention Center recognized five people who have ties to the west side of Monroe County. Roberts Wesleyan three-sport star and Brockport High School graduate Marissa Sell was given the Amateur Athlete Award after she won the Kathy Freese Award, given annually to the top NCCAA women’s basketball player in the nation. The two-time NCAA First Team All-American and 2013 East Region Player of the Year became the only player in school history with more than 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. She finished her career seventh at Roberts in scoring and first all-time in rebounds. College at Brockport Kinesiology, Sport Studies and Physical Education professor Dr. Lauren Liebermann was named one of three “Hometown Heroes” for her efforts in launching Camp Abilities - a weeklong camp each summer for the past 20 years where blind and visually impaired children and teens work with student counselors using sports and recreational activities. The program has now expanded into 23 different camps around the United States and world including in Ireland and Guatemala. Former Spencerport High three-sport star and Golden Eagle assistant women’s soccer coach Gail Mann was honored with the Jean Giambrone Community Service Award. The current head coach at Nazareth College since 1993 spent five years at Brockport prior. She played soccer, basketball and softball while in a Rangers uniform before attending Cortland. The final two western connections won’t actually arrive until August, but Harvey Anderson Scholarship Award winners Sydney Cowie and Christian Hollister both will attend the College at Brockport this fall. Both from Perry High School, Cowie set a school record for kills and blocks while earning Livingston County Division II All-Star and All-Greater Rochester honors. She will likely be a defensive specialist for the Golden Eagles this fall. Hollister will try out for the football team after the five-year starter earned Livingston County and AllGreater Rochester honors three times each.

Kendall took advantage of four walks, four wild pitches and three errors to plate six runs in the third inning on their way to a 17-4 girls softball win over Holley. Holley jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Brianna Vanameron had a one-out single to left, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Heather Winkley then surprised everyone with a two-out RBI bunt single between first base and the mound. The Eagles countered in their half of the inning with three runs. After loading the bases, Kali Haskins drove in one run with a two-out infield single and Marisa Hanlon followed with a two-RBI single to left. Kendall broke the game open in the third with six runs as Hannah Evans drew a bases-loaded walk to plate one run and Taylor Kingsbury hit into an RBI fielder’s choice. A third run scored on an error and the other three runs came across on wild pitches. The Hawks plated two runs in the fourth as Anna Brasted had a leadoff single and went to second as Vanameron was hit by a pitch. Brooklynn Bartholomew walked to
load the bases before Brianna Barber stroked a two-RBI single to center. The Eagles made it 13-3 in their half of the fifth inning as Kacey Menge, who was earlier hit by a pitch, scored on a strikeout-wild pitch, Carley Lester drove in a run with a single followed by Brianna Jurs and Lester scoring on wild pitches. Holley’s final run came in the sixth as Vanameron reached on an infield single, stole second and, after a Bartholomew infield single, pulled off a double steal putting runners on second and third. Vanameron scored on a fielder’s choice bunt. The Eagles finished the contest in the sixth scoring four runs. Sarah Pearson hit into a bases-loaded fielder’s choice to drive in Becca Pearson, who had walked. Lester was hit by a pitch to plate the second run before Skye Brice pushed across the third with a walk. The game ended as Blacey Bakutis was hit by a pitch to drive in the final run. The victory was Kendall’s third of the season with three games remaining in the regular season.
