Capen Hose Co. 4 Fire Museum – a hidden treasure welcoming the public by Doug Hickerson photos by Dianne Hickerson Driving by the Capen Hose Co. 4 Fire Museum some weeks ago, there was a hand-made sign on the lawn announcing, “OPEN HOUSE, Sunday, 1 - 4 pm.” Located at Brockport’s busiest intersection at Main and Fair Streets and Park Avenue, the stately white 1905 firehouse stands behind the “September 11, 2001” memorial. Until three years ago, when the last active fire engine was removed, it was one of the oldest active firehouses in Monroe County and Western New York. I recalled the museum had been open on many occasions with its founder, “Scottie” Warthman, proudly guiding tours and I was fascinated then. Scottie died tragically in an auto accident in 2003. In recent years, it has appeared closed up and inaccessible, until the inviting sign appeared. Dianne and I wanted to see this hidden treasure and contacted Norm Knapp for a tour. We found the collection throughout many rooms to be in immaculate condition, seemingly just dusted, polished and proud. We met with Norm, Don Ennis, and Toby Unger who are among the most active of the museum’s custodians. The Capen Hose Co. 4 is no longer an active firefighting company since the fire district was established in 2006. The firehouse and its contents now serve as a museum with about 14 people who are supporting members. About eight years ago, the Capen Hose Co. 4 reorganized when Lloyd Hugelmaier was elected president and Don Ennis became vice president. Don, Toby, and Norm have deep roots in firefighting in Brockport. Don worked for Kodak 29 years and was a firefighter with Capen Hose from the 70s until early 90s, when he moved to fire police for many years, then retired. Toby owned several businesses in the
The older helmet (right) reads “T.C. Corn, Engine #3, foreman.” It goes back to the Thomas Corn Engine and Hose Co. that operated the hand pumper. Thomas Corn was a prominent citizen and one of the early presidents of the village. “Foreman” was another word for “Captain.” The newer helmet (left) was worn by the assistant fire chief called an “Assistant Engineer” (word at top) in the late 1800s or early 1900s. Brockport area. He joined Capen Hose at 19 years old in 1971 and was a firefighter until the late 80s. Norm has been retired from Kodak for 15 years; he spent 32 years as career lieutenant in the Kodak fire department. His father and uncles were members of Capen Hose, so, at 18 years old, it seemed “natural” to join, he said. The three keepers of the museum said, “We would like the public to come and enjoy what we have in the museum.” Those interested in scheduling a tour can call Don at 637-5086. Or, come by on August 19 or September 16, two remaining Sundays when the sign will appear again on the lawn announcing, “Open House Sunday, 1 – 4 pm.” On September 11, a morning and evening service are planned with traditional daylong vigil as in past years at the “September 11, 2001” memorial park in front of Capen Hose Co. 4. More information will be provided as the event approaches. See more photos on our website westsidenewsny.com
This steam pumper was purchased after a major fire in 1877 destroyed much of the business district on Market Street. There had been little or no fire protection for the growing village. Purchased from Silsby Mfg Co. in Seneca Falls, NY, it was in service until the early 1900s. Improved over the Hand Pumper, it was steampowered and horse-drawn.
Norm Knapp explains the workings of a replica dispatch desk from early fire warning systems. The red call box (adjacent photo) is part of the intricate system to alert firefighters of a fire. The call box is #232, and was located nearby at the corner of Main Street and Park Avenue. When opened and the switch pulled, the “ticker tape” punched holes that triggered the gong and blasts on a horn in a sequence, 2 - 3 - 2, announcing the general area of the fire. Several call boxes were placed around the village with their own numbers to bring firefighters to that area.
Seen with Don Ennis in the background and Toby Unger, this machine was pulled to the scene by men and pumped by them, with about 15 people on each side. This pumper could either self feed or pump water from a bucket brigade. It could pump water up to 200 gallons per minute.
The headlights of this 1930 Seagrave “Suburbanite Pumper” can be seen peering out at Main Street through the windows of the firehouse garage doors. Called “The Grey Ghost” because of its unique color scheme, the Grey Ghost Exempt Association formed in 1967 and restored it to its present condition.
The upstairs room of Capen Hose was used for dances, minstrel shows, chili dinners, breakfasts, community Bingo nights, meetings and other functions. Today it holds display cases with equipment and memorabilia from department and firefighting history. The hose carriage featured here was purchased by Capen Hose in 1898. With up to 600 feet of hose on the reel, it was hand-drawn to a fire and hooked up to a pumper.

Sigillo Chiropractic The Chiropractic Examination: Piriformis Syndrome
The piriformis muscle, located deep in the buttock, can cause a great deal of pain if it goes into spasm. The chiropractic approach to diagnosing this syndrome includes a full evaluation of your spine and pelvis and the related musculature. A functional, orthopedic and neurological examination is normally also performed. Dysfunction in the sacroiliac joints is one contributory factor, which can lead to neuromuscular dysfunction causing Dr. Christopher J. Sigillo, D.C. weakness in the other muscles in the area. Several activities are said to aggravate the pain in a piriformis syndrome such as walking, sitting, climbing stairs, performing squats and running, but they are so general as to be unreliable for diagnostic purposes. The chiropractor will look for several signs of piriformis syndrome: • A possible sign of a tight piriformis muscle is having one foot pointing outwards more than the other when you lie relaxed on your back. • Direct palpation (touch) of the muscle reveals a taut and tender muscle, often with trigger points present, causing referred pain locally or down the leg. • Either resisted external rotation or passive internal rotation of the hip may increase the pain. Resisted muscle testing can be used to see if tendinitis is present. But since the piriformis works in conjunction with several other muscles in the buttock area such as the quadratus femoris, obturator internus, and the superior and inferior gemellus muscles, it is difficult to be specific. If there are neurological signs and symptoms present, several tests are performed to rule out a disc injury. Some of these tests are modified to find out if the sciatic nerve is being affected and irritated by the taut piriformis muscle, and your chiropractor is an expert in assessing the condition.

Town of Sweden water study and presentation on-line The Town of Sweden had a packed house for its Water Study Presentation on August 7; more than 150 residents attended. Town Engineer MRB Group presented the draft of the town-wide Comprehensive Water Plan. The draft plan and MRB’s power point presentation are available on-line at www.townofsweden.org and on the Town of Sweden Supervisor Facebook page. The study shows the estimated cost of bringing public water to every property
in the Town of Sweden. Supervisor Kevin Johnson will be meeting with the USDA next week to begin the process of applying for grants and low interest loans to fund water expansion. The town is making use of a Median Household Income survey completed earlier this year and an informal survey of water issues and the desire for public water to develop a plan for expansion. Clarkson to celebrate Good Neighbor Days with random acts of kindness This year during Good Neighbor Days, August 19 through 25, the Town of Clarkson will be encouraging Random Acts of Kindness. All town residents are invited to do acts of kindness for other residents during this week. It can be as easy as helping a neighbor with yard work, stopping by to visit or buying a coffee for the person behind you in line. Visit the Clarkson Town Hall or the Seymour Library to pick up Act of Kindness colored paper strips.
As you perform a random act of kindness, record your act on the strip. Return completed strips to the collection box at the Town of Clarkson, Seymour Library or at the Welcome Booth at the Clarkson Good Neighbor Day Event on Friday, August 24, where a Chain of Kindness will be made for all to see. After the event, the Chain of Kindness will be on display at the Clarkson Town Hall. Provided information
Seymour Library starts a new project in the Local History Room The Local History Room in the Seymour Library, 161 East Avenue, Brockport, was built three years ago. It is filled with extensive reference documents and books, newspaper articles and clippings, high school and college yearbooks, and a wide variety of artifacts about the wider Brockport area. Also, greeting the eye of the visitor, some temporary displays announce current activity by local writers, museums, artists, schools, hobbyists, and other community interests. Some empty space in the display cases have prompted planning for how to fill them. The Seymour Library board of trustees has started a concerted effort to keep the glass display cases filled with interesting exhibits. An ad hoc committee of the board is exploring what local institutions and activity to put on display for two months at a time over a year. The committee chairperson is Taysie Pennington, president of the Seymour Library board, joined by these members: Abby DeVuyst, Seymour Library adult librarian; Carl Gouveia, Seymour Library Director; Doug Hickerson, Town

of Sweden resident; and Linda Sanford, Town of Sweden’s representative to the Seymour board. The kinds of displays that are being considered for 2018-2019 include these categories: School events, hand crafters, civic clubs, Scouts, museums, and others. The current display through the end of September is provided by The Navy Club of Lake Ontario which has its headquarters at 21 Clinton Street in Brockport. Director Carl Gouveia said about the new display case planning: “During the planning phase, Dr. Bakshi, who spearheaded the construction of the Local History Room, had envisioned that the room would provide a space where the community could study our area’s history, while interacting with it, and creating new historical documents for the future. The library’s vision for the display cases builds upon Dr. Bakshi’s vision by celebrating our community’s past, our community’s present and our community’s future.” Provided Information

“Drums Along the Mohawk” is the setting for Ron Zorn’s latest display at the Newman Riga Library in Churchville. When the Revolutionary War broke out in 1775, the Tories were forced out of the Mohawk Valley by the Patriots. The Iroquois allied themselves with the Tories and the battle was on. One of the signature battles of the era was at Fort Stanwix in Rome. Mr. Zorn has skillfully depicted that battle, as well as a skirmish at the old Johnson Fort in Schenectady. The display will be up until the end of August. For more information, call the Library at 293-2009.

As you all may recall the CSX Bridge was removed in 2013, leaving the two concrete bridge abutments. The Village of Spencerport DPW Crew painted the deteriorating abutments, but they have continued to deteriorate. In 2017, CSX was contacted regarding the condition of the abutments and determined that the removal of the abutments and grading the banks back would be the best solution. Tentatively work will begin on the abutments the week of August 27. Traffic will be reduced to one lane during the day and the contractor’s goal is to have the work completed prior to the start of school on September 5. Thank you in advance for your patience during this project; the result will be a great improvement to the village.

An ocean away, Brockport HS grad lives in Europe, supports NATO mission A 2017 Brockport High School graduate and Rochester native is serving our country in the Navy, living on the coast of Spain, and participating in a critical NATO ballistic missile defense (BMD) mission while assigned to the guided-missile destroyer USS Ross. Seaman John Dengel is an operations specialist aboard one of the four advanced warships forward-deployed to Rota, Spain, a small village on the country’s southwest coast 65 miles south of the city of Seville. A Navy operations specialist is responsible for tracking and identifying all aircraft, ships and submarines. Dengel credits success in the Navy with lessons learned growing up in Rochester. “At home, I learned that growing up with less can create a good drive and work ethic and has led to positivity and success in my Navy career so far,” said Dengel. These four destroyers are forward-deployed in Rota to fulfill the United States’ phased commitment to NATO BMD while also carrying out a wide range of missions to support the security of Europe. According to the NATO website, many countries have, or are trying to develop ballistic missiles. The ability to
acquire these capabilities does not necessarily mean there is an immediate intent to attack NATO, but that the alliance has a responsibility to take any possible threat into account as part of its core task of collective defense. U.S. Navy Aegis ballistic missile defense provides scalability, flexibility and mobility. These systems are equally beneficial to U.S. assets, allies and regional partners in all areas of the world. Positioning four ballistic missile defense ships in Spain provides an umbrella of protection to forward-deployed forces, friends and allies while contributing to a broader defense of the United States. Guided-missile destroyers are 510 feet long warships that provide multi-mission offensive and defensive capabilities. The ships are armed with tomahawk cruise missiles, advanced gun systems, close-in gun systems and long-range missiles to counter the threat to friendly forces posed by manned aircraft, anti-ship, cruise and tactical ballistic missiles. Destroyers are deployed globally and can operate independently or as part of carrier strike groups, surface action groups or amphibious readiness groups. Their presence helps the Navy control the sea. Sea control is the

Seaman John Dengel. necessity for everything the Navy does. The Navy cannot project power, secure the commons, deter aggression, or assure allies without the ability to control the seas when and where desired. The ship is named after Capt. Donald Kirby Ross, who was presented a Medal of Honor by Adm. Chester Nimitz for his actions during the attack on Pearl Harbor. “I’m proud to lead such a dedicated, experienced, resilient and mission-oriented crew,” said Cmdr. Bryan S. Gallo, commanding officer of USS Ross. “Team Ross always meets the mission while taking care of each other and having a fun time doing it.” Serving in the Navy is a continuing tradition of military service for Dengel, who has military ties with family members who have previously served. Dengel is honored to carry on that family tradition. “My great-grandfather and grandfather were both in the Navy,” said Dengel. “But I made the decision on my own to join.” Unique experiences build strong fellowship among the crew of more than 300 women and men aboard Ross. Their hard work and professionalism are a testament to the namesake’s dedication and the ship’s motto, “Fortune Favors Valor.” The crew is motivated, and can quickly adapt to changing conditions, according to Navy officials. It is a busy life of specialized work, watches and drills. Serving aboard a guided-missile destroyer instills accountability and toughness and fosters initiative and integrity. As a member of one of the U.S. Navy’s most relied upon assets, Dengel and other Ross sailors know they are a part of a legacy that will last beyond their lifetimes providing the Navy the nation needs. “The Navy has greatly contributed to my leadership development and my ability to work as a team player,” said Dengel. “The best part about serving in Spain is the easy access of traveling throughout Europe. I also really enjoy the liberty programs offered to sailors.” Provided information and photo

Kellie Gregoire, Candidate for Town of Murray Republican Commitee My name is Kellie Gregoire and I am a candidate for the Town of Murray Republican Committee for election District 6. I am a God-fearing woman who has lived in the Town of Murray for 19 years. I have been married to my husband Mark for 20 years and together we are raising our six children in our country home along Ridge Road. I am actively involved in 4-H, home schooling our children, a school bus driver, a domestic engineer and operate a small business. I was inspired by an advertisement in the Lake Country Pennysaver this spring by Allen Lofthouse of Kendall. He encouraged people to become involved in their community by running for their respective political committees. I have also been very inspired by our President, Donald J. Trump. President Trump said (talking about Americans) “We will never give up, we will never give in, we will never, ever back down, and we will never, ever surrender-because we are Americans and our hearts bleed Red, White, and Blue.” I re-

Operatic Cabaret show comes to Albion Kerri Lynn Slominski heads to Albion to perform her witty, autobiographic operatic cabaret show: “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Audition” on September 29. Spend an hour with the dramatic coloratura soprano, as she rambles and sings about the crazy experiences she continues to face in her budding career in opera. From travel misadventures to audition mishaps, Slominski vividly entertains her audience featuring the works of Mozart, Puccini, Verdi and more! This 18 and over show is full of surprises. “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Audition” debuted at the 2017 KeyBank Rochester Fringe Festival. Jack Garner praised it as an, “amusing opera memoir.” Slominski has been applauded for having a lovely, warm voice and outstanding presentation when performing throughout the United States and Italy. Slominski holds a Professional Studies Certificate in Opera and a M.M. for Opera Performance from Temple University. She also received her B.M. in Vocal Performance from Peabody Conservatory of Music. She continues her studies in New York City.

membered that it isn’t just my right to run for government office, it’s my civic duty. The committee’s primary role is to nominate candidates for election or appointment. The current District 6 committee members do not live in our district. I would like to have District 6 residents represented by someone who lives here in our district and it would be my privilege to serve them. I would also like the voters to elect their representatives during the primary elections on September 13, 2018 rather than having someone appointed for them by the current committee. I have no political, financial or professional ties to the Town’s Government. I would merely like to be a voice for my neighbors in our district by nominating candidates that reflect Republican Core Values and represent you fairly, honestly, and openly while serving on our Republican Committee. When they come home hungry, have fruits and vegetables ready to eat What’s the first thing you or your kids grab when you come home hungry? If you said chips, crackers, or energy bars, you are not the only one. Packaged snacks are easy and convenient. But why not make fruits and vegetables just as easy to grab, both for you and your kids? This summer, Finger Lakes Eat Smart New York is running a campaign to provide you with ideas, recipes and tools to help your family enjoy fresh (as well as frozen or canned) produce – to make it easy to “grab the good stuff.” It takes a little planning, but it’s worth it. Eating more fruits and vegetables will help the whole family stay healthy. Here are a few things to try out: •Keep fruits and veggies where they’re easy to see. For instance, have a bowl of fresh fruit on the kitchen table, and remind your family to wash the fruit before eating. •Store ready-to-eat fruit and veggies snacks in the fridge. Here are some quick and easy ideas: •Peel and section oranges. Store in plastic snack bags or covered bowls in the fridge. •Store sliced vegetables in the refrigerator in snack bags or clear containers and serve with dips like hummus or guacamole. •Toss veggies with cooked pasta and your favorite oil and vinegar dressing. •Assemble chunks of melon, apple, orange,
and pear on skewers for a fruity kabob. For a raw veggie version, use vegetables like zucchini, cucumber, squash, sweet peppers, or tomatoes. •Kids love to dip their foods. Whip up a quick dip for veggies with yogurt and seasonings such as herbs or garlic. Serve with raw vegetables like broccoli, carrots, or cauliflower. Fruit chunks go great with yogurt flavored with cinnamon or vanilla extract. •Here are some more tasty dip ideas (1 serving is 2 tablespoons of dip) •Honey-Mustard Dipping Sauce: 1/4 cup fat-free plain yogurt, 1/4 cup low-fat sour cream, 2 teaspoons honey and 2 teaspoons spicy brown mustard. Mix all ingredients together. Store in a covered container in the refrigerator. Makes 4 servings. •Curry Dip: 1 cup fat-free sour cream, 1 cup fat-free plain yogurt, 1 tablespoon curry powder. Mix all ingredients together. Store in a covered container in the refrigerator. Makes 16 servings. •Avocado Dip: 2 medium ripe avocados, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, 1/4 cup salsa, 1/8 teaspoon salt. Peel and chop avocados. Toss avocado with lemon juice in small bowl. Add salsa and salt. Mash with a fork. Cover and store in the refrigerator. Makes 12 servings

Strategies parents can use to motivate students Students may need some time to adjust at the beginning of a new school year. Summer vacations typically lack the structure of the school year, and it might be unfair to expect kids to seamlessly slip back into their more regimented lives as students. While some early school year sluggishness might be normal, that should wear off pretty quickly. If not, and students appear to be struggling to get motivated for their schoolwork, parents can try various strategies that should help reignite youngsters’ passions for learning. •Make your home more school-friendly. Summer is a relaxing time of year when parents have a tendency to relax rules around the house. But come the school year, parents must make sure their homes are

as conducive to studying as possible. Resist the urge to turn the television on each night so students are not distracted from their studies. Keep the home quiet so students are motivated to focus on their studies. •Encourage participation in extracurricular activities. Various studies have examined the relationship between extracurricular activities and academic performance. A 2002 study published in the journal Sociology of Education found that participation in extracurricular activities is associated with improved grade point average, increased college attendance and reduced absenteeism. The link between participation in extracurricular activities and improved academic performance is still in need of study, but such participation may help children acclimate to the structure of the school year more quickly than they might if they do not participate in such activities. •Encourage curious youngsters. Kids are curious, and fostering that curiosity can be a great way for parents to get their kids
excited about learning. Whether it’s during the school year and part of their curriculum or on summer break, encourage kids to engage in subjects that interest them. As kids learn more about the topics and subjects that interest them, they may develop a passion for learning that they can then take with them to the classroom. •Express an interest in the subjects children are studying. Another way to motivate students at the dawn of a new school year is to express an interest in the subjects they’re studying. Ask questions about their studies and encourage them to share their thoughts and opinions. Engaging students about the subjects they’re studying can motivate them to explore those subjects more deeply than they otherwise might. Motivating kids to be excited about their schoolwork at the dawn of a new school year can sometimes be difficult. But parents can employ various strategies that can help their children readjust to life in the classroom and motivate them to perform to the best of their abilities. (Metro)

Certificate programs at GCC A lot can happen in 12 months-especially at Genesee Community College. Knowing that one year can create a whole new career trajectory for new employees or incumbent workers, GCC has introduced several new certificates for the fall 2018 semester. Specifically, one year certificates are now available in Enterpreneurship and Fashion Design. In addition to dozens of associate degree programs, there are now 17 certificate programs that can be completed in just one year. Certificate programs, generally requiring 30 academic credit hours, are designed to provide specific knowledge and skills required to perform a specific function. While certificate programs can catapult learners into two and four-year degree programs, they also fast-track the transition from beginner to qualified worker. Certificates can also be used to advance a current career path for incumbent workers who find themselves stalled in their occupation. Certificate programs are also perfect for those who are balancing responsibilities of children, jobs and family care making attending a class on a college campus a real challenge. Eight of GCC’s certificate programs can be 50 to 75 percent completed online, and certificates in Criminal Justice, General Education and Teaching Assistant can be completed 100 percent online providing maximum convenience and accessibility. Turning a hobby or a personal passion into a full-time business will be easier after earning the one year Entrepreneurship Certificate which can be 75 percent
completed online. Business and Management Principles Marketing, Business Communication and Law, Professional Sales or Advertising and computer skills are all covered in the program. Anyone interested in fashion, design, merchandising, apparel, textiles, draping or fashion illustration should enroll in the one year Fashion Business: Fashion Design certificate program. GCC also offers certificate programs in: Accounting, Child Care, Computer Repair, Computerized Drafting and Design, Developmental Disabilities Studies, Gerontology, Health Studies, Help Desk Support, Hospitality Management, Medical Office Assistant, Musical Theatre and Web Design. Additional details on each of Genesee Community College’s programs, including the online opportunities are available at https://www.genesee.edu/academics/programs/default.cfm?sort=degree#CERT. Registration for all of GCC’s certificate programs is now open and there is still time to register for classes for the fall semester which starts Monday, August 20. Apply at https://www.genesee.edu/offices/admissions/apply/ or contact GCC’s Admissions Department at admissions@genesee.edu or call 1-866-CALL-GCC. For convenience, GCC offers classes online and at seven campus locations throughout the Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming Counties region. For a full listing of the degree and certificate programs that incorporate online courses, visit https://www.genesee.edu/offices/online/ or contact GCC’s Online Learning department via email at gcconline@genesee.edu or by calling 585-345-6969. Brockport Police report Between July 29 and August 4, the Brockport Police handled 357 calls for service (12,938 to date) to include two harassment/fight/assault reports, four family trouble reports, 162 special attentions, and conducted 28 traffic stops. Note that the above calls do not represent all of the calls received by the Brockport Police. It should be noted that not all of the calls are found to be as dispatched once on scene. Community message Wildlife within Brockport. Brockport is the home to your classic small town critters including stray cats, raccoons, deer, and foxes, just to name a few. The Brockport Police want to remind everyone of some steps to take when encountering these animals that call Brockport home. If you see an animal that is obviously injured or sick, call 911 to have an officer dispatched to properly take care of the animal. Some tips and advice for when
encountering a raccoon: Raccoons are primarily a nocturnal animal (awake at night and sleeps during the day), however, it is not uncommon for them to be out during the day time walking around in search for food. There is a common misconception that if a raccoon is out during the day that it is rabid, this is proven to be false. If a raccoon gets itself into a tight place where it cannot easily get out (ie. a dumpster) simply put a piece of wood into the space in a ramp type fashion and walk away. The raccoon will eventually make its way out of the space. Remember, the raccoon is more scared of you than you are of them. As always, if you have any questions in the moment, call 911 and request to speak to an on duty Brockport Police Officer. Any questions/comments can be directed to Chief Mark T. Cuzzupoli by calling 637-1020 or by email ChiefCuzzupoli@ brockportpolice.org. Provided information
