Meet Mark Cuzzupoli, Brockport’s new Chief of Police by Tami Raco Brockport Police Chief, Mark Cuzzupoli, was sworn into office as the new Chief of Police on April 5. Although Mark is new to the position of the Chief of the Brockport Police Department, he is not new to BPD or the community. Mark has been a lifetime resident to the area and been serving the community in law enforcement for nearly a quarter of a century. Mark Cuzzupoli grew up in Hamlin with his parents and brother and sister. Mark was an avid hockey player and he attended the Brockport school district. He met his wife, Robin, when they were juniors in high school. Soon after, they became high school sweethearts. Mark and Robin recently celebrated their 25-year wedding anniversary and are locally raising their beautiful family of four children. The seed of a career in law enforcement was planted at an early age for Mark. His godfather was a State Trooper and Robin’s father worked in Corrections. Mark also was greatly influenced by retired Brockport Chief of Police, Mark Depferd, whose son played hockey with Mark. These influences, plus the support of his parents, led Mark into pursuing an education in criminal justice. Mark graduated from SUNY Brockport in 1992 and went on to full time security and part time policing under the sponsorship of Chief Schrank of the Ogden Police Department. In seeking fulltime position in law enforcement and benefits for his family, Mark took a position in the Monroe County Jail. In 1996 Mark’s dream of becoming a full time police officer at Brockport Police came to a reality. Over the course of several decades Mark worked under three different Chiefs of Police. He worked various shifts and learned many

Mark underwent a cancer battle shortly after and had taken a leave of absence for his treatment. After overcoming thyroid cancer he returned to his position at Brockport Police. In 2010 he was promoted to Lieutenant. In this capacity he worked closely with Chief of Police Daniel Varrenti. Varrenti took Mark under his wing and began grooming him for the possibility of someday taking over his position as the Chief of Police. Chief Varrenti encouraged Mark, taught him many aspects of admin-

istrative responsibilities at the department as well as expert criminal investigation and drug enforcement training. During Mark’s years at the Brockport Police he directly supervised some high profile crimes such as the Valentine’s Day murders in 2009 and the Holly Colino arrest for murder last spring. He also participated in the start of some great community events such as National Night Out and SPARTAC (Students, Police and Residents Together Against Crime). As Chief Cuzzupoli now holds the reins of the Brockport Police Department, he oversees 15 fulltime officers including Lt.

Stephen Mesiti, Sgt Paul Wheat and Sgt Robert Hagen. He hopes to add a part time position in the future. He also has two civilian employees: Administrator Bambie Zimmerman, who has been working at the department for over 25 years, and Clerk Kayla Thompson. “I have been preparing for this position for several years and it’s a smooth transition,” said Chief Cuzzupoli. Cuzzupoli feels very fortunate to have the support of his wife who has been amazing with support and understanding. He is also grateful for the continued contact and support from Chief Varrenti and the other area Chiefs of Police including Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter. Chief Cuzzupoli has many goals but one of his bigger focuses is to double the community service the police department provides to the community. He plans to have more “foot patrol” to help increase the visibility of the officers and build stronger community relations with residents and businesses. Cuzzupoli wants to connect more with the youth in the community. Recently one of his officers stopped to shoot some basketball hoops with some kids outside playing basketball. He will continue to work closely with the college and looks forward to building relationships with the local church leaders as well. Ultimately, Chief Cuzzupoli would like the community to know that he has an open door policy. “Whether it’s good or bad I want to hear all the feedback,” said Cuzzupoli. “I want this department and all the officers to be very approachable.” He hopes the increase in community contact and stronger relations helps build more trust with the residents and the police as well as improve community safety. Chief Cuzzupoli was officially sworn into office during a public ceremony on April 5. Provided photo.

Hamlin presents Extra Mile Award for service On Wednesday, April 25, the Town of Hamlin awarded its Extra Mile Award to residents Michelle Johnson and Rick Wright. Michelle Johnson leads the Hamlin Seniors Group and her volunteer work includes working with the local Food Pantry, leading the Aerobics Group at Hamlin Town Hall, providing convenient drop off points for gifts for needy children in the local Angels program, and volunteering in numerous town events and sports programs. Michelle supports the local Lions Group, participates in the bell ringing program for the Salvation Army and is president of the Hamlin Morton Walker Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She is known for her enthusiasm and dedication to the groups she leads and according to Mark Ballerstine of the Hamlin Seniors, “She makes our twilight sparkle.” Rick Wright has served as a dedicated member on the Hamlin Volunteer Ambulance Corps for almost 30 years. Whether responding to calls, helping at various standbys,

or spending his days off from work performing various duties, his commitment to his field is described as the epitome of dedication and sacrifice. As the driving force of the organization, Rick has served as president of the Hamlin Volunteer Ambulance Corps for 14 years and is currently Director of Operations. While managing to balance a full-time job, family, friends, and outside interests, Rick’s strength and perseverance led the initiative to bring the services of the Central Orleans Volunteer Ambulance (COVA) to the Town of Hamlin after a severe decrease in volunteers threatened the shut-down of services in Hamlin. The Town of Hamlin would like to express deep thanks to both individuals for their service and dedication. Recipients of the Extra Mile Award have been nominated by fellow residents for exemplary service that has benefitted the town. Nominations are accepted until the end of every calendar year and can be sent to hamlinextramile@aol.com. Provided information

Officials Discuss Brockport CSD Budget Jill Reichhart, director of finance/treasurer, Darrin Winkley assistant superintendent for business, and Eileen Whitney, Brockport Rotary president, are shown after administrators presented an annual budget update to Brockport Rotarians. The tax increase was kept well under the two percent cap. Eighty-seven percent of fourteen new buses will be paid for through state aid. Depending on mileage, most are more than 10 years old. Capital costs went down, some due to paying off debt and lowering debt service. This helped offset contractual increases in wages and benefits like health care. The district is still shrinking slowly with continuing staff line reductions mainly as people retire. Tuesday, May 15 is budget voting day at 40 Allen Street, Building 800. More details can be found in the district’s newsletter sent out to all district taxpayers. Provided information.

Brockport Police report From April 30 through May 6, the Brockport Police Department handled 460 calls for service, were dispatched to 12 annoyance call, seven motor vehicle accidents, three fights in progress, nine family troubles, two customer troubles, two burglary reports, three neighbor troubles, conducted 157 special attentions that include, but are not limited to, house checks, business checks, bike patrol, etc., conducted 59 traffic stops. Note that the above calls do not represent all calls and that not all calls are found to be as dispatched once on scene. Community message: Consumers please beware this time of year. Almost every spring/summer, private contractors such as landscapers and driveway pavers are out looking for jobs. They may come to your door to solicit their services to you. The Village of Brockport requires each of these contractors to have a Peddling & Soliciting permit. Each person must display the permit in a way to be seen by the resident. (Refer to Brockport Village Code 23- Peddling & Soliciting on the Village of Brockport website). If for any reason you have questions or concerns about a solicitor contact 911 and we will come out to verify the solicitor. If the contractor/solicitor is someone whom you would like to hire, make sure you are aware of the agreed upon deals that they may offer you. Get work in writing, especially if they require cash up front. If it is too good to be true, it probably is. There are a lot of hard working and honest contractors in our community whom we can appreciate. However, please be aware of the potential person(s) who would like to take advantage of the kind residents of our community. As always, any requests for comment or questions regarding this release should be directed to Chief Mark Cuzzupoli at 637-1020 during regular business hours. Provided information

Concerned about Slaughter’s successor I was recently asked to consider being a third-party candidate for Congress. The seat had been held for a long time by my Congresswoman, Louise Slaughter. Very sadly, she passed away suddenly after suffering a fall in her home. It has always been my dream to run for Congress one day. I would especially like to make the case for a Canadian-style national health insurance program to cover all Americans. However, I declined the offer to be the candidate of this third-party. Here’s why: Louise Slaughter had been good friends for about 40 years with a local office-holder. He had just announced his candidacy to succeed Louise. I believe that no one should run against Louise’s friend in 2018 as a way to honor what Louise would have wanted. So I declined the offer. I did not write this letter to promote myself. I did it because I want people to share my hope that someday we will have political candidates who will want to do the unselfish thing. Right now, we all know that we have very few who do. Stewart B. Rangers open 4-0 in division Bees win sixth straight by Warren Kozireski Spencerport’s boys tennis team swept all three doubles matches and third and fourth singles to defeat Brockport 5-2 for their fourth victory in division play. The first doubles team of David Bresia and Luc Fedele won 7-6, 6-0 while the second doubles unit of Giovanni Fargo and Jadon Schlierf had little trouble in a 6-2, 6-2 win. The third doubles team of Nolan Benson and Salvatore Sack also made it look easy in their 6-2, 6-0 victory. Third singles Henry Hart won in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 and fourth singles Alex Graff rebounded from a second set loss in his 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 win.

For Brockport, their top two singles players were victorious as Matt Benedict and Michael Rennie both took their opponents 6-1, 6-3 and 6-2, 6-2 respectively. Meanwhile Byron-Bergen, who dropped their first two matches of the season, won their sixth consecutive 4-1 versus Kendall. First singles Kyle Foeller won 6-2, 6-4 while second singles Josh Swapceinski also won in straight sets 6-1, 6-3. Third singles Sam Pringle finished his set in extra time 6-3, 7-5 while the second doubles team of Coltin Henry and John Mercovich rebounded from a first set 5-7 loss to win the final two 6-3, 7-5. Kendall’s first doubles unit of Stephen Balka and Matthew Murray also came back in a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory.

Kendall spotted Attica an 8-0 lead and a fifth inning rally fell short in what became a 12-3 loss in girls softball. The Eagles rallied in the home half of the fifth inning as sophomore Autumn Woodward drew a one-out walk and went to second on a single by senior Ashley Kingsbury. A wild pitch advanced runners before Kelly Mayes drove in Woodward, but reach base due to an error. After a double-steal, senior co-captain Adrianna Passarell reached on a fielder’s choice RBI error scoring Kingsbury on the initial play and Mayes crossing the plate

to the overthrow to close the Attica lead to 8-3. But any thoughts of a comeback ended when the visitors scored four more runs in their half of the sixth for the 12-3 final. Senior co-captain Kierstyn Christiansen had one of Kendall’s four hits with a second inning down the left field line; Passarell stroked a two-out single in the fourth inning and Kingsbury added her second knock of the game with a two-out single in the seventh inning. Eagles eighth-grader Sara Mattle struck out four Attica batters, but did have three runs score on wild pitches in throwing a complete game.

Depetres leads Cadets by Warren Kozireski Hilton outscored Spencerport 5-2 in the second half on their way to an 11-5 victory in boys lacrosse. The Rangers jumped out to a 1-0 lead four-plus minutes into the contest as senior Jonathan Agnes fed classmate Mark Schnauber to the right side of the net. Hilton senior Jordan DePetres tied it 1:05 later coming out from behind the net after the Cadets killed off a one-minute penalty and took the lead for good as Zachary Mitrano bull rushed the net at 7:33 of the first. DePetres netted his second goal on a bounce shot after a pass from sophomore Austin Holley to make it 3-1 Hilton, but the Rangers countered 16 seconds later as senior Owen VanWie won the draw and took it all the way himself for the goal. It took just ten more seconds for Hilton to regain their two-goal advantage as junior Shawn Doran returned the favor in winning the draw and scoring to end the first quarter. Cadets sophomore Ben Mitrano scored two consecutive goals—the second on a sidestep move around the defense—less

than five minutes apart in the second quarter to extend the lead to 6-2, but the Rangers scored the final goal of the first half as Schnauber found the back of the net after an assist from Zach Edwards. Ben Mitrano found Hilton junior Justin Mosher all alone in front of the net on a missed defensive assignment just nine seconds into the second half. The Rangers closed to within three as VanWie found Edwards for the goal, but the Cadets scored the next four consecutive goals to put the game of reach. DePetres completed his hat trick while getting knocked down at 6:54 of the third quarter; junior Tyler Hacker raced down the right wing and found the lower left corner to open the fourth quarter scoring and DePetres followed with his fourth of the contest again coming out from behind the net at 5:19. And senior Jason Spencer scored on a rebound to extend the Hilton lead to 11-4. Spencerport junior Riley Schmeer completed the scoring at 9:34. Freshman goalie Adam Birkbeck made 12 saves for the 6-5 Rangers while Hilton junior Jason Kelsey stopped seven shots.

They had so many fantastic services. I would not be the person I am today if it wasn’t for my public library, to have unlimited access to everything it offered. A winding career path leads back to the library Out of high school Carl tried studies in electronic engineering and then factory work where he advanced into supervisory positions. “I started fishing for what I wanted to do and decided I really loved learning, loved education. I am still a very curious individual.” He completed his BS degree and secondary education degree at The College at Brockport in 2003 by age 25. But, teaching positions were not available. Failing to find teaching positions, he discovered the Rochester City School district needed librarians. “I loved libraries and thought I should get into this.” He completed his Master of Library Science (MLS) at UB in one and a half years. In 2007, while starting his MLS degree, Carl took a seven-week internship with the New York City department of education. Called “Summer in the City,” he worked with a teacher developing lessons and taught English in the summer school classroom. A sign of being “curious,” he expressed his wanderlust in his new environment. “I LOVED my time there,” he said emphatically. “It was beautiful. I took full advantage of all the opportunities I had in the city. After teaching three hours each day, I walked everywhere, including across the Brooklyn Bridge, through the projects with no fear, through Central Park, and toured all the museums, each one for two days or more.”

Half way through his internship, Rochester City School District announced two high school media specialist positions opened. He was hired as a school library media specialist. In this time period Carl and his wife Tina had Clementine born 2008 and Imogen in 2010. To supplement the income of their growing family, Carl also worked 20 hours a week at Gates Public Library as a reference librarian. He was attracted to the position open at Seymour Library and became Director on November 4, 2013. Carl and his family live in Gates, the town where he first entered the public library as a four-year old. At 40-years old, with energy and passion that started in his boyhood, he runs Seymour Library, treating patrons to the same sense of excitement and adventure he has known with “unlimited access to everything his library offers.” Carl’s journey has included extensive professional education. Here are his degrees and requirements for continuing in-service training while he is a full-time director: •Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in English with a concentration in Literature. Teaching certificate in English 7 through 12. No continuing education needed. •Master of Library Science (MLS) and certified as a media library specialist K through 12. Also certified as a New York State Public Librarian. Both certificates require continuing education. •Advanced Certificate in Public Library Administration from Long Island University. Currently studying for this. (Note: A future issue of this newspaper will focus on the Friends of Seymour Library. The energetic volunteer auxiliary group raises funds to support a wide array of library activities, programs, and equipment.)

Clarkson Town Supervisor Jerry Underwood: Advocate for Seymour Library

Clarkson Town Supervisor Jerry Underwood (left) donated his first year’s salary to the Seymour Library in January. Carl Gouveia (center), Seymour Library Director, and Taysie Pennington (right), president of the Seymour Library Board of Trustees, accepted Underwood’s donation. Provided photo.

Jerry Underwood has lived in Clarkson for 33 years. He has been retired for five years as general manager of a commercial lumber yard. In a phone interview, he was asked about the reasons for the donation of his salary, $18,000 after taxes, to Seymour Library. The following is his statement, edited for length. I have been going to libraries ever since I was very small. My mother, my grandmother, always took me to the public library. My wife takes our grandchildren to Seymour Library all the time for the different programs. For the Town of Clarkson, it’s like our centerpiece where people gravitate. I think Carl Gouveia and his staff do an excellent job. The library is very impressive in everything they do, all their different programs. They are constantly striving to find new ways to get people involved. Libraries’ services have expanded from the past. It’s

not just about borrowing a book anymore, it’s about all the programs they have for reading, social programs, and using the computers. And, many people say the library is a safe haven for kids. A library funded by three different municipalities is part of the budget problem. We all want to help. Unfortunately, with the tax cap that is imposed, it is very difficult to give more than the approximate 2% tax cap. If you do that there are other things that have to be cut. What drew my attention first (to donate) is when they had to cut the hours last year because of budget cuts. I would like to see the library open more hours. We are planning a joint meeting in next couple of weeks among the three municipalities and the Library board where we all can work together to figure a way out going forward.

Greece Performing Arts Society presents two concerts on May 20 at two different locations Music aficionados will have a tough decision to make on Sunday, May 20, when the Greece Performing Arts Society (GPAS) presents two different concerts at two different venues: a joint concert with the Greece Concert Band and Greece Community Orchestra at Bethany Presbyterian Church and a concert by the Greece Choral Society at St. Charles Borromeo Church. Both concert locations are on Dewey Avenue in the Town of Greece. The “Stage & Screen Concert” will showcase the Greece Concert Band directed by BJ Comer and the Greece Community Orchestra directed by Jonathan Allentoff. The program features musical highlights from award-winning Disney and Hollywood films, Broadway musicals and classic operas, including such favorites as “Aida,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Days of Wine and Roses,” “La La Land,” “Les Miserables,” “Peter Gunn,” “The Pink Panther” and more familiar songs. “Music from Broadway and other Popular Songs” is the

theme for the Greece Choral Society’s Spring Concert under the musical direction of Dr. Rollo Fisher and accompanied by pianist Kevin Wang. Karen Pearson, the president and coordinator of the 65member choral group, described the program with familiar musical phrases: “Give my regards to Broadway. Take a trip through the Phantom’s tunnels, attend his Masquerade, and let the spectacle astound you. Climb every mountain or follow the escapades of Esmeralda and Quasimodo. Hum along to Beatles’ tunes.” Joining the Greece Choral Society for this concert will be the ROC City Ringers, a bell choir directed by Jackie Anderson and Chris Lenti. The Greece Choral Society’s Spring Concert “Music from Broadway and other Popular Songs” will be Sunday, May 20, at 3:30 p.m., St. Charles Borromeo Church, 3003 Dewey Avenue (14616). Doors open at 2:30 p.m. with a suggested $5 donation.

Piriformis Syndrome

BROCKPORT OPTOMETRY FAMILY EYECARE A MEMBER OF

The piriformis muscle runs from the sacrum, a triangular bone at the base of the spine, to the outer hip bone. The muscle plays a part in hip and leg rotation, and in letting you balance on one leg. It provides general support to the pelvis. If you ever feel a pain in the Dr. Christopher J. Sigillo, D.C. hip, toward the center of the buttocks or down the back of the leg, you may be suffering from piriformis syndrome. This is a particular hazard for runners.

Doctors of chiropractic are trained to deal with the musculoskeletal system. During a piriformis examination, the patient is asked to flex and bend the knee and hip while lying down. The chiropractor then gently pushes on the leg to check hip joint mobility and flexibility of the piriformis muscle. Chiropractic treatment aims at restoring function of the pelvic and spinal joints which often can lie at the root of the piriformis problem. A fallen arch can also cause an unnatural rotation of the leg, which can strain the muscle. Your chiropractor may also give you postural and ergonomic tips and prescribe strengthening exercises to address the problem.

Hilton students tour Omega Consolidated for Small Business Week

Hilton,

The Little Village With The Big Heart!

IILTON FAMILY DENTISTRY

Accepting New Patients All Ages Welcome

Four Hilton High School students spent time at Omega Consolidated Corp. in Hilton as part of Small Business Week, April 30-May 5. The visits were coordinated by ACT for Education, an initiative that delivers positive messaging about our local school districts and encourages community support of public education, as a way to get students involved in their communities and prepare for their futures. Martin F. Hunte, Omega president, gave the students a tour of the precision machining, design, fabrication and assembly plant. He also talked to the students about the traits he looks for in potential employees – an interest in math and science, and most importantly, a good attitude. The students were accompanied by technology teacher Steve Randall and alternative education teacher Doug Whitehair. Provided information

May is Poppy Month. American citizens wear this memorial poppy as a reminder of the meaning of Memorial Day. For over 90 years, this scarlet flower has symbolized the sacrifice of life that millions of service men and women made to keep our nation free. American Legion Auxiliary members throughout the county are distributing these poppies during the month of May for Memorial Day, a time that our country has set aside to remember and honor these fallen military troops. During World War I, poppies unexpectedly bloomed on the scarred battlefields of Flanders Fields. Their brilliant red, like the blood shed there, is a symbol of hope and a perpetual memorial to the courage displayed there and around the globe. Our poppies are handmade by veterans from both the Bath and Canandaigua VA medical centers. All donations are used to assist and rehabilitate veterans. Support of this program enables American Legion Auxiliary units to fund many local veterans’ programs at the Richards House, Eagle Star Home, Veterans Outreach Center, Rochester Outpatient Center, Veterans Court and VA hospitals. Saints can’t overcome early deficit by Warren Kozireski Churchville-Chili spotted visiting RushHenrietta a 6-0 lead through the first three innings and their middle inning comeback fell short in a 10-3 loss in boys baseball. Saints Junior Jaden Nelomes broke up the shutout bid with a two-out solo home run to left into a stiff wind in the bottom of the third inning to cut the Royal Comets lead to 6-1. They also rallied in the fourth inning as senior Ryan Demitrovic led off with a single to center and, after a passed ball put him at second base, advanced to third

on a single by senior Michael Mule. The two then pulled off a double steal with Demitrovic scoring. Sophomore catcher John Bagley followed with an RBI single to right scoring Mule from second to make it 6-3 Rush-Henrietta. But the Royal Comets plated a single run with a two-out rally in the sixth and three more on a bases-loaded triple in the seventh to put the game out of reach. Nelomes, Demitrovic and Bagley each had two-hit games while Mule and seventh inning pinch hitter Jacob Carroll each added one hit to the Saints offense.
