Master Gardeners gearing up for 2024 Fair Flower Show

Orleans County Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners are gearing up for the 2024 Flower Show, happening at the Orleans County 4-H Fair July 22 through 27. The Flower Show will once again be showcased next to the Master Gardener booth in the Lartz Building. Anyone in the community can enter an exhibit in one of eight categories – Fairy Garden, Floral Arrangement, Houseplant, Succulent, Unique Container, Hanging Basket/Urn/Pot, Garden Accent, and Miscellaneous.

A small group of Master Gardeners revived the Flower Show last year, with a great turnout. This year, exhibitors bring their entries to the fairgrounds either Sunday, July 21, between 3 and 6 p.m., or 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, July 22. Master Gardeners assign each entry a number and then arrange the entries according to category. Voting is by paper ballot, with fairgoers choosing their favorites in each category and submitting their votes at the Master Gardener booth. Ribbons for first, second, and third place are awarded for each category, and there will be prizes for the top three entries that receive the most “Best in Show” votes. Master Gardeners are hoping for an even bigger Flower Show this year. They are encouraging anyone in the general public to enter anything garden-related that they are particularly proud of. From a favorite houseplant to a cut flower bouquet, an original painting or garden photograph, there’s a category for almost everything. Exhibitors can enter up to three items in each category. As an added bonus, each exhibitor will receive one free week-long admission pass to the fair. (Only one free pass per person, regardless of how many entries submitted).

Exhibitors must submit a paper entry form indicating quantity and category of submissions. The paper entry forms must be received in the Orleans County CCE office by Monday, July 15. Paper entry forms as well as all rules and guidelines can be found on the Orleans County Cornell Cooperative Extension website (https://tinyurl.com/c9kdmtry). The paper entry forms allow Master Gardeners to plan for adequate space and display materials prior to the start of fair. Actual Flower Show submissions will only be received Sunday and Monday, July 21 and 22, before the fair opens to the public Email klo54@cornell.edu or call 585-798-4265 ext 125 with any questions. Applications open for NYS Math and Science Teaching Incentive Program

The New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) has opened the NYS Math and Science Teaching Incentive Program application for the 2024-25 academic year. This program offers scholarships to cover the cost of tuition for full-time undergraduate or graduate students who commit to pursuing careers as math and science teachers in secondary education (grades 7-12).

The NYS Math and Science Teaching Incentive Program aims to address the critical need for qualified math and science teachers in New York State. By offering financial support to aspiring educators, the program ensures that New York will retain its most talented teachers and give students access to high-quality education in these essential subjects. New York State Higher Education Services Corporation President Dr. Guillermo Linares said, “The NYS Math and Science Teaching Incentive Program plays a crucial role in our mission to enhance the educational foundation for New York students. By investing in the next generation of math and science educators, we’re not only fostering the professional growth of our teachers but also ensuring that our students benefit from the most talented and dedicated teachers.”

SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr. said, “SUNY is New York State’s largest teacher preparation provider, and we are proud to work alongside our partners to address critical teacher shortages. The NYS Math and Science Teaching Incentive Program is a tremendous opportunity to support SUNY students on the path to becoming skilled educators in our public school classrooms.”

Eligible students who are enrolled in an approved undergraduate or graduate program can learn more and apply for the scholarship at https://www.hesc. ny.gov/find-aid/nys-grants-scholarships/nys-mathand-science-teaching-incentive-program/. Students who do not meet the program citizenship and residency requirements can apply through the New York State Dream Act at https://www.hesc.ny.gov/ applying-aid/dream-act-non-citizens/. Recipients of the scholarship must agree to teach math or science in a secondary education setting in New York State for a minimum of five years upon graduation within two years of completion of the degree program and receipt of initial certification.

Webinar on July 30 to provide information on starting a farm stand

Starting a roadside stand can be an opportunity to help your business grow. A roadside or a farm stand is a great way to support your operation with additional income, improve your farm’s visibility and increase your customer base, supply your community with fresh produce, and help reduce food shortage issues.

As there are many benefits to a roadside stand, there are also many things to consider before you start. Cornell Extension of Monroe and Ontario County partnered up to organize the “Cultivate & Sell: Your Guide to Starting a Farmstand” webinar. This event is designed to help farmers and homesteaders who want to set up a new stand but don’t know how or those seeking more information to improve an existing one. Cornell Cooperative Extension and an SBDC of Niagara expert will discuss topics

from zoning and liability, signage and location, marketing, and competitive pricing of sold goods, to day-to-day operations such as keeping the stand fully stocked to keep customers coming.

Corey Baxter of Baxter Family Farm, Churchville, will serve as a farmer-presenter. He will share his journey from starting a small stand to the permanent structure, help answer participants’ questions, and provide tips and suggestions using his longterm experience.

The webinar, held on Tuesday, July 30, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., is free but preregistration is required to receive a Zoom link to join the session.

Prayer To The Blessed Virgin (Never known to fail)

Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin assist me in my necessity. Oh Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein, you are my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3X). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3X). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and foget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Blood and platelet donors critically needed in July

The American Red Cross continues to stress that blood and platelet donors are critically needed right now to support lifesaving transfusions this summer. Donors of all blood types are in demand, especially those with type O blood and donors giving platelets. Every donation counts in the mission to keep blood products stocked for patients, including those facing life-threatening situations. More than a quarter of all blood products each year are used in critical care and emergency room cases, highlighting the importance of generous blood and platelet donors. Book a time to give blood or platelets by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800RED CROSS or by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App.

The Red Cross has teamed up with Universal Pictures for the theatrical release of Twisters to help avoid a summer blood shortage. All who come to give blood or platelets in July will get a Fandango Movie Ticket by email and will also automatically be entered for a chance to win a 2025 Ram 1500 Big Horn®. See RedCrossBlood.org/Twisters for full details.

SUNY Brockport librarian earns award funded by James Patterson

Librarian Kellie Barbato was selected to receive one of the 250 “bonuses” awarded to librarians by the American Library Association (ALA) funded by a $50,0000 donation from bestselling author James Patterson.
