Protecting our Great Lakes by Barbara Burke Tammy Bleier, a Greece Arcadia High School graduate, loves the water, she has ever since she was a baby. Growing up in Greece, she had constant exposure to Lake Ontario, Ontario Beach Park and Keuka Lake, where she vacationed with her family every summer. Bleier says, “I grew up a short five minute drive from Ontario Beach Park. When I got my first car I would drive to the beach and along Edgemere Drive, it was my happy place. I walked the beaches all the time. The lake was my place for recreation and relaxation. I don’t remember seeing much pollution then, now we are in the midst of a crisis.” Bleier formed the Plastic Lakes Project in Spring 2018 with the goal to research and combat plastics in the Great Lakes. It is an offshoot of Plastic Ocean Project (POP), an organization that Bleier got involved with while studying at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. She graduated from UNCW with a bachelor of science in Marine Biology in 2014. While volunteering with POP and working on the plastics problem in the oceans, Bleier discovered that three million pounds of plastics were entering Lake Ontario every year. That is when she decided to get involved in the plastic problem that was happening right in her hometown. The goal of Plastic Lakes Project is to research, educate and combat plastic pollution in the Great Lakes. Bleier started going to events at the Alliance for the Great Lakes, an organization founded in the 70s with a goal of “protecting the Great Lakes for today and tomorrow.” “I wanted to find out what is going on with the plastics problem right here in our community. I found that a lot of the plastics in the lake get washed up onto the shore. The debris is spread out and it is hard to track. The plastic in the lake breaks down into micro plastics and they can’t be seen, unlike in the oceans where large areas of plastic are seen floating on the surface. The micro plastics in the lake sink to the floor of the lake where fish and wildlife feed. The plastic problem in our Great Lakes is insidious, you can’t see the problem. In the oceans, photos are available that show the large areas of plastic debris,” Bleier said. Why is Plastic Lakes Project so important? According to their website, “Three million pounds of plastic ends up in Lake Ontario each year. That’s enough plastic waste to fill 28 Olympic-sized swimming pools. While studies are emerging on plastic pollution in the Great Lakes,

Plastic Lakes Project is therefore focusing here first, as Lake Ontario is very unique. The other four Great Lakes eventually flow into Lake Ontario, making it the most vulnerable to plastic pollution. The highest count was outside of Toronto, with 3.4 million pieces found in one square mile. What’s more is that Lake Ontario is the last Great Lake before the St. Lawrence River, which empties into the ocean at the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Everything is connected. A majority of plastic waste comes from densely populated cities, like Chicago, Toronto, Cleveland and Detroit, as well as runoff from agricultural fields, recreation, and shipping. Unlike marine plastics that tend to move towards large, central, ocean gyres at the surface, lake plastics are often taken to shore by wind and currents. Of the litter that washes ashore, roughly 80 percent is plastic debris. Plastic takes hundreds of years to decompose, meaning it will remain in the ecosystem far beyond our lifetimes.” Since forming Plastic Lakes Project, Bleier has held monthly beach cleanups. The objective of the cleanups is to not only pick up plastics along the beach which will eventually go back into the lake, but to also educate on the problem of single use plastics and to bring awareness to the alternatives. Bleier’s first cleanup was held in May and she did it on her own. In June she was joined by family and friends and through the use of social media the July and

August cleanups were attended by 20 to 25 individuals at each event. During the cleanup, items are collected, logged and carefully counted. Bleier uses the data in her research work. To date, in the June, July and August cleanups 10,000 total items have been collected and 483 pounds of trash has been diverted from littering Lake Ontario. The top items collected have been right in line in all three cleanups; cigarette butts, plastic pieces and food wrappers. In total 79 percent of what was collected was plastic or had plastic components. “Every little bit helps, and every individual can make a difference, my heart is so full and I am so thankful for the response from the community and all of the caring individuals who come out to support this project. The reception has been overwhelming. It really gives you hope,” Bleier said. Bleier is currently working on her master’s degree at The College at Brockport studying environmental science and ecology. She is also working to have cigarette receptacles placed in public areas as a part of the Keep America Beautiful Project, a non-profit organization that educates about ending littering, improving recycling and beautifying communities. Cigarette butts are the number one item picked up during beach cleanups.

Volunteers needed to transcribe books into Braille There is a need for volunteers to transcribe books and other materials into Braille. The Spencerport Lions Braille Service offers Braille Transcription classes at the Gates/Spencerport Ambulance building, Lyell Avenue, Spencerport. Classes start on September 13, and will meet weekly, Thursday mornings through May. Town of Hamlin Applications for a Clerk to the Assessor’s Office

The Town of Hamlin is accepting applications for a position for a Clerk to the Assessor’s Office, for 15 hours per week, all applications and resumes are due to the Hamlin Town Clerk’s Office, 1658 Lake Road, Hamlin, NY 14464, by 4pm on Friday, August 31st. Parma gun shop burglarized Chinappi’s Firearms & Supplies, located at 5016 West Ridge Road, Parma was burglarized twice in less than a week. Monroe County Sheriff ’s Office is working in conjunction with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Town of Parma to solve the crimes. Investigators are working to confirm the number of handguns and long guns removed during the theft, but believe ten were stolen on August 11, and between 35 and 40 stolen during the overnight hours of August 15 to 16. The latest incident was the seventh burglary at this location since 2007. An estimated total of 82 firearms are believed to have been stolen. MCSO has made several previous attempts with business owner August Chinappi to prevent further burglaries to include site security and physical security improvements through the department’s Crime Prevention Deputies as well as

involving the Town of Parma Building Inspector and Fire Marshall. As a result of the continued risk to public safety, the MCSO is working with Chinappi to immediately resolve the situation. All firearms have been removed from the building and will remain with the Sheriff ’s Office until both the federal and state regulatory processes are completed. Hilton Girl Scouts earn Silver Award Congratulations to Hilton Girl Scout Troop 60889 for earning their Silver Award. Calleigh Farley, Regan Griffs, Shelby McGranaghan, Meghan Kiser and Madison Klee have all completed the highest award a Cadette Scout can receive. Each scout spent over 50 hours towards identifying, solving and implementing take action projects to better serve the Hilton community.

The scouts started their project by building a new bottle/ can recycle bin out of recycled pallets for the Kathleen Anne Tenny Animal Shelter. Next, they helped the Hilton Department of Public Works by painting new and current benches for the town. Lastly, they built two new stanading flower boxes forthe Parma Christian Fellowship Church. Churchville-Chili announces inductees for the 2018 Athletic Hall of Fame Churchville-Chili High School is making preparations to honor five new members to its Athletic Hall of Fame. The 2018 inductees will be recognized for their accomplishments and contributions to the school’s athletics program in a special ceremony on December 7, 2018. John Carr – Class of 1995. Carr is the only male in school history to win an individual state championship. He accomplished this in 1995 in the indoor track 55 meter hurdles. He also won three Section V Indoor Track titles and set numerous school records in both indoor track and track and field. Many of these are still school records today. His success also helped lead the Saints’ track and field team to winning three consecutive division titles in 1992-94. David Harvey-Bowen – Class of 1998. Harvey-Bowen played three years of varsity football and was a pioneer in putting C-C Saints football on the map in the early stages of the school’s program. He led the Saints to their first trip to the Section V finals in 1997. Harvey-Bowen rushed for 21 touchdowns in 1997, which is still tied for the school record. He was the first Saints football player to ever be named 1st team All-Greater Rochester, the Golden Fifty All-State Football team, and the Governors Bowl All-Star game. Mimi Rague – Class of 1981. The 1981 C-C Female Athlete of the Year was a four-sport athlete with a total of 14 varsity letters in soccer, basketball, volleyball and softball. Rague is clearly one of the best all-around female athletes in school history. She was a captain of all four sports and had great success in all. She was a leading scorer on the soccer and basketball teams, set school records in multiple sports, helped lead the 1979-80 volleyball team to a 20-2 record and the school’s first division title, and also helped lead the softball team to its first division title in 1979. Coach Paul Setter. Setter is the first coach to be inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame. He coached varsity baseball for six years from 1962-67, years that saw the school win two Monroe County division titles. He coached

varsity boys’ soccer for 14 years from 196174 when his teams won two Monroe County division titles and three Section V titles. He accumulated 128 wins as a boys’ soccer coach, which is the most in school history for this sport. His outstanding career led him to be inducted into the Section V Boys Soccer Hall of Fame. Bernie Voorheis – Class of 1939, Post Graduate 1940. A standout basketball player, Voorheis was a captain and scoring leader of the Churchville-Chili team who helped lead the Saints to win the Monroe County division title and a trip to the Section V finals in 1940. This team finished 15-4 and is one of only two boys’ basketball teams in school history to make it to the Section V finals. After high school, Voorheis went on to play professional basketball, including being a member of the 1945-46 Rochester Royals, who won the National Basketball League championship. “Our first Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony last year was a huge success,” said Churchville-Chili Athletic Director Michael Murray. “We want to continue this tradition each year. The goal is for our students, student-athletes, coaches and community members to appreciate our history and know that they can aspire to great things if they work hard and set their goals high. Every one of our new Hall of Fame members has made an exceptional impact on our program, and deserves to be celebrated and remembered, and to serve as a role model for our current generation to aspire to.” The 2018 Athletic Hall of Fame presentation will be held in the Middle School Gym C. It will follow the girls’ basketball game (vs. Webster Thomas, which starts at 5:30 p.m.) at around 6:45 p.m. It will be followed by boys’ basketball (vs. Webster Thomas) at 8 p.m. The Churchville-Chili High School Athletic Hall of Fame celebrates the accomplishments of outstanding athletes, coaches, administrators and anyone who has made a significant contribution to Saints athletics. Retired Spencerport teacher publishes book of family lore Retired Spencerport HS English teacher, Steve Clarke, has spent much of his retirement working on the family history and genealogy for his own family and for his wife Mary’s, also a Spencerport retiree. Clarke just published his fifth volume of family lore, The Reverend Sylvanus Holly: His Ancestors and Descendants. This work is a study of the first ten generations of Mary’s family in North America starting in England in 1593 and continuing through to the middle of the 20th century to conclude with her parents’ generation. Subsequent generations are not included as too many of them are still living and problems with identity theft are a concern. The work considers the lives of 261 ancestors and descendants of the Rev. Sylvanus Holly (1760-1820) and fills 300 pages that include extensive documentation, 96 illustrations of various types and an every name index of 1151 people. Two of the Rev. Holly’s sons were asked by their father to change the surname to Hawley - Mary’s line - which they did. Their siblings continued to use Holly except for one who liked Holley better. The village of Holley is named for Myron Holley of Erie Canal fame who is one of Mary’s cousins. Another cousin is Birdsall Holly whose huge manufacturing plant in Lockport produced, amongst many other things, all the equipment necessary for a pressurized fire-fighting systems including pumps and hydrants. The basic ideas Holly invented are still in use. Mary’s own line involved three generations who worked for the Buffalo, Rochester and Pittsburgh Railway in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Mary’s great-grandfather, John S. Hawley, started the “Peapicker Excursions” to transport people to Rochester by train from all along the Genesee Valley. The name “Peapicker Excusions” refers to Hawley’s method for rewarding the men, women and children who worked for him to harvest the many acres of green peas he planted annually. The excursions ran for about 40 years until WWI and the advent of inexpensive automobiles ended them. Clarke’s other works of genealogy include two monographs recounting the military service exploits of two uncles. One, Michael O’Brien, served in the Spanish American War, the Philippines Insurrection, the Boxer Rebellion and World War I on the Western Front. O’Brien was wounded on the way into Beijing where, curiously enough, he was going to help rescue some American missionaries

The other monograph deals with his uncle Paul Grieb’s service in WWII after he went ashore at Normandy and fought his way across Europe to Prague, Czechoslovakia. There are also two books, one about his ancestors’ service in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812 and Civil War, and a study of his mother’s German, Swiss and Irish immigrant families. All of them are fully illustrated and documented. Clarke shares his work with his family and donates copies to major genealogical research libraries and societies. Sanctuary cities Joe Robach voted to end sanctuary cities in New York State (S.3698). Studies show that sanctuary cities are safer than non-sanctuary cities. A study by Center on Juvenile and Criminal Justice stated, “But overall, African-American, Latino, Asian and Native-American residents generally experience greater safety in countries with at least some sanctuary policies.” Another study by Tom K. Wong, from University of California-San Diego found “35.5 fewer violent and property crimes per 10,000 people versus non-sanctuary ones.” The report also states “The data supports arguments made by law enforcement executives that communities are safer when law enforcement agencies do not become entangled in federal immigration enforcement efforts.” Why does Mr. Robach want to make Rochester less safe?

Girl Scouts gift a Little Library to Clarkson In early spring, the Clarkson Town Board was approached by Girl Scout Troop 60233 with the idea of building a Little Library for the town. With this project they will achieve the Silver Award, the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn, demonstrating they are leaders, organized, determined, and dedicated to improving your community. Little libraries have become popular and grew out of the simple idea of “give a book, take a book” exchanges, usually in a small enclosed case and placed in a public area for easy access by residents.

As the town board meeting continued with discussion about the specifics of the project, Chad Fabry, building inspector for the town, was also in attendance. He told those present that a few years prior he had purchased the former Swan Library in the Village of Albion and then generously offered to start the little library out with books from this historic building. The town board was enthusiastic and gladly accepted this project on behalf of the residents. Hafner Park was identified as the ideal location and Councilperson Christa Filipowicz would be the liaison for the project and assist with logistics.

Girls Scouts Kate Bieler, McKenna Nicholls and Julia Nenni then began working on the little library. They designed the weatherproof structure details, learned to use various power tools, chalk lines, caulking and nail guns. The result is a beautifully painted little library with a park-like flower theme. The windowed door provides a glimpse at the books inside. In addition to the Clarkson library they are also building a library for Hamlin Beach that will have a beach landscape painting, and another for the Sweden Clarkson Recreation Center that will have a sports theme decor. Nenni stated there were many cookie sales to raise the money needed for the three libraries, and both Stull Lumber and Lowes donated materials and supplies. In addition, the troop wrote letters to other Girls Scout troops describing their project and asking for donations of books. Troop leaders Vikki Nenni, Roxanne Bieler and Renee Nicholls are proud of their troop’s accomplishments which also included the bench at the Clarkson’s Memorial Park on Ridge Road, created for their Bronze Award. Last week the completed library was delivered to Bob Viscardi, highway superintendent, for installation on the walking bridge into the children’s playground. Restoration of Hilton’s Klock clock is complete The Village of Hilton saved funds for quite a while to refurbish the four-faced Victorian-style clock in the center of Hovey Square, but even that was not quite enough. Mayor Joe Lee procured three major donations to complete the refurbishing process. Donations came from the HiltonParma-Hamlin Chamber of Commerce, Hilton Family Restaurant in honor of Tommy and Maria Strebenis, and Thomas E. Burger Funeral Home in honor of the many families who have been served since 1976.

A bronze plaque was installed to commemorate this renovation process and the donations that made it possible. A dedication ceremony and ribbon cutting was held Wednesday, August 8. Protecting our Great Lakes continued from front page Another of Bleier’s current projects is working on a program to present to students K-12 on awareness of plastics and ways to reduce single use plastics and to introduce sustainable, long-term alternatives for use in daily living. She also wants to convey the fact that recycling is important, but it is not enough. Bleier will share the awareness of the role the Great Lakes play in our lives and our region’s ecology, not only for recreational uses but also for our drinking water and food and the importance of keeping the lakes clean for all generations of wildlife and the millions of people that depend on our lakes. at Turning Point Park, 260 Boxart Street in Rochester and on October 6 at Ontario Beach Park, 50 Beach Avenue, Rochester. Cleanups start at 10 a.m. and wrap up at noon with a debris weigh in and group photo. There is a role for everyone that wants to participate. Volunteers are broken up into groups of three to four people and each member is assigned a job. Jobs include logging information on data sheets, carrying the bag and picking up debris. After each cleanup, Bleier goes through the individual bags of garbage to log the data, 60 percent of the debris picked up can be recycled, the other 40 percent is disposed of properly. Internationally acclaimed Trisha Brown Dance Company to perform in Brockport The College at Brockport’s Department of Dance presents two performances from the internationally acclaimed Trisha Brown Dance Company on Thursday and Friday, September 6 and 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the Hartwell Dance Theater in Hartwell Hall, Kenyon Street, on the Brockport campus. Tickets are $17/General, $12/Senior Citizens, Brockport Alumni, Faculty and Staff, and $9/Students. They will be available online at http://fineartstix.brockport.edu starting on August 20. The Tower Fine Arts Center Box Office will reopen on Monday, August 27, when tickets will be able to be purchased by phone at 395-2787, or in person at 180 Holley Street, Brockport. The performances will feature a question and answer session after the performance on Thursday, and a public reception after the performance on Friday. While the company will be in residence in Brockport, they will be reaching out to the Rochester community through a master class for dance students at the University of Rochester, and with a lecture/demonstration that is open to the public on Wednesday, September 5, at 11:10 a.m. in the Rose L. Strasser Studio in Hartwell Hall on the Brockport campus. According to professor emerita Jacquie Davis, who invited and coordinated the troupe’s visit to Western New York, the thing about Brown’s choreography is that “the dances all remain new, fresh, and vital, with an organic sensuality and clarity of form. And the dancers are stunningly beautiful.” In the short opening piece, “Accumulation,” patterns of movements would develop,

and then intrude upon each other, often conflicting with the pattern you were expecting. As Brown herself said in an interview, “When ninety-nine per cent of the body is moving to the right, I will stick something out to the left . . . to set up some sort of reverberation between the two.” “Groove and Countermove,” part of a jazz trilogy, reveals an intricate world of counterpoint between one dancer and the company, the dance itself, Dave Douglas’ music, and the frenetic energy of the movement set against Terry Winters’ visual design. Whether engaged in bold unison phrases or catapulting each other through the air, the dancers create an intriguing environment, at once easy-going and vitally expressive. In “Geometry of Quiet,” Brown’s second work set to the music of Salvatore Sciarrino, she matched the poignancy and delicacy of the music with choreography that implies a personal, emotional intimacy. The organic sounds of the flute seem to emanate from the sail-like banners that form the first theatrical set designed by Brown herself. Rounding out the program will be two works from the 1970s, “Locus Trio,” and “Watermotor,” as well as one from the 1990s, “If you couldn’t see me.” If tickets are still available at performance time, they will be available for purchase at the Hartwell Box Office one hour prior to each performance. Sporterifle is an indoor “postal” 22 caliber rimfire rifle competitive league open to shooters of all ages and experience levels. Over 50 teams participate statewide. The shooting position is off-hand standing at a fixed target 50 feet away. Expensive shooting equipment is not required. The club has a number of firearms available for shooters who do not have their own. The league is open to club members and to the general public. Beginning September 11, participants may join and shoot at 12:30 p.m. or 5:30 p.m. Alternatively, enrollment and shooting also takes place on September 14 at 5:30 p.m. Competition is weekly. Participants may shoot at any of the three available times on Tuesdays or Fridays. Beginning in September, the league typically runs through the fall and winter into February. There is a final “championship/trophy shoot” at the end of the season Interested participants should plan to attend on either September 11 or 14. Bring a full box of 22 rimfire target shells. There is a modest cost to join the league and a minimal weekly cost to shoot. Junior shooters (ages 12-18) are not required to pay a league fee. The club fee is $1 for juniors. A Bowhunters course is scheduled for September 7 and 8 and a Hunter Education (required for a small game or large game license) is planned for October 11 and 13. by Joe Reinschmidt Hi Folks! My scribe tells me some of you have asked about me. It is comforting to know that your interest and concern about me continues. I’m not sure just what occurred this spring and summer to allow me to “leaf out” the way I did. Those of you who pass by regularly must have noticed that my figure is fuller than I can ever recall. Healthy leaves just sprouted out from every little branch, as evidenced by the picture included herewith. I’m also very happy to once again be surrounded by a farmer’s crop in the entire field. Can’t really tell what it is but it is low growing and totally covers the acres I have a view of. That means there will probably be farm help, actual humans in the field for harvesting. You know I don’t care what color they are, where they came from or whether they are legal or illegal. They will be welcome to rest in my shade as needed, like so many have done over the many years of my existence. As limited as it was, I really miss that contact. It is my hope that you all enjoy a safe and happy summer. Since I don’t travel there is no concern about injury from an accident and a water incident is highly unlikely. However, there is my old nemesis - a lighting strike, that I can’t get away from. Thunderstorms have been limited so far this year and I sure hope it stays that way. Enjoy yourself and you will enjoy everything.
