Northwood students celebrate Computer Science Education Week with Hour of Code Northwood Elementary School students received the opportunity to take part in a one-hour introduction to computer science designed to demystify code and show that anyone can learn the basics. The Hour of Code is organized by Code.org, a notfor-profit working toward expanding participation in computer science by making it available in more schools, and increasing participation by females and students of color. Code.org encouraged students around the country to try an Hour of Code during Computer Science Education Week – December 7 through 13. In the Hilton School District, Ed Donnelly, Northwood teacher, asked his fellow teachers to have their students watch an introductory two-minute video, and then try one of the Hour of Code tutorials during their computer time. Third through sixth grade students interested in pursuing code further had an opportunity to spend an hour coding with him. The students were then encouraged to continue coding on their own at home using additional tutorials. “I learned how to make my own version of a game by using correct sequences to code movements,” said Kayla Anstett, a sixth grader in Laura Mayer’s class. “I also learned how the angles effect how a character would move.” “Every student should have the opportunity to learn computer science,” said Donnelly. “It helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. By starting early, students will have a foundation for success in any 21st century career path.”

(State Point) Nearly 99 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home during the holiday season, according to AAA. So how does one ensure it’s the most wonderful time of the year for guests and hosts, alike? Don’t wait until the last minute to tidy up. Instead, prepare the home with these helpful tips. Mudroom makeover It’s the first place guests see when they step inside the house. But it’s also where coats are strewn about, shoes are kicked off and winter gear is hung out to dry. Declutter with a row of hooks to hang items, and a bench to sit down and pull on boots. Donate coats that are no longer worn; and temporarily store seldom-used garments in a vacuum sealed bag to make additional space for visitors’ belongings. Or, simply buy an inexpensive coat rack that can be placed near the front door so visitors have a place to hang outerwear. Gorgeous guest bathroom The powder room and guest bath are perhaps the most heavily trafficked areas of the home during the holiday season. Before visitors arrive, make sure the space is both functional and stylish. To give overnight guests a truly spa-like experience,

Hotel hospitality Thoroughly clean the guest room. Dust baseboards, drapes and window blinds, and don’t forget the headboard and footboard. Freshen up carpeting and rugs by sprinkling baking soda over the area. Wait 15 minutes and then vacuum. One can also make stale smells disappear with potpourri; make originals by placing holiday scents, such as cinnamon sticks or nutmeg in a bowl. Or, eliminate this step by hiring a professional cleaning crew -- think of it as an early holiday gift to yourself. Ensure guests get VIP treatment with crisp linens, cozy blankets and plush mattress toppers. Make it easy for them to acclimate to the unfamiliar space by adding a night light. It’s an easy way to keep visitors from falling in the middle of night, and provides extra comfort for young ones who may not travel often. Having a plan will help make the holidays stress-free. Focus on these areas ahead of time, so can enjoy the season as much as your guests.

Labor Day. These efforts receive full support with funding from both the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). While STOP-DWI efforts across New York have led to significant reductions in the numbers of alcohol and drug related fatalities, still too many lives are being lost because of crashes caused by drunk or impaired drivers. Highly visible, highly publicized efforts like the STOP-DWI Crackdown Campaign aim to further reduce the incidence of drunk and impaired driving. He first became interested in sports broadcasting around age eleven when he enjoyed watching Barry Melrose on ESPN. “In high school I was more indifferent,” Winthrop explains. He played baseball growing up and has never played hockey. “It was at Brockport I realized this is what I want to do.” He says his experiences at WBSU-FM 89.1 the Point at the College at Brockport, helped spark his interest in broadcasting and has opened doors for him in the industry. While at the Point, he called high school hockey games for three seasons and one season of college hockey in addition to being operations manager of the station his final year. WBSU General Manager Warren “Koz” Kozireski was especially helpful, Winthrop says. “Koz gets a lot of credit,” he explains. “Hundreds of people have come out of there (the Point). He is a mentor to many students. We keep in contact and I seek his advice. It’s great to still have him as a resource. He is so helpful.”

Brockport Police to particiate in STOPDWI Crackdown for Holiday Season Members of the Brockport Police Department will add additional patrols throughout various shifts this upcoming holiday season in an effort to deter intoxicated driving. Christmas and New Years have a history as a deadly period for impaired driving. New York State Police, County Sheriff and municipal law enforcement agencies across the state will be out in force to reduce the number of alcohol related injuries and deaths during the season. The STOP-DWI Holiday Season Crackdown is one of many statewide enforcement initiatives promoted by the New York State STOP-DWI Foundation. The Statewide STOP-DWI Crackdown Campaign also targets Super Bowl weekend, St. Patrick’s Day, Memorial Day, July 4 Holiday and

Matt Winthrop of Chili says he loves his work as a radio producer/broadcaster for iHeartMedia (formerly Clear Channel) in Rochester. “I like being on the air, I love being in front of a camera,” he says. “I enjoy talking and giving my opinion and interacting with listeners.” Winthrop - a 2009 graduate of Churchville-Chili High School and a 2014 graduate of the College at Brockport - is the new pre, post and between periods radio host for all Rochester Amerks games broadcast on Fox Sports 1280 WHTK this season. “Don Stevens (the Voice of the Rochester Americans) calls the games and I work with him,” Winthrop explains. He began working for iHeartMedia/Clear Channel during his last year at Brockport - behind the scenes at first, running the board and producing games. “I’ve been climbing the ladder since then,” Winthrop says. His current duties continue to include the production side of the Amerks broadcast as well as previewing games, selecting highlights (he watches the games on his laptop from the studio) and playing game highlights and interviews. The post-game shows he hosts include taking texts and phone calls from listeners - something he has come to enjoy. “I know some callers by their name and voice. I appreciate them calling in, it helps me out,” he says. He notes the step-up to being on-air was most challenging the first couple of weeks of the season, but being familiar with the behind-the-scenes production side of the broadcast helped to calm any anxiety. He says he doesn’t get nervous in front of the mic or the camera and additionally does TV play-by-play of high school hockey for WBTG - My 18 Sports in Rochester. “I love it,” he says of broadcasting and hopes to move ahead with his on-air work and eventually call professional games. “I want to do a play-by-play position in the near future,” Winthrop says.

Hilton Capital Maintenance and Safety Project approved by voters On December 8, Hilton School District residents approved a $2,650,000 Capital Maintenance and Safety Project by a vote of 348 in favor to 222 opposed. The project will have no impact on local property taxes. Revenue will come from available NYS Building Aid, the District Capital Reserve Fund and NYS EXCEL Aid. The project includes a cost efficient package sewer treatment plant, which is a pre-engineered and pre-fabricated method of treating wastewater with an aerobic pro-

cess, at Northwood Elementary School. The project also includes the reconstruction of pavement at the Merton Williams Aquatic Center and Village Elementary School bus loop and back parking lot. At Hilton High School’s LeBeau Field, site modifications to the entry and walkways from the parking lot to the stands will separate pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Construction will take place at Northwood next summer and the remainder of the project in the summer of 2017. Provided information

Churchville-Chili graduate panel: Preparing for life after high school Churchville-Chili High School invites parents and high school students to come out for an informative evening as several of its recent graduates reflect on their experiences at Churchville-Chili and how prepared they were for life after high school. Opinion/Comments Where is the Christ of Christmas?

Dave Ess (left) and Post Commander Gil Budd (right) of the Harvey C. Noone Post #954 American Legion in Churchville prepare cookies to take and distribute to veterans at the VA Hospital in Batavia this holiday season. K. Gabalski photo.

Where is the Christ of Christmas? Do we live in America, the land of the free and the brave? Then tell me why is everyone becoming so afraid to Keep Christ in Christmas? What is it with all the Happy Holidays and Hanukkah and trees and Santa, but no manger scene? The greatest gift ever given to man was Jesus and yet somehow with all the political correctness, diversity, tolerance and unwillingness to offend, we have totally diregarded the most important event in scripture. (Except

for His second coming). Christ was God’s gift to the whole world to remind us he had not forsaken us. Emmanuel means - God with us. With the world in such chaos, let’s not forget the most important message God gave us in Scripture - Jesus is with us and He is coming again. Keep Christ in your Christmas, but more important, keep Him in your heart. Silent night, holy night ... Cheryl Beardslee Brockport

The Power of Energy Efficiency In today's environmentally challenged, energy conscious world, it pays to be efficiency minded when considering the energy features of a prospective property. According to the National Association of Home Builders, there are specific elements that identify energy efficient homes. An educated homebuyer should be familiar with each one. Look for double paned windows with low-e coating that conserve heat during the winter and deflect the summer sun. Confirm that the house is fortified with the proper amount of insulation in the roof, walls and floor. Check that the heating and air conditioning systems are as energy efficient as possible. Heating and air conditioning account for up to fifty percent of a home's utility bill. Take note of the landscaping around the home. Intelligent placement of trees and shrubbery can have a significant impact on cooling your home. Consult Energy Guide labels when choosing your lighting fixtures and appliances. The label will estimate the operating costs of that particular item. Although it may be a challenge to take everything into account now, when the first utility bill arrives in the mail you will be happy you took the time and improved your "energy I.Q."
