New Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum director wraps up first year in the post by Kristina Gabalski Nora Venezky says she has the best office space in the Village of Spencerport. That’s because she is the director of the Spencerport Depot & Canal Museum, located at 16 East Avenue, on the southern bank of the Erie Canal. The Spencerport native and 2008 graduate of Spencerport High School took over the reins from Doreen Castano in January 2016, and she says the experience is proving to be very exciting for her.

“I am trying to get everyone who lives in Spencerport to come in at least once,” she explains. “I want to make people more aware and have them appreciate this.” Although she is young, Nora has an extensive background in history and museum studies to bring to the post. She graduated from SUNY Oneonta in 2012 with a degree in history and art and then received her master’s in museum studies from the University of Toronto in 2014.

She completed an internship at Genesee Country Museum and then at the Spencerport Depot & Canal Museum while she was a graduate student. “I love museums,” Nora says. “They are a blend of my passions and interests.” As soon as she received her master’s degree, Nora was hired by the Depot & Canal Museum board to document and organize the museum’s object collection. She was hired as assistant director to Doreen Castano before becoming director nearly one year ago. The post is a part-time job, Nora explains, but she is also very involved in the Spencerport/Ogden community, serving as village historian and deputy Town of Ogden historian. She is also busy as a member of the committee planning the Ogden Bicentennial/Spencerport Sesquicentennial in 2017. Nora says her first season as director has been wonderful. “We had great attendance, 4,000 people through this year,” she says. Two hundred boaters docked with the Depot & Canal Museum this summer - the museum also functions as the Spencerport visitor center - meaning it offers information and amenities for those boating on the Erie Canal. “We had people from all over the world - Japan, New Zealand, Brazil ... people don’t realize the tourism we get in Spencerport,” Nora says. “It’s a favorite stop for boaters.” Grant writing is an important part of the

job, Nora explains. This year a Genesee Valley Arts grant helped to fund Heritage Day programs and Nora hopes to receive similar funding in the future. Next season the focus of museum displays will shift from local technology roots to more local history in general, she says, in honor of the village and town anniversary years. “2017 is also the bicentennial of when construction on the Erie Canal began,” she adds. Nora says she hopes to set up an interactive corner for children and focus exhibits on canal history as well as town and village history. She says that the town and village have monthly events planned throughout the year to mark the bicentennial/sesquicentennial. The favorite part of her job is meeting people, “from so many walks of life. I love to hear their stories,” Nora says. Her experience of traveling the entire length of the canal has also helped her to gain knowledge of where various points of interest are located outside of Spencerport. She encourages anyone to travel the canal by boat, bike or by hiking along the trail. “It’s a great way to see New York State,” she says. “So often we just get on the Thruway.” Working as director is, “very cool,” Nora observes. “I have learned so much about Spencerport, especially the canal. It is an amazing piece of history that continues to have an impact today.”

Rangers win first state title by Warren Kozireski The Spencerport girls’ soccer team trounced Section I champion Pearl River 6-0 in the New York State semi-finals before beating top-ranked JamesvilleDeWitt 2-1 in come-from-behind fashion at SUNY Cortland to bring home the school’s first state title as well as finish #4 in the nation in the final USA Today poll. The Rangers entered the finals with eight consecutive shutouts, but it was Jamesville-Dewitt who found the net first early in the first half. They started the season on a mission after being upset in the opening round of last season’s Section V tournament as the top seed.

But Spencerport rebounded less than ten minutes later as Leah Wengender found Erin Coykendall for the tying goal. The Rangers then took a 2-1 lead before the half ran out as Leah Martone crossed to Coykendall, who headed it into the net. The Rangers finished their nearly perfect campaign with a 21-0-2 record. The core of the team will return next season, but seven seniors accomplished the rare feat of ending their high school soccer careers with a win including Sarah Honan, co-captain Isabella DiGuardi, Tori Macias, co-captain Chandler Stephany, Brooke Antinoro, Olivia Icobelli and Maliah Benedetto.

Students and community members Make a Difference for the ninth year

Aidan Harney, his mom Stephanie Harney (center), and Parma Town Clerk Donna Curry install a name plate on the new Little Free Library at Parma Town Hall. The library was made possible by Hilton Cares, an organization dedicated to projects that impact the health and well being of children in the Hilton School District. Provided photo.

Over 100 volunteers were involved in projects throughout the community, including: sorting and collecting food for Hilton-Parma Emergency Food Shelf; visiting and doing activities with residents at Hilton East; making flowers for chemotherapy patients; collecting gently used coats, hats and mittens; sponsoring a blood drive; helping with the Hilton-Parma Recreation Halloween festivities; and installing a Little Free Library at Parma Town Hall. The events were held in conjunction with open houses at the Hilton Fire Department and Hilton School District Transportation Department. Make a Difference Day usually includes several outdoor projects as well, but the heavy rain called for cancellation. “Regardless of outdoor events being cancelled, our Halloween Event with the Open Houses truly made a difference to our community,” said Tom Venniro, Parma Parks and Recreation director. “We estimate that around 500 people passed through the event to enjoy exercise walking from location to location; fun activities, including face painting, games, magic and more; safety demonstrations; and plenty of free food.” Food was donated by Hilton-Parma Recreation, Caraglio’s, Tops Friendly Markets, Hilton-Parma Emergency Food Shelf and Hilton Lions Club. “So many community members and groups coming together this way is rare and a testament to what this community is about,” said Venniro. Volunteers gathered in the cafeteria at Hilton High School both before and after volunteering where they enjoyed breakfast and lunch donated by the Latta Road Wegmans store. Brockport teacher named 2016 Outstanding Biology Teacher for NY A Brockport High School teacher has been named the 2016 Outstanding Biology Teacher for New York by the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT). Rosemary Catlin will be recognized by NABT and the Carolina Biological Supply Company at the NABT Honors Luncheon in Denver, Colorado on November 5, 2016. Catlin has been a dedicated teacher in the Brockport Central School District for more than 25 years. Throughout her years in the district she has made a lasting impact on students and colleagues alike. She immerses her students with knowledge during lessons inside and out of the classroom. Some of her many noteworthy lessons involve hatching baby chickens, raising and releasing 200 trout, beekeeping and navigating the Genesee River on board the “Floating Classroom” paddleboat. “We are so proud of this accomplishment for Rosemary,” said Assistant to the Super-

Attorney & Counselor at Law

intendent for Secondary Instruction Dr. Rachel Kluth. “The impact that Rosemary has on the students and her colleagues is infectious. Her passion is contagious and models the way for being a thoughtful steward of the environment.” “Rosemary brings an unparalleled passion for life and learning to every class she teaches,” said Brockport High School Assistant Principal Jeremy Moore. “She is an excellent educator not only because of the stately wealth of knowledge she possesses, but more so because of the degree to which she cares about each one of the young people that walk into her class.” In addition to recognition at the honors luncheon, Catlin will receive a certificate, a one-year membership to NABT and resources from Carolina Biological Supply Company, Flinn Scientific and Population Connection. FASNY offers fire safety advice for Thanksgiving Thanksgiving: busiest day of the year for home fires As New Yorkers make plans to gather with friends and family to celebrate Thanksgiving, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York urges all to have a happy, safe holiday. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), unattended cooking and cooking accidents are responsible for the majority of home fires and fire deaths. Thanksgiving is the busiest day of the year for cooking fires and in 2013, the holiday saw 230 percent more fires reported than the daily average. “This is one of the most joyous times of the year, when we gather with family and friends to enjoy one another’s company,” said FASNY President Ken Pienkowski. “FASNY asks all New Yorkers to follow these simple steps and advice to ensure that their holiday is a safe and happy one, and we wish everybody a very Happy Thanksgiving.” In addition to exercising caution when cooking, having working smoke alarms is critical in protecting against fires. Three of every five home fire deaths in the United States occurs in homes without smoke alarms or working smoke alarms. In 2015, legislation was passed and signed in Albany that will require all smoke alarms sold in New York State to be equipped with sealed-in, non-removeable batteries capable of powering the device for at least ten years. These alarms do not require battery changes during their lifespan, and greatly reduce the possibility of human error. The new legislation takes effect in 2017. The most common factors in home cooking fires and ways to avoid them: Unattended cooking The leading cause of fires in the kitchen: Stay in the kitchen while frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short time, turn off the stove. If simmering, baking, roasting, or boiling food, check it regularly. Remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer as a reminder while it cooks, as guests, phones, children, pets and other activity can easily distract a cook. Objects near the cooking catching fire Clothing ignitions are common in home cooking fire deaths. It is important to wear

short, close-fitting, or tightly rolled sleeves as loose clothing can dangle onto stove burners or gas flames and catch fire. Keep the cooking area clean and combustible materials away from the stove top. Built-up grease as well as oven mitts, food packaging, wooden utensils, towels, curtains and other materials on or near the stove can catch fire. Cooking equipment unintentionally turned on or not turned off Be on alert. If sleepy or have consumed alcohol don’t use the stove or stovetop. Have children turned the stove on? Deep-frying turkeys Turkey fryers that immerse the turkey in cooking oil at high temperatures pose a significant danger of hot oil being released or spilled during cooking, leading to devastating burns, other injuries and property destruction. Hot cooking oil exposed to water or outdoor elements If rain or snow strikes hot cooking oil in propane-fired turkey fryers designed for outdoor use, the result can be a splattering of the hot oil or a conversion of the precipitation to steam, which can lead to burns. Frozen and defrosting turkeys also create the risk of contact between water and hot cooking oil, which can cause severe scalding or other serious injury. Never fry a frozen turkey. Source: NFPA If a fire occurs: •Just get out! When leaving, close the door to help contain the fire. •Call 911 or the local emergency number. •For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed. •Do not use water to put out a grease fire. Use an appropriate fire extinguisher, or baking soda, salt, or a tight lid. Keep the lid nearby when cooking, to smother small grease fires. Smother the fire by sliding the lid over the pan and turn off the stovetop. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled. Always keep a box of baking soda near the stove. Visit the NFPA’s website (www.nfpa.org) for more information on fire safety. Provided information

Library donates to Craig A. Goodrich Dog Shelter - Each summer, patrons of the Hamlin Public Library participate in a community give-back event. This year families donated items to the Hamlin Dog Shelter. Isabella Haberger, a very active library patron and volunteer, decorated a large box and the library started accepting donations. Along with a variety of clean sheets and towels, some more interesting items collected included dog coats, leashes and dog biscuits. At the Town of Hamlin board meeting on November 14, Isabella and Susan Carlson, the children’s and teen services library assistant, officially presented the donations to Dave Maynard, the Hamlin Dog control officer. Senator Schumer seeks tax credits for Old Holley High renovation by Kristina Gabalski New York Senator Charles Schumer says he will work hard to ensure that the proposed project to transform the old Holley High School into senior housing and Holley Village office space will receive tax credits. Senator Schumer was in the Village of Holley November 11 to announce that he is pushing to secure $3.7 million in housing and historic tax credits for the restoration/ renovation project proposed by Home Leasing, LLC of Rochester. Schumer called the project a labor of love by Nelson Leenhouts, chairman and CEO of Home Leasing. “This building has been for years and years vacant,” the senator said, “it has needed some real TLC for the last 30 years.” The tax credits are the “lynch pin” to move the project forward, Senator Schumer explained. He noted that federal investment is critical to making the project a reality. “I’ll be fighting tooth and nail to get this done,” he said. The old Holley High School was built in 1931 in the neo-classical revival style and the renovation proposal calls for 41 mixedincome units for seniors, new village office space and a restoration of the auditorium for public events. Specifically, Schumer is urging the National Parks Service and its state partner, the NYS Office of Historic Preservation, as well as the Treasury Department and its state partner, the NYS Office of Homes and Community Renewal to allocate more than $3 million in historic preservation tax credits and $700,000 in housing tax credits. Schumer said the housing credits will leverage more than $7.1 million in private investment as part of the overall $17 million redevelopment plan. The project is expected to create 64 construction jobs during the 15-month construction period and two full-time jobs once the construction is complete.

New York Senator Charles Schumer speaks outside the old Holley High School November 11. Behind Schumer is Larry Francer of the Landmark Society of Western New York. K. Gabalski photo. Village of Holley Mayor Brian Sorochty thanked village, town, Orleans County and state officials as well as Senator Schumer for their efforts on behalf of the project. “There is a huge spirit of cooperation,” Mayor Sorochty said. “Senator Schumer has been a huge advocate of the project and of the Village of Holley.” Developer Nelson Leenhouts attended the announcement. “We’ve never been welcomed with such open arms,” he said of the Holley and Orleans County community. “We are grateful for Senator Schumer’s unwavering support of the housing and historic tax credits necessary to save community landmarks like the Holley High School,” Leenhouts added in a statement. “Redevelopment of this community landmark will provide a significant economic boost to the community and provide 41 new, affordable apartments to area seniors who can age in a place near friends, families and houses of worship.”

Erie Canal Bicentennial to be celebrated in 2017 2017 marks the 200th anniversary of the beginning of Erie Canal construction. A number of statewide and local celebrations to honor the legacy of the Erie Canal will take place throughout the year. Statewide planning efforts are underway, guided by an Erie Bicentennial Committee directed by the NYS Canal Corporation. Several events in preparation include: •Kickoff celebration in Rome commemorating the ceremonial groundbreaking for the Erie Canal that took place in July 1817. •Waterway Tours by the replica canal schooner Lois McClure operated by the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, and orchestral tours by the Albany Symphony Orchestra and Syracuse Symphonia. •World Canals Conference in Syracuse, September 24 through 28, including major public events. •Erie Canal exhibit opening at the NYS Museum in Albany in the fall of 2017. •New York State grants offered by Canal Corporation and the NYS Council on the Arts, through Governor Cuomo’s Regional Economic Development Council program, are being targeted for bicentennial-related investments and community programs. Awards will be announced in December. Erie Canalway NHC, in partnership with the NYS Canal Corporation, will target a portion of 2017 festival and event sponsorship funds for community events that celebrate the bicentennial. Watch for applications in January. For more information, contact William Sweitzer at the NYS Canal Corporation at (518) 436-3055, William. Sweitzer@canals.ny.gov. Provided information

The Hunter He waits all year for hunter’s moon when eves turn crisp and bright As days grow short and warmth shall wane he pines for moonlit night Though leaves soon drop and colors fade to amber red and gold The Hunter smiles at season’s change and yearns for autumn’s cold At break of day and rising sun The Hunter can be found In solitude and deep in thought on sacred hunting ground He misses not the spoken word yet listens hours on end To voices of the rustling leaves and whispers of the wind It’s not the final victory that makes The Hunter whole It’s being one with nature that fulfills his very soul His feet have journeyed many miles on paths where no man trod And as he turns to head back home he’s made his peace with God by Laine Pastore Copyright 2010 May not be reprinted without permission

Comments An invitation to read stories of Brockport’s people and places Over the past 24 years as a freelance writer, I have written articles about interesting people and places in the Brockport area. I am pleased to share these stories through the kindness of Seymour Library. I invite you to peruse four portfolios with 150 of my human interest articles dating between 2016 and 1992 in the Westside News, Inc. newspapers. The retrospective is scheduled at Seymour Library from November 19 through December in the new Local History Room. The opening date coincides with this year’s “AFTER HOURS at the LIBRARY gala. The library is located at 161 East Avenue, Brockport. Phone 637-1050. I started freelance writing just before retiring from a career in college administration. The people in these stories first captured my attention in the daily course of my life in the Brockport area. The newspaper clippings were hidden in my files for almost a quarter of a century. Retrieving them and laying them out gave me a visual delight in the rich human fabric of our community. The woven threads are a variety of fascinating people and treasured places. For 23 years, I enjoyed the editorship of Evelyn Dow. She was editor for over 30 years and now is editor emeritus. This year I have appreciated the work of Kiri Patella Ryan, editorial assistant. She has been receptive to my suggested articles and, with the production staff, has provided appealing layouts. The 150 articles were written for the Suburban News and Hamlin-Clarkson Herald, publications of Westside News, Inc. in Spencerport. I am honored to have my writings in this community newspaper with its rich history dating back to the early 1950’s. The retrospective contains essays and articles in other publications. Included are essays on violence in our culture, written for the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle and Times Union between 1988 and 2013, and relevant today. From Genesee Country magazine, back to the 1990’s, there are articles on subjects such as Hurd Orchards, the restored waterwheel at Brown’s Race in Rochester, and the “ghost opera houses hidden in the “attics of area historic buildings. Students led the assembly, guiding the audience through a history of American music through their presentations and performances. The Elementary Chorus sang while the Elementary Band played the “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The chorus also sang “God Bless the USA” and “Thank You, Soldiers.” Following an introduction by senior

Claudia Drechsel, the band played “This is My Country,” along with “America the Beautiful.” Sixth grader Chris Lyndaker played “Bugle Call” and “Taps” on his trumpet. A group of local veterans from the American Legion and VFW posted and retired the colors to begin and end the assembly. Fifty local veterans were in attendance, representing all four branches of the military. Provided information

Tribute to valuable community members When Doug Wolcott died last Monday, Brockport lost one of its most valuable and beloved members. Doug died as he lived, causing nobody fuss or bother, quietly in bed. Although he was wheelchair-bound for many years, he was an exemplar of Brockport’s vibrant volunteer culture. He served on the Planning Board, the Tree Board, the Brockport Community Museum Board, and the Emily L. Knapp Museum Board. He and Jackie Morris kept the latter museum going for years with very little help. Most of all, Doug was the soul and the spirit of our canalside Welcome Center. He was an original Greeter and one of the most faithful. He and Sal Sciremammano covered a four-hour shift every Tuesday afternoon without fail every year. They took under their wing a young autistic man whom they made feel wanted and needed. There once was a girl in her early teens who came every afternoon to borrow a bike. Doug and Sal contrived to donate a bike to her, which became her most prized possession. They went out of their way to make visiting boaters and bikers feel at home, often driving them to Wegmans or Wal-Mart for shopping. I organized the Greeter program at the Welcome Center, but Doug soon began to help recruit substitutes when volunteers were unable to serve their shifts. Soon he was shouldering most of that burden and, eventually, took it over completely. He had a wonderful way of dealing with the Greeters. He always seemed embarrassed by having to ask them to substitute. He was never pushy and always gracious when you had to refuse him. He made people want to do the job.

Green Hut LLC is sad to announce that we will be closing December 31st.

The previous week, Brockport lost another pillar of that volunteer culture with the death of Jim Foote, the consummate musician. Jim used his enormous musical talent to entertain the community, but also to help raise funds for worthy causes. He jammed with the regulars at the Different Path Gallery on Sunday, went home, and died. His memorial service packed the Sweden Center. After a beautiful Unitarian service, some twenty fellow musicians jammed in Jim’s fashion for a couple of hours.

Village Elementary gets excited about reading Village Elementary School Principal Dr. Ben Rudd and Assistant Principal Stephanie Schaufelberger announced this year’s selection for One School, One Book in one very big way. Classes gathered in the gymnasium to hear the name of the book - “The Lemonade War” by Jacqueline Davies - and join either Dr. Rudd’s “pink team” or Ms. Schaufelberger’s “yellow team.” Village students and their families will read “The Lemonade War” and encouraging others to read it as well as part of One School, One Book, a program designed to create a shared reading experience within a single elementary school community. Each school chooses a chapter book, every family in the elementary school receives a copy, and every family reads that book at home over the course of a single month. A group of students also presented copies of the book to the Board of Education and administrators on October 25. This is the seventh year Village Elementary School in Hilton has participated in One School, One Book. In addition to the kick-off event, this is the second year that

the school has held a “Night at the Village” event where families can pick up their free copies of the book and have fun doing reading-related activities. This year, students could do a scavenger hunt around the school, read with dogs in the library, play games in the gymnasium, have their picture taken at a lemonade stand and blog with other students around the country about the book. “The Lemonade War” tells the story of an exciting summer spent by a loving but competitive pair of siblings, Evan and Jessie Treski. At the end of the summer, Jessie, the younger and more academically inclined of the two, is delighted to learn that because she is skipping third grade, she will be in Evan’s fourth-grade class when school starts in a few days. To say the least, Evan is less than thrilled. The children’s personal conflict becomes a professional one as well, as they set out to outsell each other at their respective lemonade stands. Studies have shown that reading to children helps them to listen better and longer, build bigger vocabularies,

Hamlin Morton Walker Fire District supports new Knox HomeBox® The Hamlin Morton Walker Fire District has established a new emergency Access program supporting the homeowners in the community of their Fire District using the new Knox® HomeBox™ Single key Vault. This will provide the Fire Department a rapid access system to homes for an emergency without forcing entry. The HomeBox is a heavy-duty secure key vault installed outside the home typically on or near the front door giving the Fire Department access. Once the homeowner has it installed, they contact the Fire Department at 964-2330 or hmwknox@hmwfire.com and arrange time for them to place their house key inside and lock it. Only their Fire Department can lock or unlock it and they keep the key secure when not in use. In a home emergency requiring assistance, if the people inside are unable to open the door or if they are not in the house, the responding fire crews can open the HomeBox and enter the house. They

avoid force entry and costly alternatives of breaking down the door or a window. Once the firefighters get inside they can address the situation and take appropriate action. When completed they will resecure the home and return the house key to the HomeBox. Chief Ken Keirn states, “Having home emergency access will assist us in saving people and property. The HomeBox will help us enter the home quickly without damaging property.” Knox President Joni Trempala stated, “We’re excited to offer the homeowner our new Knox Homebox, which the Fire Department can use to get fast access to you or your home in an emergency.” To learn more about the Knox HomeBox, visit KnoxHomeBox.com or call 855GET-KNOX (855-438-5669). Contact the Hamlin Morton Walker Fire District at 964-2330 or email hmwknox@hmwfire.com for questions. Provided information

Each week, 52 weeks a year, the area’s “Best Read” local newspaper, Suburban News or The Herald, is brought to you free of charge.

theme was “Hats Off to Being Drug Free!”, so students and staff sported crazy hats. On Wednesday, students wore tie-dye to match the theme “Don’t Get Tied Down with Drugs!” Following Thursday’s theme of “Shade Out Drugs!”, students and staff wore sunglasses. On Friday, students and staff showed their team spirit by wearing team jerseys for “Team up Against Drugs!” day. All students and staff signed stars that indicated their decisions to be drug-free and make positive choices in their lives. These stars will go on a yearlong display outside the gym as a visible reminder of the Kendall Elementary School community’s commitment to these choices. As a way of making good choices and showing care for the Kendall community, elementary students and staff collected non-perishable food for the Kendall Food Cupboard. Three hundred fifty-nine items were donated. This will help the food pantry during the upcoming holidays. Provided information

Kendall Elementary students celebrate Red Ribbon Week Kendall Elementary students spent the week of October 24 celebrating Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Week is a drug awareness week held each year in tens of thousands of schools across the nation in which schools focus on educating young people about the dangers and consequences of using drugs and other unhealthy choices. Red Ribbon Week began in honor of the efforts of Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena in 1985. He was kidnapped, tortured and killed for his undercover work in Mexico. For more information about Red Ribbon Week and DEA Agent Camarena, visit http://redribbon.org/about/. Kendall students spent time during the week talking about positive and healthy choices. Each day followed a fun theme, which helped students get involved. The themes also kicked off discussions in classrooms. On Monday, students and staff wore crazy, mixed up outfits as a reminder to not let drugs mix them up. Tuesday’s
