Final Civil War encampment features distinguished speakers The fourth and final Civil War Encampment put on by Genesee Community College to mark the 150th anniversary of the war that defined the nation promises to be one of the most interesting to date. The event is set for April 24-26 at GCC’s Medina Campus Center, 11470 Maple Ridge Road, Medina. The weekend will include an Education Day on Friday for local school districts, educational activities throughout the weekend including a nationally recognized Frederick Douglass impressionist, reenactments of skirmishes, artillery and cavalry, a surrender ceremony at noon in downtown Medina on Saturday, and a panel discussion featuring distinguished guests from the popular online journal The Emerging Civil War. The Emerging Civil War (ECW) was founded by Chris Mackowski and Kristopher White with a goal of providing fresh perspectives and original scholarship related to the American Civil War (1861-1865). GCC Assistant History Professor Derek Maxfield is a contributor to ECW and will moderate a panel discussion at the Encampment featuring Dr. Mackowski, a professor of journalism and mass communication at St. Bonaventure University, and historian Kris White, who teaches at the Community College of Allegheny County near Pittsburgh and previously served as staff military historian at Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military

Park in Virginia where he continues to volunteer. The discussion, “So What Have We Learned? The Sesquicentennial, The Civil War and American Memory” is set for 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 25, in the main tent at the Encampment. “The Civil War’s sesquicentennial has been a great opportunity to introduce people to America’s ‘great story,’ ” said Dr. Mackowski. “Even though the anniversary is wrapping up now, it’s the perfect time for people to ask ‘What did the Civil War mean? Why is it still relevant today, to me?’ … We love getting out on the front lines and talking with people about the war because it’s the best way to help nurture the public’s interest and help people understand it better,” said White. “I am so pleased that historians from the Emerging Civil War will be joining us for our last Civil War Encampment,” said Prof. Maxfield. “I have been very impressed by the caliber of work on ECW and was honored to be invited to join their ranks. To borrow a phrase, I think having a panel of ECW experts part of the Encampment schedule kicks things up a notch.” Learn more about ECW at its website http://emergingcivilwar.com/. ARC 2014 Top bowling fund raisers recognized Jerry Menzie has accomplished a feat that no other youth league bowler has for Genesee ARC. In eleven years, he has raised $10,200 participating in the Genesee ARC Bowl-A-Thon to benefit programs and services for people with disabilities in Genesee County. “He is ending on a high note,” Genesee ARC’s Sandy Konfederath said. “This is the last year Jerry is going to be in the Rose Garden Lanes Youth League, as he is going to be heading to college in the fall.” Jerry is an honor student at Byron-Bergen Central School. Along with the youth bowling league, where he carries a 187 average, Jerry is on a Genesee Region travel league for bowling. He also plays on the BBCS varsity golf team and is a percussionist in the school band. The Menzie family has been involved in this Genesee ARC fundraiser since it started 40 years ago. Jerry’s grandmother, the late Ellen Menzie, was the youth league bowling coordinator at the Rose Garden Lanes and a BowlA-Thon volunteer. Jerry’s father set a fund raising record when he was involved in youth bowling, raising $740 one year, a record broken by his son in 2009. Jerry’s younger sisters Jillian and Julia also participate in the Bowl-AThon, each raising $100 this year. The Menzie family’s older son and daughters also participated when they were youth league bowlers. Jerry thanks the Bergen community, family and friends for their Bowl-A-Thon pledges, particularly longtime supporters: LeRoy NAPA, Triple O Mechanical, BBT Construction, Greg’ry’s Bakery, TD Repair, Chark’s Glass, Fisher’s Service, Liberty Pumps, LoTurco Chiropractic, Miller’s Millwork and Ralph & Rosie’s. This year, with a lot of support from the community, Jerry raised $1,091.51 for the ARC Bowl-A-Thon, earning the top bowler status for a sixth year in a row. He recently had the chance to meet another top fund raiser, Ashley McCormack, at ARC’s Challenger Bowling Party, December 14 at Mancuso Bowling Center. Ashley, 13, raised an impressive $500 this year. Ashley is the daughter of Patrick and Sue McCormack of Darien. According to ARC’s Sandy Konfederath, “Ashley takes great pride in this event. She has been the top Challenger fund raiser for our Bowl-A-Thon for three years in a row.” Junior league bowlers at each of the four local lanes had the opportunity to participate in the Bowl-A-Thon. Top fund raisers at the other sites were: Terrence Asbrand - $425, LeRoy American Legion Lanes; Ryan Wolcott - $277.80 and Brad Pedro - $205, Scopano’s Paradise Lanes; Benjamin Sputore - $100 and Nate Goras - $100, Mancuso Bowling Center. Forty-five adults with disabilities participated in the Bowl-A-Thon raising more than $2,400 of the $7,800 raised this year. Jerry Menzie’s parents, Jerry and Tammy, are very pleased with what their son has accomplished. “We are so

Easter Egg Hunt prep underway in Hamlin

Every year, a few weeks before Easter, the Hamlin Royals Youth Group stuffs hundreds of plastic Easter Eggs for Hamlin Recreation’s annual Easter Egg Hunt. The Boy Scouts from Troop 324 distributes the filled eggs on the front lawn of Hamlin’s Town Hall in preparation for Hamlin’s younger residents who arrive eagerly clutching their baskets and bags. The front lawn is divided into two hunting areas, one for the older children and the other for the younger. Parents stand along the sidelines yelling encouragement during those intense moments while their children frantically try fitting yet another egg into their already overflowing baskets. This year will be no different from others, according to organizers. The Royals have done their job well and the Recreation Department staff is hoping for beautiful weather on Sunday, March 29 when once again everyone will gather for this exciting event. The Easter Egg Hunt will take place from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. and pre-registration

Hilton Community Indoor Flea Market Hilton Community Center 59 Henry Street Saturday, March 28, 2015 From 9am-3pm Rain or Shine! is required. Sponsors include Wegmans, Taco Bell, Wendy’s. For information call the Hamlin Recreation Department at (585) 964-7222. Provided information and photo.

Blessing of Easter Baskets at St. John’s Church St. John the Evangelist Church of Spencerport will hold its annual Blessing of the Easter Baskets on Saturday, April 4 at 3 p.m. According to the Polish tradition of Swieconka (pronounced “shvyehn-SOHNkah”), each food to be blessed in the basket symbolizes an aspect of the Easter Story. The elaborately decorated eggs called Pisanki, for example, represent hope and new life. The molded butter lamb and its red banner represent Jesus and the victory of life over death. Other traditional basket items include bread and cakes, kielbasa, ham or other cured meats, salt and horseradish. (The horseradish is meant to represent the bitter herbs of the original Passover meal, which also foretold the suf-

ferings of Jesus). While there are many regional variations on the contents and their meanings, the foods are almost always placed in a lined wicker basket and covered with a white linen cloth. The basket is then decorated with sprigs of boxwood, forsythia or pussy willows. Children fill their baskets with jelly beans, candy eggs and chocolate bunnies. On Holy Saturday, families bring their baskets to church to be blessed, and then share the foods with loved ones at their Easter Sunday celebration. All are welcome to bring their baskets and share in this special Easter blessing. The church is located at 55 Martha Street in the village.

More than 60 vendors will be selling their goods. A portion of the proceeds for this event will be given to the Friends of the Parma Public Library. Elevator available at north end of building for 2nd floor. Refreshments will be available.

DEEP DISTRESS CAUSED BY LOSS

Grieving encompasses a range of strong emotions that grip survivors in the wake of the loss of a friend or family member. The process may be likened somewhat to being cast adrift on a storm-tossed sea. There is the feeling of isolation, as well as the suspicion that nature has unleashed forces that challenge our very existence. In time, however, the storm passes and the sea, again, becomes tranquil. With the worst behind us, we are free to quietly recount our remembrances. It is then that we may be gripped with sorrow. This quiet emotion is characterized more by acceptance than either anger or depression. It shows that the grief

process is in its final throes. When a person dies, there is grief that needs to be shared. Expressions of sympathy and the offering of yourself to help others following the funeral are welcomed. It is important that we share our grief with one another. Your local funeral director can help family and friends locate available resources and grief recovery programs in your area. For more information, please call THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME at 585-392-7100. Located at 735 East Avenue, we are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Family owned and trusted since 1976.

Suggestion -Post some signs: Yield to school buses K. Catone’s letter in the Suburban News March 8 publication highlighted a problem for school buses accessing the Route 259 bridge in Spencerport. Would not post signs at both entrances to the bridge requiring other vehicles to yield the right-of-way any time a bus is either waiting or already on the bridge prove a solution to the problem? Obviously, other drivers do not recognize the difficulty for drivers on the buses. Information requiring yielding seems a simple but effective answer to

the bottleneck which undoubtedly affects not only the school bus drivers, but drivers behind the buses as well. At the same time, it is difficult to comprehend a bridge with a 12 ton limit on a State highway. Other drivers of larger vehicles must also be affected by the limit and the difficult approach to the bridge, especially coming from the north. Carolyn Y. Rickman Parma

Library leaders grateful for funding effort - Members of RALS with representatives from Churchville-Chili CSD. (l-r) C-C Director of Instruction Giulio Bosco, CES Principal Dave Johnson, MCLS Director Patty Uttaro, Monroe 2 BOCES SLS Director Jim Belair, Assemblyman Stephen Hawley, GV BOCES SLS Director Christopher Harris, RRLC’s Laura Osterhout, Brockport’s Seymour Library Director Carl Gouveia, Riga Public Library Director Lynn Brown, C-C Director Sue Witter, CES Librarian Julie DeWaters, C-C Superintendent Lori Orologio. Provided photo.

Library leaders grateful for Hawley’s support Leaders from the Rochester Area Library Systems (RALS) group, a collaboration among local public, school and academic library systems, met at Churchville-Chili Elementary School in February to discuss the important role libraries play in the community. It was also an opportunity for the group to thank New York State Assemblyman Stephen Hawley. Funding for libraries has been drastically reduced over the past few years, pushed back to levels not seen since the 1990s. Hawley has championed the library as an equalizer between the haves and have-nots - a resource for eBooks, online access and subscriptions, databases, and even conferences and free professional development. As a result of the work of library leaders from across the state, along with the RALS group who met with supportive state leaders including Hawley and NYS

Assemblyman Harry Bronson, the assembly, for the first time ever, voted to approve an increase in library system aid in 2014. “Libraries are education,” said Jim Belair, library systems director for Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES. “Restored funding means more and better resources for our students and our patrons; for everyone in our neighborhoods and communities. The need is greater than ever to provide access to ever-changing technology tools and upto-date information.” The RALS group members are: The Monroe County Library Systems (MCLS), the Rochester City School District, Canandaigua’s Pioneer Library System, the Rochester Regional Library Council (RRLC), and the Monroe 1 and 2 BOCES, Genesee Valley BOCES, and Finger Lakes BOCES library systems.

Monroe and Ontario County Farm Bureau members meet with Senator Rich Funke in Albany. Shown, from left (front row seated) Marie Krenzer of Monroe County Farm Bureau - MCFB, Senator Rich Funke, and back row standing: Kim Zuber of MCFB, Robert Colby of MCFB, (second and third from right). Others shown are Ontario County Farm Bureau members whose names were not provided.

Monroe County farmers visit Albany Farmers from Monroe County Farm Bureau visited with their lawmakers in Albany on March 2 and 3 to make the point that investing in agriculture is an investment in New York. The members hosted a booth at the Taste of New York reception for state lawmakers and staff. They also participated in the annual lobby day where farmers met with both their local and adopted Senators and Assembly members. One of the highlights was Comptroller Tom DiNapoli’s address at the welcome breakfast. The Comptroller released his new report highlighting the economic importance of New York agriculture. It contributed $37.6 billion to the state economy in 2012 which was a 22% increase from 2007. Farms provide jobs and support the tax base, supply local food to consumers and preserve open space free from development. At the Capitol, Monroe County Farm Bureau advocated for a number of priorities this year that would create a positive economic climate for farms throughout the state. These priorities include ways farming can help drive the economy, programs that support the availability of local food and ways to expand market opportunities.

Among the specific priorities is support for a refundable investment tax credit. This would encourage greater investment into equipment and also be helpful for younger farmers who may be in greater need of capital to handle the startup costs of owning a farm. Purchasing construction supplies, machinery, or new technology has a multiplier effect supporting additional local businesses and jobs. Members also asked for more funding to repair the area’s aging roads and bridges. Having a safe, reliable infrastructure is critical for a farm to run an efficient operation and transport fresh product to market. Farm Bureau has also proposed a Farm E-Z Pass to reduce the cost of transporting food along the Thruway and across the bridges into New York City. There was also widespread support for a new funding stream that would assist local school districts in starting up new FFA chapters to support future farmers. There is a growing interest for agriculture education in schools, but financial constraints often limit the availability. New York Farm Bureau is looking to partner with the state, school districts and the farm community to grow local FFA programs. Provided information

Creativity opens minds

Explore your potential at GCC’s annual Creativity Conference by Maggie Fitzgibbon Have you ever been asked to think of innovative ideas or use creativity in your workplace and wonder what that really means? This concept is more than just a clichĂŠ; it means to try to think of different solutions or new ways of accomplishing tasks. Officials at Genesee Community College are offering an upcoming event that will feature a variety of workshops designed to help people apply innovation in their workplace and in their personal life. Genesee Community College (GCC) in Batavia, will offer a Creativity Conference on Wednesday, April 15 from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is the second year GCC has offered this conference and, according to college officials, the goal for this conference is to inspire inventiveness and ingenuity. Lina LaMattina, Ed.D, is the GCC Director of Business Programs, and is the catalyst for this conference. “As we age, we begin to assimilate into the structure of conformity and often times, we continue on this path. By thinking creatively, we can tap into inherent opportunities and new ways of doing almost anything,â€? LaMattina explained. Last year’s conference drew almost 75 people from a variety of businesses and the community. The hope is to attract attendees from across the region to come together to learn how to ‘think outside the box.’

“This conference is open to anyone who wishes to think innovatively and problem solve resourcefully, LaMattina said. “Our goal is to broaden the application of and to deepen the knowledge of creativeness and how it can be applied in many areas such as education, business, community and personal enrichment. Planning for this daylong event is ongoing. LaMattina and the conference committee are seeking presenters. “We are looking for people who have novel approaches to problem solving or can share their creative talents and tools. Our committee will review which presenters best align with our four focus areas, LaMattina said. Proposals must be submitted by March 23 and can be submitted online at the GCC website at http://www.genesee.edu/home/events/creativity-conference/submit-yourproposal. The conference kicks off with keynote speaker Peter Cumbo, a motivational speaker from the Buffalo, area. According to his Linkin profile, “Cumbo specializes in the effective communication of ideas and is an organizational consultant offering strategic advice, training and practical leadership to business. The one-day conference will consist of a variety of 50minute workshops and will be held on the GCC Campus in the Conable Technology Building. The cost is $99 per person, which covers all of the conference fees, materials and includes a continental breakfast as well as lunch.

This event will also include an exhibit area open to attendees where student entrepreneurs will showcase their creations, inventions and businesses. For information, visit the GCC website by following the link at http://www.genesee.edu/home/events/creativity-conference. Phone calls may be directed to Donna Rae Sutherland at 343-0055 ext. 6616 or email at dsutherland@genesee.edu. “We all need healthy positive creative outlets for personal enrichment. We hope this conference can provide a stimulus for people to open their minds to become deliberately creative and use what they have learned to transform their world, LaMattina said.

Bumgarner chosen Hickok Belt® Award Winner for 2014 A panel of National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (NSSA) voters has chosen San Francisco Giants Pitcher Madison Bumgarner as the overall Hickok Belt® Award winner for 2014. Bumgarner was selected based on his incredible performance throughout the year - but especially for his record-setting performance at the 2014 World Series. That amazing performance led to Bumgarner becoming the first monthly Hickok Belt® Award winner to be selected unanimously, in October. In one of the greatest World Series pitching performances of all time, Bumgarner defeated the Kansas City Royals in Game 1, pitched a shutout win in Game 5, and finally came on in relief to clinch the victory in Game 7 with 5 shutout innings - allowing only two hits while striking out four with no walks. Bumgarner also finished the regular season with an 18-10 record and a 2.98 ERA. “On behalf of the NSSA, I’d like to congratulate Madison Bumgarner on an amazing year,” said Dave Goren, Executive Director. “He had a terrific regular season, but

Community leaders advocate “Students First” concept The Brockport Central School District distributed a Community Advocacy Letter signed by the Superintendent, the Brockport Village Mayor, the Presidents of the Board of Education, Brockport Teacher’s Association, the Brockport Administrators Association, the SEIU and the PTSA. The letter, distributed March 17, expresses the collective concerns of staff, administrators, union and community leaders regarding NYS Governor Andrew Cuomo’s reform agenda and the potential impact on Brockport students. In praise of the cooperation demonstrated by the participants, Dr. Lesli C. Myers, Superintendent of the Brockport Schools, said, “We recognize that while our approaches to advocacy may differ, we are all, first and foremost, deeply committed to ensuring that Brockport Central School District’s students remain our first priority. This is an important first step in setting aside our differences and individual agendas to focus on our children.” The letter was distributed via email to families and staff and is available online at www.bcs1.org/advocacy. The webpage also provides sample letters and links to communicate with state legislators. Provided information

Students explore aspects of power grid management Representatives from National Grid and Lewis Tree Service visited Robert Swaisgood’s Environmental Science class at Churchville-Chili High School on February 27 to hear a variety of innovative solutions to classic power line maintenance problems. Student research groups have been studying ways to tackle the problems effectively, while still considering the wildlife and the health of the surrounding environment. Power interruptions can be caused when lines are brought down by falling or ice-covered tree branches, or by trees or other vegetation growing too close to lines. The students, who are from grades 10-12, proposed plans for short-term vegetation control and for more long-term solutions to the experts, who responded with feedback based on real-world experience. Jack Feltz, the senior forestry supervisor from the Genesee region for National Grid, emphasized that the utility is extremely cognizant of the environment. They work in partnership with the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to protect wildlife habitat and endangered species. “Although there are times when the answer must be tree removal, there are many alternatives,” he said. “We use Intelligent Vegetative Management (IVM); we set up regular trim schedules; we work out solutions with property owners. Sometimes just mowing takes care of the problem.” Lewis Tree Service Division Manager Eric Scherer reminded students that professionals can’t wait for the optimal time to prune, or shut down power to work around lines. “We work on energized lines all the time. That’s why our safety protocols have to be followed so closely.” Both experts shared opinions and suggestions on the student presentations and addressed questions on how to prepare for a career in forestry, tree care or vegetation management.
