Like Violence casts a storm for the sake of artistry by Kiri Patella Ryan Like Violence is a Pop-Punk genre based band comprised of five members from Spencerport. All knowing each other since middle school, they include: lead vocalist, Brittni DiFiore; drummer, Beau Bilinski; lead guitarist, and vocalist Don Rivaldo; guitarist, Joey Vetromile, and bassist and backup vocalist, Dan Belkin. Deriving from the musical influences of similar genre groups such as Blink-182, The Wonder Years, Brand New, Metallica, Counter Parts and The Story So Far, Like Violence describes themselves as falling into their own musical category, separate from Pop-Punk, that they refer to as, “melodic paracore.” The band began in the fall of 2013 when Brittni and Don first started playing together. The initial phase was never all that serious; Brittni made arbitrary appearances to Don’s house where the two of them would spend time covering songs acoustically. “I feel like I was playing with Brit for about a year and decided, ‘let’s get serious about this,’ ” Don explained. When Beau saw Brittni and Don “jamming out” together he decided, “I want in on that.” From there, the two other members soon joined. In pursuit to complete the group, the band used social media to bring in a bassist and an additional guitarist. Lucky for them, the newest members already happened to be long-time friends also from the Spencerport area. “I saw

something on Facebook and jumped on it real quick,” guitarist Joey mentioned. Shortly thereafter, Dan tagged along on the bass and finalized the band’s formation. Once all of the members had come together, they started working on their first two studio singles, “Voices” and “Cameron,” which were released in the spring of 2015. After that, the band released its first EP, “Raised by Wolves.” Since then, Like Violence has appeared in seven stage performances including: three shows at Water Street Music Hall in Rochester; two shows at The Bug Jar in Like Violence performing at RageFest 2015 at Water Street Music Rochester; one house show and Hall in Rochester. Several of the Like Violence will continue to write and produce band members had been involved in previous more music, perform shows and eventually musical projects all throughout high school and conduct small tours on the weekends. The band years after. High school bands included, Suit ‘Em Up, Aunt Ancy and the Bird House and SEGA. Later down the road Beau and Don went on to play in the band Setbacks with other Spencerport natives. “It (Like Violence) is essentially a super group of all of our bands,” Joey explained. Yet before any one of them decided to pick up and learn an instrument, music served as an essential part of their individual lives since the very beginning. Like Violence continues their pursuit to grow as a band in hopes that they could one day obtain strong recognition within the music industry. “I just want to make music that people like,” expressed Beau, “Something that people listen to … when they listen, they think, ‘these guys get me.’ ” “I want to make different music too, instead of all the same old stuff,” Don added. If given the opportunity, the band would love to focus all of their time and energy in music writing it, playing it and performing it, wherever it takes them. “I want to do this band for some sort of period of time and not have to work any other job,” said Don. As for now, each member continues to work separate jobs in order to support their musical endeavors. Veterans speak to eighth-graders for Take A Vet to School Day Brockport Central School District partnered with Sen. Joe Robach, Time Warner Cable and the History Channel to participate in “Take a Vet to School Day,” a national initiative that connects veterans with young people. Veterans from different branches of the military shared their experiences in the armed forces with eighthgraders at Brockport Oliver Middle School on November 13. Dick Griswold represented the Navy; Sharon Chaplain the Air Force and Brockport High School graduate and board trustee Gerry Maar represented the Army. The veterans spoke about their time in the service and shared stories that impacted their lives.

“It is because of our veterans that Americans have the privilege to choose their career, pursue an education and enjoy the many basic freedoms that so many take for granted every day,” said Sen. Joe Robach. “There is no more important way to learn about our history than by hearing the firsthand accounts of the brave individuals who serve. Students at Brockport Oliver Middle School had that opportunity. I applaud the veterans who participated in this event and I am confident that their stories will have a lasting impact on these students in a very positive way.” Provided information

Hilton CSD residents to vote on Capital Project proposition A Capital Maintenance and Safety Project will be presented to Hilton School District residents in a public vote on Tuesday, December 8. The proposition authorizes the district to make capital improvements in the amount of $2,650,000. This project will have no impact on local property taxes. Revenue will come from available NYS Building Aid, the District Capital Reserve Fund and NYS EXCEL Aid. The issue that precipitated the vote is the septic system at Northwood Elementary School, which is past its life expectancy. The district had intended to replace the system with a connection to the Town of Greece sewer system as part of the recently completed 2012 capital project; however district officials learned earlier this year that the town would not go forward with the sewer line extension. As a result, the 2015 Capital Maintenance and Safety Project includes a cost efficient

package sewer treatment plant, which is a pre-engineered and pre-fabricated method of treating wastewater with an aerobic process. The proposed project also includes the reconstruction of pavement at the Merton Williams Aquatic Center and Village Elementary School bus loop and back parking lot, which deteriorated during last year’s harsh winter. At Hilton High School’s LeBeau Field, site modifications to the entry and walkways from the parking lot to the stands are proposed in order to separate pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Residents can find more detailed information on the District website and in the “Insight” newsletter mailed to homes in midNovember. Students at Byron-Bergen Elementary School have focused their efforts on an impressive goal to benefit their school for well over a year. They have been busy planning, organizing, budgeting, working with partners and raising needed funds. They finally saw all their hard work pay off at an outdoor ceremony at the school’s playground on November 4 when Principal Brian Meister cut the ribbon and opened the new four square playing court. The project began with the school’s Student Council. Student leaders from grades 4-6 recognized that a need existed for a safer location for students to play the popular playground game, four square. For years, students had played on a concrete sidewalk next to the parking lot. Errant balls often came much too close to cars and traffic. Student leaders created a proposal to build a new play area with a permanent four square court, partnering up with the community’s STEP Boosters, and finding support from the Board of Education and administration leaders. They planned and organized a number of successful fundraising events and activities.

Students researched court building guidelines and rules, designed the court, managed the budget, hired contractors and directed the work. “This project came straight from student ideas and has been entirely executed by our students,” said Meister. “It is reality today because our students made it happen.” The opening ceremony featured a short speech from Student Council President Elli Schelemanow, who thanked the Board of Education, the Byron-Bergen Administration, the Bergen Highway Department, The Pike Company, the Byron-Bergen Maintenance Department, Visual Impact Signs and Graphics and the Elementary School art teacher. Student Council Vice President Frank Hersom, Treasurer Lexi Vurraro, and Secretary Kendall Phillips were also on hand to assist in the ribbon cutting, along with BOE President Debra List and Amy Phillips, and STEP Boosters Treasurer Carrie Baubie. The student court design includes four courts for four square play, with additional areas for shuffleboard and hopscotch. Provided information

This holiday give something that means something - give blood or host a blood drive The American Red Cross encourages individuals and organizations to give something that means something this winter by making a lifesaving blood donation or hosting a blood drive. Blood donations often decline from now to New Year’s Day when holiday festivities pull people away from their donation appointments. Seasonal illnesses, such as colds and the flu, can also have a serious impact on blood donations In addition, there are fewer blood drives during the winter months when many hosting organizations postpone drives while people are traveling for the holidays. Severe winter weather may also cause the cancellation of blood drives. Despite the busy holiday season and threat of extreme freezing weather, the need for blood remains steady. Organizations can help by hosting a blood drive during the winter months, and eligible donors are encouraged to make an appointment to give blood. Donors with all blood types are needed, especially those with types O negative, B negative, A negative and AB blood. Visit redcrossblood.org to learn more about hosting a blood drive. Big year for Candy Buy Back by Kristina Gabalski It’s been a busy couple of weeks at Dr. Steven Thompson’s dental practice in the Village of Holley. People have been stopping in to drop off candy left over from Halloween - all of which will be sent to Operation Gratitude as part of care packages to servicemen and women overseas. Each package is addressed personally to a soldier, Dr. Thompson says. The “Treasure Chest” in Dr. Thompson’s waiting room is full of treats and now he and his staff will work to separate chocolate from other candy in preparation for shipping. “A lot of people called,” Dr. Thompson says. “Local businesses have given cash to help with shipping ... people sent in checks ... many people we don’t even know have been stopping in to donate.” Northwood Elementary School in Hilton donated more than 25 pounds of candy. Some students wrote notes to soldiers. People have also brought Beanie Babies and other stuffed animals, Dr. Thompson’s

This year, the Buy Back was extended to the entire week after Halloween to give people additional time to bring in donations. Brockport NHS students invited to exclusive event at Wilmot Cancer Institute Two National Honor Society students were invited to attend the American Cancer Society Research Reception at the Wilmot Cancer Institute in Rochester on November 5. Brockport seniors Danielle Falkenstein and Laritza Fernandez Claro helped raise nearly $2,000 for the American Cancer Society through a fashion show fundraiser last year. The exclusive reception included breakfast, presentations and a tour of the research facilities to give the students an opportunity to see firsthand how donated money is used. The American Cancer Society has awarded nearly $10 million in grants to cancer researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center over the past ten years. Danielle and Laritza collaboratively coordinated the fashion show this past March to benefit the American Cancer Society. Local businesses provided clothes for models to wear the day of the show as well as items that were auctioned off. Both girls are

Brockport Rotarians hold their 29th senior breakfast

Byron-Bergen Elementary School community is united in its efforts to build character and stop bullying. Provided photo

Happy Rotarians and pleased Seniors met at Brockport McDonald’s Restaurant to enjoy the Annual Ken and Lois Gurnett Senior Breakfast. This year over 70 breakfasts were served with door prizes given every half hour. The event in late years has honored Ken Gurnett, an early club president and long time Rotary member. Gurnett’s wife, Lois,

passed on a couple of years ago, but their daughter Laurie continues their presence by co-hosting with Rotarian Gene Wood. Many say they look forward to the event and seeing their friends each year. Rotary estimates that over nearly three decades, at least 2,500 seniors have attended the event. Provided information

There is no room for bullies at Byron-Bergen Elementary School For the third year, the Byron-Bergen Elementary School community of students and teachers united to celebrate their culture of diversity and anti-bullying. The afternoon of October 27 began with a school tradition: the photograph of over 500 students, taken from the vantage point of the school’s rooftop. Their matching anti-bullying t-shirts featured the District’s strategic goal for the year, “Creating leaders one student at a time.” After capturing the photo, the school gathered for its annual Anti-Bullying Assembly. Principal Brian Meister started things off with an acknowledgement of the District’s recent designation by Character. org as a New York District of Character, thanking the students for making their school a shining example. Much of the afternoon’s entertainment was based on Carol McCloud’s awardwinning book “Have You Filled a Bucket Today?” “Bucket fillers” say and do nice things and help fill people’s emotional buckets with positive feelings, while “bucket dippers” treat others hurtfully and leave them feeling sad and empty. Teachers and students presented a gameshow-type skit, complete with prizes, where student

contestants had to guess whether teachers were demonstrating bucket-filling or bucket-dipping behavior. The school recognized participants in the 2015 Empire State Games with a special video commemoration of the event and an awards presentation. The proud winners included students: Camryn Brookhart, Robbie Gaylord, John Klafehn, Draven Liles, Chelsea Vanelli, and Emily Yun. The school’s Students of the Month and the Sixth-Grade Safety Patrol also received special honors. The assembly included music, provided by the sixth-grade choir, a great dance number illustrating beauty in diversity, and a promise from the newest Pre-K members of the Byron-Bergen school community, to support others and report bullying behavior. Older students led the assembly in reciting the Seven Habits from the school’s Leader in Me Program, which along with the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program forms the foundation for ByronBergen’s character-building success. For more information on the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program visit http:// www.violencepreventionworks.org. For information on The Leader in Me visit www. theleaderinme.org. Provided information

New College at Brockport president, Dr. Heidi Macpherson, updated the group on college goals and initiatives such as building closer ties with the community. Introduced by Rotarian and Director of Drake Library Dr. Mary Jo Orzech, the president discussed more about her background and interest in Brockport. She also introduced her husband, Dr. Allan Macpherson, whom she met while living in England. She spent over two decades as a scholar, professor and administrator before deciding to come back home three years ago. Heidi took the job in

Brockport because it held lots of interest and the area was a pleasant place to work and live. Herself a Rotarian, the president also met some members of the College’s Rotaract Club, including new member Joshua Mathews, president Juan Delgato, and winner of a College scholarship sponsored by Brockport Rotary, Tambria Schroeder. Vice president Eileen Whitney presented Dr. Allen Macpherson with a club banner. Provided information

Blue Devils football season ends with regionals by Warren Kozireski

The game was fairly even statistically except for the Blue Devils only managing a 1-of 13 on third and fourth downs. The loss in the state playoffs was disappointing, but doesn’t tarnish the Blue Devils first football Section V title. “I’ve been a four-year starter and our teams have always been successful,” senior lineman Cam Calderelli, who had four tackles, said. “We had a lot of sophomores on the team who really stepped up this year. I’m happy for my team right now and the way I look at it is that Brockport is going up from here.” “Coming into the year we had lost a lot of key players and I knew we had a good nucleus back, but I didn’t know how they would gel,” Blue Devils head coach Scott Nugent said. “We really didn’t know what our team was going to be capable of, but we did know they were a great group with no individuals, but team players. “(The seniors) have made everybody accustomed to winning here at Brockport, so that’s the expectation now. Their hard work and perseverance will be what leads future teams here.” Senior linebacker Jim Stone led the Blue Devils with 5.5 tackles while Jeremy Michels ended his high school football career with a second half interception. Other seniors included Austin Myers, Shane Hogan, Brandon Lemere, Joe Jarvis, Fox, Chris Sodoma, Matt Johnston, Tyler Johnson, Nick Bertino, Dylan Johnson and Devin Nottingham.

Brockport spotted South Park of Section VI a 20-0 halftime lead and could not rally as the Section V football champions fell 20-7 in the Class A New York State western regionals. South Park scored on their first possession of the game and, later in the first quarter, on an 89-yard punt return by Offensive Player of the Game David Thomas. Thomas later caught a 64-yard bomb with 91 seconds remaining in the first half, but two other opportunities were stopped by the Brockport defense as Cory Gross made a leaping interception ended one drive and Jeremy Michaels knocked down a pass attempt in the end zone on fourth down to thwart another. That kept the Blue Devils within reach, but they were stopped on downs inside the ten yard line on two consecutive drives to open the third quarter and early in the fourth before finally getting on the board. A ten-play, 50 yard drive kept alive by a roughing-thepasser penalty on third down, was capped by a four-yard touchdown run by Gross and Cameron Fox’s extra point to make it 20-7 with 4:18 remaining. The ensuing onside kick was recovered by junior varsity call-up Nick Brauch, but their comeback attempt was stopped on four downs including a key quarterback sack on second down and a penalty for an illegal forward pass on third down.

Explanation as to why gas prices are so varied I’ve read the opinions the last couple of weeks regarding gas prices. The drastic differences in prices is from a practice called zone pricing. The petroleum companies set their prices based on local income, availability to purchase gas elsewhere, you name it, it is in the calculation. I live in Hamlin but buy gas in the Village of Spencerport, between $.20 - $.30/per gallon cheaper. As for the stations that sell gas, they have very little to no influence on the price they sell at, and they aren’t getting rich selling gas either. That’s why places like the one service garage at Route 104 and 19 doesn’t sell gas anymore, they typically make $.03/.04 per gallon, the only way they make any profit was to go strictly self service. Now for a solution. When David Patterson took over as governor, one thing wanted was a law eliminating zone pricing, which he got and signed into law. You ask why hasn’t anything changed? The answer I got when I wrote to Albany was this: it’s a matter of enforcement, the state doesn’t have the money, person power or the ability to enforce the law, so the price differences stayed as they were. At least what I thought was going to happen didn’t, the lower priced sellers would increase their price to match this, getting rid of some pricing. It’s not just fuel, go into a grocery store in Brockport, then go to the same style in Pittsford and you’ll pay more for the same item. Michael Gilfilian Hamlin
