Steel signing ceremony highlights progress on Brockport Pedestrian Bridge
New York State Canal Corporation Director Brian Stratton joined Brockport Mayor Margay Blackman, SUNY Brockport President Heidi Macpherson, and other officials on Wednesday, August 14, in a “steel signing” ceremony to highlight the construction progress of the Brockport Pedestrian Bridge over the Erie Canal.
The Brockport Pedestrian Bridge over the Erie Canal will connect the SUNY Brockport campus to the Empire State Trail and the Village of Brockport. The project was initially announced in 2020 and construction began in 2023. When completed in 2025, the bridge will complement the Village of Brockport’s installation of a kayak dock and plans for a nearby boathouse. The bridge may also serve as a viewing platform for anticipated rowing competitions on the canal.
“We are so thrilled to get to call it our home,” said SUNY Brockport President Heidi Macpherson. “It is such an important part of our university’s identity, and we are eager to embrace opportunities that strengthen both the canal and our relationship to it. Even though the canal has been open for 199 years, we are still yet to unlock its full potential and to maximize the impact it can have on our campus and the Village of Brockport. Today we are taking a significant step towards that reality.”
With its gentle elevation change, the pedestrian bridge will be fully accessible and will integrate sustainable features such as native species planting, stormwater rain gardens, LED light fixtures, and compliance to Dark Sky principles. In addition, the

Byron-Bergen students flex leadership skills to
Twenty-six boxes of school and athletic supplies arrived in Belize on August 7, 2024, destined for the Soccotz R.C. School in San Ignacio. The story of the boxes began five months earlier when the ByronBergen Adventure Club traveled to Belize over Spring Break. Their visit to the Soccotz R.C. School included meetings with students and staff as well as classroom tours and a game of soccer. The visit also revealed that the classrooms were under-resourced and relied on supply donations or, in some cases, the purchase of school supplies by teachers. This realization led a few Byron-Bergen students to brainstorm ways of supporting the Belizean school by helping provide supplies and materials. Tenth-grade students Ava Goff, Megan Jarkewicz, and Libby Starowitz were among these students.
“I wanted to participate in the Belize donation event because seeing so many people in need really opened my eyes,” said Jarkewicz. “That trip helped me to appreciate how many basic materials we can afford here in the United States. Walking through the classrooms at the Succotz R.C. School and seeing how little those kids truly had sparked something in me to want to help.”
Under the guidance of Science Teacher and trip coordinator Peter Spence and parent chaperone Sherry Starowitz, the three students developed a strategy to help their new friends in Belize. They prepared presentations to local businesses and secured support with shipping costs and supply purchases. Donations from Liberty Pumps, Triple-O Heating, Cooling, Electrical & Plumbing, and Turn Key Operations provided
teaching materials, athletic equipment, and shipping costs.
“I was surprised by how happy the students in Belize were even though they didn’t have the facilities or supplies we have,” said Starowitz. “I’m most proud of how the Byron-Bergen community came together to support the school in Belize.”
“Something that excited me the most while doing this project is that not only was I helping the school but also the kids,” said Goff. “While in Belize we ended up playing soccer with a couple of kids and that encouraged me even more to want to help provide for them and their school.”
With transportation and larger supply donations secured, the students turned their attention to small donation collections. In collaboration with district administration, the students placed boxes in the Byron-Bergen Elementary School and Jr./Sr. High School for basic school supplies and devised a
sixth-grade kickball challenge to boost donations. Students, teachers, and community members donated generously.
“I’m very impressed with the girls’ hard work and the support from Mr. Spence and the B-B community,” said Adventure Club parent chaperone Sherry Starowitz.
Goff, Jarkewicz, and Starowitz organized, inventoried, and packed the donations for delivery to Liberty Pumps, who handled shipping.
“Libby, Ava, and Megan led the project from conception to close amidst finals, the end of the school year, and summer vacation,” said Byron-Bergen Jr./Sr. High School Principal Paul Hazard. “Their dedication to the cause is inspiring. Mr. Spence and Mrs. Starowitz were great facilitators and the generous donations from three local businesses left me in awe of the power of our school community.”

Dawkins will headline the Rochester Press-Radio Club’s 75th Anniversary Celebration, at a dinner on Tuesday, October 22, at the DoubleTree by Hilton. West Herr Automotive Group is the event’s presenting sponsor.
Dawkins will receive the West Herr Automotive Group Sports Personality of the Year Award at the dinner. Scott Pitoniak, an award-winning author, columnist, and club member, will conduct a Q&A with Dion.
Dawkins was the 2022 and 2023 Bills Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award nominee. The award recognizes players who excel on the field and demonstrate a passion for creating a lasting positive impact beyond the game.

Hamlin Farm Fest August 24
Hamlin Recreation is holding its second Hamlin Farm Fest on Saturday, August 24, as a celebration of the town’s rich agricultural heritage and the hardworking farmers who help sustain the community. It will be held from noon to 5 p.m. at the Hamlin Firemen’s Field. All are welcome for a day filled with fun, food, and festivities in honor of local farms.
This year’s Farm Fest will feature a tractor parade along Route 19 to kick off the event at the Fireman’s Field. The parade will begin at 11:30 a.m. from Tops.
Support local farmers and artisans and discover the flavors of our area, as there will be a Farmers Market and vendors showcasing fresh produce and other goods.
There will be a variety of interactive activities and entertainment for the whole family. From tractor rides and
petting zoos to pony rides and bounce houses, there’s no shortage of excitement for kids of all ages.
There will be a Mechanical Bull riding competition for participants to compete to see who can stay on the longest, with prizes awarded to the top times. Other contests include Chicken Suit Races, Frog Jumping Contest, Greased Watermelon Contest, Pie Baking and Pie Eating Contests, and a Biggest Sunflower Contest.
Enjoy live music and entertainment throughout the day featuring Another Vice.
While the event is free to attend, there will be some activities that will require the purchase of a cash only wristband.

•Zorn, David R., age 84, died August 16, 2024. David was born November 20, 1939, to Chester and Phyllis Zorn. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers, Delmer, Dale, and Duane, sister Marlene and her husband Larry Judd and son Gregory G. Zorn. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Bonnie; sons David Zorn Jr. and Tim Zorn; daughter Robin (Scott) Waller; grandchildren David Bielewicz (Jackie Baker), Michael Waller, and Scottie Waller; great grandchildren Nico and Juna; sister-in-law Betty Zorn; many nieces, nephews and cousins. A true man of his time; he was always sharply cut, mild-mannered, kind, and a devoted steward to his family and modest plot in life. From his early upbringings on a milk farm to retiring from a successful career at Eastman Kodak, he had a perfect understanding of the value of dedication. No one can deny this as his secret to happiness in life. He bowled better than most, loved a good round of golf, and was a great Euchre player.

John was a 1958 Aquinas graduate and earned an Associate’s degree from RIT. He was employed by Macke Business Products for 40 years, and became the Vice President of Sales. He was active in community events, and a member of St. Leo Catholic Church in Hilton.

Born in Hilton, N.Y. on May 15, 1933, Eleanor was the first of seven children to parents Alburton and Pearl Priestley. As the “Big Sis” to her brothers and sister, she cherished the love and laughter they created together.
Eleanor graduated from Elba Central School and went on to earn an associate’s degree in business administration from Monroe Community College. She started her career at General Motors and Shuron Optical, where she worked as an Executive Secretary. Eleanor married Peter Morgenberger in 1960, and they resided in Spencerport, N.Y., where they together owned and operated Morgenberger Machine Rebuilders. They welcomed two daughters, Jeneanne Elizabeth and Alicia Eva.
One of Eleanor’s greatest joys was pursuing her creative side through a love of and talent in interior design. Her specialty was advising customers on window treatments and upholstery. Following Peter’s death, Eleanor dedicated herself to providing care and companionship to the elderly for more than two decades. In her later years, she lived in Webster, N.Y.
Eleanor is predeceased by her loving husband, Peter C. Morgenberger and her beloved daughter Jeneanne E. Morgenberger; parents Alburton and Pearl Priestley; brothers Alburton “Skip”, Maynard, and Wayne, and sister-in-law Celia Syer. She is survived by her daughter Alicia (Rick) Schober; her grandchildren Amanda Falzone, Ricky and Nathan Schober; sister Dolores Yeaton, brothers Edward and Terry Priestley; several special nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Orleans County Soil & Water receives grant for tree removal in Holley
The Orleans County Soil and Water District (SWCD) has been awarded a $350,046 grant from New York State that will be used to remove dead and dying ash trees in Holley Canal Falls Park. The grant award came through the Urban and Community Forest grant program funded by the United States Forest Service and was announced by Governor Hochul earlier this month.
According to Katie Sommerfeldt, District Manager for Orleans County SWCD, this grant allowed for local governments like Soil and Water Conservation Districts to apply on behalf of municipalities and communities who face environmental challenges due to climate change as well as economic disparities. SWCD secured the grant for the Village of Holley to do the tree removal work in Holley Canal Falls Park.
“As many residents in the Village of Holley and throughout Orleans County visit the park for hiking, fishing, and picnicking, keeping the park safe for visitors as well as protecting this environmental resource remained a high priority for our organization,” said Sommerfeldt. “Orleans County SWCD is very appreciative that Holley Canal Falls Park was selected for these funds and we are excited to support important projects like this that will benefit the communities we serve.” Provided information
Monroe County non-profits can now apply for ARPA grant funding
Non-profit organizations in Qualified Census Tracts can now apply for direct operating aid grants due to the lingering impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The $6 million American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grant fund is part of a $25 million ARPA package passed by the Monroe County Legislature on August 13, 2024.
“As our community continues to recover from the pandemic, many of our non-profits need support in meeting the increasing demand for essential services. Direct operating aid for these organizations is vital and will provide increased financial stability as they continue serving the needs of our residents,” said County Executive Adam Bello.

NYS invests $646 million to recruit and train health care workers
Finger Lakes Performing Provider System chosen to manage Career Pathways Training Program in 18-county region
Governor Kathy Hochul recently announced three Workforce Investment Organizations (WIO) will receive awards totaling up to $646 million over the next three years to implement the Career Pathways Training (CPT) Program, which will recruit and train thousands of new health, mental health, and social care workers across New York. This program, part of the New York Health Equity Reform (NYHER) 1115 Waiver, will also provide new career advancement opportunities to many current health care workers throughout the State. The WIO awardees are 1199SEIU Training and Employment Funds, Iroquois Healthcare Association, and the Finger Lakes Performing Provider System (FLPPS).
“We are grateful to be recognized by the State as a trusted partner to deliver on this important work. FLPPS has focused on building the healthcare workforce over the last decade as part of our Medicaid redesign and system transformation efforts, working closely with our partners and stakeholders,” said Carol Tegas, CEO, FLPPS. “The CPT Program will extend and scale our programming across the Finger Lakes, Western NY, and Southern Tier regions, and provide vital educational and training opportunities that are desperately needed throughout New York State. By fostering partnerships, enhancing skills and career laddering, and creating a new pipeline of students, we are building a more resilient and diverse healthcare workforce.”
The CPT Program will support workforce recruitment and retention to promote the increased availability of health care practitioners in two career pipelines – Healthcare Career Advancement for those who are currently in a healthcare profession and looking to move up, and New Careers in Healthcare for those who are seeking a career in healthcare.
The program will target workforce shortages in healthcare staffing, support the delivery of health-related social needs, and increase access to culturally appropriate services.
“The 1115 NYHER waiver is a tremendous opportunity for our community to close the workforce gaps that exist throughout our healthcare system,” said Dave Seeley, Executive Director, RochesterWorks; Chair of the Regional Consortium of Health Care Workforce. “I can’t think of a more qualified organization than FLPPS to lead our region’s Career Pathways Training program, which will not only bring hundreds of new workers into the healthcare field, but also provide the necessary supports and pipelines for those workers to advance their careers. It is a win-win for our community: ensuring we have the necessary labor force to provide equity in our healthcare system, while also creating upward mobility for job seekers.”
Program participants will make a three-year commitment of service, in their new professional title, to Medicaid providers that serve at least 30 percent of Medicaid members and/or uninsured individuals. Eligible training and education programs will include Licensed Practical Nurse, Associate Registered Nurse, Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Master of Social Work, Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor, Certified Pharmacy Technician, Certified Medical Assistant, Respiratory Therapist, Community Health Worker, and Patient Care Manager.
“FLPPS has provided a tremendous amount of support to Community Action of Orleans and Genesee,” said Renee Hungerford, Executive Director/CEO of Community Action
of Orleans & Genesee. “I have partnered with FLPPS under two different roles at two different organizations and have always felt confident of their unwavering support.” She added, “Building a strong workforce that transcends all facets of the healthcare continuum is essential to fixing our broken healthcare system.”
Each WIO will be responsible for participant recruitment, coordination of training, supportive services, and educational case management support of the individuals to assure successful completion of their programs and job placement. Support services to program participants includes case management, pre-training and academic program readiness, academic and training support, enhanced academic support for struggling participants, job readiness and placement, language services, and additional non-academic support.
WIOs were chosen based on criteria, including their deep connections to their respective regions, demonstrated success in operationalizing workforce training program, and capacity to rapidly and effectively stand up the CPT Program in their region.
“FLPPS, as a community partner, has long been a trailblazer in addressing the needs of our region’s health care workforce. Right now, health care in our region is challenged by the need to expand, retain and support our health care workforce,” said Wade Norwood, CEO of Common Ground Health. “This state investment will ensure that our health care workers are prepared to meet the challenges of today and the future. Grants available for farmers to learn and share sustainable agriculture
Farmers in the Northeast region of the United States can apply for up to $30,000 in funding for sustainable agriculture projects starting in 2025. These projects can range from experiments to on-farm events and demonstrations or other educational activities.
The Call for 2025 Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) Farmer Grants is now available. Approximately $850,000 has been allocated to fund projects. Awards of up to $30,000 are
available and proposals are due no later than 5 p.m. EST on November 12, 2024.
Northeast SARE funds projects in a wide variety of topics, including marketing and business, crop production, raising livestock, aquaculture, social sustainability, climate-smart agriculture practices, urban and Indigenous agriculture and more.

Tax rates of area villages ranked
According to 2023 data from the New York State Comptroller’s Office, the village of Medina had the highest full value tax rate of the villages in Monroe, Orleans, and Genesee Counties, and was ranked tenth-highest of 526 villages in the state.
The villages are ranked by full value tax rate, which reflects the total levy in each village per $1,000 of the full taxable value of all property in the village. The metric helps measure the overall property tax burden in each community. The comptroller’s office says that because the number is
based on full property valuations, not assessed values, it is generally comparable across villages. That also means the rates are different than what may appear on your tax bill.
Keep in mind that villages with high tax rates aren’t necessarily spending extravagantly. It takes a higher rate in lower property value communities to raise the same amount of money a smaller rate would raise in a location with higher property values.
