‘No quick fix,’ he says, but walking routine brings about change Spencerport man uses low impact walking to reduce weight by Kristina Gabalski Six years ago Abraham Hernandez weighed 400 pounds. The now 62-year old had tried everything to lose the weight he had gained over years of traveling for his work. Abraham was considering surgery, but found in his research that the statistics were not good. “I weighed 161 pounds when I got married,” the Spencerport resident recalls. “Gaining the weight happened over a long period of time. It was a long journey to get to that weight and I knew it would be a journey to get back. There’s no quick fix.” After consulting with his doctor, Abraham decided to make a simple but profound lifestyle change: He would get out and walk 4-5 days a week and would limit himself to one plate of food at meals. No diets, no weight loss pills, just a commitment to start slow and work towards a healthier lifestyle. The program has been remarkably successful Abraham has lost nearly 200 pounds and looks and feels great. He says his ultimate goal is to get down to 180 pounds - he has about 40 pounds to go. When he began his lifestyle change, he was working at a bank on Winton Road in Rochester and would walk up and down the street on his lunch hour. Motorists noticed Abraham’s daily walks and that he was losing weight. “People were cheering me on,” he says. “When I started, I could barely walk. You have to start slowly, it gets better in about three weeks.” In 2-3 months, Abraham says he was up to walking one-half mile at a time. Today, he walks at least four days a week - 1.5 to 3 miles a day - and in addition to regular walking - runs in 5K races. Abraham credits one of his nine grandchildren with finally helping to make the decision to change his life. He and a grandson were in the backyard when his grandson said, “I wish you weren’t so big, so I could play ball with you ... I decided that if I didn’t lose weight, I might not be around for my grandchildren,” he remembers. Abraham is now sharing his experience and encouraging others through his business called “Healthy Journey Now,” speaking to children and adults at community centers, churches and one-on-one. Physicians now refer overweight patients to him for help and guidance. “I feel very strongly about the plight of America and how its citizens are becoming more obese,” Abraham says. By the year 2030, he says, it is predicted that 83 percent of the US population will be overweight and half the population will be obese. It’s a serious problem, he explains, which leads to increased medical costs and impacts businesses and employers. Workers who are overweight tend to have more health related problems and end up taking more days off. Continued on page 2
Hungry Hungry Hippos – the human version - Merton Williams Middle School in Hilton recently celebrated Winter Fest, an event to reward students who were seen by their teachers displaying more than one of the six Habits of Mind and Character Traits of Dignity that students and staff are working on throughout the year. Thirty seventh and eighth graders and 30 of their friends were able to participate in each of three lunch periods. After the students ate lunch, they were divided into teams and played rounds of the human version of “Hungry Hungry Hippos.” Teams who earned the most points received tickets that they could trade in for prizes. Assistant Principal Michael LeGault organized the event and several staff members volunteered their time to make the event a success. Shown here is seventh grader Ian Donahue. Provided photo.
C-C’s Ryan named Player of the Year by Warren Kozireski Churchville-Chili graduate Ashley Ryan was named by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) as the Division III Player of the Year and an AllAmerican at the 2015 Division III Women’s Ice Hockey Championship banquet. The senior forward for Elmira College captured the prestigious Laura Hurd Award after she tallied 59 points this season on 18 goals and 41 assists for the Soaring Eagles. The award honors the memory of former Elmira College standout women’s ice hockey player, Laura Hurd, who died tragically in an automobile accident shortly after graduation. Hurd’s mother Jennifer and brother, Steven, were on hand to present the award to Ryan on what would have been Laura’s 33rd birthday. Ryan was also one of ten student-athletes named to the AHCA CCM All-American squad as a First Team selection. She helped lead Elmira to a first place finish this
season in the ECAC West with a perfect 18-0-0 conference record while outscoring opponents 101-23 over 18 games. They lost to Plattsburgh in the conference playoff semi-finals, received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament and advanced to the final with wins over Trinity and Wisconsin-River Falls before again losing to Plattsburgh in the national championship final. Earlier this season the criminal justice major broke Elmira College’s single-season record and tied the NCAA Division III record for most assists in a singleseason with 42 and joined the 100-point club while tying a single-game school record for most assists in a single-game with six in the 10-2 win over SUNY Cortland on November 15. Walking routine brings about change Continued from page one Half of all Medicaid benefits go to treating diabetes and related health issues, Abraham adds. He observes that weight is a problem that is rarely spoken about. Overweight children are subject to being picked on, and for adults, job opportunities may be limited. “You can’t hide weight, it’s like a scarlet letter, Abraham says. Being overweight can also lead to emotional and mental distress and can even lead some to become suicidal, he says. What worked Abraham says fad, get-thin-quick diets and pills are not the answer. Walking and eating in moderation are a simple permanent change that are accessible to anyone, he explains, and the benefits of walking are remarkable and seemingly limitless. They include improving physical health and well-being as well as mental, emotional and spiritual health. “There’s no membership, no age limit, it’s easy to do, Abraham says. “Walking is a natural thing, God made us to walk. Abraham has done extensive research on the benefits of walking - included on the long list are improved circulation and increase of fluids which lubricate the body; strengthening of bones; improved immune function; help with arthritis; reducing of constipation; reduced risk of hip fracture, heart disease, cancer and even Alzheimer’s. Walking also promotes socialization be-

cause you can walk with friends, family, children and even get to know your neighborhood. After he started walking, Abraham says he began to notice, “Spencerport is beautiful ... it has beautiful homes and beautiful trees. What a way to become part of the community. He encourages members of the Spencerport community to take advantage of the fact that the Spencerport School District opens three elementary schools from 4 - 7 p.m. Mon.-Fri. to allow the public to walk in a secure, warm and safe area. (Advance registration required). “It really saddens me that (in) a town this large, more people are not taking advantage of this great opportunity, Abraham observes. “There is no charge to our citizens and when you realize the incredible benefits to walking, it blows me away that more are not taking advantage of this opportunity. When he speaks with someone who is discouraged that the weight is not coming off faster, Abraham says he tells them that slow weight loss is better, because you are more likely to keep the weight off. He weighs himself everyday with a doctor’s scale - however - “I control the scale, Abraham says, “It doesn’t control me. He is not ruled by how many pounds he may be losing, but likes to gauge progress by purchasing a shirt that is slightly too small and celebrating when he reaches the point where he can fit into it. “My hope and wish is to eventually go into my closet and find only one size, Abraham says. He also is not worried about gaining the weight back because he enjoys his new lifestyle and its many benefits. “I’m healthier than I was 30 years ago, Abraham says. He is off high blood pressure medicine, no longer needs to check blood sugar and sleeps like a baby. And he also says he loves carbs ... and continues to eat pizza and pasta - but in much smaller amounts. “Diets keep you from things you love ... you can still love it and eat it, but be careful and really enjoy it, Abraham advises. “I have really started enjoying food. I don’t eat and run, I don’t eat and watch TV. Abraham says he will continue to “be a catalyst to help others to lose weight. “People need to know it can be done, he says. about business Enrollment underway at St. Paul Lutheran School For almost 60 years, St. Paul Lutheran School has been providing a Christian education to children from preschool through eighth grade. By integrating academic rigor, a small community environment, and Christ-centered curriculum students at St. Paul receive an education that is anything but standard. Registration for all school programs opened on February 1, 2015, with the first important deadline for enrollment approaching on April 1. St. Paul looks to enroll over half of the student body for the coming school year by April 1. Although open enrollment continues through the spring and summer, interested parents are strongly urged to complete the registration process by this date. Doing so ensures that school district transportation is provided, financial aid requests are con-

Easter celebrated with steel drums at Spencerport UM Church On Sunday, April 5, Easter will be celebrated with joy and steel drums at the Spencerport United Methodist Church. The Trinidad and Tobago Steelband, under the leadership of Alfred St. John, will be participating in the 10:30 a.m. worship service. This steel drum band has been performing throughout Western New York and Canada since 1972. Alfred formed the group to share the musical heritage of Trinidad and Tobago, and at present there are five core members. Their instruments are drums, bass guitar, cello pans, double tenor pans, double second pans, and soprano (lead) pan. These musicians have been associated with steel pans an average of 20 or more years each. Steel drums, or pans, are a family of musical instruments made from 55 gallon oil drums (pounded into a concave form) and struck with rubber padded mallets. Originating on the island of Trinidad during the 1940s, the first steel drums were purely percussive. Pans have since developed
into lead melody instruments; highly prized by the music world, and sought after for their rich, mellow tones and versatile harmonies.
All are invited to attend this special musical celebration. Provided information

The Financing Contingency Residential sales agreements usually have clauses referred to as financing contingencies that allow the buyers to declare the contract null and void if they are unable to obtain financing. This may be the most important condition in your contract if you are buying a home, so read the contract carefully before you sign it. Before submitting an offer, discuss the risks associated with the finance contingencies. They may set deadlines for applying for a loan, and require the buyer's full cooperation in obtaining all the information needed to process your loan. If the loan is not approved by the deadline, it may be necessary to request an extension from the sellers or take specific steps to void the contract and get your deposit money back. Be sure to note all of the financing deadlines in the contract, apply for your loan as soon as possible, and be diligent about providing the lender with any documents that are requested. For professional real estate advice, give me a call, Mary Lobene at 352-8529.

Supplements For Greater Health –
Doctors may say “No supplements are needed if one eats a healthy diet, your nutritional needs are taken care of”…. However…. 1. How many people eat a healthy diet? 2. How healthy is the soil the food comes from? 3. How many chemicals have been used to produce the food? 4. How long has the food been in travel, storage and your home? 5. What is the actual nutritional value of our foods?
Pros
Conditions that prevent full utilization of the food may be helped with supplements. • Gastro-intestinal problems • medicines that interfere with digestion • lack of diet that assists with metabolizing of nutrients
NEED ASSISTANCE WITH SPECIFIC PROBLEMS -
Supplements may help using a variety of herbs, spices, and specific concentrations of foods. Here are just a few:
• Low vitamin D • Migraines • Poor bone strength • Blood Pressure • Joint pain and stiffness
Cons - Things to be cautious of – • Possible Side effects • Misdiagnosed problem • Used incorrectly • Unknown Brands may be unreliable OUR ADVICE: Use Supplements from “tried & true” companies that have been around for many years and have a successful history. Good manufacturers do quality control.
We wish the FDA would take action more frequently against brands that misrepresent the products they are selling. • Beware of “cures 35 different conditions!” AVOID unknown companies offering the “fad” product on TV and the internet. Sports supplements and sexual enhancement products are particularly susceptible to unlisted ingredients.
