Sweden Town Board meeting
Leigha Walker, the Holley High School senior who performed heroic actions to safe a man’s life earlier in June, was recognized at the Sweden Town Board meeting on June 25.
Leigha was working at Subway in the town of Sweden when a driver had a medical incident that caused him to crash into the plaza’s support post.
Leigha ran out to check on the driver and saw that he was unconscious and the truck doors were locked.
She found a heavy rod and others helped her to break a car window
and pull the man out. Leigha began administering CPR until emergency medical technicians could take over. There is no doubt she saved the man’s life and his family has been in contact with her to thank her.
Joining the Sweden Town Board in honoring Leigha were Monroe County Legislator Jackie Smith and the Brockport Fire Department. Sweden Supervisor Patricia Hayles noted Leigha not only for her proficiency at CPR but her willingness to take charge in a chaotic situation. Provided information

Each of us faces challenges, and often, we overcome them with the help of compassionate listeners. These individuals, who nourish our souls and provide unwavering support, are crucial to our journeys of resilience.
“We are thrilled to host our 2nd Annual Butterfly Release. This event, benefiting Crossroads of Caring, celebrates many journeys of resilience and honors individuals who have been agents of transformation and hope for
others. It is an opportunity to express gratitude that I hope everyone can enjoy,” said Mary Ann Brody, Executive Director of Crossroads of Caring. Butterflies can be purchased for $15 each on the Crossroads of Caring website (www.crossroadsofcaring. org). All purchases must be made by midnight July 7, 2024. Children invited to go on “The Great Alphabet Hunt” in Spencerport
Is your child ready for a fun summer adventure that also reinforces their alphabet knowledge? “The Great Alphabet Hunt” will take place during the month of July in the village of Spencerport. This initiative is aimed to promote literacy and also support local businesses with increased foot traffic. Students attending Spencerport elementary schools received an event flyer in their virtual backpack. A copy is also available at “The Great Alphabet Hunt-Spencerport” on Facebook.
All of the letters from the alphabet have gone missing and they’re hiding throughout the village of Spencerport. Young detectives are needed to help find each one’s sneaky hiding spot. Search for letters between July 1 and 31. Participants can spread their hunt across as many days or try to get them all in one. Each letter will be in the window of the participating business and viewable from the outside. Be sure to look high and low because these letters are clever. Children can color or trace each of the letters on the flyer as they find them. Once they have finished the entire hunt, they can bring the flyer to Union Street Coffee House between 2 and 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday to receive a prize.

Rochester District Golf Association to hold Hall of Fame induction ceremony
by Dave Eaton
On the evening of Tuesday, July 16, the Rochester District Golf Association will proudly announce the third induction class of its Hall of Fame in what has become an annual highlight of “Championship week” – during the RDGA District Championship John H. Ryan Jr. Memorial. The special commemoration will take place in the main ballroom of Irondequoit Country Club.
This year’s class includes four individuals – and one family – who have made a lasting impact on the local golfing community, due to their dedication, skill, leadership and philanthropy.
Joining the RDGA Hall of Fame on that evening will be Frank Commisso – the long-time Head Professional at Irondequoit; Ann Kerwick – one of the winningest female amateurs in Rochester’s long history; Jim Mrva – the retired
Head Pro of Monroe Golf Club and one of Rochester’s most highly honored club and teaching professionals; Donald Ross – the World Golf Hall of Fame member and preeminent golf course architect of the early 20th century who designed six golf courses in the Rochester area; and the Thaney Family, whose members have shared a long history with the RDGA, going back to the very beginnings of the District.
The criteria for RDGA Hall of Fame induction, as approved by the RDGA Hall of Fame Nominating Committee, includes:
•Contributions made by a candidate contributing to the enhancement of the sport of golf through playing, teaching, coaching, maintaining/managing, educating, writing or advocating for an extended period of time.
•Candidates who exemplify the spirit of the game of golf.
•The Achievements of candidates are sustainable over time.
•Eligibility can also include candidates who have, by virtue of name recognition, brought honor, distinction, and/or have favorable contributions to golf in the Greater Rochester area.
On the evening of July 16, each inductee, or their representative, will receive a special medallion inscribed with their name – and all inductees will be introduced by individuals that are well known to the local golfing community or who have a special connection to the inductee.
The RDGA welcomes inductees, their families, friends – as well as members of the public – to attend this year’s Hall of Fame Induction Celebration at Irondequoit Country Club at no charge, although a donation to the RDGA Foundation, in support of the Foundation’s many junior golf initiatives, is recommended. Although attendance is free, pre-registration for this year’s ceremony will be required and can be done at https://tinyurl.com/2he4ffsd.
