Music and demonstrations will entertain The Hilton High School Marching Band opens the Hilton Apple Fest on Saturday, September 29 at 10 a.m. as they march onto the parking lot by the Main Stage at the Community Center to perform a wide variety of songs. These students work hard all year long to put on an exciting performance for the public. New to the Apple Fest is the Boland School of Irish Dance as they perform on the blacktop on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Boland Dancers are well known throughout Monroe County for their lively performances. They have thrilled audiences at local festivals and venues such as The Eastman House and Rochester City Hall. Mario and the Alrights will perform classic 60’s Rock ’n Roll on the Main Stage from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Gather around early to see the Denim & Lace Team as they perform on the blacktop on Saturday at noon. This is a favorite crowd pleaser as they dance to a variety of music. They have been entertaining audiences all over upstate New York and never miss a step. The Hilton Kyokushin Karate students of different ages and skill levels will entertain the crowd with their demonstration on the blacktop from 2:30 to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Founded by Sensei Jim Grafe, Hilton Kyokushin Karate has been a part of the Hilton community for more than thirty years. Geoff Clough and Cyndi Kingsley will be performing on the Gazebo Stage from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Clough has over 30 years of experience as a pianist, piano teacher, songwriter and performer. Kingsley was vocally trained at Hochstein School of Music. Both perform independently in senior communities, festivals, and private parties throughout western New York State and have joined their talents to bring their lively and memorable show to the Apple Festival. New to the Hilton Apple Festival blacktop is a group of approximately 40 young dancers from Marilyn Schneider School of Dance. They are eager to put on a fantastic show for the audience at 10 a.m. Sunday, September 30. The Grove Street Band will perform a variety of classic rock, R&B and country to have folks dancing and singing right along. Band members, Bruce (bass and vocals) and Doug (guitar and vocals) first got together in 1982 with the band Streetwize. They both moved on after that with Bruce performing with No Tolerance and Revolver, and Doug playing in several other projects including Change For Twenty. After a 30 year separation, they decided to try something a little different, by not just playing standard songs but by playing a variety of music with their own style. After an exhaustive search, they discovered Paul (drums and vocals) who had been playing with Southern Comfort and brought his own unique style and talent to the band. Don’t
miss their performance on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Gazebo Stage. Joe Spencer started teaching line dancing 26 years ago and has won over 20 awards and appeared on national television numerous times. In 2016, he formed a performing line dance group called The 3D Line Dancers (Dancing Dudes and Divas!). The group consists of 25-30 dancers of all ages. They enjoy performing different types of line dance to all types of music at fairs and festivals all over western New York. The 3D Line Dancers will perform on the blacktop at 10:45 a.m. on Sunday. Located in Brockport, Master Lim’s Taekwondo Academy is a new and unique Taekwondo facility. Their demonstration on the blacktop at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday will show how their training focuses on techniques and philosophical foundations that make it a way of life as well as a martial art. The students will show unique kicking, punching, and blocking techniques. This is a real crowd gatherer. Students from Little Red Dance Studio will perform on the blacktop from 12:30 to 1 p.m. on Sunday. One of everyone’s favorites, the Greece Jazz Band has been performing in the greater Rochester area since 1997. Created after community surveys indicated a desire to hear big band jazz, this volunteer big band has developed a varied repertoire of familiar standards, dance tunes, and modern high-energy jazz charts. The band has a growing performance schedule and is also active in community and student outreach. The Greece Jazz Band will return to the Hilton Apple Festival Main Stage on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. La Danse Workshop owner and Artistic Director, Trichia Bertino, has been dancing in the area for over 25 years. At La Danse Workshop, emphasis is placed on the development of coordination, poise, perceptions and discipline, while providing an enjoyable learning environment. A group of 50 to 70 students will perform on the Apple Fest blacktop at 2 p.m. on Sunday to demonstrate Tap, Jazz, Pointe, Hip Hop, Modern and Lyrical. The Apple Fest welcomes back The Flock, a group that was unable to perform last year. An original member of The Flock from 1965, Bob Straubing plays guitar, harmonica and is lead vocals. Lyle (Fud) Comstock, also an original member, plays bass guitar, harmonica, and is vocals. Howard (H) DeRue plays drums and percussion. Both Comstock and DeRue were inducted into New York State Country Hall of Fame in 2004. Terry Featherly plays 6 string and 12 string rhythm guitar and also vocals. The Flock enjoys performing for people who enjoy music and will be on the Gazebo Stage on Sunday from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Buses run continuously from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. There is no parking and no drop off area close to the Apple Fest. Win a prize at Corey’s Apple Pond While primarily an attraction for youngsters attending the fest, some adults have been known to fish apples out of Corey’s Apple Pond to win a prize. The premise is simple. There is a 15-foot diameter pool filled with 1,500 apples each day. The little ones use a net and “scoop” an apple. They get to
enjoy the apple plus each apple has a popsicle stick stuck in it that is coded for a prize. Everyone is a winner. This year Corey’s Apple Pond will be inside a large tent to protect it if the weather doesn’t cooperate. This is a fun area for spectators even if not attending the festival with children.
Take home a souvenir If you haven’t already seen this year’s Hilton Apple Fest sweatshirt or T-shirt, they are a bright red -- just like some apples. The “Take a Bite” logo fits the apparel. The Souvenir Booth also has onesies for babies, jackets, mugs, koozie cups, and many other items. Reusable Wegmans
shopping bags will be available to carry home your treasures. In case of rain, there will be rain ponchos and umbrellas available for purchase. The supply is limited though because organizers hope the sun shines all day both days.

In 1982, the Hilton Apple Fest decided to bake the world’s largest apple pie in an 18-foot wide, 18-inch deep pan for the second Hilton Apple Harvest Fest. It was quite an undertaking, requiring many people to assemble and bake the pie. Unfortunately, another group from England baked a pie just a little larger, winning the title. In 1983, Apple Fest organizers decided to bake the smallest apple pie, baked in a bottle cap, another fun undertaking. In 1984, it was decided that apple crisp would be easier to make and serve. The Board contacted WE-MO-CO in Spencerport and they agreed to make a pan in which to bake the apple crisp. The welded pan measured five feet across and approximately five inches deep. A group of Apple Fest volunteers assembled an “oven cap” using sheet steel and iron bracings to cover the crisp while it is cooking. The Apple Fest also purchased a propane burner to go under the pan to bake the crisp. Concrete blocks were used for the oven sides and sand lined the bottom of the oven. Each apple crisp takes about three hours to bake and serves around a thousand people. Over the years the concrete blocks used for walls and the heavy steel oven top have been replaced. However, the original pan and the original propane burner are still in use today.

Where does the logo come from each year? In January, February and March of each year, the Apple Fest receives pictures, drawings, and sketches of logos that are submitted by hopeful artists. The final logo is selected at the March Apple Fest meeting. The logo is then displayed on items like sweatshirts, T-shirts, hats, and mugs. The 2018 winner of the Logo Contest is Shayna Flugel, an 8th Grader at Merton Williams Middle School in Hilton when she submitted her logo entry. She is now attending Hilton High School. Her entry was selected from over 20 submissions for its simplicity of the message and clean lines. She is an avid volleyball player for the Hilton Modified Girls Volleyball Team and Xtreme Volleyball Club. She was on the Merton Williams Honor Roll and selected for the National Junior Honor Society.

plication forms are available at Hilton Tops, Parma Public Library, Parma Town Hall, Hilton Family Restaurant and Hilton Family Pharmacy. Day of show registration is $15 from 8 a.m. to noon. The Truck classes will be highlighted this year with special awards for Club Participation, Best Overall Car of Show, and Best Truck of Show. Other classes include Antique Cars, Stock Cars, Street Rods, Street Machines, Muscle Cars, Corvettes, Trucks/Stock, Trucks/Modified, Sports Cars, Kit Cars, Mustangs, Camaros, Motorcycles, and Modified Compact Cars/Trucks. It is a full day, with music by “Dan The Music Man.” If entering a vehicle in the show, it is suggested that one approach the area from the west. Visitors are reminded to park at the Hilton High School, 400 East Avenue, and take the shuttle bus to the Apple Fest grounds.
Special events at the Hilton Apple Fest Special Events in the Community Center will include the Village and Town Historians in the Historian’s Office. They have a wonderful display window outside the office and much, much more inside the office. Stop in because they would love to see and talk with you. There is a lot to see in the Community Center gym on the first floor. The Collectors’ Sale features sports cards, memorabilia, novelties, toys, die cast models, action figures, comics, and more.
Come and browse for a while. Also in the Community Center will be free Child I.D. located in the entranceway by Henry Street. This is free and an opportunity to help keep your children safe. In the Senior Lounge (near the north entrance of the Community Center) will be the Tops Flu Shots again this year. This is a convenient way to get your shot.
Enter the apple pie baking contest There is one event at the Hilton Apple Fest that organizers never have a hard time getting volunteers to help with – the Apple Pie Contest. Applications are available online at www.hiltonapplefest.org or may be picked up at various locations such as Parma Town Hall, Parma Public Library, Hilton Community Center and Hilton Tops Markets. Pre-registration is preferred, but walk-ins are welcome. There is a $3 entry fee for each pie. All pies are to be dropped off at the Ingham Room in the Community Center on Saturday, September 29 between 7:30 and 9:15 a.m. Eight judges begin their task at 9:30 a.m. Each pie is judged by appearance first. Then they are judged by taste and texture. There is a Youth Division (through 16 years old) and an Adult Division. Last year’s winners in the Youth Division were Carolyn Adams in first place and Leah Buck in second place. In the Adult Division last year’s
winners were Benjamin Read in first place and Maria Gilluly in second place. This year’s winners will be announced Saturday at 4 p.m. on the Main Stage. Each winner will receive a ribbon and a check. The Apple Pie Contest is a great way for families to work together creating their own unique pie.
Take a chance at the Craft Raffle Each crafter at the Apple Fest donates an item they have made to be raffled off with proceeds to benefit the community. Donated items are given a number and put on display. Just purchase a ticket, or tickets, and tell the people in the booth what items you would like to win. They will put your ticket in the bucket for that prize. Winning tickets are drawn on Sunday

of Apple Fest at 3 p.m. at the Craft Raffle booth. While it is nice to be there to pick up what you have won, it is not necessary. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the Craft Raffle booth will be donated to the Hilton Parma Community Council of Churches to support Christmas Baskets for the less fortunate.
TV Raffle funds scholarships Every year the Hilton Apple Fest has a raffle where the proceeds are used for further education of two Hilton High School seniors going on to college or trade school. Members and friends of the Apple Fest have been selling TV raffle tickets around the village at the Hilton Community Indoor Flea Market, Parma Garage Sale Days, Hilton Firemen’s Carnival, Experience Parma, Classic Wheels on Main Street, and at Tops. Tickets are $5 each and will be available at the Craft Raffle booth. The winning ticket for the 32” LED Samsung TV will be drawn at 4 p.m. on Sunday,
September 30 at the Main Stage. Winner does not need to be present. The scholarship application is made available in January for Hilton High School seniors to complete and send in. It’s easy to complete. The committee is very interested in how the student has volunteered in their neighborhood, church, at Apple Fest or somewhere else. Also, the committee asks how the student thinks the village could be made an even better place to live. The two scholarships are presented at Bravo Night in June. The committee is proud to help Hilton students as they further their education.

The photos will be on display both Saturday and Sunday of Apple Fest weekend in the Ingham Room (first floor of the Community Center at the south end of the building).
Judging was completed by a panel of volunteers from the community and was based on creativity, technical quality, use of the theme and the quality of the print. The winners of the contest will be announced at the Apple Fest Main Stage at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The photos will be on display at the Parma Public Library in November.

I think we’re heading on home now so I can take a nap because I’m stressed out and exhausted. A dog’s perspective “Oh boy, we’re going for a walk. Oh no, they are taking me to the Apple Fest with all those feet around me. Well we’re finally here and it sure smells good. I think I’ll try to snag that little boy’s hot dog. Oh wait, there is another dog eyeing it. He growled back at me. Should I give in or put up a fight? They are eating, when is it my turn? I sure could use a drink of water. I’m hot with this coat on. Great! I see a grassy area where I can take care
