Hilton Apple Fest benefits community in many ways The Hilton Apple Fest is an annual event where Hilton puts its best foot forward. The food vendors at the Apple Fest are all organizations from the local community and each is required to offer different items, so no one is competing. Many of the groups participate every year, making the Apple Fest their primary fundraising event - supporting each nonprofit’s mission throughout the year. The Walker Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary has been participating in the Apple Fest as a food vendor for more than 25 years. They sell 10 flavors of pies for $10 each or $3 by the slice. “The Apple Fest is our only fundraiser,” said Michelle Johnson, president and chairperson of the pie booth. Their sole purpose is to support the Walker Fire Department and in past years, money raised has been used to purchase software, furniture, a podium and to fund the annual Recognition Dinner. Leo’s Bakery provides the pies and the Ladies’ Auxiliary usually sells out of all 1,500 that they have on hand. “Our motto is ‘A few serving many,’” said Johnson. “All 10 of our members, who range 10 to 50 years of service, help out with the sale.” The Walker Fire Department Ladies’ Auxiliary pie booth will be located near the shuttle bus stops this year. In addition to local organizations, farmers markets from around western New York have the opportunity to showcase their products during the Apple Fest. Fresh produce, including apples of course, plus maple products, sauces, fudge, jams, cheesecake mixes, pickles, nuts and cookies are some of the delicious items that can be purchased at the festival. Watt Farms Country Market in Albion has sold their famous fudge at the Apple Fest for at least the past 10 years. “The Hilton Apple Fest gives us a great venue and we have quite a following,” said Karen Watt, who owns the business with her husband, Chris. “Even on a rainy day we do a good business.” To prepare, they begin making the 20 plus varieties of fudge two weeks before the festival. It takes that long to produce the 700 to 1,000 pounds that they sell that weekend. “Our chocolate and vanilla raspberry swirls are our two most popular flavors. They’re made with the magenta-colored raspberries that we grow on our farm,” said Watt.
Watt Farms has been making fudge for about 20 years. In that time, they have made 90,000 pounds using four tons of butter. “The sale of our fudge is the one thing that isn’t affected by the weather,” said Watt. It’s not all about the food, though. The Kids Korner entertains little ones with games, crafts and face painting made possible by local churches and the Girl Scouts of Western NY. Up on the Main Stage and Gazebo Stage, local groups such as dance and karate studios have an opportunity to perform. Community Row gives non-profit organizations a place to share information with the public and the Apple Fest Committee does not charge for the space. In the past, these organizations have included animal rescue groups, and health, sports and environmental groups. These groups benefit from awareness, recruitment and membership opportunities that the Apple Fest provides. In some instances, people may join these organizations as a result of seeing them at the Apple Fest. Beyond the borders of the Apple Fest, Hilton’s local businesses also benefit from the 50,000 plus visitors as they patronize local merchants and restaurants while in the area. “For some, the Hilton Apple Fest is a first introduction to our beautiful little village with a big heart,” said Matt Ulakovic, director of public relations for the Hilton Apple Fest. The Hilton Apple Fest Committee hosts a Craft Raffle Booth, which raises funds that are donated to the Hilton Parma Community Council of Churches to fund their Emergency Food Shelf and Christmas Basket programs. Last year, donated items from Apple Fest crafters and those who patronized the raffle booth helped the festival committee raise more than $1,500. The Quilt Raffle helps establish a scholarship for a college-bound future Hilton High School graduate. “The Hilton Apple Fest itself operates as a nonprofit organization,” said Ulakovic, “and as a significant part of its mission, gives local groups, organizations and artisans an opportunity to perform, fundraise or give demonstrations of their own missions and accomplishments.” prepared by Grace Griffee for Suburban News and Hamlin-Clarkson Herald

Donations of food and paper products invited for Hilton-Parma Emergency Food Shelf Before you leave home for a day of fun at the Hilton Apple Fest, be sure to pick up a non-perishable food item or paper product to donate to the Hilton-Parma Emergency Food Shelf. Donation bins will be located right near the shuttle bus stops, so there’s no need to carry your donations around as you browse the craft booths, enjoy the entertainment and dine on delicious Apple Fest food. According to Tina Zebulske, Emergency Food Shelf director, basic items, such as tuna fish, soups, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, pasta and sauce - items that would be helpful in preparing a meal for a family - are most appreciated. Toilet paper, paper towels and tissues are always needed as well. Items that the Emergency Food Shelf cannot accept include open containers of non-perishable foods, alcoholic beverages, medicines, any home canned or processed foods and outdated items. In addition to this year’s food donations, the Hilton Apple Fest makes a financial donation each year to the Hilton-Parma Community Council of Churches, the Food Shelf’s umbrella agency, that is used for the
holiday baskets and to purchase items throughout the year that aren’t received through community donations. In 2013, the Hilton-Parma Emergency Food Shelf assisted 883 families with food and non-food needs with emergency distribution, Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets, and through Foodlink’s Mobile Pantry. They are on track to help even more families this year with 455 families receiving assistance in the first half of the year alone. The Emergency Food Shelf is staffed by volunteers and most of the food staples are collected through donations and contributions. In addition to its permanent location on the second floor of the Hilton Community Center, the Food Shelf distributes food to families at the Foodlink Mobile Pantry three times a year - May, August and November. Thanksgiving baskets are distributed to Food Shelf clients that request them and the Christmas basket program is for those who apply by December 1. Come to Hilton Apple Fest for the music Beautiful crafts, fun children’s activities and apple treats as far as the eye can see are all great reasons to visit the Hilton Apple Fest, but if it’s music you really enjoy then you won’t be disappointed. This year’s Apple Fest features some of the area’s premier bands. Performing on the Main Stage on Saturday from 12 to 4 p.m. are the Invictas, one of America’s longest playing rock bands with three of the four original members rocking on stage. The band comes from the same era as The Rolling Stones, Beach Boys and ZZ Top, and their performances include some of the greatest rock ‘n roll songs ever created. The Invictas have played with groups like the Beach Boys, been featured on national TV and interviewed by iHeart Radio. Also on Saturday, Geoff Clough and Cyndi Kingsley will be playing on the Gazebo Stage from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Geoff Clough has over 30 years of experience as a pianist, piano teacher, song writer and performer. Cyndi Kingsley is vocally trained at Hochstein School of Music. Both perform independently in senior communities, festivals and private parties throughout Western
New York State and have joined their talents to bring their lively and memorable show to the Apple Fest. Following them on the Gazebo Stage from 2 to 5 p.m. is Third Degree, Rochester’s blues/rock band. This four-member band has played just about every club and pub in the surrounding area and is famous for giving audiences the best in blues. The Fairport band Mario and the Sundowners will take to the Main Stage on Sunday from 12 to 4 p.m. This four-member band plays classic rock ‘n roll from the 60s and later, including southern rock and covers/ tributes. Rochester’s original groove funk duo Dan & 9 will perform on Sunday at the Gazebo Stage from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fans of Dave Matthews, Johnny Cash, The Black Keys and Jack Johnson will love hearing Dan Schuler on acoustic guitar/vocals and Nine Rizzo on drums/percussion. The duo also plays original tunes. Closing out the Apple Fest from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the Gazebo Stage is Two for the Road, a husband and wife duet that highlights great vocal harmonies complimented by acoustic guitar, percussion, and
instrumental backing tracks. Dick and Doreen Johnson bring more than 30 combined years of musical performing experience, the last 10 as lead vocalists with the popular band Hothouse. In addition to these headliners, the Apple Fest will feature many more performances by students, the popular Generations Band and Hilton Cadets Marching Band, and kids’ favorites like Gary The Happy Pirate, Empire Magic and the Amazing Magic Joe. times so you don’t miss your favorite performers. prepared by Grace Griffee fpr Suburban News and HamlinClarkson Herald

Children’s events will include book signing, crafts, games and fun The Hilton Apple Fest Committee has always made sure that the festival included plenty of activities and entertainment for children and this year is no exception. Entertainment will include performances by the Dinner Dogs on Saturday from 10:15-11 a.m. The Dinner Dogs are a musical group who perform hip, imaginative songs with themes such as self-esteem, safe habits, conflict avoidance, and family life with humor, heart and harmony. Following them is Empire Magic featuring Magician Bill Gormont, who has been performing illusions for over 20 years. Closing out the first day of the festival is Lynn Koch, traditional folk singer with easy-to-learn choruses accompanied by guitar, banjo and dulcimer. On Sunday, Gary the Happy Pirate, a favorite, will have singalongs and dancing combined with humor, child-centered themes and
rock n’ roll elements from 10 to 11 a.m. He is followed by Mike Kornrich whose silly antics and child interaction make his performances of favorite songs even more fun. Last but not least is Amazing Magic Joe, who most recently performed his illusions at the Rochester Fringe Festival. In the Kids’ Korner area, children can also enjoy the Grease Paint Alley Clowns, along with crafts and games sponsored by local nonprofit organizations. New this year will be a book signing event featuring Josie Waverly and her first children’s book, Josie the Singing Butterfly. Best known as a country music performer, Waverly partnered with local illustrator Jamie Rizzo to bring the singing butterfly to life in this first book in the series. The two will have books, coloring books and t-shirts available for sale at the Hilton Community Center. prepared by Grace Griffee

Mud – it might be good for your skin, for slinging and for pigs, but when it comes to the Hilton Apple Fest – well, not so much. The legendary mud of Apple Fest 2013, and some years prior, prompted the Apple Fest Committee to make some changes beginning this year. First, the location of the food vendors has been rearranged so all visitors will be walking on either blacktop or sidewalks when purchasing their food and beverages. Two dining tents also will be strategically placed closer to the stages, so patrons can enjoy live music and performances while they dine. (See the map of festival grounds printed in this section). Shuttle buses will drop off and pick up visitors in closer proximity to the Hilton Community Center making it easier to find the free shuttles to and from the festival site. And for those who arrive hungry (and who doesn’t?) some food vendors will be immediately accessible when getting off the bus. The Walker Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary will be selling pies near the bus stops as well, so visitors can purchase a delicious treat before heading home.
Visitors are being asked to bring donations of non-perishable food or paper products to stock the shelves of the Hilton Parma Emergency Food Shelf and the donation boxes will be located where the buses drop off so visitors can make their donations as soon as they arrive. Festival parking is available at Hilton High School, 400 East Avenue. Free shuttle service is available on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and on Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Handicap accessible parking and shuttle service are also available at Hilton High School. While good weather can never be guaranteed, the Hilton Apple Fest is guaranteed to be a great time with wonderful bands, demonstrations and dancing troupes to entertain all ages, including the Kids’ Korner area with live entertainment and booths, a Farmers Market for fresh produce and specialty food items, Community Row featuring additional nonprofit groups from the area, and, of course, many unique artisans sharing and selling their crafts. prepared by Grace Griffee for Suburban News and Hamlin-Clarkson Herald

IS GO FROM TH
For 33 years, the Hilton Apple Fest Auto Show has been drawing car enthusiasts from near and far. One of the largest shows in the area, the Apple Fest features an average of 550 to 660 vehicles each year. “We try to pick out significant milestones with different models of cars, and then celebrate those milestones by highlighting different ones each year,” said Mike Ahl, Auto Show chairman. Last year, the show celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Corvette and this year’s celebration will focus on the 50th anniversary of the Mustang. The show is held at Village Elementary School, 100 School Lane and this year the field layout has been totally redesigned with the soccer field on the west side and north side of the school grounds both being used so that all of the vehicles can be parked on grass.
“This new layout will give us the room to continue growing to possibly 1,000 vehicles in future years and also makes the show more centralized with the whole show being visible from the DJ tent,” said Ahl. The 34th Annual Hilton Apple Fest Auto Show takes place on Saturday, October 4 with registration from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and judging from 12 to 2 p.m. The fee is $14 the day of the show with proceeds benefitting local charities. Prizes are awarded at 4 p.m. for Club Participation, Hilton Mayor’s Choice, Parma Town Supervisor’s Choice, Best Mustang of the Show, and first, second and third place in each class. Hilton Apple Fest features over 120 artisans and craftspeople With everything from fine art and jewelry to photography and pottery, the Hilton Apple Fest Arts and Craft Show has been a huge draw to the area for the past 33 years. This year’s show is a juried selection of over 120 booths featuring handcrafted creations from artisans as far away as Pennsylvania, Illinois and Florida. Elijiah Smith from Kanona, NY has been participating in the Hilton Apple Fest for the past four years. “I like the Apple Fest because of the people, the food, and the wonderful atmosphere,” he said. “Also the apple crisp is a huge bonus.” Smith is a glassblower, who in addition to selling his blown glass items at craft shows, also works at the Corning Museum of Glass as one of the hot glass demonstrators. “I have the privilege of working with some of the best glass blowers in the world,” said Smith, who also teaches glass blowing at The Studio in Corning. At the Apple Fest, Smith’s booth will feature blown glass apples, a variety of pumpkins, snowmen, ornaments and other items. Artisans and crafters who partici-
pate in the Apple Fest must submit at least seven photos of their work along with their application. On Saturday, judges visit each exhibit and award ribbons in the following categories: Clothing, Decorative Wood, Drawing/Painting, Fine Art, Floral, Glass, Jewelry, Mixed Media, Photography, Pottery/Ceramics, Special Media, Textiles, Wood, and Best of Show. Awards are presented on Saturday at 4 p.m. on the Main Stage. The winner of each category will not have to be juried to be accepted into next year’s Apple Fest and the Best of Show receives a free single booth in next year’s show. Crafters are also encouraged to participate in the Craft Raffle by donating a homemade item from their booth. Proceeds from the raffle are donated to a local non-profit organization. Thanks to the generosity of 2013 crafters, $1,511 was donated to the Hilton Community Council of Churches. prepared by Grace Griffee for Suburban News and Hamlin Clarkson Herald

Hilton Apple Fest 2013 -- In spite of the rain -- still fun! A pack of Cub Scouts, from St. Leo’s Pack 125, display the wares they are selling, colored cotton candy. They are: Dylan Meyer, Lucas Edsall, Aiden Hryhorenko and Logan McGranaghan. Above, right, Hilton resident Arlo Lupia, 3, enjoys an apple at, what else, the Apple Fest!
Haley Bennett, 6, from Brockport, is happy with her choice from Corey’s Apple Pond.
Mason Jackson, 4, from Rochester, worked at opening his apple cider jug.
Hilton historian Dave Crumb helps Hilton’s Hayley Wolf, 8, peel an apple using an aged apple peeler from the Hilton museum. The corer was manufactured in 1890 and the German steel cutting blade is still going strong. At right, Hayley holds the entire apple skin she peeled off.
Photographs by Walter Horylev
Zarpentine’s apple products enticed a lot of customers. The fused glass flowers created by Ron Frear, for Siox Ltd. were popular with shoppers. Ron makes the glass himself and uses enamels in between a sandwich of glass to make the objects.
A ‘39 Plymouth Business Coupe owned by Tom O’Connell was outstanding in orange at the Apple Fest Auto Show.
Sierra Sanchez, 8, a Buffalo resident, is ready to enjoy a dish of Apple Fest’s famous apple crisp. Left -- Yes, there was mud -- rain showers on both the Saturday and Sunday mornings of Apple Fest left many areas with a thick coating of mud from foot traffic . Parma’s Carol Richardson gave up and went the nofootwear route to shop around. Around 2 p.m. the sun came out and the temperature climbed to 80 degrees giving the fall festival a totally summer feel.

Contests
September 28, 2014
Westside News Inc.
Apple Pie Contest brings out the area’s best bakers Pies date back to the early settlers when pie crust was used as a convenient way of keeping and transporting food. Since the Pilgrims brought apple spurs to the New World with them, apple pie was one of the most popular - thus coining the phrase “American as apple pie.” Apple pie has come a long way since then and some of the finest are entries in a contest at the Hilton Apple Fest. The annual Apple Pie Contest gives bakers an opportunity to test their skills for cash prizes. Winners of the Adult Division will receive $100 for first place, $50 for second place, and $25 for third place. Winners in the Youth Division will receive $50 for first place and $25 for second place. Betsy Forjone has entered the Hilton Apple Pie Contest every year since 2008 and has won the coveted first prize title twice - in 2008 and 2012. “I like the challenge,” she said. “I always try to make a pie that’s better looking and better tast-
ing than the last.” One of her secrets, which she’s willing to share, is that she tries different and unexpected flavor combinations. “I pay attention to what is trending with the foodies,” she said. Of course, getting people to judge the contest is no problem. This year, there will be 10 judges total. They will be evaluating each pie first by appearance, then taste and texture using a point rating system. All pies must be submitted at the Hilton Community Center Ingham Room, 59 Henry Street, between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Saturday, October 4. The winners will be announced at 4 p.m. at the Main Stage the same day. The contest is open to all residents of New York State. More details and a complete entry form can be found at HiltonAppleFest.org. prepared by Grace Griffee for Suburban News and Hamlin Clarkson Herald
