When Music, Like Food, Was Local
Tuesday, April 12, 2016 - 7:00 pm Greece Public Library In collaboration with the New York Council for the Humanities, the Greece Historical Society presents this lecture/demonstration by Dave Ruch who is a full-time musician and educator, specializing in the historical and traditional music of his native New York State. Dave travels regionally and internationally from his home base in Buffalo, New York. His work has been featured on American Public Media, in Emmy Award-winning documentaries, and on stages across North America and the United Kingdom. During this presentation Dave will introduce a compelling window into the self-made entertainment of our ancestors by drawing a direct parallel with the contemporary local-foods movement. In the days before electronic media (and sometimes well after), New Yorkers made their own music just as they provided for their own food. And, as often as not, this music was “locally sourced, coming from just around the corner rather than around the world. Songs were learned from neighbors, coworkers, elders in the community, grandparents, and were passed down through the generations. This program is free and open to the general public, it is made possible through the Public Scholars program with the support of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Please note that pre-registration is required for this program. Register online at the Greece Public Library website http://www.greecepubliclibrary.org/ go to calendar and click on event. Or call the library at 585-225-8951. Please register each person attending the program. Provided Information and Photo

What a great way to boost your fitness self-esteem… by doing a triathlon! The triathlon race has quickly become one of the definitive benchmarks of overall fitness, endurance, and athleticism. An Iron Distance triathlon is more intense than completing a marathon or biking a century. Nothing quite says “I am Fit” like completing a triathlon. The sport has been gaining in popularity over the past 10 years, steadily growing in both the number of races nationally as well as the number of participants. If you’ve ever daydreamed about crossing that triathlon finish line there is no better time to make it a reality. Triathlon season begins very soon. The season kicks off in Greece with the Second Annual Rochester Duathlon on Sunday, May 22, 2016 at the Grace and Truth Sports Park on N. Greece Road. Duathlon is very similar to a Triathlon, but with out the swimming leg. Joe McMahon, Race Director for RocDU and Vice President of Rochester Area Triathletes, feels this event is a great season opener for area triathletes as well as a perfect Joe McMahon first event for those who have dreams of completing a triathlon. Joe participated in his first triathlon just over 26 years ago as part of a team participating at the Triathlon at Hamlin Beach in 1990. Since then he has completed 520 races of which 33 were iron distance. He is ranked #17 by Lake Placid Ironman for races finished. On May 22, 2016 at 8AM the event begins at Grace and Truth Park located at 373 North Greece Road. There will be two distances to choose from, Intermediate which is a 5k run, 24 miles bike, and 10k run, and the shorter distance which is ideal for beginners, called the Sprint it is a 1.5 mile run, 16 mile bike and a 5k run. The running course is low impact and in the park with no traffic. The park offers great visibility for friends and family to watch and cheer on the racers. The biking part of the event is also on a flat course and routed on safe Greece streets east of the park. To learn more about the race, view the course or register visit http://www.active.com/rochester-ny/duathlon/races/roc-du2016. All proceeds from the event will go to the Wounded Warriors Project. For more information on the triathlons in the area visit http://www.rochestertriathletes.com/ Tami Mungenast Personal Trainer and Wellness Coach

National Child Abuse Prevention Month and National Crime Victims’ Rights Week by Tami Raco
April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. It is a time to acknowledge the importance of families and communities working together to prevent child abuse and neglect, and to promote the social and emotional well-being of children and families. During the month of April, and throughout the year, communities are encouraged to share child abuse and neglect prevention awareness strategies and activities, and to promote prevention across the country. In recognition of the 40th anniversary of the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act, there is now a historical timeline of significant moments in child abuse prevention in the United States Child Abuse is an epidemic. Nearly five children die every day from abuse or neglect, more than from Juvenile Diabetes or Aids. One in ten children will be sexually abused by the time they are 18 years old, and only ten percent will tell. Ninety percent of abusers are someone the child knows, loves and trusts. More than a third of the children evaluated live in the suburbs, and more than forty percent of those children are under the age of seven. Eva Salinas is the Victim’s/Witness Coordinator at the Greece Police Department. Eva works closely with both child and adult crime victims in the community. She has been working in this capacity for 23 years providing assistance to victims of any crime. She assists with court accompaniments, filing claims, crime court information, referral
benefits, transportation, crisis intervention and virtually any of the victim’s needs, helping with recovery and healing. Eva works closely with Bivona, a Child Advocacy Center. It is a safe welcoming place where children who have been sexually or physically abused can begin their journey to healing. The center is a collaboration of many services under one roof designed to protect, treat and counsel the child and their families. Bivona provides a compassionate place for child abuse intervention with support through prevention, investigation and prosecution. Bivona partners with 21 agencies in the area to coordinate the most effective array of services to serve the needs of the victims. The Greece Police Department is one of their partners. To learn more or support the community as they recognize both National Child Abuse Prevention Month and the National Crime Victims’ Rights week you are welcome to attend the Annual Family Day Event on Saturday, April 16, 2016 from 10am-1pm at Highland Park. This event helps promote awareness and provide the community access to over 20 resources with valuable information and free activities including; meeting Officer McGruff, face painting, K-9 unit, Mounted patrol and much more. For more information visit www.4victims.org or www.BivonaCAC.org or contact Eva at the Greece Police Department at 585-7200822.

Arbor Day Foundation Names the Town of Greece Tree City USA
The Town of Greece was named a 2015 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. The Town of Greece is one of more than 3,400 Tree City USAs across the country to be given this title. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the United States Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. Greece achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements which include a tree board, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation. “Preserving our town’s natural beauty is a very important mission. I am honored that the Arbor Day Foundation has granted our Town with this distinguished title and is a testament to our community’s commitment in conserving our forestry and protecting the natural beauty of our town.” said Supervisor Bill Reilich. “The presence of trees in our urban and suburban centers is vital to the public infrastructure of our town and helps to provide an abundant of environmental, social and economic benefits. The Arbor Day Foundation is a multi-community, non-forprofit conservation and educational organization with the task to inspire people to plant, nurture, and respect trees. The Seed of Wildflower A Locally Written and Produced Movie by Tami Raco
Director Nicholas DiBella grew up in Greece and graduated from Cardinal Mooney High School. After high school he pursued a career in engineering and began working at Eastman Kodak as an Optical Technician for camera lenses. In this field, Nick began to develop his passion for photography and shooting short movies, and this became his hobby. When Kodak offered employees a program called the “Camera Club” the employees were invited to borrow different cameras from Kodak for use in personal projects. This is when Nick’s interest really took off. He recalls borrowing the Super 8 camera and he enjoyed shooting short films with it on his weekends. It wasn’t long before one of his films ended up on Showtime as a filler piece between movies. This really fueled Nick’s passion for filmmaking. In the early 90’s Kodak offered buy-out plans to their employees as an effort to scale back on their workforce. Nick and his wife agreed that was a good time for him to leave and begin to turn his passion into a career. This was a risky venture but Nick devoted a lot of his heart, time and energy into learning how to write screen plays. Seven years after Nick left Kodak, he began selling his scripts. They were initially sold to production companies for cable films, but the landmark moment was when Warner Bros. purchased one of Nick’s films. “That sort of changed everything. It was a validation and it made me believe that I could write on that level,” DiBella says. Warner Bros. then hired Nick to write another screenplay and that led to more screen writing work for him. Nick’s first full length movie was Kings Faith, released in 2013. The movie was the first production under Faith Street Films which consists of local investors with the aim to produce inspirational entertainment. Nick wrote and directed the movie and it was produced with Pastor Kirk Dueker of Hope Lutheran Church on Vintage Lane in Greece. When Pastor Kirk was asked how he got involved with this project, he said it was “divine intersection.” Both Pastor Kirk and Nick felt this movie was a great way to reach an audience that isn’t typically reached in Christian themed movies, with a message of hope and inspiration. King’s Faith became a great success reaching two million viewers. After King’s Faith was completed, Nick began working on a Public Service Announcements for Bivona. Bivona is a local Child Advocacy Center, and Nick worked on a PSA about the sexual abuse of children. This led Nick to learn all about the staggering statistics of this horrible crime. “I felt that perhaps we could shine a light on this very important subject through our movie and maybe in the process we can impact a few lives. No one should have their freedom stolen like that, or their joy,” DiBella says. This is where the seed of Wildflower was planted. Wild-
flower is the second film of Faith Street Films. It is written and directed by Nick and produced by Pastor Kirk and Jim Pavone. Wildflower was written by Nick to be an “inspirational thriller,” a phrase Nick coined himself. “I wanted to come up with a story that challenged the genre a bit. Faith films are usually very safe and predictable, our goal with Wildflower is to engage the audience in a different way. So Wildflower continued on page 19

started from that place. I was going to have our main character, Chloe suffer from PTSD which she does, but after writing a bit I felt we needed to go a little deeper, to have her a bit more broken and hiding a secret.” DiBella says. Wildflower is about a gifted, resilient and spirited college student (Chloe) who finds solace from a difficult childhood in her art. Terrifying dreams begin to haunt Chloe, which leads her to believe that these dreams may be from a suppressed memory about the strange disappearance of a teenage girl 12 years ago. Chloe’s search to find the answers sends her on a journey that forces her to confront her own past traumas. The message in Wildflower is created to be universal and uplifting to the spirit through difficult times. The entire movie was shot locally using the charm of the local towns such as Spencerport, Brockport, Clarkson, Holley, Greece and Fairport. When Nick was asked what made him choose the towns he did to film it in, he said “It all started with the bridge. The bridge was a key set piece to the movie. I started thinking about the canal and the canal bridges. A lot of those bridges are one lane with so much character. Then I drove all along the canal from Lyons to Brockport. I felt the Spencerport Trimmer Road and Martha Street bridges had exactly what the movie needed. Brockport felt like a college town which was perfect for our story. The bridges of Spencerport merged nicely with that. We also shot in Fairport at an amazing church there (the First Baptist Church of Fairport) and used it as one of the other major sets to our film.” Other locations included downtown Brockport and many of its businesses, a home in Clarkson, a home in Holley, the Sheriff substation, Unity Hospital in Greece, as well as Roberts Wesleyan College. Even local law enforcement

assisted with some of the scenes, Greece and Brockport Police officers, and a Monroe County Sheriff Deputy are in the movie. Although the main actors and actresses are from Los Angeles, CA, the community from Hope Lutheran Church and other town residents and business owners helped immensely to make this production run as smoothly as it did. The main stars often commented to the director and producers on how incredibly warm and welcoming the community was while they were here filming. Members of Hope Lutheran Church helped with man power, food service, set up and transportation. Nick remarked that the generosity of the Hope Lutheran Church was pivotal. “We couldn’t have made it without this church,” Nick says. Wildflower had its theatrical release at Pittsford Cinema on February 5, 2016. It will be released to the public on DVD on April 5, 2016. There is a DVD release party at Alpha & Omega Christian store in Greece on Tuesday, April 5, 2016 from 6:30pm-8:00pm. The director Nick DiBella will be there along with the other producers. The movie will be available at retailers such as Walmart and Amazon. In May 2016 it will be released digitally and can be purchased on ITunes or Digital TV. It will also be released internationally and will be seen in over 200 theaters in Latin America. In June 2016, Wildflower will be on cable’s Lifetime Network and it is also expected to be on Netflix by the end of 2016 or early in 2017. License - A Novel by Diane Rivoli Chapter Five LICENSE TO BE GRAPE
Vinifera – That was what they called their band. Greg and his brothers, Pete and Eli, had tossed around several other names like Galaxy or The Decibels or the really lame Germ Warfare before they had come up with the way cool Vinifera. Vinifera had to do with grapes and with a last name like Grapensteter -well, it was like Karma or something, totally awesome! And then to make it even more dope, they all dyed their hair purple, ‘cus, you know, grapes were purple! Greg was the lead singer and also played the keyboards and electric guitar. Pete played the bass guitar and sang backup and Eli was the drummer. Greg thought they were kick ass. They had gigs almost every weekend in one bar or another. And once they had actually been hired to play at a wedding reception! They even had fans! Their biggest fan was his girlfriend, Dixie. Almost every show, he could see her out in the audience jamming to the beat. When they took a break, she’d come running up to him all excited, with those blue/green eyes of hers sparkling and shining. She’d throw her arms around his neck and tell him he was great, that he sounded just like Chris Martin and that he had the moves like Jagger! Of course, there were always a few hecklers in the audience. Douches that he used to go to high school with who were way more interested in tossing back a few than listening to the music. They thought they were clever as
hell. “Look, it’s a bunch of sour Grapensteters!” “Whew…smells like rotten Grapensteters around here.” “Hey, the Grapensteters of Wrath! Maybe we can have a Grapensteter stomping party later!” Him and his bros just ignored those morons. After a gig, him and Dixie would hop in his Malibu and drive over to The Clover and Fern Café for a late night snack. She’d usually get an egg salad and alfalfa sprout wrap and a cup of herbal tea. His preferred grub was the double decker “Here’s the Beef” burger with fries and a beer. “That was some unreal show tonight, wasn’t it Dixie?” Greg gloated as he stuffed fries in his mouth like a chain smoker. “I was on fire! I really think that someday Vinifera’s gonna be big! Maybe even bigger than Coldplay or Maroon 5 or even the Stones!” “You were totally fantastic! Rock’n!!” Dixie raved. As she nibbled on her wrap, her elated expression turned thoughtful. “But you know, Greg, if you really want to make it big you can’t just do covers. You have to sing your own originals!” continued on page 25

Greece Historical Society Lecture Series
On Tuesday, March 8, 2016 bestselling author and awardwinning sports columnist Scott Pitoniak discussed the days when Rochester had a major-league baseball team (the Rochesters in 1890), and a NFL team (the Jeffersons in the early 1920s), and a NBA team (the Royals in the 1940s and ‘50s) during his presentation “Rochester’s Time in the Big Leagues” part of a Greece Historical Society and Museum lecture series. The program was held at the Greece Public Library. During his discussion Pitoniak also touched on Rochester’s reputation as a big-league golf city and Rochester’s current major-league teams The Knighthawks of the Nation Lacrosse League and the Western New York Flash of the Women’s Professional Soccer League. At the conclusion of the program, Pitoniak answered questions and signed copies of his book “Baseball In Rochester.” Provided Information Photos by Karen Fien

How To Control Your Emotions In Volatile Markets? For the past few years, the stock market has been fairly stable. But in 2015, we’ve saw enough volatility to make some investors jittery. How can you stay calm in the face of potentially unsettling market movements? You can take three important steps. First, don’t get caught up in how short-term events, such as plunging oil prices, can affect the markets. Instead, focus on the fundamentals, such as corporate earnings and economic growth. Second, broaden your investment mix. If you own too many stocks, you could be hit hard by a market downturn. Build a portfolio of stocks, bonds and other types of investments appropriate for your risk tolerance and time horizon. Finally, always look for quality investment vehicles — because these are the investments that potentially hold up best in “up” and “down” markets. By taking these steps, you can remove much of the anxiety that can accompany periods of market volatility — and remain focused on your long-term goals. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.
I have noticed a constant ringing in my ears that is really starting to be a nuisance. Is there anything I can do?
That ringing in your ears is a common complaint also known as Tinnitus. According to the American Tinnitus Association, as many as 50 million Americans experience tinnitus. Tinnitus is caused from conditions to the middle or outer ear, prolonged exposure to loud noise, and high doses of medication and/or trauma to the head or neck. To minimize ringing you can control the stress and fatigue in your life, avoid loud noises, wear proper hearing protection in high noise areas, make sure you are getting the proper nutrition and exercise your body needs, and reduce or eliminate your alcohol and caffeine consumption. Try these steps to help minimize the ringing. At Hart Hearing Centers there are many options for treatment including masking and counseling. One of our audiologists can evaluate your specific situation and develop a program to alleviate the distress of Tinnitus. Call Hart Hearing Centers today to speak with one of our audiologists. “Yah, but where am I gonna get original songs? I’m awful at song writing! You’ve got to come up with rhymes and melodies and stuff!” “Don’t be such a defeatist! Start with something simple, something you’re interested in. Like a song about your guitar! Or even about a hamburger! How about a song about your purple hair? Or,” Dixie gave Greg a sly wink, “you could write about me, your fluffy little Dixie Chickie!” “Oh! Oh! I think I’ve got one!!” Greg smirked and started singing, “If you’ll be my Dixie Chickie, I’ll be your Tennessee lamb….” “Cover!!” Dixie yelled. Greg’s eyes opened wide and a laugh tried to escape from his mouth. But he had just taken a sip of beer! He grabbed a napkin and shoved it over his face seconds before the beer came spewing out. Some even gushed out of his nose! Conversation was a bust for the rest of that night. Anything they tried to say seemed hilarious beyond words. His side was aching, his eyes were running and Dixie almost fell out of her chair. It had been so insane. Greg knew Dixie was right about the songs though. No band ever got big singing covers. And he tried, he really did! But nothing came to him. He Asked Pete and Eli to give it a try too. They were every bit as lousy at it as he was. One night, Dixie strolled into the bar while they were setting up and pulled some papers out of her purse. “Look!” she beamed, handing the papers to Greg, “I wrote some songs for Vinifera! Only the words so far. We’d still have to come up with the tunes but see this one here, ‘Premonition’? This is the one I like best! Read it! Let me know what you think!” Exhilaration and vibrancy were practically dripping off of her. She was hopping with anticipation. Greg read over her ‘Premonition’ song and a few of the others. It was hard to concentrate with Dixie watching his eyes move across the page and scanning his face trying to read him. It made him nervous. She was tripping him out. “I don’t know, Dixie,” he finally said. “They’re kind of lame. They don’t make any sense and they sound way too girlie!” Dixie was hurt. And mad. “Girlie? What do you mean, ‘girlie’? There’s nothing girlie about them! They’re about dreams and feelings. Guys have dreams and feelings don’t they? And dreams are bizarre. Weird. Just like songs are sometimes. And at first they don’t seem to make sense, but then you listen to the way the lyrics join with the music and fuse with the emotion in the singer’s voice and, all of a sudden, you get it! Come on, Greg! You sing songs. You ought to know that! Use your imagination! Don’t be so thick!” Now Greg was hurt and mad too. He knew he should have tried to smooth things over, tell her that he’d look at
her songs again later when he could concentrate on them better. And he should tell her she was right! He did know about weird lyrics. He covered Coldplay all time. Their lyrics never made sense on paper. But in a song? He knew what every one of them was about. How the words were spaced, if they were whispered or shouted, if the voice laughed or cried them out. That’s what made the lyrics come alive, made you feel their meaning deep down in your gut, even if you couldn’t explain it in your head. Why did Dixie always have to be right? Instead he shot back, “I’ve got a right to my opinion, don’t I? I don’t like them. I think your songs suck!” And when he saw Dixie’s face get all red and tears start to form in the corners of her eyes, he still didn’t shut that hole in his face. “And how do you know I didn’t already write something on my own? I don’t need you to write any freakin’ songs for me! What makes you think you’re so smart? You’re just a nothing clerk at The Dollar Store!” With tears streaming down her face, Dixie wrenched the papers, her songs, out of Greg’s hands. “You’re an jerk!” she shrieked. She turned and flew out of the bar and into the night. After that, everything changed. Greg tried to call Dixie, but she wouldn’t answer. He sent her texts but she didn’t respond. i m sorry…i luv u...i mis u Things weren’t much good without Dixie around. He felt like crap. His singing was crap. The shows were crap. His favorite ‘Here’s the Beef’ burger was crap. Everything was crap. When Dixie’s name finally showed up on his phone several weeks later, he was so eager that he almost dropped it. And after the call, he did drop it. She hadn’t called to say hello, let’s get back together. She had called to say goodbye. Dixie was leaving town. Tears started to sting his eyes but he tried to hold them off. Famous rock stars didn’t bawl. Actually, they did ball! Quite a lot from what he’d heard, with all those groupies around and all. Hahaha – B. A. W. L. and B. A. L. L. What did they call that? A double entendre or something? He smiled but only for a moment. All his smiles turned to frowns these days. All days were worthless days without Dixie. What good was anything without his Dixie? His fluffy little Dixie Chickie? Maybe he could write a song after all. Without. That’s what he’d call it. Without. ### Look online at www.greecenewsny.com for Chapter 6 on 4/11 and Chapter 7 on 4/18, with Chapter 8 appearing in our print edition available on April 25, 2016. Stream & Lake Map of New York LOST STREAM MAP The STREAM & LAKE MAP OF NEW YORK resembles another map - known to Pennsylvania anglers as the “Lost Stream Map.” The “Stream Map of Pennsylvania” was completed in 1965 after a thirty-year effort by Howard Higbee, a former Penn State Professor. Professor Higbee succeeded in creating a map of the highest detail possible...a map that shows every stream and lake. He painstakingly plotted by hand, the location of 45,000 miles of streams onto a 3 x 5 foot map. The map sold extremely well – until it was lost several years after it first appeared in print. Incredibly, the printer entrusted with the original drawing and printing plates declared bankruptcy, then carelessly hauled Higbee’s 30 years of work to the landfill. The few remaining dog-eared copies became a prized fisherman’s possession. Professor Higbee was offered $400 for one of his last maps. And state agencies were forced to keep their copies under lock and key. The experts had always told Professor Higbee that reprints were impossible, because the maps were printed in non-photographic blue. Then, in 1991, at the age of 91, Howard Higbee’s dream came true. Computers made it possible to reprint the map. Holding an updated map, Howard said, “I never thought I’d live to see this day.” Then, by combining Professor Higbee’s knowledge with computer technology – the STREAM & LAKE MAP OF NEW YORK was created.
Why every angler and boater needs this map
Professor Higbee’s® Stream Map of New York is the first and only highly detailed map of its kind. The 3.5 foot by 4.5 foot New York map shows 65,000 miles of streams plus lakes.

Scouting for Food On March 19, 2016, Seneca Waterways Council for Boy Scouts of America held their Annual Food Drive in support of Food Shelves in Monroe and surrounding counties. Troop 48 and Crew 277 from Greece, and Troop 165 from Spencerport along with the Greece Police and Police Explores helped gather, sort and pack the food donated to the Scouting for Food at Greece Odyssey School on Maiden Lane, Greece. The Greece Police and Police Explorers also helped with directing traffic so that everything went smoothly. Collected food went to Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf, The Lord’s House, and St. Regis Food Cupboard. Food was donated from neighborhoods in Greece and brought to the collection site by 112 youth and 77 adult volunteers. Over 50 volunteers worked hard

Owl Prowl - A Guided Walk Through The Owl Woods Pictured is Casey Wright who led the Owl Prowl at Braddock Bay on Saturday, March 19, 2016, sponsored by Braddock Bay Raptor Research. Braddock Bay is well known as a migratory stop-over for Northern Saw-whet and Long-eared Owls. The next Owl Prowl will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at 7:30 A.M. This is an early morning walk to look for roosting owls in the Owl Woods on Manitou Beach Road at Braddock Bay, led by an experienced BBRR guide. The trail is mulched, easy walking, suitable for all ages, and can be muddy in spots, appropriate footwear is suggested. Space is limited and reservations are required. E-mail: information@bbrr.org or call 585-267-5483 to reserve a spot. There is a suggested donation of $3 per person. Meeting spot is on Manitou Beach Road, just off the Lake Ontario State Parkway.
