Designated Surveillance Location for Internet Purchase Exchanges Established at Greece Town Hall Campus There is now a designated area at the Greece Town Hall Campus for safe and secure internet purchase exchanges to occur. Signs featuring the Town of Greece seal and reading “Internet Purchase Exchange Location – This Area Is Under Video Surveillance” have been placed directly in front of the light pole off the Northeast corner of the Greece Town Court building. This location, which is to the right of the sally port exits, was chosen for the good security video coverage in place that will help to ensure the safety of all involved in internet purchase exchanges. A fixed camera with an excellent focus setting will be concentrated directly on the lot. “When a constituent reached out to me this weekend via Facebook with a suggestion regarding designating an area to conduct internet purchase business, I thought it was a great idea and looked into what could be done. I worked with our Department of Public Works and Informational Services Teams to create a sign and designate a secure area on the Greece Town Hall Campus for safe internet purchase exchange business to be conducted. I am always interested in suggestions and feedback from Greece Town Residents, and would like to thank the individual who reached out with their suggestion,” Supervisor Bill Reilich said. 21 Stories for Scouts to descend Kodak Tower 9th annual rappelling event supports local scouting programs Seneca Waterways Council Boy Scouts of America, along with event leadership, announced a big change in view for its 9th annual 21 Stories For Scouts rappelling event. This year, rappelling enthusiasts will take to the side of the Kodak Tower to rappel over 300 feet, beginning their descent under the iconic Kodak letters and landing at street level on the Monroe Community College Campus. This “extreme” fundraising event is open to anyone interested in the challenge of rappelling skyscrapers or who wishes to fulfill a bucket list. All participants must pre-register online at 21storiesforscouts. org and raise $1,000 in either a single contribution or through collected pledges. For a Parent/Child or Scoutmaster/youth Scout team to rappel together, it’s $1,500 for the experience. A corporate team with five rappellers can take to the ropes for $4,000. The only requirement is the participant must weigh 100 pounds. Event organizers noted that there are many ways to participate
and make a difference in a Scout’s life: be a rappeller, sponsor a rappeller, rappel as a company team, “Toss Your Boss,” or make a general donation. Companies are also encouraged to participate with employee teams of five or more rappellers and use the event as a team building opportunity. The team goes through training together and will share a common experience through their rappel. Back this year is “Little” Joe Aiello. Aiello made history two years ago when he became the oldest rappeller at the age of 89. He then broke another record by raising more than $41,000 himself to support the Scouts. “Little Joe” said he’d rappel again when he turned 95 but he decided not to wait and returns this year to rappel the Kodak Tower at the age of 91 noting that, if he can do it (twice) at his age, anyone can do it. Stephen Hoitt, Seneca Waterways Council Scout Executive/CEO continued on page 34

Battling the Heroin Epidemic
Monroe County Sheriff’s Office partners with the Rochester Police Department by Tami Raco
Save Lives. That was the directive issued by Sheriff Todd Baxter when establishing the Incident Command Post. An Incident Command Post has been established in the Rochester Police department to house a central location for the Heroin Task Force efforts. In response to the deadly opioid epidemic, the Monroe County Sheriff’s office and the Rochester Police Department have created this post to combine the efforts of local law enforcement agencies to help bring timely resources to the community. According the Monroe County Sheriff Department the Incident Command Post will result in the distribution of realtime actionable data that allows police agencies to search for patterns and trends that will lead to long-term investigations and the successful prosecution of heroin dealers and suppliers. Daily reports are turned into tangible assignments that are distributed at the Command Post briefing each morning. These reports are based upon incidents that occurred the previous evening. A law enforcement officer or service provider is assigned and tracked. Lieutenant Andrew Delyser, Commander for the Post, reports directly to the Chief Deputy Michael Fowler on all Command Post matters and receives his direction from Sheriff Baxter, District Attorney Doorley, RPD Chief Ciminelli, and Monroe County Public Safety Director Robert Burns. This collabora-
tive effort also includes County Crime Analysis Field Intelligence Officers as well as several other non-governmental agencies. According to Lt. Delyser, the Command Post, started in early February, is positioned to provide three primary services including: • Act as a Law Enforcement Agency to identify dealers, arrest them and reduce the amount of drugs in our community. • To provide education to the community. The role of educating the community is critical according to Delyser. With the goal of saving lives, one of the most effective ways to do this is by helping to prevent addiction by educating the community most at risk - high school students that face heavy peer pressure. • Providing treatment assistance to those who experienced an opioid related incident. Although a non-traditional role of law enforcement, the Command Post is on the front lines in this war and will provide intercession with opioid related incidents and overdoses. They can now take the opportunity to connect an individual with an addiction disorder with treatment within the first 24-36 hours. The Heroin Task Force is working closely with treatment continued on page 29

Aquinas Girls Basketball Overcome Adversity to Win Section V Title by Tami Raco
It’s been 6 years since the AQ Girls basketball team has taken a Section V crown. On Saturday, March 2nd they won their sectional game defeating Honeoye Falls Lima 57-52. AQ Senior, Kayla Jackson from Greece scored 22 points and was named A2 Tournament MVP. She picked up her fourth foul when there was less than 2 minutes left in the game. AQ freshman Chanel Alexander was sent in and she dominated the remainder of the game scoring 10 of her 14 points in the 4th quarter helping bring AQ to their title win. Mark Loria is the head coach for Aquinas Girls Basketball. He started coaching at AQ 2 years ago after coaching 5 years for East Rochester girls’ basketball where he is also a Special Education teacher. Previously Loria coached 15 years as a football coach. “I love coaching at high school level,” Loria said. Loria, reflecting on the AQ season said, “We overcame a lot of adversity and that is what I am most proud of.” Loria’s team is very young. Aside from the 3 seniors, the team was comprised of 4 freshman (Chanel Alexander of Rochester, Julie Sonricker and Isabelle Schifano both of Greece, and Marisa DelCorvo of Hilton), 3 sophomores (Nia Wil-
liams Matthews of Rochester, Michaela Conti of Greece, and Olivia Clemente of Chili), and 1 junior (Christina Gillan of Rochester). The team and coach overcame significant adversity throughout their season from injuries to family losses. Loria himself recently lost his Dad to cancer. Senior, Ayanna Sampson of Chili was suffering from 2 ACL tears and had surgery prior to the season. Loria was proud to see how hard Ayanna worked to battle back to play a great season helping bring the team to the title win. Erica Knapp, an AQ senior from Chili, was AQ’s best shooter and she also overcame her injuries this season. Knapp is going on to MCC to play both basketball and Lacrosse. Kayla Jackson the teams MVP will be going on to play D1 basketball at UMBC. Despite the physical and emotional adversities throughout their season according to Loria, “They learned some of the greatest lessons of life-How to persevere and overcome.” AQ season ended Tuesday, March 6th when they were defeated by Class A1 champions Pittsford Mendon. Pittsford Mendon 55-Aquinas 30. Aquinas concludes the season at 17-7.
Front Row: Julie Sonricker, Isabelle Schifano, Ayanna Sampson, Chanel Alexander, Liv Clemente, Michaela Conti Back Row: Coach Anthony Damore, Head Coach Mark Loria, Nia Williams-Matthews, Christina Gillan, Kayla Jackson, Erica Knapp, Marisa DelCorvo, Coach Jason Hinchcliffe and Coach Rob Cont.

I hope everyone has been able to enjoy the first couple of months of the New Year! Here at Town Hall we are getting a head start on all the great programs we have planned for this spring and summer. This summer will be filled with many Town favorite events like the Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration, our Town’s Summer Concert Series, and the Jerry J. Helfer Memorial Food Truck Rodeo. Keep a look out for more details about these events and many more on my Facebook page and the Town of Greece website. We have held many fun events at the Community and Senior Center this past month, including the first ever Daddy Daughter Dance! Be sure to save the date for our 5th annual Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration! This celebration has become a beloved event – from the Freedom Run 5k in the morning to the spectacular fireworks display in the evening. The event, which is free and open to the public, also features a Super Hero Sprint for kids, children’s activities, food trucks, and performances by well-known music artists. This year, we will be bringing back the wildly popular band Orleans! Make sure to also save the date for our annual Jerry J. Helfer Memorial Food Truck Rodeo on June 10th, which will be in conjunction with our first Summer Concert featuring Elvis Lives! 100 dads and daughters turned out for a magical evening of dancing, crafts, food, and photo opportunities. Participants danced throughout the night to the YMCA, hokey pokey and more while enjoying their night out. A special thanks to the Recreation Team and volunteers who helped make this night possible. We were happy to see so many fathers and daughters participate in this fun event! This Past month we hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for the first microbrewery to open in Greece: Wood Kettle Brewing. This new business, which is owned and operated by Mark Miles, Jeff Allen, and their late partner, Bill Allen, offers a variety of beer, wine, and food. This family-friendly establishment is located at 1192 Manitou Road. I’m very excited to announce a new feature on the Greece Town Hall Campus. We now have a designated secure area by the Greece Town Court Building for safe and secure internet business to be conducted. Signs featuring the Town of Greece seal and reading “Internet Purchase Exchange Location – This Area Is Under Video Surveillance” have been placed directly in front of the light pole off the Northeast corner of the Greece Town Court building. This location features a fixed camera with an excellent focus setting that will serve to record and monitor the transactions with a focus on safety. As always, I enjoy hearing feedback from residents about programming and other Town-related issues. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office or visit our website. boasts a selection of living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, entertainment options, accent furniture, and mattresses. I wish Ruby Gordon owners Raymond Ruby and Aaron Ruby and their families and team great success in their new location! As always, I enjoy hearing feedback from residents about programming and other town related matters. Your Greece Parks and Recreation Team by Barbara Burke
Three years ago the Town of Greece joined their Parks Department and their Recreation Department together, created a new position, Director of Parks and Recreation, and hired Peter O’Brien as the Director of Parks and Recreation. “When Supervisor Bill Reilich came into Greece in 2014 he made it a top priority to improve the quality of life for Greece through Parks and Recreation. I came into the Director position and had a staff all set up. It has been great right from the start,” O’Brien said. O’Brien’s job is to oversee operations, budgets and planning for the Community and Senior Center and the 300 acres of parks in Greece that includes parklands, shelters, lodges and 45 miles of hiking trails. He is quick to give all the credit for their successes to the Parks and Recreation staff. The 13 full time staff members of the Parks and Recreation Department are a team. “It’s really easy to work when you have people that want to be here and love their job,” O’Brien said. O’Brien has been working in the field of Parks and Recreation for over 20 years. He said, “It is great to work for the Town of Greece and the community. If you need something you present a request and they will support you. They really get the importance of what improving the quality of life in the community through Parks and Recreation means.” In the Town Recreation Department the Rec Team runs 90% of the programs themselves. Supervisors and Rec Team members teach the programs at the Community Center. “We believe it is a very efficient use of time for the
Rec Team and their time spent working and having conversations with community members is where many of our program ideas and changes to programs comes from. You seldom find Rec Team members in their office. They are interacting with the people in the Center. We rely on the residents and the Community Center users for ideas. Engaging and interacting with each other brings a sense of community and a feeling of home,” O’Brien said. The Recreation Department staff meets with Supervisor Reilich every two weeks for informational meetings. At these meetings updates are given, ideas are exchanged and there is feedback between Supervisor Reilich and the staff members. “The really great thing is the Supervisor allows us to take chances on programs. He loves new ideas and puts his support behind them,” O’Brien said. One example is the Kids Canyon Playground located at the Community Center. It is one of the largest of its kind in the country. The idea was to use artificial turf instead of wood chips on the playground floor. Turf works much better in this playground because of the closeness to the Splash Park, wet feet cause a problem in wood chips. The Recreation Department has weekly staff meetings to talk about Program Development and to discuss the progress of current programs. All program schedules are worked out four to six months in advance. New ideas come from a combination of staff members and suggestions from Community Center users, they really rely on their residents for feedback.

The Senior Center operations are also overseen by the Recreation Department. They serve daily lunches and have classes geared toward the Senior Community. “For many of our senior residents this is like home. They come here daily for socialization and wellness. It is so nice to be here for them,” O’Brien said. There are a couple of programs the Recreation Department would like the residents to know about. The first is “Friends And Fun Social” held on Thursdays from 6-7:30 PM for ages 14 and up. This program is for youth and adults with special needs and is designed to provide an opportunity for participants to be independent and experience recreational and cultural activities while increasing social skills, building self-esteem and having fun. Addison Steven is the Rec Team member who oversees this program. The second program is “Time Out For Women” held on Wednesdays from 9-11AM. This program is designed for women to spend time in a social setting and to learn about different topics through informational programs. This program averages about 100 women each week who listen to great speakers on a variety of topics, have a snack and socialize with other women. The program is overseen by Rec Team staff member Robin James. The Parks Department consists of five full time staff members who are all new team members within the last two years. “They are a team that really cares about our parks,” O’Brien said. To be on the Parks Department staff you need to be a jack of all trades. The Parks staff is responsible for repairs to shelters, lodges, benches and bleachers and all of the 14 playgrounds. This year they have renovated three bath- Brycen Paddon playing with a basketball at Open Play. rooms and the entire Adeline Lodge. They do siding work, lawn mowing, upkeep of the athletic fields, and trail clearing. They are responsible for everything that needs to be maintained in the over 300 acres of parks in Greece. On the grounds of the Greece Town Hall Campus they built the pickleball and bocce courts and the outdoor fitness equipment located on the “Wellness Way” path. “Our community will see their parks really shine this year. We are excited. You can expect the very best out of the parks, playgrounds and a everything that the Town offers through their Parks and Recreation Department. People come to see us because they want to relax and feel better about themselves. They feel healthier and happier and that’s our goal to make people feel happy. It is a ton of work with a ton of responsibility, the result is great rewards continued on page 26

Time Out For Women Group
How to maintain a healthy weight during menopause by Tami Mungenast CPT CNWC As women approach perimenopause and menopause many find that excess pounds seem to go on easy and are much harder to lose. Weight gain during this time of life is extremely common. Nearly 80% of women report weight gain. The reason weight management becomes more challenging as a women is going through menopause can be for several reasons including: •Hormone fluctuations. Estrogen levels can become like a roller coaster by going high and dropping low causing an increase of fat storage. •Loss of muscle mass. Muscle atrophy can be caused by age, hormonal changes and decreased physical activity. •Sleep interferences. Often women have difficulty sleeping or staying asleep during menopause. Poor sleep is linked to increase in body fat.
•Increased insulin resistance. Women often become insulin resistant as they age which makes losing weight more difficult. A diet heavy with processed foods and sugar can cause insulin resistance which means your body will quickly convert calories into fat. Here are some helpful tips to help you improve your lifestyle and limit weight gain during the peri/menopausal stage of life: •Evaluate your diet. Even if you were eating healthy up to now, you still may need to adjust your diet to help prevent unwanted weight gain. Very low calorie diets are not helpful long term. Research shows that restricting calories to very low levels actually causes a loss in muscle mass and damage to your metabolism. Even if you lose weight up front it will be very difficult to keep it off with the lower metabolic rate. A low calorie intake can also increase continued on page 27
How to maintain a healthy weight during menopause continued from page 26
your risk of osteoporosis. Eating in a way with controlled portions, increased proteins and reducing processed carbs can help you manage your weight while preserving your metabolic rate. Reigning in your carbs is super critical at this phase as your insulin response system can become less effective (insulin resistance). •Exercise. A mix of strength training (weights) and cardiovascular training are more important than ever during menopause. Exercise can improve mood, increase energy, protect your muscles and bones and promote a healthy weight. Weight training will increase your lean muscle mass which typically declines during aging hormonal changes. Cardio training can help reduce abdominal fat and improve your cardiovascular system.
GreeceNewsNY.com April 2018 27 •Rest and Stress Relief. It is critical to get adequate sleep to help maintain a healthy weight. People who are sleep deprived have higher levels of the hunger hormone (ghrelin) and lower levels of the fullness hormone (leptin). Having these hormones out of balance increases the risk for over eating and weight gain. Women can have issues with sleeping if they are experiencing hot flashes. Reducing caffeine, using melatonin or natural oils like lavender can help improve sleep. Stress relief is also important. Increased stress and decreased sleep can increase cortisol levels which are linked to increased abdominal fat. Yoga and meditation can help with relaxation. Losing weight might be hard during this time but maintaining a healthy lifestyle is most important. Try focusing on health not the number on the scale. Incorporate a healthy diet, regular exercise and time for rest and relaxation to look and feel your best during menopause and beyond.
Arbor Day Foundation Names Town of Greece Tree City USA The Town of Greece was recently contacted by the President of the Arbor Day Foundation congratulating them on earning recognition as a 2017 Tree City USA. The Town achieved this recognition through their commitment to effective urban management and by meeting the programs four requirements: a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita, and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation. “I am proud to live in a town that participates in sustainability through the planting and caring of trees. The Town’s dedication to effective urban forest management is helping to provide our community with better air quality, water resources, energy use, and many other benefits. Thank you to all who help us in being a community committed to keeping our environment healthy,” Supervisor Bill Reilich said. The Arbor Day Foundation is a
million member nonprofit conservation and education organization with the mission to inspire people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees. The Tree City USA Program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. providers, inpatient facilities, local hospitals and recovery groups to help foster the individual onto the path of recovery. “Strike while the iron is hot is critical, otherwise if we don’t get them into help ASAP they are likely to change their mind on getting help,” Lt. Delyser said. In addition to providing resources to the person with the addiction disorder, the Command Post can also help connect families to support services. According to Sheriff Todd Baxter, “The Monroe County Heroin Task Force and Opioid Command Post are committed to responding from every angle within the critical first 24-36 hours of an opioid incident. We can’t afford not to. Lives depend on it.” The county also recently launched a new tab on their website for the Heroin Task Force which has a map showing the numbers and locations of overdoses in Monroe County for the year and month. According to Lt. Delyser the statistics are more readily available than ever before thanks to a form all agencies use for overdoses. The data is captured and reviewed by MCAT and can now be seen on the new site maps. For more information visit https:// www2.monroecounty.gov/sheriff-heroin-task-force

Emergency Information Signs at Greece Town Parks Town of Greece is creating signs for Greece Town Parks that will provide relevant contact and location information in the event of an emergency. The first sign has already been installed at Badgerow Park South. It features the Town of Greece seal and reads “In The Event Of An Emergency Call 911 – Your Location Is Badgerow Park South 1120 Latta Road”. The Town of Greece Department of Parks and Recreation, along with the Department of Public Works, are working on creating and installing similar signs for all Greece Town Parks. “After hearing such positive feedback from our recent installation of Internet Purchase Exchange Location signs, I wanted to explore additional ways to help keep our residents safe and informed. At the suggestion of a resident I began working with our Department of Parks and Recreation and the Department of Public Works to create and install emergency information signs in all Greece Town Parks. These signs will provide emergency contact and location information in the event that a resident needs to contact authorities while at that location. I am always interested in suggestions and feedback from Greece Town Residents, and I believe that these signs will help to keep our residents educated and safe,” Supervisor Reilich said. Happy Easter!
said, “This is not a typical fundraiser like a gala or golf tournament. We specifically chose rappelling because it so closely ties in with Scouting. It’s not about the rappel itself, but more about the challenge it presents by stepping outside your comfort zone. It’s the same with our Scouts. We encourage them to challenge themselves to achieve things they didn’t think they were capable of doing.” This unique event has become a common site every May in Downtown Rochester when dozens of individuals would rappel the First Federal Plaza building to support the Boy Scouts. Moving the event to the Kodak Tower gives past rappelers and would-be rappellers this year an exciting new challenge of doing something never before done at the Kodak Tower. In reference to the building change, Hoitt added, “The past eight years iGordon Corporation and First Federal Building hosted the event, and we are extremely grateful for their support. We’re thrilled to partner this year with Kodak and RG&E/Avangrid for our ninth year. This year we looked to add to the momentum by offering people the opportunity to rappel another iconic Rochester skyscraper, and what’s more iconic than the Kodak Tower. Kodak and the local Boy Scout Council have a long history that goes back decades as Kodak sponsored Boy Scout Troops and Exploring Posts for young men and women.” “I’m honored to be serving as this year’s chairperson for the event,” said Dave Bullwinkle, Chief Financial Officer, Kodak and 21 Stories for Scouts Event Chairperson. He added, “Kodak has a rich history of supporting our community and this event provides a unique opportunity for furthering the development of youth in the Rochester and surrounding areas.” Scouting provides opportunities for personal growth, character development and leadership training for nearly 11,000 youth in 420 Scouting programs across Monroe, Ontario, Seneca, Wayne, and Yates Counties including, urban Scouting programs, serving nearly 1,250 youth in the City of Rochester including 34 after school programs. Proceeds from the event support the council’s ability to keep Scouting available and affordable to all families regardless of economic or social background. “We are pleased to support inspiring initiatives like 21 Stories for Scouts which offer a number of vital programs to young people across the Greater Rochester area,” said Frank Reynolds, Vice President of Gas Integration & Asset Management Planning, RG&E/AVANGRID “It is through partnerships like this one that the Avangrid Foundation and RG&E are able to strengthen and enhance the quality of life in the communities we serve.” Seneca Waterways Council was one of the first Boy Scout Councils in the country to host an extreme rappelling event with Over The Edge, a Canadian company that organizes extreme rappelling events throughout North America. Currently, only three Boy Scout Councils offer this experience, with Seneca Waterways Council’s event being the longest running, at nine years. Provided information
