Jerry J. Helfer Youth Engagement Scholarship Winners On June 21, 2016 Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich, the Greece Youth Board and Greece Town Board announced the recipients of the Jerry J. Helfer Youth Engagement Scholarship. This year’s winners are Madalyn Bowen from Greece Olympia and runner-up Evan O’Hara from Greece Athena. The Jerry J. Helfer Youth Engagement Scholarship provides the Greece community with the opportunity to recognize a student that regularly upholds exemplary moral values, devotes time and energy into helping serve the Greece community, and consistently displays outstanding leadership skills. This scholarship has been established by the Town of Greece to highlight Jerry’s exceptional character, virtue and his lifelong love of learning and public service. With over 25 years of public service, Jerry served on the Greece Youth Board, was elected as Town Councilman for 10 years and served as Deputy Supervisor until his untimely passing in July of 2014. “Jerry was an upstanding citizen, co-worker and friend
and the love he had for his community and public service are the foundations of this scholarship” said Supervisor Reilich. “This year we had a total of 30 applicants from all throughout the Greece community. Through careful consideration by the Greece Youth Board and the Helfer Family, this year’s winners both provided excellent examples of leadership, public service and volunteerism. I was proud to part take in last nights’ ceremony and congratulate both Madalyn and Evan for their great leadership and volunteerism and to help continue on the legacy of Jerry Helfer.” This year’s winner, Madalyn Bowen, is a senior at Greece Olympia High School. Canine Central, a new dog grooming and training salon, opened March 4, 2015, in Greece, and business has been booming ever since. Many have found the salon through ads in GreeceNewsNY, word of mouth, and visiting the various businesses in the Carriage Stop Plaza, where Canine Central is located. “I’m extremely appreciative of all the great clients who have come to my salon, who continue to patronize my business, and who have also referred others to me,” says owner MaryAnn Aquilino. “Opening a business can be pretty stressful and scary, but it’s been wonderful and I have the best clients in the world!” The salon has been consistently booked out for several weeks since shortly after opening, and Aquilino is considering adding a bather and possibly another groomer to meet the demand. “My clients and I, and the dogs, like the calm, quiet atmosphere, so I’m hoping to keep it this way even with adding an employee or two,” says Aquilino. Canine Central offers something a little different: a salon for dogs with a professional look and atmosphere, grooming is right up front and visible, clients – both 2 legged and 4, are always treated well - and safety is always the #1 priority. Canine Central strives to provide the best, safest, and least harmful environment and products for clients by using natural products, which don’t contain harsh or synthetic ingredients, as much as is possible, on their grooming clients and in the salon. MaryAnn Aquilino, owner, states “If a product doesn’t list their ingredients, I don’t use it; and I research every product and their ingredients to ensure they’re as safe as is possible.” Aquilino believes your dog should have a safe, comfortable, enjoyable, stress-free experience when they’re being groomed.
She is a Certified Professional Groomer, graduated from the Rochester Institute of Dog Grooming. “I truly love what I do and always treat your pet as though they were my own, with lots of hugs and kisses, gentle handling, great service you and your dog can trust, reasonable prices, and unique bows/flowers and bandanas to finish their look. Your dog will also get a dog toy and/or bag of natural healthy treats; I give these to all new clients, and all of my clients continue to get them for the various holidays throughout the year,” says Aquilino. “My goal is to ensure your pet has a great grooming experience, with a finished result you both will love.” Aquilino also offers some special discounts. “As a sign of my thanks and appreciation for the many sacrifices they make and the hard job they do, Canine Central is pleased to offer a discount to current and former members of the military, police, fire, 1st responders, and SAR”. For those clients who book regularly, there’s a Frequent Client Program. According to Aquilino, “While the end result is a great looking dog groom, dog grooming isn’t a matter of looking good, it’s a matter of your dog’s health, comfort, well-being, and an important part of caring for our dogs. It’s just as an essential part of responsible dog ownership as is providing them good food and water, training, vet checkups, and the appropriate vaccinations. Groomers also have their hands and eyes over every inch of a dog while it’s being groomed, and this gives them the opportunity to see things vets and owners may not.” Aquilino says this helped one of her regular clients. “I noticed the dog was acting differently on the table, jumping around when I touched his legs, which he hadn’t done previously. While examining his legs closer I found a growth on the inside of his upper thigh. I mentioned it to his owner and said they should keep an eye on it and if it

changed to have their vet look at it. When they came in for their next groom, they said it had grown within a couple of weeks, the vet looked at it, and it turned out to be cancer. Luckily, it was contained and was able to be removed; the dog is doing great now.” Each grooming at Canine Central includes your dog’s bath, drying, hairstyle/clip, nails, and ear care. All grooms include whatever products are necessary for a great result - conditioner, de-shed, hypo allergenic, cranberry facial, etc. - at no extra cost. Aquilino table dries all dogs as it’s safer than crate drying, and gives a better finish to the groom, and for dogs who don’t tolerate table drying well, she uses crates which are fully open on all sides with fans. “Heated cage dryers were banned in NY State in 2012” says Aquilino. “And cool air dryers seem too cold to me to have blowing on a wet dog. While most dogs are great for table drying, there are a very few who don’t like it, and I don’t believe in stressing a dog just to get the groom done. Fans blow room temperature air, are safer than heated dryers, and more comfortable for the dogs than dryers blowing
cold air.” Says Aquilino “It’s actually pretty amazing how tolerant most dogs, including puppies, are for grooming, and how many are excited when they come into the salon.” For a small fee, Aquilino also offers a hot oil treatment which moisturizes and restores softness to the coat by sealing and replenishing the hair shaft with natural oils; a coconut oil treatment for dogs who have itchy, flaky, crusty skin, which leaves their skin soft, helps to reduce flaking, and is beneficial for their skin; and a Dead Sea Mineral Treatment that removes impurities, exfoliates the skin and coat, while it deep conditions, rehydrates and rebuilds the coat, and adds shine and gloss. In addition, she offers Puppy’s 1st introductory grooms, mini-grooms that can be done in between full grooms, and bath/nails/ears only grooms. Also offered are walk-in nails – no appointment needed; after 5 walk-in nail grooms, the 6th is free; this applies not only to dogs, but cats and other small animals as well. Aquilino also does Creative Grooming for a small fee, which includes everything from adding bling, beads and feather extensions, to temporary, pet safe color. Canine Central is also one of very few salons that offer Asian Fusion Style grooming, a popular new genre in dog grooming that mixes conventional/traditional grooming with Japanese styling. Canine Central grooms dogs of all sizes and breeds, and also grooms cats. The salon has day, weekend, and evening appointments. Aquilino says, “To book an appointment, please call 585.305.1017, for a grooming that you and your pet will love. Thank you, and I look forward to meeting you and your dog!” MaryAnn Aquilino Canine Central, 506 Long Pond Road, Greece, NY 14612 585-305-1017 • caninecentraldg@aol.com • www.facebook.com/ CanineCentralDogGrooming

HEALTHY LIFESTYLES… Gardening for the Soul They are called Healing and Therapy Gardens. Anyone who has had struggles in life, will completely get this. Let me give you a little background. I was married for twenty-eight years when I lost my first husband. When it came time for him to go into the invaluable service of a hospice home, without realizing it, I came into contact with Healing and Therapy gardening. The hospice that cared for us had a very small area in the back yard that I discovered very quickly was going to be my haven, a place for me to escape, even if it was only momentarily, from the pain and stress. I decided at the time my husband and I started our business that creating a place for people to decompress and deal with the things life can throw at us was essential for wellbeing. Healing and Therapy gardens can include anything from flowers to vegetables. It depends on what each of us feel is peaceful to our soul. There are plants that are specific to creating a space like this, plants that will draw nature in all its beauty. Echinacea or coneflower is one of these plants, they draw not only gorgeous butterflies, but hummingbirds as well. Echinacea comes in a range of absolutely beautiful colors and will come up each year bigger and more beautiful than the year before. There are plants to draw the birds to your paradise. Trumpet Honeysuckle for example will bring purple thrushes, hummingbirds and if you’re lucky enough Baltimore Orioles will stop to eat the flowers during their migration. The sound of water is also a crucial addition to a Healing and Therapy Garden. Bringing water to your garden is not difficult. It can be as simple as a bubbling rock which will fit into even the smallest of spots, to a pondless waterfall or koi pond. Each of these features will bring the birds and creatures to drink. There is nothing quite like watching the birds take a bath and enjoying themselves immensely. My cats and dogs both use our ponds and water features as their personal watering holes! As a community are discovering that nature can in and of itself be very healing. Hospitals, senior centers, hospice homes, funeral homes, just to name a few, have come to the conclusion that creating a place to break from the stress of the moment can be very healing. Senior centers are creating places for their residents that suffer with memory loss and debilitating illness to commune with nature. The peaceful sounds, sometimes the smells of their youth, will bring them a sense of calm. Children can especially benefit from a garden. Seeing the nature that comes to visit them, and the smells of the flowers will forever bring memories of the enjoyment they had as children. I still remember the scent of my mother’s roses, and the fact that I cannot to this day pass a rose bush without stopping to smell, a mini vacation if you will. My grandchildren love the fact that they can stick their toes in my fish pond and the fish will all come to visit and nibble at their toes. They can feed them
from their hands and the joy I get from witnessing this is indescribable. I know I am creating memories and a legacy that they will always have. My very favorite quote is from Sarah Moss-Wolfe, “Nature is My Medicine.” I firmly believe this in my life, nature can be food for the Mind, Body and Soul. Happy Gardening! An Essay by Lynn Frisbee
Investing: A Marathon, Not A Sprint
The Summer Olympics will soon begin in Rio de Janeiro. One especially compelling event is the marathon, a 26.2 mile endurance contest. A marathon can teach us much about life — and it certainly has lessons for investors: For starters, marathoners know they have far to go before their race is done, so they visualize the finish line. And successful investors know that investing is a lifetime endeavor, and that they must picture their end results – such as a comfortable retirement – to keep themselves motivated. Also, marathoners must pace themselves diligently. As an investor, you, too, should rely on pacing. You can’t rush your investments’ performance – instead, follow a long-term strategy that’s appropriate for your needs. Finally, marathoners overcome obstacles. If they fall, they get up and continue running. As an investor, you will also face challenges, such as periods of market instability, but if you keep your focus, and stay invested in all markets – up, down and sideways – you can help yourself move toward your goals. Why the struggle to stay on track with healthy living changes? by Tami Mungenast CPT, CNWC If you find yourself struggling to stay on track with your commitment to eat and live healthier your not alone. Here are some common pitfalls and some ideas to help you be more successful. My life is too busy: Finding time to prepare healthy meals or get to the gym takes time management. It is even harder for families with young children and single parents. With limited time in the day it is hard to resist the temptation of a fast food meal over a healthier home prepared option. Often skipping the workout to do something else might seem like a good idea but this behavior can completely derail your path to your goals. Making the time and staying committed to this time to take care of yourself is as important as making sure your kids get to school and loved ones get to the doctors. Treating it with this kind of importance is the first step and making sure you take the time to take care of your health. Your diet and exercise are the insurance policy to healthier living. Eating Impulsively: Living in this world of constant distractions and stress can cause people to eat whatever is in front of them. In the course of a day anything can happen to derail you from catching a whiff of a smell as your walking by a bakery to eating a gallon of ice cream right from the freezer because of the stressful day you had. The only solution is to have healthy snacks on hand that you can turn to instead of the unhealthy option. An example would be chocolate peanut butter protein balls. A low sugar protein based snack can keep you on track. (Find recipe on www. greecenewsny.com). Having emergency foods on hand to
keep you from worse options is essential. Failing to plan ahead: It is so much easier to manage cravings or stay committed to a healthier way of eating when you plan ahead. The busier you are the more reason you of all people need to prepare your meals in advance. Taking an hour a few times a week to prepare and package your meals makes all the difference in the world. This will ensure that you have a refrigerator full of healthy meal options every day and will keep you away from the fast food. Schedule your workouts a week in advance too. Plan what dates/times you will exercise and keep those as if they are appointments you would keep for your boss. Have a Ziploc baggy of healthy snacks like almonds or pumpkin seeds in your car or in your bag to keep cravings at bay. Social Support: Trying to live a healthier lifestyle when surrounded by people who are negative about your goals can make it so much harder. Not all friends and family are supportive. Sometimes the ones you are closest to can be your biggest saboteurs. If you do not have support at home to continue with these healthier habits use workout groups, weight loss groups, a Trainer or Social Media groups to help surround you with like-minded people who will help support your healthier living. This will help ensure your success. Working in a toxic environment: So many work environments are full of junk food. You will have to swim against the current if you want to hold your ground in not caving to these foods when you are at work. Self-control can only do so much so you really need to distance yourself from continued on page 24

these things as often as you can. Bring your own lunch and snacks and eat outdoors on nice days when the break room is littered in carbs.
Self-loathing: Are you that person who can’t stop eating after the first potato chip? Often people feel guilty for eating something they weren’t planning on eating. They then beat themselves up and decided they might as well finish the entire bag because they are such a failure. Being too hard on your self is natural but stop yourself and pick yourself up. First identify your negative reaction to your slip up and then change it to a different one that is more counterproductive to staying on track. Be aware of this cycle and changing your behavior will help you improve your quality of decisions over time. Every day can be a fresh clean piece of paper for you to rewrite your small successes on. Underestimating the impact of exercise: Regular exercise does more than help you manage your weight. Cardio and weight training can definitely improve your body composition. But the exercise does so much more! Working out helps reduce stress, increase focus, lowers depression and helps you become stronger mentally. Exercise will help with your weight but it does so much more than what the scale shows you. When you combine exercise with good diet consistently the sky is the limit for how great you will feel inside and out. Take time to understand where you struggle the most. By being aware you are now in a good position to make some positive changes. Healthy wishes!

The Greece Rotary Club looking for Host Families
MUSIC, ART AND DRAMA for Kids
What an honor it is to share our culture and community with a young person while learning about life in another country. You can be part of the journey by becoming a host family for the 2016-2017 Greece Rotary Exchange Student from Denmark. She is 16 years old and will be attending Greece Athena High School. The exchange student has studied English for seven years and attended a three week English school in London this past summer. Her teacher describes her has having a good command of reading, writing and speaking English. Her favorite subjects are Math and Physical Education. Two of her favorite sports are handball and skiing. As a Rotary Exchange Student she hopes to be part of another culture and experience other family traditions as well as establish lifelong friendships with her host families and students from her American school. The Rotary Exchange Program is unique in that it provides tremendous support to both the student and their host families. To give our exchange students the broadest exposure to American culture, we try to arrange for three different host family experiences. Each family will host for three to four months. If you are interested in this life-changing opportunity and live in the Greece Central School District, please email exchange@ greecerotary.org for more information or call Greece Rotary’s Youth Exchange Officer Larry Evarts at 585-746-4230.

15 Percent Cost Savings on Flood Insurance Policies for Greece Residents The state of New York has 1,500 communities that participate in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), but only 32 (2%) currently participate in the Community Rating System (CRS) and none rank better than Class 7. Supervisor Bill Reilich is pleased to announce that the Town of Greece is the only local municipality in Monroe County that participates in the National Flood Insurance Community Rating System Program and has received a reduction in our Class rating from 8 to 7 providing additional savings for taxpayers. CRS is a voluntary incentive program managed by the Insurance industry and recognized by FEMA that highlights communities that enforce floodplain management activities that exceed the minimum National Flood Insurance Program requirements. Our participation as a Class 7 CRS Community will provide Greece residents within the FEMA Special Flood Hazard Area with a fifteen percent discount on their flood insurance policies. Benefits also include improved public safety, property loss reduction, open space and natural resource protection, and better post-disaster recovery. “Since first taking office, saving taxpayer dollars has been my top priority. Today, I am pleased to announce that through the efforts of our Public Works and Development Services Departments our Town has received full approval from the NFIP for a class reduction from 8 to 7 resulting in the savings of fifteen percent for all Greece residents who currently have flood insurance. We are the only municipality within Monroe County to receive this class reduction and the first town across the state to have a Class 7 rating. This news comes at a time when the cost of flood insurance has increased dramatically across the nation and has become a burden for many communities that are situated in a flood plain.” said Supervisor Reilich. The Town of Greece’s level of participation currently provides policy holders within the FEMA Special Flood Hazard Area (FEMA Mapped 100-year Floodplain) with a ten percent discount. While ten percent is the standard, our new fifteen percent reductions will provide cost savings for residents with flood insurance policies. This reduction may become more significant as flood insurance rates continue to increase due to recent laws aimed at making the program self-funding and the elimination of subsidies. What are our customers saying...
Where do I start, where to start... well let me start of by sayin’; AWESOME PLACE !!! Just moved into the area, was hungry one evening, yelped for a bar, and found this place... walked in on a Friday and been to this place 7 days (evenings) in a row now!!! Fri - had wings and a basket of shrimp, great and tasty! Sat - had wings and salad with steak... awesome salad. Sun - crock of clam chowder soup and salad. Mon - was a crazy BUSY BUSY evening, this is their wings night, this place was packed to the door !!!!!!! Anyway, I came in because the place is fun, has great locals coming in, service is great from owners and their staff... a very cool place... prices on beers, shots, and pitchers are very good. Service is fast, food is good, atmosphere is great... A.S. I’m a fan! It seems every time we go there and pony up to the bar, the owner is our bartender. We get good service, the food is solid, the drinks are both strong and affordable...We are quickly becoming regulars. Highly recommend. C.F. Love this place - great food, great personnel who care and pay attention to their customers. On a busy Thursday night (football) the staff was on point, attentive and paid attention to customers needs. I cannot say enough good things about owner Eric and his entire staff!! R.G.
