Changes at the Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf – Neighbors Helping Neighbors Since 1977, the Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf (GEFS) has delivered pre-packed boxes of food to those in need who live in Greece and Charlotte. Requests have grown from a few families per month to more than 5,500 people last year, and the need continues to grow. While the community has responded with donations that allow GEFS to keep up with demand, the Board wanted to ensure that they could continue to provide food as long as there are residents in need of food. After studying the practices of other food pantries, the GEFS Board decided to operate as a hybrid Client Choice food pantry starting July 10, 2018. Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf Chairperson Amy Peritsky said, “We started talking about how we could increase our ability to serve more in the community and do it in the most efficient way. We started studying other food shelfs and looked at what works for them and we are now making major changes to our food pantry.” All clients will now speak with a verifier before receiving food. Those with transportation will be invited to go to the Food Shelf to select food for their families, food will continue to be delivered to those who are ill or unable to go to the Food Shelf. There are many benefits to making the change. It is good for clients. Those in financial need may have little choice in many areas of their lives, but they know what their families can/will eat and should have the opportunity to make those choices. It will reduce food waste. There can

be considerable waste if families receive food that will not be eaten because of food allergies or personal, cultural, or religious preferences. It will help GEFS stretch food dollars. Instead of purchasing perishable food from grocery stores prior to every delivery, fresh and frozen items can obtained from Foodlink at a much lower cost. It will also reduce the cost of cardboard boxes that are used for packaging the pre-packed units. It is also good for volunteers. A number of drivers can no longer lift boxes or don’t feel confident driving in poor weather but are able to work at the Food Shelf. It provides opportunities for volunteers to work directly with clients and with each other. Anyone interested in volunteering or in holding a food drive may email gefoodshelf@gmail.com. Residents of Greece or Charlotte in need of food may leave a message on the hotline (585-277-5370) which is available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Calls are returned Monday through Friday, 9 am to 3 pm. All services are free and confidential. Provided Information

Arc of Monroe New Residence in Greece continued from page 11
abilities. A generous, anonymous community member donated a portion of funds to purchase and renovate an existing house. The Arc Foundation of Monroe raised the remaining funds needed. The intention of the donation was to create a better residential experience for five people with disabilities. The new house provides five gentlemen with 2,400 sq. ft. of space all on one level with complete accessibility so they can age in place. The home includes five bedrooms and three separate living areas. The world’s population, including people with developmental disabilities, is living longer than ever and with an increased life expectancy comes increased challenges in addressing age-related issues, including housing. The Arc of Monroe currently makes 204 beds available within residential services of which 69% of the residents are over the age of 50, and 33% of the residents are between the ages of 60 to 69.
The number of adults in New York State with intellectual and developmental disabilities aged 60 and older is projected to nearly double from 641,860 in 2000 to 1.2 million by 2030. An increase in aging people with disabilities presents the need for more housing that can be staffed appropriately. The Arc of Monroe is actively in search of more affordable and accessible housing options in Rochester and surrounding areas for people with disabilities. This new house is one more victory for this segment of our community, and The Arc of Monroe is pleased to be able to provide this opportunity to these five men. The Arc of Monroe is affiliated with the Collaborative of the Arc of New York, a regional association of 16 non-forprofit Arc US, Inc. human services agencies across upstate New York serving more than 9,000 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. They support people with intellectual or developmental disabilities, as well as a wide variety of other disabilities, and have been providing a variety of programs and services for over 1,700 people with I/DD and their families in the Rochester community for over 60 years. Flag Day Dedication Ceremony
Greece American Legion Post #468 Commander George Dadson, Jr., the Color Guard, and other members of Legion Post #468 joined Supervisor Bill Reilich and Greece Town Officials for a special Flag Day Dedication Ceremony. The ceremony was held on June 14, 2018 at Veteran’s Memorial Park (formally Badgerow Park North), which was renamed earlier this year in honor of the great military men and women who serve our country. Legion Post #468 Commander George Dadson, Jr. was presented with a plaque which commemorated the 2018 Flag Day Dedication Ceremony. The Color Guard was presented with the American Flag and ceremoniously raised the flag up the flag pole at the park. A plaque was placed at the base of the flag pole, it reads: Dedicated To Our Great Veterans. Veteran’s Memorial Park connects to Badgerow Park South on Latta Road by an extensive trail system. The 33 acre park contains tennis and basketball courts, a softball field, a multi-purpose field, a toddler playground, and an open shelter for parties. The numerous amenities make this a widely-used park in the Town of Greece. Veteran’s Memorial Park is located at 4614 Dewey Avenue, Greece. Provided Information and Photos

From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich Summer is in full swing here at Greece Town Hall. We just held our biggest event of the year: The Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration! This is the fifth year we’ve held this beloved event, and as in years past, we saw thousands of attendees flock to the Town Hall Campus for the day’s festivities. Kicking off the day was our 5K Freedom Run and Super Hero Sprint for kids. I would like to thank all who braved the heat to participate in these friendly competitions. Evening festivities picked up around 4:00pm with family-friendly and children’s activities and food provided from some of our favorite local food truck vendors. During the live concerts of the evening, attendees were treated to a wonderful performance by Rochester native Josie Waverly. Following Josie Waverly was the popular band Orleans. Orleans actually performed the first year we held the 4th of July Celebration and they were so popular, we wanted to bring them back. The huge celebration ended with a bang – literally! The
GreeceNewsNY.com August 2018 17 Town of Greece is proud to have one of the best firework displays in Monroe County, and this year did not disappoint. I would like to thank everyone who came out to enjoy Independence Day in the Town of Greece! Flag Day, recognized across America every year on June 14th, was extra special this year in the Town of Greece as Greece Legion Post #468 joined us for a dedication ceremony at Veteran’s Memorial Park. As people across the United States commemorated the flag’s adoption, we were honored to raise and dedicate the flag at Veteran’s Memorial Park to the brave men and women of our military. A plaque was placed at the base of the flag pole, which reads: Dedicated To Our Great Veterans. Make sure to check out our next summer concert featuring Beatle Magic on Sunday, August 12th. All concerts are free to the public and take place at the Pavilion at Town Hall from 2:00pm – 4:00pm. In addition to our summer concert series, we also feature movies for families at our Town Pavilion. All movies are free to the public. The next showing will take place Friday, July 27th at 7:00pm and will feature “Coco.” For more information, please call our Community and Senior Center at 723-2425. I hope that you will take advantage of all of our upcoming programs! If I can be of assistance to you in any other Town-related matter, please do not hesitate to contact our office or visit our website.

Ch-Ch-Ch-Chia! ~ Chia Seeds the Ancient Superfood by Tami Raco CPT, CNWC
Little did we know that the popular sprouting grass petplants from the 1980s would later be recognized as a superfood! Chia seeds are an edible seed from a desert plant which is a close member of the mint family. Since 3500 BC, chia seeds have been a main component of the Aztec and Mayan diet and a survival food to Aztec warriors. Some say that one tablespoon of Chia seeds were believed to sustain an individual for 24 hours. Chia seeds are deemed a modern day superfood due to their richness in fiber, healthy fats, protein, important minerals like calcium, zinc and potassium, vitamins like A, B, E, and D and an array of antioxidants. One ounce of chia seeds contains 137 calories, 12 grams of carbs of which nearly all of them are fiber (non-impact carbs), 8.6 grams of healthy fats (Omega 3) and 4.4 grams of protein. The amazing nutritional profile of these tiny seeds can aid in digestion, slow insulin release, help control diabetes, improve heart health, increase energy and help build
stronger bones and muscle tissue. Chia seeds have a nutlike flavor and can easily be mixed into foods and drinks. They can be used whole, ground or soaked in water. Unlike flax seed chia seeds can be eaten whole. Simply add them to cereal, oatmeal, yogurt, protein shakes, rice dishes or on a salad. Chia seeds can be ground in a coffee grinder and added to flour for baked goods and pastas. Be sure to store ground chia in sealed containers in the refrigerator to retain its health properties. Chia seeds soaked in water can hold up to 12x their weight. They are excellent to help prevent dehydration. They can also absorb water in digestion so be sure to drink with plenty of water. To soak chia seeds mix them with water in a 1:10 ratio, 1½ tbsp. to one cup of water. Let them soak for 1-2 hours and then mix into a smoothie or a drink. You can mix seeds in water and add lime or lemon juice and sweetener to make a drink known in Mexico and Central America as “Chia Fresca.” Chia seeds are versatile, easy to use and pack a wallop of nutritional punch. Improve your healthy by adding up to 2 tbsp of chia seeds to your diet a day. Check our website www.greecenewsny.com for easy chia seed recipes.

Lake Guardian to Monitor Lake Ontario’s Health EPA Launches Research Vessel Lake Guardian to Monitor Lake Ontario’s Health as Binational Science Initiative Gets Underway The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has begun an extensive binational Cooperative Science Monitoring Initiative to focus on the protection and restoration of Lake Ontario and its watershed. U.S. and Canadian federal agencies are partnering with New York State and the Province of Ontario, as well as academic, environmental, and ecological organizations, to gather critical information about the chemical and biological conditions of Lake Ontario. “We are fully dedicated to ensuring the health of Lake Ontario and all of the Great Lakes so we can better protect, maintain, and enhance environmentally sustainable economic opportunities,” said Regional Administrator Pete Lopez. “This cooperative partnership at all levels of government will benefit the health of the lake and the local communities and economies that rely on it.” The priority of this year’s monitoring of Lake Ontario, which is the lake’s fourth cycle of intensive monitoring, is to improve the understanding of nutrients entering the Lake Ontario ecosystem and their impacts on water quality and the aquatic food web. The Research Vessel Lake Guardian is the largest research
The Rosette is a workhorse for programs like the Water Quality Survey. This scientific equipment collects water samples at selected depths using twelve bottles. Attached directly below the Rosette is the Sea-Bird instrument with sensors that instantly measure temperature, depth, dissolved oxygen and more. The Rosette and Sea-Bird are part of a larger collection of scientific equipment on board the Lake Guardian that is used to collect samples.

vessel in the EPA fleet and the largest research vessel operating on the Great Lakes. The R/V Lake Guardian is 180 feet in length. It has a berthing capacity of 41 people, including 14 crew members and 27 visiting scientists. Under the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, the United States and Canada are committed to improving the waters of the Great Lakes and issuing a Lakewide Action and Management Plan (LAMP) for each Great Lake on a five-year cycle. This is Lake Ontario’s fourth year monitoring and will identify environmental threats, set priorities for research and monitoring, and outline further action by governments and the public for its 2018-2022 LAMP. Once the year-long monitoring program on Lake Ontario is completed, a summary report of their findings will be available for public review. Using various research vessels, the agencies will be evaluating nutrients, plankton, prey fish, and predator fish. Smaller research boats will focus on near-shore activities such as evaluating nutrients and mussels, as well as performing algae research and diver surveys. The agencies will be using sophisticated equipment such as underwater cameras, satellite imagery, robotic gliders, and underwater unmanned vehicles to better characterize and document the lake’s ecosystem. The R/V Lake Guardian, which is owned by the EPA Great Lakes National Program Office (GLNPO), assists GLNPO in monitoring and reporting on the status and trends of the Great Lakes ecosystem. Annual surveys that sample water and biological life at designated locations in all five Great Lakes (Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario) are conducted by the R/V Lake Guardian.
