Harter and Callaghan Greece Wrestling Weapons
GreeceNewsNY.com December 2016 7 20 Ho Jack Park rocHester, NY 14612
(585) 342-1220
by Tami Raco
The Greece Storm wrestling team has many successful and talented wrestlers. Among the successes are two powerhouse wrestlers with stand out wrestling careers. Justin Harter is a junior at Greece Athena. During his sophomore year he had already achieved 120 wins in Varsity Wrestling. Justin began wrestling at the age of 7 and at the age of 9 he was working with Ilias Diakomihalis. His talent was obvious at a young age. At 12 years old the Varsity Coach of Greece Storm, John Bonaldi, recognized his abilities. After the Varsity and Section 5 qualifying process Justin was brought up to the Varsity level in 7th grade. Justin has won multiple Section V tournaments, 2015/2016 Teike-Bernabi Champion, and team MVP 2015/2016. Justin has over 400 career wins. One his proudest moments was making it to the States in his sophomore year. Justin credits his biggest influences as his Dad, John, Joe Bonaldi and his trainer Fritz Zagorski. Dillon Callaghan is a sophomore at Greece Odyssey and he has been wrestling since he was 8 years old. Dillon was also recognized for his talent by former Varsity Coach John Bonaldi. Bonaldi pulled Dillon up to the Varsity team when he was in 8th grade. Dillon anticipates reaching his 100 varsity wins in this current wrestling season. He is a two time NYWAY State Champion, has placed in multiple national tournaments, and has over 300 career wins. Dillon credits both his Mom and Dad as being his biggest influences. Justin is wrestling Varsity at 170 lbs. and Dillon is wrestling at 120 lbs. Both boys are looking forward to a successful wrestling season which is underway with the Greece Storm. Latta Long Liquor by Barbara Burke Latta Long Liquor is located at 3177 Latta Road, in the Wegmans Plaza, Greece. The newly remodeled store offers a full and expanding line of wines and spirits, domestic and imported. They have over 150 different New York State Wines in stock. For Holiday giving, they have a nice selection of Gift Sets available. Customer Service is the key to the success of Latta Long Liquor. The current seven member staff has over 100 years combined experience in the retail Wine and Spirit Industry. Store manager Tom Weinstein has managed this store since it opened in 1989. “I really like the job because it is different everyday. I enjoy the regular customers, talking to, and helping all the customers with selection, hearing how they like the products and which ones are favorites,” Tom says. Another way Latta Long Liquor obtains customer feedback and keeps up with the latest products in the industry is by hosting Wine and Spirit Tastings. Tastings are held every Friday 4-7PM and Saturday from 2-5PM at Latta Long Liquor. For each Tasting there is a professional representative to introduce new products, provide samples of current products and to get customer feedback about the products tasted. The atmosphere is very casual. Customers are helped with their selections, questions are answered, and everyone learns about the products.
With their convenient location, (next to Wegmans), ample parking, knowledgeable staff, extensive inventory and ever expanding product offerings, Latta Long Liquor makes wine and spirit purchasing a pleasant experience. They will also fill special order requests. Latta Long Liquor features something for everyone. Store hours are Monday thru Thursday 9AM-9PM; Friday and Saturday 8AM-9PM; Sunday Noon-7PM. Call 585-227-WINE (9463) for more information.

From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich November has always been a time to look back and reflect on what we are thankful for. With the holidays just around the corner, I would like to wish everyone a very safe and happy Thanksgiving. As the snow begins to make its way to the area, I would like to remind residents about our Winter Parking Ordinance. There will be no parking allowed on any town roads or grass rights-of-way from November 1st until April 15th between midnight and 8:00 AM. This allows for safer and more effective plowing and salting of dedicated town streets and helps keep the cost of snow removal down, saving tax dollars for residents. In the event a mailbox and/or post is damaged or displaced as a result of Town of Greece operations, the Town will replace the damaged mailbox and/or post with a standard metal mailbox and wooden post at no cost to the resident. In an attempt to streamline
the mailbox replacement process when reporting a damaged mailbox, please provide approximate date and time when the damage occurred so that we can verify on our GPS system. Please call the Department of Public Works at 2254590 to report any damage sustained due to winter plowing operations. If the resident rejects the mailbox offered, the Town of Greece will reimburse the resident up to $35 upon submission of original receipt as proof of purchase. On a final note, make sure to mark your calendars for our Town’s Annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony and Family Christmas Party, Thursday, December 8th. We will be lighting the Christmas Tree at 6:00pm in the Atrium at Greece Town Hall followed by a Family Christmas party in the Community and Senior Center. The party will be complete with games, snacks, crafts, music and more. This event is open to the public. I look forward to seeing everyone there! As always, if I can be of assistance to you in any town related matters, please do not hesitate to contact my office directly at 225-2000. Keep on the look-out for additional details regarding town sponsored events and news on my Facebook page.

How Should You Use Retirement Plan Distributions? During your working years, you put money into your IRA and your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. But once you’ve retired, how can you maximize the benefits you get from these plans? First, be aware of the rules governing withdrawals from your retirement accounts. Once you reach 70½, you must start taking “required minimum distributions,” or RMDs, from your traditional IRA and your 401(k). If you have a Roth IRA, you can avoid taking withdrawals for as long as you want. But if you have to take RMDs, what should you do with them? Here’s one suggestion: Put the money into three “buckets” – one for nearterm income, one for medium-term income and one for long-term income. A financial professional can help you choose the appropriate investments for these three buckets. This approach can help you address a key threat to your retirement well being: the possibility of outliving your income. So, when those RMDs start arriving, think about putting out the “buckets” to catch them.

The Art of Arranging Built in 1854, Warner Castle, in Highland Park was designed by owner Horatio Gates Warner, to resemble the ancestral castle of the Clan Douglas which he fell in love with during a visit to Scotland. Warner Castle is home to Rochester Civic Garden Center. The Rochester Civic Garden Center is the Horticultural Education Center for the Genesee Region of New York state. The Rochester Civic Garden Center, a not-for-profit organization, was founded in 1945 and chartered by the New York State Board of Regents in 1950 as a non-profit educational organization. The Rochester Civic Garden Center is open to the public and invites you to take a self-guided tour of the Castle, browse the botanical library, and visit their favorite classroom: the surrounding gardens and nearby Highland Park. Each year over 15,000 visitors enjoy their Garden Tour, symposium, classes, lectures, and other special events. Hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 9:00am – 4:00pm. Admission is free and open to the public. Reservations are requested for groups of 8 or more. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. “Hey, Mom! You’ve got to see this new round house kick we learned today!” Owen was tugging at his coat and trying to show her the kick before he was even through the door.” “Cool! Very impressive!” Lainey complimented, winking at Joe who came through the door right behind Owen. Joe winked back, ducking as Owens’ flying foot went sailing over his head. “Hey! Flea brain! Remember to gauge your distance! You almost nailed Dad in the head!” Gabriel admonished his twin as he followed his father into the kitchen. Owen and Gabriel were growing so fast. Since they had turned twelve last August, they were like April grasses after the spring application of lawn fertilizer. At eleven, they had still looked like boys. Now, at twelve and a half, Lainey could see the men that they would become starting to emerge. Owen was getting tall, lean and muscular, with a faint shadow of soft fuzzy stubble showing on his upper lip. His
curly mop of caramel colored hair framed his face, accentuating his bright green eyes. Gabriel was tall and muscular too, his fuzzy stubble more pronounced than Owen’s. His voice had even started to change already, cracking, especially when he was excited, and sending an embarrassed blush across his cheeks. He was like a younger version of his father, dark and smoldering. Maybe she was prejudiced, but she thought they were both handsome beyond belief. “Master Amos says we’re going to have our brown belt tests in two weeks! We’ve got a new kata to learn and all the old ones to practice up on,” Gabriel announced excitedly as he kicked and punched his way across the kitchen floor and over to the refrigerator. He stuck his sweaty head in the fridge, looking for something to eat and came out with a slice of left over pizza in his hand. “Aw yeah! This is what I want!” He smacked his lips in anticipation. “Pizza! That’s not the only piece is it?” And Owen headed for the fridge too. Lainey grabbed the slice from Gabriel’s grasp before he could even start to unwrap it and headed Owen off at the pass. “Hold it right there, you two. Before you start stuffing your faces or doing anything else, you’ve got to go get cleaned up. You’re gross! Sweaty, stinky messes! Throw continued on page 26

Little Free Library on Long Pond Road The Little Free Library movement began in 2009 when Todd Bol of Wisconsin built and placed a model of a one room schoolhouse on his front yard. He filled the schoolhouse with books to share with his neighborhood. The little schoolhouse library was a tribute to his mother, a teacher who loved to read. Since that one caring outreach the idea has grown by leaps and bounds. In June 2016 the total number of Little Free Libraries worldwide is now 40,000. The mission of Little Free Library is to, “Promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide, and to build a sense of community as we share skills, creativity and wisdom across generations.” Dr. Deborah Fox and staff are excited to be the Stewards for the Little Free Library #45712 on behalf of their neighbors and their community in Greece. Dr. Fox stocked their Little Free Library, with, “A variety of good quality books that were selected to be of interest to our neighbors.” The library is located at 505 Long Pond Road, Greece, 14612. Dr. Fox invites the community to, “Stop by and take whatever catches your fancy. Return and bring books to contribute when you can. Little Free Library books are always a gift – never for sale.” For more information go to www.littlefreelibrary.org. Provided Information and Photo

Greece Historical Society Receives Grants The Greece Historical Society has received two grants totaling $14,000 to conduct a cultural resource survey of existing buildings designed by Rochester architect James H. Johnson. The Preservation League of New York State, in partnership with the New York State Council on the Arts, presented the Greece Historical Society with a $13,000 Preserve New York grant on Monday, October 24, 2016 at the Hochstein Music School Performance Hall. In September, The Landmark Society of Western New York awarded the Greece Historical Society a $1,000 grant to help supplement the Preserve New York grant. The Greece Historical Society will use the entire grant funds to hire Bero Architecture PLLC of Rochester to complete the project. The goal of the survey is a multiple property documentation form which could help lead to State and National listing for Johnson’s buildings. James H. Johnson (1932-2016) was an innovative architect who gave the Rochester and Western New York region some of its most distinct structures, including Rochester’s Liberty Pole, St. John the Evangelist Church in Greece, Temple Sinai in Brighton, and the Mushroom House in Perinton. Mr. Johnson passed away in February. The Greece Historical Society has a special connection to Mr. Johnson in that Greece was fortunate to have two sites designed by him. Mr. Johnson started his local architecture career with projects in Greece. He helped to design the for-
mer Our Lady of Mercy Elementary School on Armstrong Rd. in the late1950s. He later returned to design the Parish Hall/Church (1960) and Rectory (1965; demolished 2013). In 1964, he designed St. John the Evangelist Church on W. Ridge Rd. It was at St. John’s in 2012 that Mr. Johnson gave a presentation on his life’s work for the Greece Historical Society’s monthly lecture series. Preserve New York is a signature grant program of the NYS Council on the Arts (NYSCA) and the Preservation League of New York State, and is made possible with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. “We are delighted to help advance the preservation efforts of these organizations with funding from Preserve New York,” said Erin Tobin, Director of Preservation for the Preservation League. The Landmark Society’s Preservation Grant Fund program offers funds for preliminary design and planning studies to help make positive improvements to at-risk buildings. “The Landmark Society is honored to be able to support such an important project. James Johnson was a visionary architect and his work will leave a lasting legacy on our community. We commend the Greece Historical Society for taking on this project,” said Caitlin Meives, Preservation Planner for The Landmark Society. Work on the project will begin later this month. Interior Expressions by Design is a Retail Home Decor, Apparel and Gift Store located at 1100 Long Pond Road in Greece. Owned and operated for the past five years by Jim and Barb Miller, the Interior Expressions by Design shopping experience is one-of-a-kind. “We focus on customer service,” Barb Miller says, “I search for unique merchandise that is not found other places.” The Millers traveled to several Gift Shows seeking out new merchandise for the upcoming Holiday shopping season. Barb says she is always excited about the Holiday Season and that it is a focus while purchasing for the shop. In addition to new Holiday merchandise, other Gift Show purchases include Fashions, Accessories, Handbags, Scarfs, Gift Items, Home Decor and more. They also have a wonderful selection of candles, prints, rugs, textiles, florals, lighted canvases, signs, pottery and much more. “Everything to make your house a home.” Interior Expressions by Design also carries Hallagan Fine Furniture (Made locally in Newark, New York) available as a custom order in over 300 frames and 700 fabrics, a wide selection of Amish made wood furniture in many styles, colors and finishes, Simply Noelle Clothing and much more. The store is 2,000 square feet of frequently changing merchandise full of inspiration for self, home and gift giving. The Miller’s Greece store began after a short retirement from 21 years at the Apple Tree in Brockport. Barb says, “Retirement didn’t agree with me and I felt I could offer the residents of Greece and beyond an alternative to the big box stores. I plan to continue to extend exceptional customer service, unique merchandise choices and great price points to all my customers.”
Each year, Jim and Barb Miller pledge to donate a portion of the proceeds from sales on Small Business Saturday in November (2016 Small Business Saturday is November 26) to a worthy cause within the Greece Community. This year the recipient is Lily’s League, a fund set up in memory of Lillian Grace Savigny the granddaughter of one of Barb Miller’s customers who was stillborn. Lily’s League is raising money to purchase a Cuddle Cot for Unity Hospital’s August Family Birth Center. A Cuddle Cot is a crib-cooling device used to preserve the body of a stillborn baby in order to give the parents time to say goodbye. Counselors say that having time with the baby is crucial for parents grieving after stillbirths, time used for the family to form an important bond with their baby, and simply just staying close helps families in dealing with their loss. In the past the response and support from the community for the Miller’s fundraising efforts on Small Business Saturday has been astounding. “I am so thankful to all of our customers for supporting our store and our Community. Many of my customers told me they waited until that day to make their purchases, I also have many customers that donate extra money to the fund,” Barb says. Interior Expressions by Design is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 10am to 5:30pm; Thursday 10am to 8pm. Visit www.interiorexpressionsbydesign.com for more information.

I’m a starving bottomless pit of hunger!” “You’re bottomless all right! Now get up those stairs!” “Yes Ma’am Sir!” The twins shouted out in unison, saluting her and laughing like loons before they turned and bounded up the stairs, throwing punches and kicks at each other as they went. “Gotta love em!” Joe chuckled as he hung his coat on the rack. “Dixie called while you were out!” Lainey sounded happy and excited, like she had beans to spill and couldn’t wait to fill Joe in on the news. “Did she! How’s she doing?” “Really well! She said things were great at work. She’s got a snowman contest going at the station right now. And then, by coincidence, they got a foot of snow yesterday! Can you believe that? A foot! Great for the contest but

bad for anything else. Took her sixty five minutes to get to work instead of twenty but the roads are all cleared up now. “And you know what else?” Lainey continued eagerly, “I think she might have a boyfriend! She talked a lot about one of the guys she works with. It was ‘Mike did this and Mike said that’. I asked her if Mike was her boyfriend and she said ‘no’, that he was just a ‘regular friend’. But I don’t know! I think something else is going on there! “But anyway, she sounded good, Joe. Happy and full of life!” Just a touch of somberness crept into Lainey’s joy then. There was a reason her daughter’s happiness was something to celebrate instead of simply being the norm, and she added, “Like our old Dixie.” “That is so good to hear. My little golden nugget deserves to be happy. I still worry about her, you know. After everything that happened with Greg and all…….” Joe was quiet, contemplative for a moment, then he sighed and shook his head, dismissing thoughts he didn’t want to entertain, and a sadness over events he had no power to change. Lainey caught Joe’s eye and shook her own head, a sad, understanding little smile appearing and then disappearing from her lips, heading off a tear that threatened to form in continued on page 27

the corner of her eye. “You’ll never guess who I ran into at the grocery store this morning,” Lainey said, changing the subject, “Brenda Akerman!” “Brenda! I was just thinking about her and Clay the other day and all the good times we used to have together. What’s going on with them?” “Nothing good. They’re separated, going to get a divorce! Bren was almost in tears.” “So they’re really going to do it, huh? Well, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. All they did was argue with each other and put each other down anyway.” “Kind of like us, huh?” Lainey teased. Joe grabbed Lainey from behind and folded her into his arms at that statement, leaning around and kissing her playfully, almost making her drop the packages of ham and cheese slices she had just pulled out of the fridge for the twins’ lunch. “Come on Lainey, we don’t argue that much! You know I love you. And when we do argue, we always make up. Arguing’s just a ploy, you know. For the makeup sex!” He grinned and kissed her again, his fingers inching mischievously down her stomach towards what lay below. Lainey slapped his hand and wriggled out of his grasp, but she was smiling, a flirty, coy smile, and her eyes were shining. ‘Later’ her smile and her eyes promised. ‘Later’. *** Brenda and Clay Akerman. Their dog walk friends! Lainey and Joe had met them years ago, when they used to walk Astrid around the neighborhood every day, pushing the twins in the stroller with little Dixie skipping ahead of them. Astrid’s fluffy tail would be waving like a flag over her back, her four white doggie paws prancing merrily along. And when they came to the white ranch on the corner of Burlwood and Dragonfly Lane, there would be the Akermans - Brenda puttering about in the garden or getting ready to go out for a bike ride, and Clay mowing the lawn, practicing his golf swing or flipping hamburgers or steaks on the grill, the mouthwatering aroma wafting in the breeze, making their stomachs rumble. First it was just a friendly wave, then they’d stop and strike up a bit of conversation, about the dog or the kids or the weather or about how the vegetable garden was doing and the pros and cons of going organic. Before you know it, they were inviting each other over for dinner. They were going out to see a movie or ringing in the New Year and dancing the night away at Godiva Party House’s Year End Bash. And then something changed. Brenda and Clay didn’t seem happy anymore. Their smiles were forced and artificial, stuck on their faces to hide the glares they shot at each other when they thought nobody was looking. Tension lay between them like a swamp of fetid water and sucking mud that they couldn’t seem to wade through. Lainey tried to uncover the reason for their discord. Both she and Joe gently prodded Brenda and Clay and
snuck casually disguised questions into the conversation. They slipped in hints on ways that they themselves handled arguments or misunderstandings. But none of their attempts at amateur marriage counseling had any affect. The Akerman’s relationship continued to deteriorate. One of the last times they had all gotten together had been over a year ago. Lainey would never forget it. They had been at The Burger Emporium, laughing away, when Brenda had made a jab at Clay about something. Maybe it was that his T-shirt was on backwards or a bit of lettuce was stuck in his teeth or that she thought he was laughing too loud, but she had made him feel like a gauche fool. Poof! The smile had vanished from his face like someone had flipped a switch. And there came the tension, settling over the whole group like odorous swamp gasses. Lainey and Joe had tried to bring the joviality back to the evening. They recounted Owen and Gabriel’s’ stunt of the week – filling the egg carton with hard-boiled eggs and then convincing Lainey to make a cake! They revealed Lainey’s recent cooking disaster when she had mistakenly grabbed baking soda instead of cornstarch, creating a cauldron of foaming stench instead of beef stew! They even tried telling dirty jokes. But joviality’s return would not be had. Clay had not smiled, had barely even spoken another word, for the rest of the night. And Brenda had sat there cold and stiff, a feeling almost like hatred emanating off of her and oozing over to Clay. Lainey called Brenda a few times after that with invitations for drinks or dinner but lame excuses were given as to why they couldn’t make it. Return invitations on Brenda’s part were never made. Then Astrid died and Lainey and Joe’s daily walks ended too. The friendly wave and bit of conversation as they passed the white ranch on the corner of Burlwood and Dragonfly became a thing of the past, and their friendship with the Akermans drifted away, just as Brenda and Clay’s relationship with each other left completely the realm of love and togetherness and vanished into nothingness. How could love be lost? How could it disappear entirely from someone’s heart? How could its vacant spot be claimed by indifference or even hate? These were questions Lainey couldn’t answer. In a language she didn’t understand. And never planned to learn. ### All previous Chapters of License are available on www. Tis’ the Season for Holiday Weight Gain by Tami Mungenast CPT CNWC If you are worried about holiday weight gain, it seems many Americans may have cause for concern. Between the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years holidays and festivities many Americans struggle not to pack on extra pounds. The food choices become more abundant and our time to exercise becomes a scarcity. Research has shown the average weight gain this time of year ranges between 3-10 lbs. Several studies, including a study from the New England Journal of Medicine, found that the overweight and formerly overweight are at the people at most risk to gain weight during the holiday season. Almost 40% of these demographics gained weight during the study. Often the weight gain is more than just parties. Social pressures, stress and breaks of routine are also top reasons people gain weight. Here are a few tips to help you avoid falling into the weight gain patterns: •Get moving! Start your day with some exercise. Whether it is a brisk walk, some time on the treadmill or a morning workout, start your day off with a calorie burning activity. Holiday eating is not always the issue. Having a break in your activity and skipping workouts can be as harmful to your weight management. Find time throughout the day for small bursts of exercise. Even 10-15 minutes of exercise can go along way. •Never go to a party hungry. Eat before special events so that you don’t show up hungry. It’s much easier to tame cravings and impulse eating if you are full from a healthy meal. If you let your hunger kick in your ability to stay in control of your food choices will be hindered. •The “One a Day” approach; Allow yourself one holiday type treat per day. Your choice of the holiday treat, your choice of when and where you eat it. Allow yourself something you really enjoy but limit it to one item per day. This way you won’t feel deprived but you also won’t eat excessively. •Watch the liquid calories! Special coffees, alcohol with high sugar mixers and eggnog base drinks can add a lot of calories and carbs quickly. They won’t fill you up and you will find your sugar crash will make you crave even more. Allow real food to fill you up not the beverages. If drinking alcohol try low carb beers, wine spritzers or dry wines. Avoid mixed drinks with high sugar juices or sodas. Make a habit of having one 8oz glass of water after any alcoholic drink. •Socializing doesn’t have to center around eating. Enjoy time with your friends and family throughout the holiday festivities. Remind yourself you can still fully enjoy yourself with out over indulging. Focus on the quality of time you are spending with your loved ones.
Season Greetings!

Holiday Pet Travel Tips
Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the busy Holiday travel season. Traveling with your pet can be a wonderful and bonding experience, it’s a matter of proper planning and preparation. Top tips to ensure your Holiday getaway with your pet is a safe one: 1. No Heads Out the Window Although many pets find that sticking their head out the window is the best part of the road trip, it’s not safe. Your pet can easily be injured by flying debris. This should go without saying, but NEVER travel with a pet in the back of a pickup truck. Some states have laws restricting such transport and it is always dangerous. 2. Frequent Pit Stops Always provide frequent bathroom and exercise breaks. Most travel service areas have designated areas for walking your pet. Be sure to stay in this area particularly when your pet needs a potty break, and of course, bring along a bag to pick up after your pet. When outside your vehicle, make sure that your pet is always on a leash and wearing a collar with a permanent and temporary travel identification tag. 3. Proper Hydration During your pit stops be sure to provide your pet with some fresh water to wet their whistle. Occasionally traveling can upset your pet’s stomach. Take along ice cubes, which are easier on your pet than large amounts of water.
GreeceNewsNY.com December 2016 29 4. Watch the Food Intake It is recommended that you keep feeding to a minimum during travel. Be sure to feed them their regular pet food and resist the temptation to give them some of your fast food burger or fries (that never has a good ending!). 5. Don’t Leave Them Alone Never leave your pet unattended in a parked vehicle. On warm days, the temperature in your vehicle can rise to 120 degrees in minutes, even with the windows slightly open. In addition, an animal left alone in a vehicle is an open invitation to pet thieves. 6. Practice Restraint Be sure that your pet is safely secured in your vehicle. Utilizing a pet safety harness, travel kennel, vehicle pet barrier, or pet car seat are the best ways to keep your pet safe. They not only protect your pet from injury, but they help by keeping them from distracting you as you drive. 7. Safe and Comfortable Whatever method you choose to properly restrain your pet in your vehicle, be sure to make their comfort a priority. Just as it’s important for your “seat” to be comfortable for your long road trip, your pet’s seat should be comfortable too. Typically their favorite blanket or travel bed will do the trick. There are also some safe and very cozy pet car seats available that your pet may find quite comfy. Careful preparation is the key to ensuring that you and your pet have a happy and safe Holiday getaway! Information Provided by www.Tripswithpets.com
