Historical Images Database Created for Residents The Town of Greece announced that a historical images database is now available for resident use. Official Town Historian Keith Suhr has worked tirelessly on the establishment of the online historical data base. The database, which can be viewed by visiting www.greeceimages.org, currently consists of over 500 images of the Town of Greece dating from the 1800s to present day. Since the start-up of this database, Suhr has taken on the challenge and reached out to many resources and organizations throughout the town. Each photo is verified for accuracy and is categorized. Currently, the database of photos includes twenty five different categories of content and highlights the celebrations, landmarks and progress of our town. This new database will allow the photographs to be downloaded, shared on social media and viewed in a variety of sizes and magnification levels. Additional photographs will be added weekly. The timing to take on this project was determined early, and preliminary discussions surrounding the plans for the Town-Wide Bicentennial Celebration are taking place. “The Town of Greece has a very rich history dating all the way back to the eighteen hundreds. The Town was first established by the State Legislature on March 22, 1822. I am sure that our community will find this historical database a wonderful resource for both personal interest and research purposes. Additionally, I would ask residents that are in possession of any historical photographs of our

From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich A season we all know very well here in Western New York is Fall. While the changing of the leaves is great for pictures and other outdoor fall activities, clean up can be laborious. That is why the Town is pleased to offer leaf curb side pickup every fall season. Please visit the Town of Greece website to view the leaf pick-up schedule, which will occur through December 14th. As a side note, leaf bags must be out at the curb the day before your assigned pick up to avoid your house being missed during this collection process. You may also dispose of your leaves at one of the Town’s 4 Leaf drop off locations. The Town has held several ribbon cutting ceremonies this past month. We have welcomed Family First Credit Union, which is their first location on the West side of Monroe County. Malt + Ember is a new restaurant and brewery that recently opened in the Mall at Greece Ridge. The highly anticipated Texas Roadhouse opened this past month. And finally, we celebrated the opening of BeBalanced Hormone and Weight Loss Center. Many fun events have been organized this month. The Greece Public Library held the annual “How To” Festival this past month, which was a 3-hour long event featuring 30 “How To” activities to explore. I would like to encourage you to consider volunteering for the upcoming Winter Special Olympics, which will be hosted in Monroe County in February for 2019. For more information and to register to volunteer, visit the Special Olympics New York Website at http://specialolympics-ny.org/winter-games/. Be sure to mark your calendars for our annual Family Holiday Party on December 6th. Please note the time and location change this year. The event will begin at 5:45 with Christmas Carols. The official tree lighting ceremony will take place at 6:15 at the outdoor pavilion. The Family Christmas Party will begin afterwards and will run until 8:00pm. Please join us for this festive time of holiday performances, Santa, crafts, and treats! As always, I enjoy hearing feedback from residents about programming and other Town-related matters. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office or visit our website. Keep on the look-out for additional details regarding town sponsored events and news on my Facebook page.

The Connection between Emotional Health and Physical Health by Tami Mungenast CPT CNWC
There is a proven link between your emotional health and physical health so it is important to take time to nurture both. To be completely healthy you should not only take care of your body but care for your overall emotional health as well. How does emotional health affect the body? Anxiety and depression have been shown to increase the risk for chronic illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes. Studies found that depression puts people at a 41% higher risk for illness. On the other hand, studies show that people who achieve a level of mental health and perseverance to manage stress are more likely to prevail during illness. The attitude of gratitude can also help improve health makers. Feelings of gratitude have been show to boost immune system function, lower blood pressure and speed the healing process. Recent studies have shown that emotions of love, contentment and gratitude increase the brains production of Oxytocin. Oxytocin is a neuropeptide that helps the body relax and improves oxygenation to tissues to help the body repair. Studies of epigenetics, the study of changes that modifies gene expression rather than alteration of the genetic code itself, have proven that environmental factors can affect our genetic expression and whether you develop certain diseases or not. Emotions can turn on or off this expression of genes and directly impact our overall health and risk to disease. A study by the Institute of Science (5/20/14) showed that the relaxation response through meditative practice has shown to positively affect 2209 genes in our body. How Should You Care for Your Emotional and Physical Well-Being? Now that we realize how much of an impact your emotional health has on your physical well-being, it’s time to work towards improving it. At first it may seem hard to do, but slowing down and simplifying routines can go a long way to strengthening your mental and physical health. • Eat right. A healthy, regular diet is good for the body and mind. Eating healthy helps keep your mood stable and your focus clear. • Get enough sleep. Sleep deprivation is hard on your heart, can increase your weight and definitely cranks up the crankiness meter. • Get back up. Resilience in the face of adversity is a gift that will keep on giving both mentally and physically. We all face adversity but how we manage it is more important that the event itself. • Withdrawal the Negative and Deposit the Positive. Express negative emotion and work through it. But keep filling yourself with positive emotions of what is good and beautiful in your life. Every day actively look for the good in your life and put your focus there. continued on page 21

The New York State Ballet Presents The Nutcracker The New York State Ballet is proud to present its 2018 The Nutcracker, set to Tchaikovsky’s classic score. Performed with a live orchestra under the direction of Music Director, Jared Chase and accompanied by the Lyric Voices, this production opens December 14th at the Kodak Center for the Performing Arts. Follow along as Young Clara falls asleep at her family’s Christmas party under a majestic Christmas tree with her beloved Nutcracker doll by her side. Watch as her doll magically comes alive, battles the Mouse King and his army, and takes her to the Land of Sweets. There she meets the Sugar Plum Fairy and enjoys enchanting dances from around the world. Artistic Director Katherine Johnson is excited for the New York State Ballet’s 6th season showing of The Nutcracker. Along with Ballet Master Robert Royce, who showcases his dancing talents as Herr Drosselmeyer for the second time this year, and Graduate Program Director Alexandra Brydsten, the creative team of the New York State Ballet is eager for the Rochester area and beyond to share in the joy and magic that this holiday classic brings. Incorporating, as always, the full Company of dancers and many students from New York State Ballet’s training academy, the newest addition this year are dancers from NYSB’s Graduate Program. The five dancers in this elite program will be dancing in their first Nutcracker performance with the New York State Ballet this season in various roles. Student from the training academy get to showcase their ever growing talents alongside the Company, some of them in their first ever performances. Performances are Friday, December 14th, 7:00PM, Kodak Center for the Performing Arts; Saturday, December 15th, 2:00PM, Kodak Center for the Performing Arts; Saturday, December 15th, 7:00PM, Kodak Center for the Performing Arts; Sunday, December 16th, 2:00PM, Kodak Center for the Performing Arts. Group pricing is available, and dancer meet and greets
will be held after every show. Tickets for the performance start at $10 and can be purchased through nysb.brownpapertickets.com or by calling 1-800-838-3006. Children’s tickets include entry to a Sugar Plum party at the NYSB training academy studio, including arts and crafts, treats, and dancing. About New York State Ballet New York State Ballet is located in Rochester, New York. Entering its fifth season, the New York State Ballet is dedicated to preserving the classical art form of ballet by creating and performing exceptional productions that bring a refreshed appreciation and awareness of classical ballet to the New York state community and beyond. Brian Gionta, On and Off The Ice by Barbara Burke and Karen Fien
Growing up in Greece, New York, Brian Gionta started playing hockey at a young age. “With three boys in the family my mom was looking for ways to keep us busy during winter. She signed us up for skating lessons. As a result we all played hockey,” Gionta said. He played travel hockey in the area through age 13, and only one year on the hockey team for his high school, Aquinas Institute, his freshman year. He moved on looking for more competition. During his high school years, Gionta practiced in Syracuse and played in Junior Leagues. “School and hockey, it wasn’t easy. I think it was harder on my parents than on me. I come from a middle class working family. Both my parents worked jobs. It was a tough schedule. They really deserve the credit for supporting me and keeping me going,” he said. Brian is the middle son of Sam and Penny Gionta of Greece. The hard work and dedication resulted in a record breaking hockey career including 16 seasons with the NHL. Gionta’s NHL career includes a 2003 Stanely Cup Championship with the New Jersey Devils, Captain on both Montreal Canadians and Buffalo Sabres teams. And a brief time playing for the Boston Bruins. Gionta was selected to play on the 2005 and 2018 Winter Olympics USA Hockey Team, in 2018 as Captain. In 2001, he captained the Boston College hockey team
to an NCAA Championship title, in overtime. It was his senior year, he led the nation with 33 goals that year. He was named 1998 Rookie of the Year, 2001 Player of the Year, and named to All-Star and All-American teams several times. Brian Gionta announced his retirement from playing professional hockey on September 24, 2018. Being chosen as Captain on so many of the teams he played on shined a light on Gionta’s strength in leadership skills. “I led by example. I was a smaller guy in the league, (Gionta is 5’ 7”). I always worked for what I got. Growing up in a working family, I was taught values by my parents that I brought with me into hockey. It put me in the position to mentor people, and that’s what I did,” he said. Gionta’s advice to young hockey players is, “Dream of being a professional, dream of playing in the league and playing in a championship game, and enjoy playing the game, I always enjoyed it. Have fun, keep playing and you will get better. Whatever level you achieve, wherever you end up, you will have learned valuable life lessons by playing the sport,” Gionta said. Gionta stayed in college for four years and received his degree in Communications from Boston College. “I really felt it was important to plan. You never know, one injury continued on page 19

and you are done. I used my smaller size to an advantage. Skating has always been my strong suit. I was able to get quickly in and out of the bigger guys. I developed my quickness for survival, I didn’t want to get hurt,” he said. Going to the Olympics was very memorable for Gionta. His first Olympic Games were in 2005, when NHL players could participate while playing in the League. The rules changed over the years and when the USA Hockey Committee called and asked him to participate in the 2018 Winter Games, Gionta signed a practice-only contract with his hometown Amerks and was eligible. In January 2018, before he left for the Olympics, the Amerks upgraded Gionta’s contract to a one day and one game contract. He says playing that game was a “pretty cool” experience. The Opening Ceremonies of the Olympic Games are a very special memory for Gionta. His most memorable 2018 Olympic experience was interacting with all the teams. “You get to enjoy it a little more and attend more events. It is a better overall experience. It is your country you are representing and it is a very special honor. My parents and two aunts were in South Korea to support us and watch the team compete. My wife and kids stayed in the US. They watched the games on television. They all had on their USA jerseys. I’m sure when my kids get older they will fully appreciate what an honor playing in the Olympic Games truly is,” he said. falo Sabres was “very cool.” “I really could appreciate the game more. Having my family and friends around and at my games really was important.” Playing for the local team provided the opportunity for family and friends to be at Gionta’s 1,000th game, an achievement only 321 hockey players have reached since the game’s inception in 1917. continued on page 20

Gionta’s 1,000th game came while playing for the Sabres on March 27, 2017 in Buffalo against the Florida Panthers. Gionta’s retirement plans are to enjoy family time, to just be with, and travel with his wife Harvest, son Adam, 13, daughter Leah, 10, and son James, 6. He coaches his sons’ hockey teams and attends his daughter’s soccer events. “Watching my kids compete is awesome, it’s so rewarding to be there and see and experience it with them,” he said. He also has accepted a part time job with the Sabres in player development. He helps with the Amerks in Rochester by supporting the coaches and mentoring the players.
“It helps me stay in shape skating and working out with the team,” Gionta said. Gionta and his wife, Harvest, are active in their communities. They work with several organizations helping kids with special needs and missing and exploited children. They are active with both Buffalo’s Children’s Hospital and Golisano Children’s Hospital in Rochester. Gionta said his proudest hockey career accomplishment was to win the Stanley Cup Championship and to last as long as he did in the sport. “I played in over 1,000 professional hockey games, not many players achieve that,” he said. Successful Transition at Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf Over the past few weeks, the GEFS has been reconfigured to a hybrid Client Choice food pantry through the hard work of many volunteers. Many thanks to Sandy Ericson, Kate LaBarca, Frank and Deb Leskovic, Karen Lockhart, Polly and Bob McCubbin, Jeff Munson, Joe Munson, Lee and Steven Stello, Bob and Amy Peritsky, Eileen Webber, Becky Wren, and Rhonda Breedlove and the crew from Ralph Honda for cleaning, painting, building shelf bases, assembling and moving shelves and equipment, and stocking shelves. Thank you to Joe LaBarca for being our photographer. Every task was important, we couldn’t have done this without everyone’s generous contribution of their time and energy. Special mention goes to Polly and Bob McCubbin for designing the layout, designing and sewing the drapes to separate the warehouse from the shopping area, making aprons for the volunteers, and creating the signage and name tags. The GEFS started welcoming clients on July 10th and were ready. The first clients seemed delighted to be able to select their own food choices. For more information, call 277 5370 to speak to a volunteer. Plans are being made for Thanksgiving Baskets, to volunteer, donate or to have your name on a client list to receive a Thanksgiving dinner call Carol Coons 277 5370. “While we may not think of ourselves as a community with people who are food deficient, the facts prove otherwise.”

• Play and have fun. Strike a balance between work and play. Work pays the bills, but it’s so important to take time out for relaxation, socializing and having fun. Laughter is great for your emotional health. • Exercise. Numerous studies show that exercise improves the overall mood and increases endorphins. When you work out your body releases chemicals called endorphins that interact with receptors in your brain and trigger a positive feeling in the body, reduces stress and the perception of pain, similar to the affect of morphine. Total health depends on a healthy mind and body. Take time to nurture both.

Former Greece Resident Helps Veterans Heal on the Fly by Tami Raco
Rob Burke grew up in Greece and graduated from Greece Arcadia High School in 2000. He attended college at SUNY Oswego where he played baseball. In September 2001 Rob was a sophomore at Oswego when the World Trade Center was attacked by terrorists. Rob always had an interest in civil service or military service but the attack on our country deepened his ambition to pursue military service. In 2005 Burke graduated from college and joined the Army. He commissioned as an Infantry Officer, completed Ranger school and was assigned to Ft. Drum. Rob’s first deployment was in 2007 to Iraq as a Platoon Leader with Charlie Company, 1-87INF 10th Mountain. He was stationed on a Patrol Base in Northern Iraq when he was seriously injured while performing a night raid. Rob was hit with multiple gunshots to his torso, leg and shoulder. He was immediately flown to Germany to stabilize and then onto Walter Reed Medical Center in D.C. for further medical treatment. He then was moved to the West Point Warrior Transition Unit where underwent intensive recovery. Rob spent 11 months recovering from his combat injuries. Once he was recovered he returned to his unit and completed another deployment from 2010-2011 to Northern Afghanistan as an Infantry Captain. Captain Burke left active duty in the Army after his return from his final deployment, he then joined the New York National Guard as a training Officer. A program that really helped aid in Rob’s recovery from his physical and emotional combat injuries is Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing Inc. Project Healing Waters is a program that was offered to Rob at Walter Reed to assist servicemen and women recover physically and emotionally through therapeutic fly fishing, activities and educational outings. PHWFF began in 2005 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center to serve wounded military service members returning from combat in the Middle East. Due to the program’s success in providing therapeutic outdoor recreation to disabled service members it expanded nationwide. When Rob returned to Ft. Drum in 2009 it was on his heart to bring this healing program to the war transition In 2016 at the 10th Annual Project Healing Waters Two-Fly Tournament on the Rose unit at his base. Burke felt the Salm- River in Virginia. on River and bodies of water located throughout Central New York would be a great place to for Project Healing Waters so he set out the person’s disabilities and athletic ability they can still to make it happen. The Ft. Drum chapter began in 2009. It benefit from the quietness of the stream and the veteran provided veteran interaction and offered solace in tranquil interaction,” Rob said. PHWFF is a non-profit organization and relies on the waters to war veterans from Vietnam, Iraq, Gulf War, and generosity of individuals as well as private and corporate newly returning veterans from Afghanistan. “It provides sponsors. All fly fishing and tying equipment is provided at great therapy to traumatic brain injury veterans. The fly no cost to eligible military members. Fishing trips are also fishing helps with motor skills and dexterity. Regardless of provided free of charge to the participants. As part of this program Rob has been on fishing trips with other veterans and their spouses to Alaska, Montana and Virginia. He said, “The trips provide a great opportunity for relationship building during times that wounded veterans can become secluded. Project Healing Waters helps get them out of their comfort zone and into streams to interact and heal.” Rob was the founding volunteer with the Fort Drum PHWFF Chapter and served as the Program Leader from 2009-2011. When he relocated to the Syracuse area he became a veteran’s ambassador for the Syracuse PHWFF Program. Rob, his wife and their two daughters now live in the Syracuse area. Rob Burke is a NYS Trooper on the Special Operations Response Team. The purpose of the Special Operations Response Team is to support the New York State Police with a tactical response to critical events and other specialized assignments within the State. Fire Commissioner Elections Fire Commissioners are elected by popular public vote in New York State. Every December, on the 2nd Tuesday, a Fire Commissioner Board seat becomes available for election to a five year term in the Fire Districts that use Boards as their governing body. The seated incumbent commissioner may decide to run for re-election as there are no term limits for this position. Opponents living in their District, of at least 18 years age, may petition to run for a seat in the election. It is important to note that Fire Commissioners are unpaid elected officials in New York State. The deadline for petitions is November 21, 2018. The role of the Fire Commissioner involves serious responsibilities. It requires knowledge of, or ability and intent to become, adept in many financial and legal tasks such as: •Managing large budgets •Understanding and executing NYS laws governing Fire Districts and open meetings •Completing financial and fiscally responsible analyses that may lead to writing and/or voting in legal motions •Managing projects and properly executing SOPs, especially with regard to purchasing and proper bidding •Maintaining good relationships with the Chief’s Office, internal staff, first responders, officials from outside agencies, vendors, and the general public for which Commissioners swear oath to serve Often, no fewer than two meetings per month are required for the Fire Commissioner to attend where District business and planning occurs. While family and other obligations may require someone to be absent, multiple absences may have a detrimental affect on daily business and morale. In other words, this is an active, hands-on Board position that requires significant effort in order to support the mission, vision, and values of the Fire District in which they serve. Elections in New York for Boards of Fire Commissioners always occur in December on the 2nd Tuesday by law. But the location and time range for polls depends on the individual Fire District. In the case of North Greece, for ex-
ample, the polls are open from 2 PM until 9 PM at only their headquarters location, but those residents in the Barnard District can vote beginning at 4 PM at their Dewey Ave firehouse. Residents should look at their tax bill to learn which Fire District serves their address. Then, contact that Fire District directly for further details. Remember, you must be a registered voter to participate in these elections. If you are a registered voter in any of the following Fire Districts, please SAVE THE DATE and VOTE in this next election on DECEMBER 11, 2018. District’s Elections: Barnard FD: Incumbent Daniel Cappon; vote 12/11 at 3084 Dewey Ave, from 4 PM until 8 PM.
