Gifts For Families continued from page 6
On December 9, 2016 kids from 4-10 years gathered at Messiah Lutheran Church, 4301 Mt. Read Blvd. to make and wrap Christmas gifts for their families. This was a free event sponsored by the Church and was open to the public. There were a variety of gift items for children to make for their parents or other family members, and lots of wrapping paper. Gifts were taken home to be unwrapped at family Christmas celebrations. There was pizza, beverages and ice cream to feed the busy workers. This was also an opportunity for parents to have few hours to shop or have dinner out while the kids are having a good time in a safe place. Photos by Karen Fien

The Healthy Highway Expands by Tami Raco continued from page 10
The Healthy Highway Program began in 2011 at English Village Elementary School. It’s an ongoing program that helps teach kids about healthy nutrition and active lifestyles. The program was designed by Physical Education Specialist, and retired Greece school teacher Wendy Cooper to empower children to make healthy choices in their diet and lifestyle. Cooper partnered the program with the Greece Police Department in January 2015 as the Healthy Highway Heroes, the area’s first ever interactive program where schools, police officers and children work together to create a healthier lifestyle. This year the program expanded to three elementary schools in the Greece School District - Lakeshore, Longridge and English Village. Greece Police Sergeant Jared Rene says, “The test school, English Village, received this Healthy Highway program so well we are excited to expand it to other schools. The program’s goal is to help children be more aware of their health by making better decisions with nutrition and activity. Another important benefit is the program helps to build relationships between police and children in the community by positive connections and reinforcements of a healthy lifestyle.” The Healthy Highway Heroes Program 2017 kicks off in early February in the schools with an opening assembly. The principal of each school has shown support for the program by assigning a “Key Driver” staff member to help with day to day interactions between the school and the Greece Police. Police officers come in several times a month to interact with the kids and encourage them as they make healthier choices in their diet and activity levels. They eat lunch with them, read, watch relevant videos, assign special projects and even bring in special guests like Chip the K9 police dog. During March, to celebrate National Nutrition Month, there will be a Healthy Highway Heroes challenge between the children and the police officers that tracks healthy foods and exercise and compares end results between the kids and officers. Sgt. Jared Rene says, “This challenge helps get the competitive juices flowing. The ‘winner’ of the challenge gets a lunch served to them by the ‘losers’ of the challenge.” To learn more about the Healthy Highway Program visit www.wendyhcooper.com. New President, New Ideas for GPAS by Barbara Burke
The Greece Performing Arts Society (GPAS) has a new President, Eric Vaughn Johnson. Johnson was appointed by the GPAS Board of Directors after Paula Kosierek stepped down from the position. Kosierek has served 12 years on the GPAS Board of Directors, and will continue working on the Board. “Eric’s theatrical and musical experience, as well as his community involvement, made him an ideal candidate,” Kosiorek said. “He is full of energy and new ideas that can take GPAS to the next level.” The GPAS organization was founded in 1969 as a volunteer organization with the goal of bringing a broad range of artistic activities to Greece. All of GPAS musicians, Board of Directors, committee members and event chair people are volunteers. Currently GPAS consists of five Groups - Coral Society, Community Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, Concert Band and Jazz Band. Johnson has some new, innovative ideas for GPAS that will have immediate effects. “I am all about being efficient. My plan includes opportunities for the five Groups to work together and become more involved with each other. There is strength together. It is easier to be bigger and better, the important part is becoming more efficient,” he says. Six weeks into Johnson’s leadership most of the new plans are “in full swing.” GPAS has 200 performing members and 100 non-performing members. Immediate plans include a new Community Theatre Group, Collaborations in Programs and Events between GPAS’s five existing Groups, greater involvement with the Greece schools and students, formation of a Visual Arts Program and in 2018 formation of a Dance Group. “We have opportunities for all skill levels, whether you per-

form as a hobby, or if you are looking to get more professional in your art,” Johnson says. Eric Vaughn Johnson has a rich history of theatrical and musical experience, and he is very active in community service. He is currently the Business Manager and Program Director of the Rochester Association of the Performing Arts (RAPA) where he coordinates educational programs, theatre bookings, and Youth and RAPA Family Theatre seasons. He is also Managing Director of OFC Creations Photo on front cover and above by and Artistic Director of Karen Fien SNAP Musical Theatre. SNAP Musical Theatre is a non-profit, innovative and creative summer program open to all children entering grades 6 through 10 in Greece, New York and surrounding areas. SNAP is part of Greece Community Education. For more information visit www.snapmusicals.org. Johnson’s most recent accomplishments include directing “West Side Story,” “Mary Poppins” and “Miracle on 34th Street” at RAPA’s Main Stage productions at the Kodak Center for Performing Arts. He has partnered with FacingRace, Embracing Equity for a benefit production of “The Wiz” at the Rochester Science Museum, he brought RAPA and the Rochester Latino Theatre Company together for a production of “In the Heights,” they performed seven soldout shows of this production. In 2017 Johnson will continue his partnership with the LGBT Giving Circle and Broadway Cares to produce “The Wild Party.” He plans to work with the GPAS Board to form partnerships between GPAS, RAPA and other Rochester Arts organizations. Eric Vaughn Johnson grew up in Pittsford, New York and developed a keen interest in film. “I always thought I’d be the next Steven Spielberg, but I fell in love with live theatre and the process of creating art live, right in front of an audience,” he says. Johnson attended Nazareth College in Pittsford. He has remained active in his hometown and gives of his creative time and energy. In January 2017 he was Artistic Director for a production of “Oliver” starring 7th and 8th grade students from his alma mater Barker Road Middle School in Pittsford. In early spring 2017 GPAS will hold a Press Conference announcing many of the changes involved in the “next level” of the organization. Watch for an announcement of their Spring Schedule and Programs, a new website, new logo, Social Media pages, and a focus on community involvement which includes informational booths at the larger area Arts Festivals. From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich I hope everyone is staying safe and warm as we battle through another western New York winter season. I would like to remind residents to allow for extra travel time during their commute, and to be mindful of weather warnings. If you’re interested in learning about 3D printer technology, there are lots of opportunities right here in Greece at the main branch of our library. Orientation and certification sessions for the library’s Ultimaker 3D printer are offered monthly, and on February 21 library staff will offer a “Designing a 3D Pendant” class where you can learn the basics of using Tinker CAD 3D modeling software. For more information about 3D printing or to register for a class, contact the Library at 225-8951. For a second year in a row, we have opened our Greece Town Hall Ice Rink. The rink, located at the pickle ball courts, provides residents with the opportunity for some great outdoor activity with family and friends during these winter months. The rink is free for all Greece residents and $1 for non-residents. The next time you’re in need for some fun outdoor activity, stop by Town Hall and check out the new rink. Additionally, Tuesday February 14th our great staff at the Community and Senior Center will be hosting our annual Senior Valentine’s Day party. For more information on this event and other Community and Senior Center
events please call 723-2425. Remember, you can now follow us on Twitter (@GreeceTown) and Facebook for event updates and other Town related news in addition to checking our website. As always, I enjoy hearing feedback from residents about programming and other town related issues. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office.

“Dixie? Dixie Andrews! Is that you?” Emma rushed over to the girl with the short golden hair and tapped her on the shoulder. “Mrs. Baxter! Hi!” “It’s good to see you, Dixie! That was quite the fireworks display wasn’t it! Loud though. My ears are still ringing! So, what have you been up to since you graduated from Duckwood Community? Please! Tell me you’ve been able to put your degree and that tremendous talent and creativity you have to good use.” “I have! I’m working at a small TV station upstate. Creative Assistant! I just love it.” “Wonderful! They’re lucky to have you. I’ll never forget that little film you made. Marzipan Fever. So clever. How in the world did you ever come up with an idea like that? It was a masterpiece, Dixie.” “Thank you! It was a lot of fun making it. I think my brothers still have the fan blade antlers stuffed in their closet.” Dixie laughed, blushing. “Oh! have introduced you! This is my boyfriend, Mike. Mike, this is Mrs. Baxter. She was one of my teachers at Duckwood Community College. My favorite teacher!” “It’s nice to meet you, Mike. So, you’re Dixie’s boyfriend. You must have been the purple haired hero in Marzipan Fever! Oh, no… Wait a minute…. I’m so sorry…. I just remembered… I heard about…. You can’t be….. Oh, I am so sorry. Please, forgive me.” And Emma rushed away, flustered, embarrassed, appalled by her stupidity. She had stuck her foot in her mouth again. Said the wrong thing. She had been doing that too frequently these days. In front of her students when she was teaching a class, in front of her colleagues at meetings. A scatterbrained, forgetful fool. Maybe now was the time. She should retire, like Caleb had done. Caleb had retired almost a year ago. He was so happy! Instead of grumping around the house and frowning all the time, he smiled and whistled. He brought out his pencils and pastels and started drawing again. Scenes of places of interest around the town - The east courtyard at Duckwood Community College, geese on the pond at Cobbs Hill Park, patrons munching on hot dogs from a street vendor’s cart outside the Hall of Justice downtown. She would come home from work every day to hear the radio tuned to the jazz station and find Caleb humming along as he put the finishing touches on dinner. And they started going to bed together again. She would fall asleep

with her head on Caleb’s shoulder, thinking of nothing except how soft and warm his skin was under her hand as she rubbed his chest and how good life could be. They had been sitting at the table after dinner one night having tea and amaretto pound cake, when Caleb had looked at her and smiled. But it was an odd smile - kind of confused, kind of sad. The cup had dropped out of his hand, bounced off the table and shattered on the floor. The tea had spread out in a puddle, soaking the napkins brown and dripping over the edge. And Caleb had keeled over, dead. Heart attack. He’d had three weeks to be the happiest he had been in years. And then it was over. Forty-two years they’d been together! Married for forty of those forty-two years! And now he was gone and she was alone. She had done her best to recoup herself - gone back to the classroom, gotten used to having grief as her constant companion. And she had decided to start that book she had always dreamed of writing. Only instead of a book of carefree fiction for young adults as she had originally planned, it would be a novel about relationships and stress and corporate America’s involvement in the destruction of the human spirit. It was giving her trouble though. She had plenty of ideas but she was having a hard time coming up with the right words to express what she really wanted to say. She could feel the perfect word hovering in her head, trying to materialize, sitting on the threshold but then it would deconstruct and float away before she could catch it, before she could make it flow through the pen or tap out on the keys. One thing she was not having a hard time with was the characters. She had them all mapped out in her head, each one loosely based on real people that she knew or had known. The main character, the star of the book, would be based on her dear Caleb. She was going to call him Carl. Emma would be called Emily. Emma laughed. But it was not a happy sound.
Poetic License GONE It only takes a second It’s odd how things can change Normal is rear-ended And things are not the same Confusion bends the brain waves The heart beat speeds and slows Legs buckle and collapse The breath catches in the throat And those that remain Stand stranded Lost and alone Scrabbling To make sense of the senseless Wondering Where life’s essence has gone

Sam DeRosa North Greece Fire District’s First Paid Fire Chief
by Tami Raco
The addition of a paid Fire Chief position was approved by the North Greece Fire District in 2008. For 95 years the district operated without having a paid fire chief. With the growth of the district it became apparent a paid Fire Chief was needed to lead in administration and operations. According to Linda Andreano, who serves as the Board Chairwoman of Fire Commissioners, the district did not rush into filling this position because it is a critical position and they wanted the perfect candidate. The District chose Greece resident Sam DeRosa for the position. He has an extensive background of experience suited for the job. He most recently served as Monroe County’s appointee as the Interim Director of Monroe County Office of Emergency Management. He also served as the Monroe County Fire Coordinator since 2008. “I’m thrilled and honored that Sam chose to join our Fire District family,” said Linda Andreano, “Sam is a consummate professional with both the mastery and the passion needed to lead this organization. Our residents should feel safe knowing that Sam is at the helm of our Fire District.” DeRosa was sworn into office in November 2016 at a ceremony held at The Greece Performing Arts Center. In attendance were 100’s of guests, including many County officials. DeRosa officially began his position as Fire Chief in mid December. He is known as a Fire Service professional with an outstanding reputation for the highest integrity and passion for the service. Andreano calls it the DeRosa affect. She says, “Kind of like lake affect but he brings climate change for a better fire district. Sam brings to our table even more than we hoped we could find in a single candidate. We are confident that every aspect of our organization will immediately feel the benefits of Sam’s vision New North Greece Fire District Chief Sam DeRosa (left) and Gates Fire Departand methodology.” Photo by Karen Fien ment Chief Jim Harrington (right) at the swearing in ceremony for Chief DeRosa

2017 Conservation Tree and Shrub Program Launched Winter has arrived and spring will be here before you know it! In preparation, the Monroe County Soil and Water Conservation District has released their Conservation Tree and Shrub species list for the spring of 2017. This year, property owners will have the opportunity to pre-order more than 42 different species of bare-root conifers, hardwood trees, shrubs, wildflowers and groundcovers, as well as seed mixes and other products used for conservation projects. Packages range in unit size and price, from a bundle of 10 plants for as low as $11, to bundles of 100 plants for as low as $70. The district will be offering the following new species this year: Arrowwood, Silverberry, Wild Plum, Bearberry, and Purple Coneflower. An editable fruit multipacks and a new wildlife food plot seed mix will also be offered this year. The new edible fruit pack will provide an opportunity for you to grow and harvest your own fresh fruit including: cold tolerant strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, and two varieties of blueberry plants. These fruits are also great for attracting wildlife! “Planting trees and shrubs is perhaps the most effective way for individuals to help keep our environment clean and green,” said District Executive Director Kelly Emerick. “In addition to providing shade, privacy, wildlife habitat, borders, windbreaks and snow fences, trees provide many environmental benefits not visible to the eye.” She explained, “They work as filters to help protect drinking water, clean the air of pollutants, stabilize soil to prevent erosion, and reduce noise by acting as sound barriers. Trees can help cool your home in the summer, and break cold winds in the winter, helping to reduce energy use. They can even add value to your property.” The Conservation Tree and Shrub Program is a pre-order program with a deadline for ordering on March 3, 2017. We have a limited availability for plant stock so to ensure we can meet your needs, order early! The distribution of the plan material will occur at the Monroe County Ecopark on April 20-21, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Those interested in this program can find the order form and our full color catalog on the District’s website: www.monroecountyswcd.org or you can pick up an order form at your local Town/ Village Clerk Department. If you have any questions or you’d like the form sent to you, contact the Monroe County Soil and Water Conservation District at (585) 753-7380, Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Provided Information

Natural ways to help your child with ADD/ADHD by Tami Mungenast, CPT, CNWC
ADD/ADHD is a disease reaching epidemic proportions in the past 20 years. It is a neurological disorder in which the prefrontal cortex of the brain is under-functioning. The prefrontal cortex is responsible for impulse control, higher order thinking, social cues, memory, and emotion regulation. When the right neurotransmitters are not being properly released, children struggle with concentration and may have trouble sitting still. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, “The number of children being diagnosed with this disorder is increasing, but it is unclear why.” Overall eleven percent of children are being diagnosed with this disorder and 4.2 million are treated with long term medication, a 2800% increase since the 1970’s. Experts believe the increase could be related to several factors: 1) Having better tools to diagnose the disorder. 2) Children being exposed to a vast array of toxins from conception through their childhood. Mothers now live in a more toxic environment. Our air, water, and food are experiencing a steady increase in contaminants. A study in 2005 analyzed the umbilical cord blood of a mother to the unborn baby. On average 200 industrial chemicals were found in the cord blood, many are known to be toxic to the brain and nervous system. 3) Nutritional factors are another influence that likely play a role in the increase of ADD/ADHD. Over the last 30 years national statistics show that children’s nutrition has shifted to a diet of industrially processed foods. These foods are nutritionally void in many cases and full of preservatives and chemicals. Sound research shows that some of these chemicals in our food can cause hyperactivity in normal children and worsen behaviors and focus. 4) The Electronic Onslaught Several studies examined the relationship between watching TV, playing video games and using mobile devices and the increase of ADD/ADHD. Studies show the more a child engages in this activity the more likely they are to have issues with concentration, focus and hyperactivity. Due to the barrage of fast moving graphics and nonstop media it appears attention spans are getting shorter and shorter. This especially affects children. New brain cells and connections are being formed and reorganized. If your child struggles with focus and/or was diagnosed with ADHD/ADD and you are seeking natural ways to help them take a look at the following suggestions. Dietary Changes: Avoiding or reducing trigger foods such as; sugar, gluten, conventional dairy, and caffeine. Also completely avoid the food additives MSG and HVP. These items are believed to cause a decrease in dopamine levels in children and adults. Balanced dopamine levels are essential for those who suffer from ADD/ADHD symptoms. Supplements: •Fish Oil (1000mg) it is highly suggested that every child with ADD/ADHD symptoms will benefit from taking a high quality daily omega 3 fatty acid supplements. This one single supplement has shown to cause positive changes in children with symptoms. Increased focus, improved learning, decreased hyperactivity and better emotional stability has been reported just from daily use continued on page 33

Natural ways to help your child with ADD/ADHD continued from page 29
of this one supplement. •Multi Mineral Supplement; (Zinc and Magnesium and Calcium). These all play a role in relaxing the nervous system. A deficiency can worsen ADD/ADHD symptoms. •Vitamin B Complex (50mg daily); Vitamin B (especially vitamin B6) helps with the formation of serotonin. •Essential Oils; Certain essential oils have also been found to be helpful in improving focus, concentration and enhanced memory and clarity. Cedar wood, Rosemary, Peppermint, Lavender and Frankincense are a few cited by the American Medical Association Journal. For more information on how to use oils see an Essential Oil professional. Lifestyle changes: Changing some lifestyle behaviors can provide a natural cure to help reduce symptoms. Having daily exercise, outdoor activity, limiting screen time and more sleep can effectively support the efforts to treat the child with ADD/ADHD naturally. Lastly, one of the most exciting finds in the field of neuroscience is the discovery that the brain can be changed and grow based on experiences. Working on focus and attention can actually help rewire portions of the brain to help develop better skills. This in addition to the diet, lifestyle and supplementation can help improve your child’s success in life. See your healthcare professional for diagnosis and before using any supplementation.
