The Greece Historical Society Education Committee is working on updating the school exhibit at the Historical Society Museum. The plan is to show the progression when students moved from one-room settings to larger individual classrooms. The donations they are seeking would show how things changed during the 40s and 50s. Items needed include metal lunch boxes, Dick & Jane readers, globes, pull down maps, cursive writing booklets, or anything else related to school days in the 40s & 50s. They are also looking for photographs and/ or memorabilia from Greece elementary schools. Original photos can be scanned and returned to the owner with the copies used in the exhibit. Please contact Kathie Firkins at: (585) 621-2869 or (585) 943-2869 if you have any of these items that you would like to donate to the Greece Historical Society.

Finding Purpose Through the Arts

GreeceNewsNY.com July 2018 17

by Barbara Burke

It only took six months to write his book, but it has been in the works for the past 24 years. Eric Vaughn Johnson leads a very full life. He believes in the arts and he believes in his community and bringing the two together. That is where he invests his energy. As an active member of the Rochester Theatre Arts scene, Eric recently became an author. In his first book entitled “My Quarter-Life Crisis,” Eric recounts memories of his first 24 years and the events that led up to where he is now. He says, “The book follows every year of my life from age three. Each chapter tells countless stories from my life that paint a bigger picture. The role models, inspirations, movie making, theatre, college, finding my place in the world and becoming comfortable with who I am.” Eric says his writing style is comical and includes thoughts and commentary on every page. The theme of “My Quarter-Life Crisis” revolves around finding purpose in the arts. The first chapter in the book is titled “Finding My Purpose,” talking about how we all fit in the world. Eric says, “The main idea is to love what you do, and more importantly it is okay to change your mind. No matter how successful you believe you are, or how many goals you reach, it is okay to push one step further, if that doesn’t work, start over and begin a new adventure.” The book addresses the conflicts involved with the beliefs that in order to do anything worthwhile in the arts you need to be in NYC or LA, and that you can’t make a career out of the arts. He says, “The hope is through this book kids of all ages, and their parents, can see how the countless arts-based opportunities they take part in can absolutely blossom into being fulfilled in a career as an adult.” The book includes numerous stories about Eric as a kid and as a teenager and the experiences that taught him to love what he does, and not to settle for anything less. The book is recommended for ages 10 and up. He says his book was inspired by, “Kids. Our kids are our future. If I didn’t have my role models growing up I would certainly not be happily where I am today. With the arts consistently being cut and reassessed in schools, it is a personal mission of mine to allow all students, inner city, suburban, and rural, the opportunity to experience the joys of theatrical entertainment. Theatre teaches self-confidence, public speaking and teamwork and is a place to discover safely who you are in the world.” As the title of the book suggests, Eric Vaughn Johnson will turn 25 years of age on July 3rd. His involvement in the Rochester Arts community is impressive. Currently Eric works with countless theatrical productions both on- and off-stage. He serves as the Business Manager and Program Director of Rochester Association of the Performing Arts (RAPA), designing all educational programs for students from ages four to eighty-four during the academic year. Additionally, he spearheads RAPA’s new intensive Summer

Stock program. He designs the RAPA Family Theatre and Youth Theatre seasons and directs several of these productions throughout the year. In 2016, Eric became the President of the Greece Performing Arts Society (GPAS) and is now leading the organization into their next chapter. He also teaches theatre arts in several local schools, as well as private acting lessons and he mentors inspiring young directors. Previously he served for four years in Greece as the Artistic Director of SNAP Musical Theatre. Eric has partnered with community organizations including Facing Race, Embracing Equity, Rochester Latino Theatre Company and the Out Alliance for benefits and fundraisers. “My Quarter-Life Crisis” will be released on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at the Book Release Celebration at Writers and Books, 740 University Avenue, Rochester, NY 14607. The Celebration will be held from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. and will feature complimentary champagne, light hors d’oeuvres, music, photos, and your first chance to purchase and take home a copy of “My Quarter-Life Crisis.” The book release is open to the public, no tickets are needed. The world wide release will take place the day after on July 19, 2018 with copies available for purchase at www. EricVaughnJohnson.com.

From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich With warmer days here again, here at Town Hall we are preparing for a very busy summer filled with our fun and family-friendly annual events. We are excited to bring back community favorites such as the Jerry J. Helfer Memorial Food Truck Rodeo, Summer Concert Series, the Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration, and many more. I was honored to once again co-host the Town of Greece Memorial Day Parade and Remembrance Ceremony with the Greece American Legion Post #468.The Memorial Day Parade featured such participants as Greece Post 468 Color Guard, Legion Posts, the Rochester Honor Flight, the Monroe County Veteran Services Agency, the Greece Town Board, Elected Officials, Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops, Fire and Police Departments, Ambulance Services, Marching Bands, the Taekwondo School, Lucky Tikes Daycare, and the Rochester Street Machines. Following the parade was the Town of Greece Remembrance Ceremony, where remarks were given and conflict names were read in memory of those who served our country and paid the

ultimate price. All in attendance had the opportunity to visit the Gary Beikirch Veterans Memorial Wall, located on the east side of Greece Town Hall, where 26 new veteran names were recently inscribed. Since the dedication of our Veteran’s Memorial Wall on May 31, 1999, we have added thousands of names to the wall. Thank you to all who came out to join us on Memorial Day as we honored and remembered all those who have served our great country. We are also in full swing in preparation for our Town’s Old Fashioned Fourth of July celebration. This annual event takes place on July 4th and is free and open to the public. The 5K Freedom Run will kick off the day’s festivities and lead into a day filled with family friendly activities, including a Super Hero Sprint for kids, food trucks, children’s activities, musical performances, and concluding with a fireworks spectacle. Musical performers this year include the popular band Orleans, and Rochester’s very own Josie Waverly! Seven Tips for Exercising in the Summer Heat by Tami Mungenast, CPT, CNWC

Summer is a great time of year to get outdoors for your exercise activities. Running, swimming, biking, sports, and walks are fun ways to get your exercise in while absorbing vitamin D and getting fresh air. As the mercury rises in the heat of summer so does the risk of heat related issues. Heat exhaustion, heat stroke, sun burns and heat cramps are at risk when the temperatures are warmer and the sun is hottest. To help prevent heat related complications follow these tips. 1. Time of Day: Generally its best to get your outdoor workout in the morning or late in evening especially on hot summer days.

2. Water: Being hydrated is super critical if you plan to exercise especially in the heat. The average person loses almost 85 ounces of fluid per day without factoring in exercise. It is recommended that you drink 8 fluid ounces every 15 minutes or so when exercising in the heat. Also the color of your urine is a good indicator if you are properly hydrated. The closer to clear it is, the better your hydration is. Use electrolyte replacement products to help you especially in the event you are perspiring excessively. 3. Sunscreen: Sunburn is harmful to the skin and can increase risk to skin cancers. Apply water/sweat resistant sunscreen before you head outside to exercise. Reapply every few hours if you stay out in the sun for prolonged time. 4. Exercise attire: Wear loose fitting or light weight wicking clothing to help pull sweat away from the skin and allow your skin to breathe. Lighter colors are also best over dark colors which will attract the sun. 5. Choose shaded pathways: On hot days, choose shaded trails and paths that help keep you out of the sun. 6. Check the weather forecast: Be aware of heat advisories and high ozone warnings. On days these warnings are in the forecast its best to work out in a gym or at home. 7. Listen to your body: If you feel dizzy, faint or nauseous stop exercising immediately.

Lucas’ Eagle project was at Basil Marella Park where he de-

signed and built a new outdoor message board near the frisbee gold course. Kent’s project was improving the landscaping and community atmosphere at the Gardens at Towne Center Senior Living Apartments. Provided Information

Troop #278 Boy Scouts and leaders turned out for the Court of Honor Ceremony in support of their newly named Eagle Scouts (center holding insignia L- Kent Johnson, R-Lucas Jones).

Town of Greece Eagle Scout Recognition Award An official Eagle Scout Award Medal Presentation Ceremony was held on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at the Greece Town Board Meeting. The Town of Greece Eagle Scout Recognition Medal is presented to all Boy Scouts who have recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in their local troop. “At Tuesday evening’s Town Board meeting, I had the privilege of presenting a proclamation and medal Ryan Papke of Scout Troop Number 195 on his recent achievement of Eagle Scout ranking. Ryan achieved the rank of Eagle Scout through his efforts in landscaping the picnic area at the Veteran’s Women’s Homeless Shelter on Cypress Avenue in the City of Rochester. Thank you for your dedication to a project that provides a home for our great veterans,” Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich said. The Boy Scouts of America, one of the United States largest youth organizations, is dedicated to promoting self-reliance, courage, and patriotism among young men. The Eagle Scout Award is attained after countless hours of hard work, sacrifice, and dedica-

tion to the scouting creed.

Genesee Valley Council on the Arts Announces Kick-Off of the 2019 Grants Cycle Genesee Valley Arts Grants, part of the Decentralization Program of the New York State Council on the Arts, are administered by the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts in Monroe and Livingston County. The grants are intended to support art and cultural programming such as exhibitions, workshops, public installations, demonstrations, performances, festivals, screenings, and readings. Projects may range from local cultural traditions to contemporary creative expression. Ideally, the funded projects are community-based, have far-reaching appeal, and are broad and inclusive in their reach. Art and cultural events are an opportunity for life-long learning, entertainment, and overall life enrichment. The goal, through the Genesee Valley Arts Grants, is to increase advocacy and access to the arts in Livingston and Monroe County communities that traditionally have been underserved (those communities who have limited access to services, may be marginalized due to geography, race, economic status, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, or disability). The desired result is a higher sense of community, identity, and positive outlook on the role of art and culture for life in the Genesee Valley Region of Western New York. New and innovative initiatives, that have the potential of becoming sustainable and independent, are encouraged. Applications are funded with priorities of: new programming, service to under-served populations, artistic merit, community involvement and feasibility. The applicant must be a non-profit organization located in Livingston or Monroe County, or an artist working in partnership with a

non-profit organization (this includes churches and towns/ villages). Applicants under the Artist in Education or Individual Artist Tier may apply as individuals. This year the Council will be awarding over $100,000 in grants between Livingston and Monroe Counties. Applicants may apply for up to three grants totaling $5,000. The average grant is $1500 per project. Beginning in June, Grant Seminars will be offered to familiarize applicants with the grant writing and application process. First-time applicants are required to attend one seminar. RSVP required, 2 days in advance. For more information, and a full schedule of upcoming seminars, please visit grants.gvartscouncil.org. Program development and grant-writing assistance are also available by contacting the Program Coordinator, by phone: 585-243-6785 or by email: melissa@gvartscouncil.org. Provided Information
