St. Leo’s teens help the homeless - On Saturday, November 25, 1995 Junior High youth from St. Leo’s in Hilton braved the cold and drizzle to spend four hours at Marketplace Mall loading Salvation Army trucks with donated food and clothes. They were part of the workforce assisting radio station DJ Scott Spezzano raise monies for the homeless. Many families stayed with the teens giving moral and physical support. Michelle Fiorino, who was the driving force behind a cookbook produced in spring of 1995, made a presentation of a check in the amount of $378.50 which was the profit from the cookbook sales and a bottle drive conducted by the teens. The WPXY staff gave a loud cheer for the efforts of the St. Leo’s teens.

A Christmas fairyland. In 1990, Tina Campbell of 78 Sweden Hills in Brockport did her Christmas decorating on a large scale. Her yard was lighted by 6,000 Christmas bulbs. Carol and Ed Merante created a nativity scene which featured a city of 75 figures. It took the couple about six to eight hours to set up the scene in their Chili home for Christmas 1992.

In the Christmas spirit - Kevin Swartout had to wear different hats as a Brockport Village employee. When he and fellow workers strung the Christmas lights on Main Street in November 1989, of course, he had to wear the appropriate hat for the season! Photo by John Clifford.

Fred Perrine hung a wreath on a street lamp in Brockport’s business section. A record-setting 74 degree temperature in November 1990 meant Christmas decorators could do their work in shirt sleeves.

Donna Seaward, owner of Seaward Candies, inscribes a piece of chocolate in December 1991.

Shirt sleeve weather - Tom and Delores Eldridge of Cottage Street, Spencerport, took advantage of the 74 degree temperature on Wednesday, November 29, 1990 to string Christmas lights in a tree in their yard. Strong winds that evening brought more seasonal temperatures and probably did some rearranging of the Christmas light, too. Photo by John Clifford.

Children brought holiday cheer to Lakeside in December 1991 - Members of the First Presbyterian Church Youth Club raised $129 for the Radiology department and Child Care Center at Lakeside Memorial Hospital. The Church Youth Club, located in Brockport, held a Santa’s workshop, which was coordinated by Ann Smith. The money donated by the organization went towards children’s books for Radiology and a rocking chair for the Child Care Center. The big guy dressed in red was in Clarendon December 10, 1989 for a parade and other community activities. One of Santa’s jobs while in Clarendon, besides listening to a few special requests from area children, was to light the community Christmas tree. The event was sponsored by the Clarendon Beautification Committee. Photo by Doug Meszler.

“It’s not love until you give it away” - Hilton’s Northwood Elementary School children collected over a hundred toys in December 1995 as part of benefactor Girlie Goodwin’s, center, annual toy donation to the Craig Developmental Disabilities Service Office in Geneseo. The 50th year of Goodwin’s campaign to serve children and adults in group homes at Christmas, the project was coordinated by Northwood music teacher JoAnn Kehrli-Merlau. Northwood students also collected food for a project coordinated by fourth grade teacher Julie Bushnell, an annual service project for the school.

Their spirit showed - The ladies at the Churchville-Chili Middle School cafeteria had a reputation for holiday spirit. No matter what the holiday, they and their kitchen were always appropriately “dressed” for the occassion. In December 1989, Mr. and Mrs. S. Claus and their elves served lunch.
