Total Carbs vs Net Carbs… What Really Counts? by Tami Mungenast CPT CNWC
With the growing popularity of a healthier carbohydrate life style for weight management and improved health, we often hear the term “Net Carbs” or “Impact Carbs.” This terminology can leave people confused as to what the difference is and how it affects them. The truth is all carbs are not created equal. An impact carb or net carb is basically any type of carbohydrate that has a high impact on your blood sugar level. These carbohydrates digest rapidly and go into the blood stream and create an insulin spike. They are converted into immediate energy, stored energy or stored as body fat in the presence of a higher carb intake. Basically too many net carbs can be damaging not only to your waistline but also to your health leading to illnesses like obesity, metabolic resistance and Type 2 Diabetes. Non-impact carbs on the other hand enter the blood stream at a much slower rate and typically do not cause an insulin spike or lead to fat storage. To determine what the net carbs or impact carbs of a food are you subtract the grams of fiber per serving from the total carbohydrates per serving. For example if a food item has 15 grams of carbs and 5 grams of fiber, it has 10 net carbs. That means only 10 of those carbs will impact blood sugar. Fiber does not spike blood sugar. Fiber is essential for internal organ function and in the carb counting world it’s considered a “free carb.” Consuming foods with fiber make this type of carb a win-win for those who are health conscience. Foods that are low in net carbs such as nutrient Before
dense vegetables and fruits have a minimal impact on blood sugar and are excellent choices for anyone looking to achieve a healthy weight and better health.

Mission Share Outreach Center renovated and serving the community by Tami Raco
Mission Share is a collaborative effort of 12 evangelical churches in the Greece area. Each of these churches invests their time and resources to help Mission Share support families in need who reside in the community. Through the ministry partner’s generosity, Mission Share is able to actively demonstrate God’s love in tangible ways to neighbors in Greece, Hilton and Charlotte. The 12 church ministry partners are: Aldersgate United Methodist Church, First Bible Baptist Church, Greece Assembly of God, Journey Christian Church, Lakeshore Community Church, Lakeview Community Church, MorningStar Christian Fellowship Church, New Testament Christian Church, New Way Christian Faith Center, Orchard Community Church, Victory Community Church. Mission Share began 28 years ago in 1993 as a program within Greece Assembly of God. It started as a Christmas outreach program to help local families in need. From there it expanded into a Food Pantry providing food items to those who needed assistance. In 1994, Mission Share began their Thanksgiving basket program and later that year started their Clothing Closest. The outreach efforts eventually led to a Christmas program for children of incarcerated parents. In 2008 Mission Share became a Non Profit Corporation and the following year they moved into their own leased space at 10 Cedarfield Commons in Greece. The new location allowed them to expand on the programs they were already offering providing more space for their clothing closet and food pantry. Foods items are donated by the church partners and through Food Link they provide to families in crisis 3 meals a day for 3 days. The clothing center offers donated clothing to an entire family in need from adults to newborns. In 2011, the Mission Share Outreach Center began Crossroads Pregnancy Care. This program is dedicated to providing compassionate care to pregnant women and their

partners while experiencing the crisis of an unexpected pregnancy. The center offers free services ranging from confidential pregnancy tests, information, medical and adoption referrals, comprehensive counseling to support pregnant teens, post abortion care, prenatal and parenting classes, basic food and clothing assistance as well as baby care items. A Backpack Outreach program was also created. This program provides backpacks filled with school supplies to qualified school age children in the community. This past summer Mission Share was approached by Wegman’s with an incredibly generous offer to help support their initiatives by enhancing the programs they were offering to the community. Wegmans funded an extensive renovation at their Cedarfield Commons location. The project was completed in early February of this year. With the generosity of Wegmans, Mission Share has an expanded food pantry with better organization and new refrigeration units. This renovation provides the opportunity to offer healthier fresh food options to the community. A Wellness Center was added with a blood pressure continued on page 12

Installation of Shut-Off Valves, New Piping, and a New Berm Structure in Flood-Risk Areas In an effort to limit potential floodwater damages, the Town of Greece has commissioned the installation of shutoff valves, new piping, and a new berm structure in critical locations where the surging waters caused the greatest impact throughout last year’s flooding events. During the severe flooding event that occurred over several months last year, the high lake and pond levels caused water to surge back up storm pipes and caused flooding along our shoreline roads. At the peak of this flooding, Town DPW staff deployed and maintained, around the clock, approximately 41 pumps ranging from 4” to 8” in an effort to keep flood waters from making our roads impassable. Basically, pump hoses were placed in the storm sewer at the storm grates, which threw the surging waters back into the ponds and the lake. However, these many pumps needed to be maintained and fueled so they could operate 24 hours/day. Knowing that water front residents may experience similar conditions this year, Supervisor Reilich started exploring a better and more efficient way to assist with managing the effects of the surges of water. Through much research it was determined that installing shut-off valves and new piping would ease the stress of operating and fueling pumps 24 hours a day. Once the shut off valves are installed, and if we expe-

Helping Children Experience the World Through Play by Barbara Burke
Greece Librarian Jennifer Preisser has been with the Greece Public Library for 11 years, she currently works as the Children’s Librarian. This September 2018 at the Association of Library Service to Children (ALSC) National Conference, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Preisser will be presenting, to the conference, a program she developed for the Greece Public Library entitled “Inspiring Sensory Play: Babies and Toddlers.” The Association of Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association, is the world’s largest organization dedicated to the support and enhancement of library service to children. ALSC’s network includes more than 4,000 children’s and youth librarians, children’s literature experts, publishers, education and library school faculty members and other adults dedicated to engaging communities to build healthy successful futures for all children. ALSC holds a national conference every other year and when a call for proposals to present Children’s Programs at the 2018 Conference was sent out, Preisser consulted with her supervisor, created a slide show and detailed description of her program and submitted it for consideration. It was accepted. “I felt this Early Literacy Skill of Play program was something other librarians and families should know about,” she says. Pressier says, “I visited the Brooklyn, New York Children’s Library where I got the idea for a sensory program. It snowballed from there. I started with eight sensory stations, it took two years for the program to develop completely, and currently we have 20 stations in the Greece Library Program.” “Inspiring Sensory Play: Babies and Toddlers” is a monthly program presented at the Greece Library for babies five months up to two years, with an adult. The program focuses on early literacy skills through five specific areas Reading, Writing, Singing, Talk and Play, with a main concentration on learning through Play. Babies can explore a variety
of sensory stations including a bubble wrap runway, shredded paper pool, sticky wall, water table, a play box that includes ribbons and lights and more, a total of 20 different stations are set up with one-on-one sensory boards as well as group stations where babies learn social skills such as sharing, taking turns and interaction within a group. A favorite activity of many of the children as they experience the program is playing in the kiddie pools. One pool is filled with balls and another with shredded paper. The type of play incorporated in the sensory program builds vocabulary, fine and gross motor skills, social skills continued on page 19

and confidence. As a baby plays freely, they are exploring their environment. Exploring soft, sticky, wet, smooth, bumpy, and squishy is what sensory play is made of. “Parents love the program. It is a great way for them to learn how play can be very important to learning and they can replicate the play stations at home,” Preisser says. Libraries and parents can implement this program on any budget and create play stations using simple dollar store items. Jennifer loves her job as the Children’s Librarian at Greece Public Library. “It is great to work for the Town of Greece. We have a great team, they are terrific people to work with. The Town has been very supportive of the Library. I wouldn’t want to be any other place than at the Library. I always tell the children to do what you love to do, and I am fortunate that I can do what I love,” Preisser says. For more information on The Association of Library Service to Children’s (ALSC) visit their website at http://www. ala.org/alsc/. The next scheduled Baby Sensory Program at the Greece Public Library will be held on Wednesday, March 7th at 9:30AM in the Welsh Room. The program is free and open to the public. Rotary Donates to Food Shelf
One of Greece Rotary’s “fun” projects each year is to volunteer at the Rohrbach Beer Stand during assigned Red Wings Baseball Games. Tips are then donated by the night’s beer drinkers...and they in turn are used to fund project for the Greece community. Rotary President Chuck Gannon recently presented Amy Peritsky, Chair of the Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf, with a check for $2,000, their portion of the proceeds. Amy and her husband actually worked with the Rotarians on two occasions...serving beer and sharing in the fun. Provided Information and Photo

Athena Middle School Technology Department Receives Grant Athena Middle School Technology Department is the lead school for Programming and receives up to $20,000 in funds for an I- Test, Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (I-TEST) grant from National Science Foundation for their computer science initiatives and their commitment to continue this work with students in the coming years. Mission of Grant: As the nation continues to expand the horizon of opportunities and possibilities through advances in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), the need for a more diverse and well-prepared STEM workforce is also expanding. The challenge of preparing citizens for the expanding workforce and the changing workplace environments calls for new innovations in STEM education. I-TEST is a research and development program that supports projects to promote PreK-12 student interests and capacities to participate in the STEM and information and communications technology (ICT) workforce of the future. The ITEST program supports research on the design, development, implementation, and selective spread of innovative strategies for engaging students in technology-rich experiences that: (1) increase student awareness of STEM occupations; (2) motivate students to pursue appropriate education pathways to STEM occupations; or (3) develop disciplin-
ary-based knowledge and practices, or promote critical thinking, reasoning skills, or communication skills needed for entering STEM workforce sectors. Athena Middle School Technology Teacher, Christine Bailey-Clar, has been working with the I -Test Grant team for the past few years and continues to support the STEM initiatives to bring students authentic learning experiences that reflect 21st Century careers and demands for a highly skilled workforce. Each student participant who completes the academy program expectations will receive a stipend for their involvement and have the opportunity to compete in the Summer Coding Academy challenge at Brockport University. We are honored to be a part of this program and look forward to seeing it grow next year. Provided Information and Photo
3rd Annual Jerry J. Helfer Youth Engagement Scholarship The Town of Greece Youth Board announced the official kick off the Jerry J. Helfer Youth Engagement Scholarship. Jerry Helfer was a man of exceptional character and virtue who always exhibited kindness to anyone he encountered. Throughout his life, Jerry dedicated his time and talents to making our community a better place. One of Jerry’s first positons in public service was being a member of the Greece Youth Board. Additionally, Jerry served as Town Councilman from 2004 until 2013 and as Deputy Supervisor from January 2014 until his untimely passing in July of the same year. The Jerry J. Helfer Youth Engagement Scholarship provides the Greece community with the opportunity to recognize a student that regularly upholds exemplary moral values, devotes time and energy into helping serve the Greece community, and consistently displays outstanding
leadership skills. “Jerry was an upstanding citizen, co-worker, and friend. It is an honor for me to announce this scholarship in memory of Jerry. His respect for public service and his love for learning are the foundations of this scholarship. Jerry loved his community and we want to be able to engage our youth to enable their participation in local government and community service. This will be our third year awarding this scholarship to a student from the Greece community who shares the same values of community service as Jerry did. I encourage all seniors in high school to apply for this scholarship and continue on Jerry’s lifelong legacy of public service and learning,” Supervisor Reilich said. From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich I hope everyone is staying safe and warm as we battle through another Western New York winter season! I would like to remind residents to allow for extra travel time during their commute and to be mindful of weather warnings. To kick off 2018, we have welcomed new officials to the Town of Greece, hosted an unveiling ceremony for the Greece Public Library’s Creation Station, and participated in a new business ribbon cutting ceremony for Ruby Gordon Furniture and Mattresses. Coming up this month, we will join our friends at the Community and Senior Center for their annual Valentine’s Day Party. We will also be hosting a new business ribbon-cutting ceremony for Wood Kettle Brewing. We started the New Year by welcoming new elected officials to the Town of Greece. We held a swearing-in ceremony for the new elected officials that will be serving the residents in the 2nd and 3rd Wards as well as our new Receiver of Taxes, Andrew Conlon. Serving the 2nd Ward will be William Murphy, who began his first term replacing former Councilman Brett Granville who was successful in his bid for Greece Town Justice. Murphy, a former Greece Police Officer and former Chief of the Holley Police Department, will bring his experience in public safety and community service to Town Hall. Another new elected official, Joshua Jensen, will be representing residents living in the 3rd Ward, a seat previously held by Andrew Conlon. Councilman Jensen has served on our Traffic Advisory Committee and is a member of Senator Joe Robach’s staff. Taking on his position early in order to
assist residents with the pre-payment of 2018 Town and County Taxes, Former Councilman and now Greece Receiver of Taxes Andrew Conlon has been a strong advocate for the residents in the 3rd Ward and will now be serving residents throughout the entire town. We now have a new addition to the Greece Public Library Main Branch: a Creation Station! Located directly behind the Information Desk, the Creation Station will be used for a variety of maker opportunities such as 3D printing, which will allow users to create tangible objects from a computer file. The space will also include 10 Cricut machines, which is a wireless design and cut system that allows users to create a variety of objects from paper, vinyl, poster board, fabric, and more. The Creation Station was made possible by a state grant secured by Senator Joe Robach. Library patrons (16 and over) are required to complete an orientation session and user agreement with a library staff member prior to utilizing the 3D printing service. Patrons can bring their own design on a portable drive or use the designs offered by the library. Please call the Greece Public Library at 225-8951 or visit their website at www.greecepubliclibrary.org to register for a scheduled orientation class. Be sure to check out a great new business in Greece: Ruby Gordon Furniture and Mattresses. We welcomed this new business to 140 Greece Ridge Center Drive earlier this month. With 81 years of experience in the designer furniture industry, Ruby Gordon is Rochester’s largest owned family furniture store. Ruby Gordon has over 300 room settings on display in the store and boasts a selection of living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, entertainment options, accent furniture, and mattresses. I wish Ruby Gordon owners Raymond Ruby and Aaron Ruby and their families and team great success in their new location! As always, I enjoy hearing feedback from residents about programming and other town related matters. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office
or visit our website.

Greece Police Explorers - A Taste of Law Enforcement for Teens by Tami Raco
Police Explorers is a career oriented program that gives young adults the opportunity to explore a career in law enforcement by working closely with law enforcement agencies and officers. Greece Police is one of the first agencies in the country to offer the Police Exploring Program. The program began in December of 1966. It was created to link boys and girls aged 14-20 with the Greece Police as a real-world introduction to a career in law enforcement and the criminal justice system. Officer Nick Marello, who is the Senior Advisor of the Greece Police Explorer Program, was a Police Explorer when he was a teen. Nick recalls having an interest in law enforcement since he was a young boy. He remembers walking around with a sheriff hat and always being enthralled by police television shows. He began police exploring with the Greece Police at the age of 14 and stayed with it until he was 19 years old when he began training as a part time Monroe County Sheriff deputy. Marello quickly moved into his full time police career when he was hired into the Greece Police Department in June of 2007. Marello says, “I knew exactly what I was getting into thanks to all of my experience in Police Explorers.” Nick found that by having the explorers back ground it not only helped him choose the right courses in college, but it also helped him prepare for the civil service tests and the entire process of getting into an agency. He knew how to conduct himself and he had the confidence necessary. Nick has many fond memories of his years in the Police Explorers program. He enjoyed the ride-along, and appreciates all the time given to him, and lunches with his advisors. He believes this program really helps reinforce the staples of life for teens such as good behavior, listening to parents and those in authority, following rules and making good decisions. Once Officer Marello accomplished his goal of becoming a police officer, he wanted to pay it forward by helping bring the same explorer opportunity to other teens. The Greece Police Explorers Program is supervised by Sgt. Jared René. The Explorer Advisors are Detective Jeff Dill, Detective Kevin Mack, Officer Mark Babcock, Officer Ashley Streeter, Officer Jeff Fraser and Officer Brittany Cu-
biotti-Micheli. The Explorers Advisors assist Officer Marello, the Senior Advisor. They strive to make the program fun and educational. In addition to learning about the various careers in law enforcement, the explorers also help with community events like the traffic control at the Annual Scouting for food collection, National Night Out event, the Strawberry Festival and Greece’s annual 4th of July Celebration. The Explorers meet twice a month at the new state of the art, Greece Police Headquarters. At each meeting the topics vary as they help the teens learn about policing. They experience police ride alongs while wearing a bullet resistant vest. The program also brings in a variety of guest speakers such as representatives from the Border Patrol, Retired Secret Service, Medical Examiner’s Office, first responders and the K-9 Unit. Nine Police Explorers that Officer Marello has worked with have gone on to careers as Greece Police Officers. Some other Explorers went on to other police agencies, the military and as first responders. Officer Marello believes even if the teen decides that a career in law enforcement is not for them, by putting forth good work ethic in the program they come out of it with some great life skills, improved self-confidence, and strong references to help them in whatever field they go into. To learn more about the Greece Police Explorers Program or to become a Police Explorer contact Officer Nick Marello at nmarello@greeceny.gov

ence high lake and pond waters again this year, DPW crews can close these valves, which will greatly reduce the need for pumps and help to keep our roads clear of flood waters and safe for residents. Town engineers and Town staff identified critical locations, designed plans, and are currently working alongside a contractor to oversee the installation. There are currently 11 locations which are the responsibility of the Town of Greece and where shut off valves are being installed, ranging in size from 8” to 30”. Installation of the first few pumps is already underway on Old Edgemere Drive between Wake Drive and Goodwin Park, where the channel connecting Long Pond empties into Lake Ontario. The valve systems are being installed below ground, which eliminates the possibility of an above ground structure being struck and damaged. This design was also chosen so that residents wouldn’t have mechanical structures on or near their properties. Town engineers are also completing plans to construct a raised berm structure by Edgemere Drive and the Kodak Pump Station, along Round Pond. During the flooding events last year, high waters in Round Pond caused it to overflow, flooding the residential properties and this section of Edgemere Drive. This was an area that saw the most severe flooding which caused Edgemere Drive to be completely closed for an extended period of time. During that time, DPW and National Guard troops constructed a temporary block and sandbag wall to hold back the high waters continued on page 31

of Round Pond. However, Supervisor Reilich recognized the need for a permanent structure and gave instructions for a new berm to be installed as a barrier to protect residents and ensure the road is safe for travel. “I will continue my efforts to employ preventive measures to help ensure water front residents are not exposed to the devastating damages that occurred last year and to do all we can to limit damages in the event of a repeat of last year’s rising waters” said Supervisor Reilich. “I am hopeful that by installing the new berm, along with the installation of shut-off valves and new piping, that damages will be significantly limited by potential floodwaters. In addition to these projects, I have also established plans once again for sandbags to be filled and provided to residents in need and for pumps to be deployed. I will continue taking measures to protect residents in the event that we experience high water levels again this year. I continue to reach out to agencies throughout New York State and I am also making certain the IJC is engaged and alerted to the already high levels” Reilich said.
