Greece Arcadia’s First Graduating Class Class of 1966 Celebrated their 50th Reunion by Barbara Burke
The 50th reunion of the 1966 graduating class from Greece Arcadia High School was celebrated in September 2016, it was a very special reunion. The Class of 1966 was the first class to graduate from the then newly opened Greece Arcadia High School. “We had a lot of firsts at Greece Arcadia. We started as 10th graders so we were like a senior class all through 10th, 11th and 12th grades. We were always the oldest students,” class member Marsha Hazen said. Being the first class in the new school presented many challenges. Fresh Air Workouts
by Tami Mungenast CPT CNWC Spring and summer bring us the long awaited sunshine and warmer temperatures. Not only does the nice weather improve our moods, but it helps to improve our physical condition. By taking your workout outdoors you can maximize your training benefits by burning calories, improving cardio vascular function, absorbing essential Vitamin D, and making your spirit happier. Aside from walking or running outdoors there are other fun ways to take your workout outdoors. •Cycling- Bicycling can be a great low impact or high impact workout based on the trail you choose. Choose one that is best for your condition. Long distance cycling burns a lot of calories. •Beach Runs/Walks- We are very fortunate to live near Lake Ontario providing great beach options. Walking or running on the sand burns calories. Be sure to wear supportive running shoes, turning an ankle is a risk when running on sand. Start slower than you would if you were running on pavement and work your way up as you get comfortable with the terrain. •Running Stairs/Bleachers- Running or walking up the bleachers is a great way to torch calories and work your glutes and quads. Most high schools and area colleges have tracks with bleachers. Walk or jog a lap and then run up the bleachers a few times. Repeat for desired exercise time. Be sure to walk down the bleacher for knee safety.
•Uphill Sprints- Another challenging but exciting cardio workout is uphill sprinting. This is similar to interval training with the high intensity sprints up the hill and the heart rate slow down as you walk down the hill. To perform this run up the hill then walk down the hill repeating the cycle until you reach your desired time of training. •Swimming- This form of cardio is often overlooked, if done at a higher intensity and longer duration it can give you a good workout. Swimming at the lake, on vacation or in a good sized pool is a great way to get your cardio in on hot days and stay cool. Start by swimming 15 minutes and add 5 minutes every week until you can reach 45 minutes straight. •Canoeing/Rowing- This is a great group activity. There are many local small marinas on inlets of the lake or the canal that offer canoe and row boat rentals. It is especially good for anyone with knee issues because it is primarily all upper body and still raises the heart rate. •Tennis- If you’re someone who likes racket sports tennis is a great option for burning up to 600 calories an hour. It’s also a good upper body workout. •Beach Volleyball- Another fun beach activity that counts as exercise. This activity is more stop and go so it’s great for someone looking for a less intensive cardio workout. •Hiking- If running is not your thing, take it to the trails. You get a good workout especially on longer hikes with hills. You can burn calories and work those calf muscles. •Jump Roping- My personal favorite. Purchase an inexpensive jump rope from a sporting goods store. Be sure to jump on a wood floor like a deck for less impact on the joints. Try jumping in small blocks of rotations like 50 rotations x 5 cycles and work your way up to 100 rotations x10. After each set take a short break to let your heart rate come down. This entire workout should only take about 30 minutes but will scorch up to 500 calories as well as really work the legs, arms and shoulder muscles. Freshen up your workout by taking it outdoors. The fresh air, sunshine and nature are sure to improve your mind and body.
Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration Planning Underway Micky Dolenz, the Voice of the Monkees, will take center stage as this year’s featured performance at the 4th Annual Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration. Local favorites Beatlemagic will be kicking off the night as the opening band. The morning will once again start with the 5K Freedom Run followed by the Scooby Stars and Stripes Kids Fun Run. Forms for registration for the 5K Freedom Run are available on the Town of Greece website www.greeceny.gov and the Run Sign Up website RunSignUp.com - search for Town of Greece Freedom Run 5k. Beginning in the early evening bounce houses, musical performances and delicious food vendors will pave the way to the concerts and then the grand finale of the evening will be the Fireworks Spectacular Display. “This is our fourth year of bringing this celebration to our community,” Reilich said. “I am honored to join with our Town Board members in hosting the 4th of July at the Greece Town Hall Campus for all of our families to enjoy.” As summer approaches visit www.greeceny.gov for more information and updates on this event. we all got reacquainted,” Marsha said. On Saturday morning, September 24th the group assembled at Greece Arcadia for a tour. They met in the auditorium where they were greeted and welcomed by current Greece Arcadia principal Gina Larsen. Greece Arcadia cheerleaders were the tour guides and were very interested in what high school life was like at Greece Arcadia during the 1960’s. “We all reminisced and marveled at the changes to the school. One big change is that there are now middle school students at the school and our library is part of the middle school. We were also given a tour of the new Science Wing. It was fun to be together and remember how the school was when we were the students,” Marsha said. After the tour, the group enjoyed lunch at Bill Gray’s Restaurant. On Saturday evening, the Formal Dinner was held at Ridgemont Country Club on West Ridge road in Greece. The evening consisted dinner, dancing, and “major socializing.” Class member Joe Janowicz addressed the group and spoke about their high school days. The evening concluded with class members suggesting a 55th reunion instead of waiting for the traditional 60th year reunion. “Many of us reconnected and renewed former friendships. We plan to all keep in touch through our Facebook page,” Marsha said. In March 2017, the Class of 1966 presented current Greece Arcadia principal Gina Larsen with a plaque commemorating their continued on page 12

Greece Arcadia’s First Graduating Class continued from page 11 50th High School reunion. The words on the plaque were written by class member Joe Janowicz with minor revisions by the reunion committee. The plaque reads: WE WERE THE FIRST… To walk these halls To open the lockers To learn from our teachers To celebrate our teams’ victories To perform in the school auditorium To create the school newspaper, yearbook, and traditions To hug and cry the day President Kennedy died
To create our lives from all we learned and experienced We were the first sophomores, juniors, and seniors… We were the FIRST graduating class of Greece Arcadia 1966. But we are not the LAST. We leave a legacy of FIRSTS for all future classes to build on To find a way to give back and make the world a better place. As you walk in OUR footsteps, the class of 1966 wishes you all the best. A New Direction Announced For Greece Performing Arts Society New Logo, Theatre Company, Community Partnerships and More An Expansion in the Town of Greece and Downtown Rochester Since 1969, the Greece Performing Arts Society (GPAS) has had a strong presence in the Town of Greece providing opportunities for hundreds of community residents to grow as musicians and artists while performing throughout the community to thousands of appreciative audiences. On April 2, 2017 at a GPAS press conference and concert, Board President Eric Vaughn Johnson announced the “Next Chapter” for the GPAS including a new direction with a fresh new look, a new theatre company, several new community partnerships, and plans to expand performance opportunities within Greece and in the Greater Rochester area. The full 2017 performing schedule is available at GreecePerformingArts.org. “We are thrilled to be giving more life to one of the oldest established arts organizations in New York State,” said Johnson. “The talent in these groups is outstanding. Each group is a gem in our community and now it is time to make these GPAS groups shine even more! This new direction will provide more opportunities for the performers and expand entertainment choices for audiences to ultimately strengthen visibility of the arts in our community.” Recently the GPAS Board took on a branding initiative and introduced a new logo. The existing logo was created in the 1990’s and used inconsistently. “We wanted to keep all of the positive attributes of the organization, including elements of the former logo, but it was time for a face lift,” said Vice President Jenessa Wheeler. The new GPAS logo, created by Pearlman Graphic Design, highlights the bold stance for the organization while keeping music notes to emphasize a key component of the arts. Johnson announced the reopening of GPAS’s Greece Theatre Company under the artistic direction of wellknown Rochester actress, Janine Mercandetti. The theatre
company will showcase performers of all ages in a variety of different theatrical genres, kicking off with the Upstate New York regional premier of Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Mercandetti will be serving as GPAS’s new Artistic Director bringing the presence of GPAS to Downtown Rochester. The Hunchback of Notre Dame will feature Rochester adult performers alongside GPAS’s Choral Society. The production will be performed at the new Lyric Theatre Main Stage, on East Avenue in Downtown Rochester from October 20-29, 2017. Rotary Exchange Student Program Greece Rotary is searching for families interested in hosting a Rotary Exchange student for the coming school year. The club has been privileged to host exceptional students annually, most recently from Denmark, Hungary, Chile, and France. The student lives with a local family and attends a local high school. To give the student the broadest exposure to American culture, the goal is to have 3 families who each host for 3 months. The Rotary Exchange program is unique in that it provides tremendous support to the student and the host families through the involvement of the local Rotary Club. The program begins with the student’s arrival in mid-August and extends through the 2017-18 school year. It is a wonderful opportunity to connect with the world beyond Rochester and learn about another culture. If interested in hosting a student in your home, contact Rotarian Larry S. Evarts, Greece Rotary Youth Exchange Officer at levartsoo1@rochester.rr.com. Provided Information

Arcadia “Greece Cup” Champs by Barbara Burke
The Greece Arcadia Boys Golf Team won the Greece Cup for the first time on Monday, April 10, 2017 at Ridgemont
Country Club on West Ridge Road in Greece. Started in 2010, the Greece Cup is a friendly competition between the boys golf teams from Arcadia, Athena, Olympia and Odyssey High Schools. In the previous seven years the cup has been won, each year, by the Greece Athena team. In the tradition of giving back to the Greece community, Ridgemont Country Club has graciously hosted the Greece Cup Tournament at no charge to the school every year since its inception in 2010. Leading the charge this year for the Arcadia Titans were sophomore Tyler Snedden with a 43 and senior Rhys Levesque with a 48. Arcadia Golf team coach Ed Patt says, “Arcadia is off to a 4-1 start, its best in a few years. They have a good balance of talent within the grade levels. In the top six players there are three seniors, Rhys Levesque, Joe Vrielynck, and Zack Sechrist, two sophomores, Tyler Snedden and Cameron Misiurewicz and an 8th grader, Dylan Tompkins.” Coach Patt attributes the success of this group to team work. “We have a great group of kids that love to play golf. They encourage each other and help each other out, and they are open to suggestions. They are fun to coach,” Patt says. The team is made up of students from 8th Grade to Seniors. They play 16 matches in the season leading up to the Monroe County Tournament in May where top players compete for a spot in the Tournament of Champions and Section 5 Tournament. Photos by Karen Fien

Employees are considered family and this tradition is passed on to their customers as well. RIT Math Program for 8th Grade Girls July 17-21, 2017 RIT College of Science hosts award-winning SMASH program A summer program at Rochester Institute of Technology will introduce middle-school girls to a world driven by mathematics. The RIT Summer Math Applications in Science with Hands-on experience for girls, or SMASH, will show rising eighth graders the power of mathematical modeling. Teams of girls will use math to decode mysteries in science and other real-world puzzles, while learning about future math-based careers. Participants will also gain experience presenting their ideas at the end of the session. The program will be held in the RIT College of Science 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. July 17-21. Daily drop-off will start at 8:30 a.m., with evening pick-up between 4-5 p.m. Attendance is limited to 40 campers. “SMASH is designed to increase middle-school girls’ engagement and interest in STEM (science, technology, engi-
facts, maintenance, schedules and safety. Beverages and snacks are provided along with goodie bags and door prizes. The seminars are held to keep female customers informed when making decisions about their cars. Customer Service and Satisfaction are priorities at Ridgeway Sunoco. They measure the satisfaction of their customers by the loyalty of returning customers. Generations have passed through their doors. “Our customers are treated as part of an extended family. Most customers are known not only by what car they drive, but also by their name. Hard work and a caring attitude is what you will find at Ridgeway Sunoco. We have laughed and also cried with our customers, it is important to let them know that we care,” Fusilli says. When Tom Fusilli started the business 39 years ago he knew he needed a new and unique idea to stand out from the other gasoline stations located at the intersection of Ridgeway and Long Pond Roads, an intersection that was called “gasoline alley” because of the abundance of stations at the intersection. His idea was to paint some tires white and put them on the roof to spell “TIRES” in order to attract the attention of cars driving by. Ridgeway Sunoco became known as the building with the tires on the roof. His idea worked. Ridgeway Sunoco’s service hours are Monday thru Friday 8AM5PM and Saturday 8AM to 12PM. Maki, a member of RIT Women in Science, developed the program with a grant from RIT’s College of Science in response to the nation’s drop in math and science rankings reported by the U.S. Department of Education. The SMASH program began in 2014 and is affiliated with RIT’s CASTLE, Center for Advancing STEM Teaching, Learning and Evaluation. SMASH registration is $250 and includes lunch, snacks, recreational activities and T-shirts. Need-based scholarships are available from the RIT College of Science and donor gifts. Tea Time at the Beach
Take a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and head on over to the Robach Community Center, 180 Beach Ave., Charlotte, on Sunday, May 7, 2017 for the tenth annual Tea at the Beach hosted by Petra Place Counseling Services of Greece. Set for 2:30-5 p.m., the afternoon will include a catered high tea, an artisan showcase, performances by local dance troupes and musicians, raffles and door prizes. Each guest will receive a gift to take home. A special highlight of the event will be a spring and summer fashion show presented by Chico’s. Afternoon tea was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840. The Duchess would become hungry around four o’clock in the afternoon. The evening meal in her household was served fashionably late at eight o’clock, thus leaving a long period of time between lunch and dinner. The Duchess asked that a tray of tea, bread and butter (some time earlier, the Earl of Sandwich had had the idea of putting a filling between two slices of bread) and cake be brought to her room during the late afternoon. This became a habit of hers and she began inviting friends to join her. This pause for tea became a fashionable social event. During the 1880’s upper-class and society women would change into long gowns, gloves and hats for their afternoon tea which was usually served in the drawing room between four and five o’clock. Traditional afternoon tea consists of a selection of dainty sandwiches, including thinly sliced cucumber sandwiches, scones served with clotted cream and preserves. Cakes and pastries are also served. Tea grown in India or Ceylon is poured from silver tea pots into delicate bone china cups. Nowadays however, in the average suburban home, afternoon tea is likely to be just a biscuit or small cake and a mug of tea, usually produced using a teabag. The Petra Place Tea at the Beach was begun in the early days of the Greece counseling center, and over the years, proceeds from the annual rite of spring have helped to support the many programs offered by the center. According to Stacey Reed MacGregor, LCSW, executive director of Petra Place, “We are seeing more and more

people coming through the doors at Petra Place. Proceeds from the tea will help us to continue to keep the doors open and work towards our dream in the making of expanding our walls someday to provide expanded community outreach programming and serve more people in need of these critical services.” She added, “Our goal is to ensure that the abused child or the family at risk of becoming broken will not be denied the opportunity to receive loving counseling and spiritual support. When the community supports love and healing, we believe miracles can happen.” Located at 888 Long Pond Road, Petra Place is a 503(c) non-profit agency which offers mental health services on a sliding scale for the uninsured, as well as provides community outreach as needs are identified. Catering Menu Buffet #1 - Roasted Chicken, Sausage, Peppers and Onions, Baked Ziti, Roasted Potatoes, Tossed Green Salad with Dressing, Rolls & Butter The Overtime Grill is shrinking in size. Soon they will be turning the key over to new owners for the Dewey Avenue location but still maintaining the N. Greece Restaurant. “It’s definitely time to slow down and enjoy life”, says Lisa Bowles, owner and operator for the past 15 years. “I look forward to helping out the new owners get started. I see the excitement in their eyes as it was for me over a decade ago”. Lisa’s presence will be seen much more now at the N. Greece location. There is a new menu coming soon which she describes as, AWESOME! They have added more craft beers including Thousand Island Wines to their drink menu. The Daily Specials are worth the visit. There is a different special every day of the week. Tuesday is their $2 Day with $2 Tacos, $2 Well Drinks and $2 Margaritas. Wednesday is described as one of their biggest nights with Buy One Get One Drinks from 3pm-5pm and then $5 Big A*** Burger Night from 5pm-9pm just to name a few. You can check out all of Overtime’s specials on their website Theovertimegrill.com. If you’re looking for sports, they have 6 TV’s throughout the small but spacious bar/restaurant with all the games on. They also sponsor dart and pool leagues. Just sign up with CAP Amusement to be a part of their league. If it’s catering you are looking for, The Overtime Grill has that too. Lisa will help you create your own special menu or you can choose one of the four standard menus listed on their website, from Dinners to Hors d’oeuvres, they have it all. Come on down and see what Greece and Hilton are talking about. Lisa and the staff are working Overtime to give you a Great Time!
