- A Novel by Diane Rivoli Chapter 30 LICENSE FOR RELEASE by Diane Rivoli Pam got her a little pot of hot tea, told her to just sit for a while, told her she was in no condition to drive right now. And Dixie did as she was told because she knew Pam was right. She felt withered inside, as dry and brown as the corn stalks in the fields she had passed as she drove, as lifeless as the brown leaves skittering along the sidewalk outside, blown by the October winds and crushed into tiny crumbs under people’s feet. The restaurant was starting to get busy again and Dixie watched with depressed, glossless eyes as Pam and the other servers bustled about. She slowly sipped at her tea but it did nothing to comfort or warm her. The ability to be comforted did not seem to exist for her anymore. It was just something to do while she tried to compose herself enough to be able to leave. The tea was gone. It must be time to go. Dixie stood, fumbling in her purse for her wallet. Pam hadn’t given her the bill yet and she glanced around Fitzpatrick’s trying to locate her. She was nowhere to be seen. Well, she’d just leave a ten dollar bill on the table. That should be more than enough to cover a cup of soup, some tea and a tip. Suddenly Pam was at her side, placing her hand gently on Dixie’s shoulder, taking the ten dollar bill out of Dixie’s hand and stuffing it back into Dixie’s purse. “Hey, Honey. You know what? My shift’s over and I really don’t think you should be alone right now. How about we spend the rest of the afternoon together? I could take you to my house, put on a pot of coffee or something. We could sit and chat. What do you think?” Dixie hesitated for a moment, but the look on Pam’s face was so kind, so thoughtful and concerned, so honest. And Dixie didn’t want to be alone. Didn’t want to get in her car and drive with despair as her only companion for more than an hour. Only to arrive at the apartment that she hadn’t been to in three weeks, still alone. And she would remember that the last person that had been in the apartment with her had been Greg. Greg, with his guitar and his green t-shirt and his songs. Greg ….. “Okay. That sounds nice. I’ll go.” The words popped out of Dixie’s mouth quickly, interrupting her thoughts, trying to prevent them from going in a direction she did not want them to go. “Good. Come on, I’ll drive. It won’t hurt anything to leave your car here at Fitzpatrick’s for a while.” And Pam led Dixie over to a shiny black Firebird with red leather seats. It was a sleek beauty and if sorrow hadn’t been squeezing Dixie’s heart in a vise, she would have thought the car was really something, totally awesome. Pam lived in a dove grey house with white shutters and a goldenrod yellow door on Elm Street. The first thing she did was show Dixie around her yard. Flowers were everywhere. Pam said they were winding down for fall but to Dixie they were more beautiful than anything she had ever seen. Pam pointed and named them all. There were marigolds, zinnias, yarrow, twinspur, hydrangea, lavender, goldenrod, monkshood, dahlias, asters and every color of chrysanthemum you could think of. Dixie surprised herself, and Pam, by being able to rattle off the names of at least half of this dazzling assortment continued on page 16

continued from page 12

right along with Pam. She must have learned more by weeding her mother’s flowers than she realized. Then Pam took Dixie inside and showed her the moss green room with the baby animal curtains. Pam was pregnant! Although, you couldn’t tell from looking at her yet. She was due in April! And this was to be the baby’s room. She showed Dixie the yellow rubber ducky pillow that her husband, Boyd, thought he had gotten for the baby but that Pam had commandeered for herself instead. She dragged out some photo albums and showed Dixie pictures of what a dump her now beautiful house had been before she and her husband had fixed it up. Dixie couldn’t believe the difference. It was an amazing transformation. While they were sitting on the couch looking at the pictures, the front door opened, and Pam’s husband walked in. Dixie could tell he was surprised to see her there. He gave Pam a quizzical look out of the corner of his eye and the look on his face said ‘Who is this stranger?’ He reminded Dixie of her father for some reason although she couldn’t say exactly why. He had to be ten years younger than her dad. Maybe it was his smile. Pam seemed to glow at the sight of him. “Hi, Boyd! How was work? This is my friend Dixie. I’m showing her pictures of our house, before and after!” “Hi! Nice to meet you.” And he extended his hand to Dixie. “I didn’t even know Pam had a friend named Dixie!” “Well, I’m not really Pam’s friend,” Dixie tried to explain as she shook Boyd’s hand. “I’ve eaten in Fitzpatrick’s a couple times so we kind of know each other from there. But I’m here because… Well, Pam’s just so nice and I guess I kind of needed help because I was…. Well, I was crying and ….” And then, there she was, cry-

ing again. She tried to continue, to let Boyd know the reason his wife had felt it necessary to bring home a teary faced stranger. But the words got wrapped in her tears and tangled in her tongue. She couldn’t do it. Not twice in one day. “Dixie’s having a tough time right now, Boyd,” Pam explained as she handed Dixie a tissue and hugged her shoulders. “Life has not been kind to her lately. Is it ok for me to tell him about it, Honey?” And Dixie nodded yes. It seemed odd to hear her story out of someone else’s mouth, from someone else’s perspective. She dried her tears and listened along with Boyd as if she didn’t already know what the outcome would be. And for some reason it gave Dixie a catharsis she desperately needed. No one knew quite what to say when Pam finished talking. They just sat, looking at each other with sad eyes, lost in their own thoughts. Then Pam hopped up, got a pot of coffee going and insisted that Dixie stay for dinner. Boyd did most of the cooking. He grilled chicken breasts and roasted potatoes. He made popovers. ‘Pam’s favorite!’ he said. And Pam made a salad with avocados, tomatoes and fresh mozzarella. While they ate, they talked about Dixie and they talked about Greg. They talked about life and love and mistakes that people make. They talked about death and about grief.

Healthy Living Inspiration Five year old Greece girl living with Type 1 Diabetes is a source of inspiration by Tami Raco Kaydence Wade is a Kindergartener at Paddy Hill Elementary School. She is the daughter of Lysa and Brendan Wade of Greece, and sister to her brothers; twin Ben and big brother Jared. Kaydence has provided a daily inspiration to many on how to thrive while facing an incurable disease. Lysa had a healthy pregnancy and delivery of her twins Kaydence and Ben. They were happy, healthy babies until at approximately 8 months everything in the Wade family abruptly changed. One afternoon, Kaydence became noticeably fussy. Her Mom had thought maybe the teething was the cause. But after a rough night, Kaydence became lethargic and developed an unusually heavy breathing pattern. Kaydence’s parents took her to Strong Emergency Department. Kaydence was quickly diagnosed as having type 1 diabetes. She spent 5 days in the hospital as her family learned as much as they could about this disease that in a blink of an eye invaded their healthy daughter. The cause of Type 1 Diabetes is unknown and currently there is no cure. It isn’t entirely clear what triggers the development of this disease. Researchers do know that genes play a role; there is an inherited susceptibility. However, something must set off the immune system, causing it to turn against itself and leading to the development of type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, and is also known as juvenile diabetes. Only 5% of people with diabetes have this form of the disease. In type 1 diabetes the body does not produce insulin. The body breaks down carbohydrates (the sugars and starches you eat) into a simple sugar called glucose, which it uses for energy. Insulin is a hormone that a healthy pancreas produces to get glucose from the bloodstream into the cells of the body. Despite active research, type 1 diabetes has no cure. But it can be managed. With proper treatment, people with type 1 diabetes can expect to live longer, healthier lives than those with the disease did in the past. Kaydence is a living example of that. On the outside you would not even know she lives with a chronic disease. But what many may not realize about this vibrant, happy 5 year old is that she has a continuous glucose monitor sensor that reads her glucose levels every 5 minutes. It’s predictive and collects data on Kaydence’s body and schedule to help keep her levels healthy. She also has an insulin pump that sends her body the necessary insulin. Kaydence’s Grandma makes her pretty belts to hold her pump. She takes Kaydence to the fabric store and lets her pick out fabrics to make the belts. In addition to medical tools that help her, Kaydence’s parents keep things on hand to help correct the sugar levels if needed. Excitement, hormones, physical activity and temperature can affect Kaydence’s glucose levels. If her levels get too low she will have a few

fruit snacks or glucose tablets. If they are too high it can be corrected with more water. In the event there is an emergency, Kaydence wears a special bracelet to identify her as having Type 1 Diabetes. Her diet is relatively low carb to improve her insulin management. She does have occasional treats like cupcakes. Her mom feels pretty fortunate that Kaydence actually likes to eat healthy and doesn’t have much of a “sweet tooth.” When Kaydence was asked her favorite food to eat she answered, “I love corn, Pirate Booty Pop Corn and Pink Lemonade.” In this generation as so many kids are become increasing less active with the use of video games and electronics, the Wade family is an inspiration on how to raise a family with fun, physical activity, even with the affliction of this dis-

ease. They love to swim, bicycle, play on their zip line, and participate in running events. Kaydence began playing soccer at the age of three as well as dancing and running. She began gymnastics at the age of four. When asked which was her favorite activity she replied, “Running because I can do it with my brothers.” This summer Kaydence and her brothers ran in the Scooby Stars and Stripes Fun Run which was part of the Greece 4th of July Freedom 5k. After the race Kaydence was named an honorary member of The Rochester Running Heroes and was given a t-shirt. The running club is for runners who manage a chronic condition that requires medical devices in them. She will be formally inducted in a ceremony at the end of September at the Greece Town Board meeting. Kaydence’s family is very active in JDRF Diabetes Foundation and has a team in their annual fundraiser/walk. Lysa feels this is so important, “Our hope is that the research will someday find a cure.” The annual JRDF walk is the

How to make exercise an enjoyable part of your life by Tami Mungenast Personal Trainer, Nutrition Coach

You probably have already heard all the great reasons why you should exercise, ranging from heart health to mood support and weight loss. There are so many exercise videos and articles out there that we should all be experts by now! But for some reason knowing how and why to exercise still seems to not be enough to get people to start or more importantly stick to an exercise program. Here are a few tips on how to make exercise a more fun and less intimidating part of your lifestyle. Many people struggle with getting started on an exercise

To be part of Kaydence’s crew or to donate visit http://www2. jdrf.org/goto/KaysKrew. The family is also active with local support groups which offer meetings, social media groups and day camps. Camp Healthy Hope is a summer day camp that Kaydence attends, and where she met one of her best friends. Kaydence’s Mom feels strongly that it’s her and her husband’s responsibility to help support Kaydence in any way possible to “help her be herself.” Lysa takes the burden off of Kaydence by managing the health issues and never letting the diabetes limit her daughter. Instead she feels, “It gives Kaydence strength. She inspires us every day with how well she manages her illness not only physically but emotionally.” For more information on Type 1 Diabetes visit www.jdrf. org. A busy schedule, aches and pains and lack of energy can make exercise challenging, but the biggest barriers are the mental barriers. Lacking self-confidence and feeling intimidated can quickly fan out the motivation flames that once burned hot. Discouragement and disappointment often lead to giving up. Here are a few tips on how to push through the mental barriers: • Be compassionate with yourself. Research shows that self-compassion increases the likelihood that you will succeed in any endeavor. Stop the negative talk and don’t compare yourself to others or to yourself ten years ago. If you beat yourself up you will beat out the will power to continued on page 20

stick to it. Look at your past mistakes or detours as opportunities to better understand yourself and grow from it. • Realistic expectations. Gaining weight, increasing body fat and losing muscle and endurance does not happen overnight. You’re not going to lose the weight or transform your body over night or even in a week. Look for the small progress cues... more energy, better sleep, alertness, clothes fitting better. Focus on your consistency rather than immediate gratification. • Ditch the mentality “all or nothing.” You do not have

to work out every day or spend countless hours in a gym. There is a way to produce great results without the “no pain no gain” approach. In fact, adding small amounts of exercise or physical activity to your week can have a positive impact on your physical and mental health. • Enlist the help of friends, small group support or a Personal Trainer. In my ten plus years of personal training I have found the best results of consistency come to those who have a support network. A small group workout with a few people of the same gender and similar lifestyle seems to produce the best long term results. It provides enjoyment, social interaction and physical fitness improvements. So find a friend or small group to help solidify your lifestyle changes. Healthy wishes!

I want to retire early. What should I do to start planning now? The average American retires at about age 63, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. But what if you don’t want to wait until 63 or so? Can you afford to retire early? Possibly – but it could be challenging. Still, you may be able to boost your chances by following these suggestions: First, research the costs involved in early retirement. Will you downsize from your current home? How will you pay for health care until you’re old enough for Medicare? Also, you’ll probably need to boost the amount you invest in your 401(k), IRA and other retirement accounts. And you may need to adjust your portfolio mix to provide more growth opportunities – keeping in mind that this may entail greater investment risk. Here’s one more idea: Cut your debt load. If you want to retire early, you need to be diligent about eliminating as many debts as possible. And, most importantly, do everything early: Plan early, invest early and lower your debts early. Getting a jump on these activities can help turn your early retirement dreams into reality. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

I am a hunter and enjoy live music. How important is it to protect my ears? Some Hearing loss is not preventable. Aging and genetics contribute to a decline in hearing, but one thing we can control is noise exposure. Noise induced hearing loss is 100% preventable. A key indicator is if it’s too loud to hear someone’s voice, then it’s probably too loud and hearing protection should be used. At Hart Hearing Centers, we have a variety of ear plugs for musicians, hunters and everyday use. They are easy to use, portable and effective. Check them out on our website or stop by one of our 5 locations. We want everyone to love what they hear, so protect your ears! Melissa Cushman, Au.D, Doctor of Audiology

David Nail at Bands At Barnard Concert Series with such feeling. I went out and bought all of his music. I wanted to have that pure sound in my own music. I think I was the only 18 or 19 year old into Glen Campbell at that age. KF: Do you write your own music? DN: I wrote about half the songs on my albums. I also wrote a song performed by Dave Barnes, an acoustic pop, R&B musician/singer. KF: How has being a dad changed the writing experience for you? DN: My twins are 8 months old, a boy (Lawson) and a girl (Lillian) their birth has completely changed my life. I wrote the song “Babies” after the twins were born, it is on the new “Fighter” album. I am still in awe over the whole experience of being a dad. My wife and I had figured out how to deal with my tours and being away when it was the two of us, now with the twins I spend my time with them when I am home, wanting them to know I am their dad and how much I love them, because in the next couple weeks I will be back on the road again, and will have to remind them again when I return that I am your dad and I don’t want them to forget who I am. What I said on stage came from the heart. I love being with my wife and children, they are my whole world. When I am touring and I come to places like Greece, New York and I can see all my fans and feel that love of my music from them, that is what made me want to be a singer.

Country music singer David Nail performed to a huge crowd at the Bands at Barnard on Wednesday, August 24, 2016 as part of the Barnard Fire Department’s Summer Concert Series. The bands Reporter and Atlas also performed that evening. The Bands at Barnard concert series provides an awesome, affordable outdoor music experience for the family each Wednesday evening during the summer months. All the proceeds go to the Barnard Fire Department. For more information on The Bands at Barnard go to www.barnardfire.org. After the show, singer David Nail sat down with GreeceNewsNY.com photojournalist Karen Fien to answer a few questions. KF: When did you start playing music? DN: I starting playing the drums at 4 or 5 years old until 5th grade. My dad was a band director for the high school, so I was surrounded by music. I met a friend who played the drums really well in sixth grade and I switched to the guitar then, because I wanted to start my own band. KF: Which artists inspired you? DN: My dad not only was a band director, he was also in the choir and a band of his own. He brought the love of music into my life. I liked Motown early on and British Invasion bands (my dad’s influence), it wasn’t until my teens that I realized there was other music out there. I watched Glen Campbell on television and thought he sang so pure and

Greece Resident is Award Winning Wine Maker by Tami Raco Randy Agness is part of six generations of Agness families who have lived in Greece. Randy is a graduate of Greece Olympia High School, Class of 1980. After graduation he pursued his goal of becoming a chemist. He completed his undergraduate in Chemistry at St. Bonaventure University and went on to work the past 30 years as a Plastics Engineer and in Process and Quality Control. Although Randy didn’t begin as a wine enthusiast, early in his career his work sent him to parts of the world that were renowned wine regions. After exploring these regions and their wines his wife encouraged him to learn how to make his own wine. Randy began dabbling in wine making as an amateur which led him to take formal classes in wine making at Finger Lakes Community College. He took classes part-time at night while still maintaining his career as a Chemist. In his first three years as an amateur winemaker he produced 10 different varieties of wine using grapes exclusively from the Finger Lakes region. In addition to taking wine making courses and crafting small batches of wine to hone his techniques, he also became a well-known wine journalist across the Finger Lakes region. Randy has published over 100 articles which helped him to make important contacts within the Finger Lakes wine making community and beyond. Randy’s wines quickly began winning regional and national medals beginning at the Bronze level, advancing to Silver Medals and then Gold Medals. His Riesling won a Double Gold Medal at the INDY International Wine Competition receiving the highest score possible. The INDY is the largest scientifically organized and independent wine competition in the United States. With the national recognition, receiving over 30 awards as an amateur wine maker, he was encouraged to take his wine making talent to the next level which is commercial production. Randy formed a partnership with his friend from St. Bo-

naventure University David Lanzillo to form Agness Wine Cellars. Lanzillo is a wine enthusiast with a strong background in corporate marketing and communications. Coupled with Randy’s chemistry background and wine making success, this team was destined for success. Agness Wine Cellars teamed with Seneca Lake Winery Zugibe Vineyards. At Zugibe Vineyards Agness Cellars produced its first commercial wine. It is a 2015 Semi-Dry Riesling. The vintage run is comprised of all Riesling grapes from three separate harvests in October 2015. The high quality grapes Agness Wine Cellars Gold are from both the East and Medal Semi-Dry Riesling West side of Seneca Lake. The made from grapes grown in blend of Riesling grapes from the Finger Lakes region. these regions gives the wine its complexity. Just over 100 cases were produced and bottled in March 2016. The first case of wine was purchased by Former Lt. Governor Robert Duffy. Ten percent of the wine was used for charity purposes such as the Isaiah Hospice House fundraiser. Fifty area wine retailers and restaurants quickly reserved the rest of the production. Many retail locations in Greece carry the Semi-Dry Riesling including Latta Long Pond Liquors and Parkway Liquor. The bottle retails for under $20. Agness Wine Cellars proudly carries their Irish heritage on their labels and in their operations. Labels feature Irish symbols such as the Celtic scrip and four clovers. Agness’ son and daughter helped designed the labels. At wine tastings you can learn about the Irish history and its impact on wine making. The wine has already been submitted and scored by both Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast with excellent scores for this new wine cellar. It is being very well received by both experts in the wine industry as well as wine enthusiasts. The entire inventory is often sold out at tastings. Agness looks forward to the 2016 harvest as he plans for “bigger and more production and increasing distribution from Buffalo to Syracuse.” For more information on Agness Wine Cellars visit www.agnesswinecellars.com. The Greece Ridge Lions Club is holding a euchre tournament fund raiser on Saturday, October 15, 2016. It will be in the basement of the Messiah Lutheran Church, 4301 Mt. Read Blvd, Greece, at the corner of Mt. Read Blvd and English Road. Sign-in starts at 12:30, and games start at 1:00. There is no pre-registration. There is a $15 entry fee, which includes snacks, pizza, and soft drinks. Pizza will be served between games 5 & 6 (around 2:45 p.m.) There are prizes for the top four scores at the end of the eight games. The money raised from the club’s euchre events goes to support the Greece Ridge Lions’ community projects, like the medical equipment loan closet and Thanksgiving food baskets for the needy. If you are interested in learning more about Lions, would like to volunteer your time at the loan closet, or would like to learn about the other services provided by the Lions, call the club at 340-7105. Meetings are generally held on the second and fourth Wednesday evenings of each month, and all prospective members are welcome.

Lions are the largest service club organization in the world, and there’s a local club right here in Greece, New York. Many people are aware that Lions collect used eyeglasses and hearing aids for the needy. There’s a drop box for these items in the lobby of the Greece Public Library. But Lions do much more. The Greece Ridge Lions have donated and delivered Thanksgiving food baskets, sent Christmas stockings to soldiers, assisted the library in purchasing large print and audio books, supplied radios as part of WXXI’s Reachout Radio program, participated in parties for senior citizens living in adult homes, and given to the community in many other ways. The Greece Ridge Lions Club assists Greece residents with their temporary medical equipment needs. Volunteers from the Greece Ridge Lions Club maintain a medical equipment loan closet, which houses items such as crutches, walkers, wheelchairs, transport chairs, shower chairs, transfer benches, and commodes. Items are available for loan to residents of Greece and Charlotte. There is no charge for this service, but donations, of both cash and equipment, are greatly appreciated. The loan closet is in need of more wheelchairs, transport chairs, transfer benches, and especially knee walkers. Due to the great demand for these items, the club sometimes has to turn away prospective borrowers. At the present time, the club only owns one knee walker, and could really use a couple more. To donate any of these four types of equipment, or if you need to borrow any medical equipment, call the Greece Ridge Lions Club at (585) 340-7105. This number connects directly to a voicemail

From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich With summer having come and gone, we are pleased with the amount of work that has been done at Town Hall. Both the Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration and the Summer Concerts at the Hall were a tremendous success. Both events drew thousands of people to the Town Hall Campus. Since, May 1st over 10,000 residents have signed up for their free passes to use the Wild over Waters Zone. This year alone we had over 22,000 visits to the Wild Over Waters Zone between Memorial Day and Labor Day almost doubling last year’s total visits. New this month, I am pleased to announce that the Town has official opened registration for the newly constructed Braddocks Bay Lodge located at Braddock Bay Park. The new lodge is complete with a full kitchen sink, stove, microwave and refrigerator, tables and chairs to seat up to 99 guests, covered and open porches. The Lodge is situated among plenty of open space in the park which includes a playground, walking trails, hawk watch and tremendous views of our beautiful Braddock’s Bay. If you are interested in reserving this lodge or any other lodge in our Parks lodge rental system please call 723-2425 or visit www.greeceny.gov for further details. Over at the Community and Senior Center, staff is preparing for our Town’s annual Family Halloween Party taking place on Friday October 28th from 6:00 – 8:00pm. The event will feature a Haunted House, dance party, crafts, games and food. Make sure to stop by for an evening of family fun. For more information please contact the Community and Senior Center at 723-2425. If haven’t already make sure to pick up a copy of our Town’s Strive Guide which features all the great programs available for Greece residents to enjoy throughout the fall season. As always, if I can be of assistance to you in any town related matters, please do not hesitate to contact my office directly at 225-2000.
