Churches “Come Together” by Tami Raco
On Sunday, August 27, 2017 Lakeshore Community Church hosted their 11th Annual ROC Service and Picnic. The theme of the service was “Come Together.” In light of the racial, ethnic, and cultural divisions that exist in our country today, five local congregations came together united in one church. Churches in attendance were Ark of Jesus Ministries, Congregation Shema Israel, New Way Christian Faith Center, Victorious Living Christian Life Center, and Lakeshore Community Church. Church leaders and members gathered under one roof to worship together and stand united in unified faith as one family without barriers. This annual event began when Pastor Vince DiPaola from Lakeshore Community Church met Bishop Dave Singelton pastor of the Ark of Jesus at a prayer gathering 20 years ago. The two pastors became very close friends and went on to be guest pastors at each others churches. The seed of the unified service was planted in the relationship between these two pastors. Each year the event has grown through interconnection among the local church communities. As other churches heard of the service they expressed an interest in particicontinued on page 22

pating. According to Pastor Vince, “As additional churches joined the event it has become even richer and more impactful to both our suburban and city communities. The service allows us to model unity despite any differences in our churches, cultures or ethnicities.” The churches involved felt the “Come Together” theme was very timely. The service and picnic are a living testament to help model the unified approach. Every church had their Pastor or Rabbi speak and they also had their own music on stage. “We learn from each other how to do church, we encourage each other as we help each other through the year and we deepen the breadth of our unity as people from all the congregations becoming friends,” Pastor Vince said. The service was well attended on the beautiful end of summer day by nearly 900 people. The day concluded with an outdoor picnic and mixer where families from the various churches shared in a BBQ lunch and kids activities. “The doors to our churches are open wide to anyone who wants to know more about the love of God,” Pastor Vince said.

Greece Historical Society Fall Programs •Blanche Stuart Scott: America’s First Aviatrix Portrayed Maureen Whalen October 10, 2017 • 7:00 p.m. at the Greece Public Library Blanche Stuart Scott, who was born in Greece, was a pioneer in the automotive and aviation industries. In September 1910, only weeks after completing a cross-county drive through the United States, she became the first American woman to fly an airplane. Come “meet” this fascinating woman and hear in her own words about her flying adventures. Maureen Whalen will be interpreting Blanche in this program based on recordings of interviews with Blanche and excerpts from her unpublished autobiography. •There Goes the Neighborhood” The Rochester Racial Uprising of 1964 November 14, 2017 • 7:00 p.m. at the Greece Public Library Presented by Verdis LeVar Robinson In this interactive presentation the goal is to virtually tour, relive, and retell the historical transformation of an old 7th Ward in Rochester and to study the effects of racism and discriminatory policies and practices, which is argued to have caused the uprisings. With this understanding, we can gain insight in the recent uprisings in Ferguson and Baltimore in addition to understanding urban uprisings in general to inform anti-violence and anti-poverty efforts in New York State. (A Public Scholars program of Humanities New York) The Greece Museum is located 595 Long Pond Road, Greece and is open on Sundays 1:30 - 4:00 p.m. Visit www.greecehistoricalsociety.org or email greecehistoricalsociety@yahoo.com for more information. The Rochester Radio Show by Barbara Burke
On Tuesday evening, September 12, 2017 the Welsh Room at the Greece Public Library was filled with memories, laughter and stories of when radio ruled in Rochester. The Greece Historical Society hosted another outstanding presentation “The Rochester Radio Show.” Local Rochester radio personality and New York State Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame member Jack Palvino and Tom Proietti, the Resident Scholar in Media at St. John Fisher College, kept the audience of over 100 radio listeners entertained with remembrances of Palvino’s 40 years in what he refers to as his Labor of Love… Broadcasting. Most famous for his “Palvino In The Morning” radio show broadcast from the Midtown Tower during the 1970s, Palvino spoke of radio during this era as, “Like a family in everyone’s home. Radio is the theater of the mind because it forces you to use your imagination.” Palvino also talked about his book “On The Air… My Life In Radio, 1957-1997. The memoir recounts his 40 year career and his philosophy that “If you love what you do, you never have to work a day in your life.” The book also contains photos and accounts of his interviews with four U.S. Presidents and numerous sports and entertainment celebrities including Pete Rose, Mickey Mantle, Jimi Hendrix, Ray Charles, The Beach Boys, Monkees, Supremes and many, many more. Proceeds from the sale of his book

go to an “Excellence in Communications” student scholarship fund. To date 60 students have been helped through this scholarship. Speaking on the future of radio Palvino said, “Radio will survive. The key is for each station to find their niche. The truth is that 95% of the population listen to the radio at some point and providing the listener with what they are interested in will keep them listening.” During the program Tom Proietti interviewed his long-time friend and mentor in a conversational format. Both men are St. John Fisher College Alumni and have worked together through the years in both radio and in development of the Media and Communication program at St. John Fisher. The evening concluded with a question and answer segment where audience members related to the men their radio remembrances. Photos by Bill Sauers
It was a full house at the Greece Historical Society’s presentation of The Rochester Radio Show with Jack Palvino and Tom Proietti.

Progress made by Solar Liberty The Town of Greece is pleased to announce that after two years of planning and working towards bringing alternative energy to Greece, the first solar farm is officially underway. This will result in a portion of the Town’s electrical expenses being reduced to the maximum allowed limit. Solar Liberty is a solar electric installation company. They promote energy independence through installation of solar electric systems. A solar electric system generates electricity and provides a secure return on investment by generating electricity through sunlight with little or no maintenance. According to Solar Liberty (www.solarliberty.com), solar energy works in the following ways: •Sunlight is absorbed into the cells of the solar panels. The electrons between the charged silicon layers of the cells become excited and produce DC electricity. •The solar electricity passes through an inverter, which turns it into the same type of AC power that is delivered by the utility company.
•The new solar electricity first powers any lights, appliances, or equipment that is being used in the building. All available solar electricity will first be used before taking any from the utility power grid. •Excess electricity flows backward through the electric meter out to the grid. A “net meter” spins both forward and backward depending whether excess power is being produced or if it’s being taken from the utility company. In the daytime the meter will either spin backward or slow the count forward. •The only cost is for “net usage” – the difference between the amount taken from the utility company and the amount given back. Depending on the size of the system and usage, the electricity produced will cover either all or part of the overall electric bill. Provided Information and Photos
