Town of Greece Eagle Scout Recognition Award An official Eagle Scout Award Medal Presentation Ceremony was held on August 15, 2018 at the Town Board Meeting. The Town of Greece Eagle Scout Recognition Medal is presented to all Boy Scouts who have recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in their local troop. A proclamation and medal were awarded to Kent Johnson who has recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in Troop Number 278. Kent attained the rank of Eagle Scout through his efforts in building and installing three flower beds at the Gardens at Town Center Apartments in Greece. The first flower bed surrounds the flagpole at the entrance and the other two are located behind the building. “Thank you for your dedication to a project that will enhance the quality of life for residents at the Gardens at Town Center Apartments,” Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich said during the presentation ceremony. The Boy Scouts of America, one of the United States largest youth organizations, is dedicated to promoting selfreliance, courage, and patriotism among young men. The Eagle Scout Award is attained after countless hours of hard work, sacrifice, and dedication to the scouting creed. a win-win,” Laurie said. A dog gets a second chance in life, an inmate gets the opportunity and experience of a positive bond with a dog, and to feel the sense of purpose of helping the dog go on to a better life. And lastly a veteran who may be struggling with loneliness or PTSD can share their life and love with a loving four legged friend. Pals4Pets will have new prison trained dogs at the end of September and will be placing them with veterans. Applications are now being taken for veterans who are interested in a companion dog. Pals4Pets also helps place dogs in special needs homes, Seniors 4 Seniors programs, as well as family pet adoptions. To meet a volunteer from Pals4Pets and to see the dogs available for adoption, stop by Pet Friendly located on Manitou Road in Hilton Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The organization is always in need of volunteers and donations and pet supplies. Suicide Awareness and Prevention
Messiah Lutheran Church, 4301 Mt. Read Blvd., Greece provides many community service programs. A group called I AM ISIAH Inc. recently contacted the Church about their Suicide Awareness and Prevention program. The I AM ISIAH Inc. group was created by Osibisa Johnson, the father of five young adults, after his 22 year old son Isiah Johnson completed the act of suicide in March of 2013. At the time of his death Isiah was the father of a three year old daughter and a seven month old son. His family had no reason to think that Isiah was suicidal until two days before his death when he attempted suicide. After bringing him home from the hospital, his family was unaware of how to help him and two days later he completed the act of suicide. I AM ISIAH Inc. strives to educate the community in hopes of saving other families from having to endure this tragedy. Messiah Lutheran Church will bring I AM ISIAH Inc. to their church on Saturday, October 6, 2018 for a presentation about the importance of suicide awareness and prevention. This is not a pleasant topic, but it is a fact of life and is happening every day. Please join us. This informational event will include a free lunch starting 11:30AM. It will conclude around 3PM or when all questions are answered. For more information call the church office at 865-1866 x 2. “When someone you love becomes a memory, that memory becomes a treasure.” Provided Information
Lifestyle, Obesity and the Cancer Connection continued from page 12
being environmental or lifestyle there are actions that can be done to help limit our exposure to these risks. One of the most important factors that can significantly reduce our risks is our weight which can be improved through diet and exercise. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the latest Vital Signs report 40% of all cancers diagnosis in the United States is related to obesity. In 2014, 630,000 people were diagnosed with cancer that were directly associated to being overweight. People who are obese have more fat tissue which can produce an excess of hormones such as insulin, estrogen and androgens. These hormones in excess can be dangerous and cause cancer cells to thrive, grow and metastasize. Being overweight increases the risk of 13 different types of cancers including breast cancer (especially in menopausal women), colon, rectum, endometrium cancer, pancreatic cancer, kidney and esophageal cancers. Avoiding weight gain all together is best but if you are overweight weight loss is still worth the effort for improved health opportunities and decreased cancer risks. Making positive changes in diet and exercise can drastically
impact overall body fat and reduce weight into a healthier range. Not only can it significantly reduce cancer risks, but also risk factors for heart disease, diabetes, and dementia as well as improve overall mood and energy levels. There are two essentials to help you maintain good health and prevent risks for disease, improved diet and regular exercise. To improve your diet start by removing the highly processed foods that are high in carbs/sugar. These foods increase inflammation and encourage cancer cell growth. Learn what types of foods naturally help reduce cancer like leafy greens, cruciferous veggies, berries, nuts and seeds. By swapping out the unhealthy foods for cancer fighting foods you can boost your body’s ability to destroy cancer cells. Regular exercise, especially aerobic, helps increase oxygen and nourish cells, creating more cellular energy and break down of waste products and toxin removal. Exercise also helps regulate pH balance, strengthens the immune system which is ultimately responsible for fighting off invading hostile organisms. With improved diet and exercise the body will have overall improvements on the metabolism which also helps improve the lymph system and make it more efficient in detoxifying the body.
