From the Publisher Welcome To GreeceNewsNY.com! Westside News, Inc. is pleased to announce its inaugural edition of its new publication, GreeceNewsNY.com. This is the newest offering from Westside News, since it purchased in 2000, Spares & Strikes, a newspaper serving the bowling communities of Buffalo and Niagara Falls. Our Greater Rochester Bowler, which had served a similar audience in the Rochester area since 1989, was eventually merged with the longer-lived Spares & Strikes.

and online versions of GreeceNewsNY.com. Over the years Barb has been a member of our ad production staff, sales staff and group of writers. More recently, she has been maintaining our WestsideNewsNY.com website and has been the point person for our website creative team. She is looking forward to providing a publication…and a website… to the residents of the Town of Greece that will be read…and visited…often.

Since 1953, westside residents have been reading the Suburban News, the flagship weekly newspaper published by Westside News Inc., and the Hamlin-Clarkson Herald, another publication established by Westside News, which commenced in 1988.

Karen Fien, the manager of the Westside News Inc. award-winning production staff, will be designing attractive advertising for GreeceNewsNY.com along with staff members Joanne Michielsen and Vicki Caspersson. Karen will also be designing the new monthly print publication.

There are many, who feel that print publications are no longer relevant in the immediate world of the Internet. However, there are those, who still prefer to receive their news in a print form.

With the addition of newcomer Rachael Blair to our sales staff, Westside News Inc. will have eight account representatives to serve the needs of local businesses desiring to promote their business in GreeceNewsNY.com and on the accompanying website. The Westside News sales staff also includes Mary Lou Rockow, Debbie Day, Jan Miller, JoAnn Chinappi, Lori Antonelli, Ellen Stevens and Tami Raco.

This is why we selected the name GreeceNewsNY.com for this new publication. Westside News believes that tying the print publication to an accompanying website, which is launched at the same time, provides the best of both options. In the world of monthly publications, such as GreeceNewsNY.com, immediacy is obviously of less importance. The goal of GreeceNewsNY.com is to provide information that will not be found in other publications. There will be an increasing focus on photos from happenings around the town of Greece. While photographer Tom Parsons will be present at many of the local events, we also welcome photos from Greece residents. We will include as many of the photos submitted as possible in the print version of GreeceNewsNY.com and any photos that are not included will be found on the website unless they are of such quality that would preclude them. Photos submitted should be of the highest resolution possible for the best chance of being included and submitted to info@WestsideNewsNY.com. Barbara Burke will oversee the content for both the print

Westside News Inc. welcomes the comments of the residents of the Town of Greece. Please forward your comments and/or questions to info@WestsideNewsNY.com. Lastly, Westside News Inc. asks that you, the readers of this new publication and visitors to the accompanying website, look to the businesses advertising contained in the print and internet versions to meet your needs that can be provided by those businesses. It would be greatly appreciated if you mentioned that you saw their ad in GreeceNewsNY.com or on the website. The support of those businesses will help to secure the future of GreeceNewsNY.com. Thank you. Keith Ryan Publisher

“Barns of Greece” Exhibit opens October 5 at the Greece Historical Society Museum   How many barns are there in the town of Greece? 20? 50? 100?   In 2011, with a realization that the barns of Greece were disappearing, Jane Grant, a Greece town resident, began taking photos of the town’s barns, working on the same idea that Historical Society President Bill Sauers had some years before: if the structures cannot be saved, at least their photos will be preserved.   It became apparent that the buildings themselves were a small part of what needed to be preserved. More interesting to her were the stories that gave life to the boards and beams.   Greece’s barns hold stories of early pioneer families, of immigrants looking for a new life, stories of humor, drama, and surprises. Jane will share the photos and stories in this new exhibit opening on October 5th at the Greece Historical Society Museum located at 595 Long Pond Road, Greece.   Residents who have pictures or memories of these disappearing agricultural buildings are invited to be part of the celebration of THE BARN. You are invited to share your photos, family memories, newspaper clippings and more during this exhibit.   Jane Grant is a retired educator, beginning her career as a Social Studies teacher in Greece and later serving on the staff of a Rochester city church. Her interest in local history led her to write a booklet about Greece’s KodaVista neighborhood.   Jane also serves as a docent at the Susan B. Anthony Museum and House, and volunteers with the Greece community’s refugees.   The best part of the Greece barns project, Jane says, was meeting so many helpful and delightful Greece residents.   Meet Jane at the museum on October 5th and talk to her about her two year effort to create this exhibit.

The Greece Historical Society Presents...

Early Aviation in the Rochester Area A presentation by Bill Sauers

On October 14th at 7:00pm at the Greece Public Library, 2 Vince Tofany Blvd. Learn about the first aeroplane flights in the Rochester area which were conducted in the Town of Chili, on a field owned by a former Town of Greece Supervisor and about other area fields that were used before 1920. Included in the program will be the history of the current airport and stories about some of the local characters that tried to, or actually did, fly those early aeroplanes. An earlier version of the program was presented at The Greece Historical Society Museum in January 2013.   The program will be presented by Bill Sauers, a lifelong resident of the Town of Greece. Bill is currently the president of the Greece Historical Society, serves on the Rochester Armed Forces Day Committee, and is a member of the Town of Greece Preservation Commission. He has written articles for the Glenn Curtiss Museum and the Democrat & Chronicle Roc-Roots column. He has been researching early aviation in the Rochester area for several years.   Bill’s interest in early aviation in Rochester was sparked by an article he came across about an airport in Greece. He said, “I had found a 1927 article about an airport in the Town of Greece and began to investigate where it was located. This lead to the real-

ization that much of the early aviation history in the Rochester area had been lost to time and I decided to put together a story to tell.”   Some of the interesting facts that Bill will share in his PowerPoint presentation include: · In 1910 Rochester had the primary airplane engine company in the country · Within a year after the first public airplane flight in the US, someone was flying in Rochester · The first person to fly in aerial combat was from Rochester · A Rochester policeman first came up with the idea of air traffic control in 1911. For more details about these facts and more, plan to attend this free program. The public is invited to attend, a $2.00 donation would be appreciated from non-members.   For more information call 585-225-7221, visit http://www. greecehistoricalsociety.net or “like” the Greece Historical Society on Facebook. From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich   During my campaign for Greece Supervisor I committed to taking a good town and making it great once again. That promise has been my focus since day one and I have continued to make changes and bring enhancements to the residents of the Town of Greece.

Early in the year we announced that the Town of Greece, would be hosting a good oldfashioned Fourth of July celebration. The day began with a 5K Freedom run and then a Scooby Kids Fun Run. Later in the afternoon, the town hall was packed with families enjoying all of the family friendly activities and entertainment. Our feature performance for the evening was “Orleans” and they rocked the house. But of course, the grand finale of the day was a fireworks show that some residents remarked could have taken Disney by storm. It was wonderful to celebrate with the residents of the town. Many thanks to the employees of town hall for volunteering their time to make this event possible. Stay tuned....we’ll be back next year, with more performances and, of course, a spectacular fireworks display   Our concert series “Supervisor Reilich’s Concerts at the Hall” have been well received. We started out the summer with Beatle Magic; over 350 residents joined me and the members of the Town Board, singing and dancing the afternoon away on the front lawn at town hall. It was great to see people of all ages, from the very young to our seniors joining and enjoying a warm summer day. Our second concert was GPAS Choral Society and we are rounding out the series with the Rat Pack.   Many folks have inquired about the work being done next to the Community and Senior Center. Thanks to a grant from Senator Robach, we started work on a town pavilion. This facility will be used not only for our Community and Senior Center events, but will be used for many events we previously had put the town tent up for. It will provide a more stable and weather-protected venue for our concert series, our senior luncheons, summer programs.... we think the possibilities are endless.   Also, alongside of the Community and Senior Center, we are constructing pickle ball courts. I heard from many residents that they wanted a dedicated court for pickle ball. We hope to have town-sponsored tournaments starting next year and I am certain they will be used regularly.   There are many more programs and activities planned for our residents, stop by and join us...

Spotlight on Business front with the customer, listening to them, getting all the details of what they want, what the space is going to be used for and how often it will be used. For example with a deck, I don’t use standard designs A, B or C, I custom design the deck taking into consideration the space around it, how it will look in that space and what materials to use based on what the customer has expressed as their needs. Customer satisfaction is the ultimate goal,” he says.

Wood Works Remodeling & Renovations

One of Dave’s recent projects found the need for a removable staircase rail. “The space for moving mattresses or dressers up and down the stairway was limited. The existing stair rail was wrought iron. I designed a hybrid removable stair rail that consisted of wrought iron spokes with an oak handrail that blended beautifully with the oak steps and was easily removable by simply unbolting and removing the rail,” he says. Finding solutions to individual needs is the goal of Wood Works and ultimately 100% customer satisfaction is the result.

Wood Works Remodeling & Renovations founder and owner Dave Pandina started the business in 1983 as a part time job doing what is his passion - custom woodworking. “I come from an engineering and machining background, working for many years in the field. For nine years I was manager of the engineering department of an automated office equipment manufacturing company and my main job was finding betters ways to make things,” he says.

Wood Works Remodeling & Renovations specializes in custom work… decks, sheds, attic and basement finishing and carpentry work. Also light bath and kitchen remodeling. The business is customer driven and believes in old fashioned fairness and value. Wood Works is fully insured, offers free estimates and the owner Dave Pandina is a one man operation, he completes every job, start to finish.

In 2000 Pandina’s part time custom woodworking job became his full time career and he expanded the business to include remodeling and renovation of homes.

For more information on Wood Works Remodeling & Renovations visit www.woodworks-rr.com, call Dave Pandina at 585-5099663 or email dpandina2@rochester.rr.com.

With his background in finding solutions, Dave put this expertise to work and says the process of meeting one-on-one with the customer is the key to a successful business. “I spend time up-

Autumn chores yield springtime results by Kristina Gabalski   Autumn arrived officially September 23 and although the growing season is drawing to a close, this is one of my favorite times of the year for garden work. The list of chores is a long one - there’s still harvesting of veggies like Swiss chard, carrots, potatoes and other root crops as well as ornamentals like pumpkins and gourds; I’m still watering containers during those dry days; I love planting shrubs and perennials (especially when I find them on clearance!); and, of course, there’s the clean-up of perennial beds.   There are still many golden, warm days left for outdoor work and it’s great to have the garden to compel me to be outside and enjoy the blue sky, the colors, the flocks of geese heading south and the last few hummingbirds. Even the cloudy, chilly days are great opportunities to get heavier work done without breaking a sweat.   I’ve just begun the annual clean-up work of pulling out all the weeds one more time, cutting back and cleaning up perennial flowers and pruning back some of the shrubs. I like to add perennials and shrubs along the way and spring bulbs, too. There’s never enough time to get it all done, but I keep working as long as I can and the rest has to wait until spring. We’ve been getting some thaw times over the winter in recent years and if it’s not too wet, I try to use those days for clean-up work as well.   Even with all the plants wrapping up their growing life or settling down for their winter’s nap, there are autumn blooming perennials that keep the interest going into the fall. I have sedum, which right now is a lovely deep pink color, and I love the hardy mums at this time of year. I’m particularly enjoying the sweet and bright blooms on my Japanese anemone plants. I have a white blooming variety - there are also some in pink. It’s fun to have something so delicate-looking coming into bloom at the very tailend of the growing season.   Mine are planted in a spot that can get dry and that doesn’t have the greatest soil conditions - but the plants are now established and doing well. I started with two plants and they are spreading around the base of a crab apple tree in partial shade. It can take a while for them to get established, but once they do - Japanese anemones can be a bit invasive and some folks don’t like them for that reason. I’m happy to have them filling in a bit of a problem area in my garden and fortunately have plenty of room for them to spread. I would really miss them if I ever decided to remove them because of this trait.   The plants will do best in partial shade - full sun can burn them and full shade can result in fewer flowers. I add a mulch of organic material when I get a chance and because they tend to like moist soil conditions, will water them once a week in the summer if conditions become dry. You can plant Japanese anemones in early autumn and divide established clumps in the spring when the foliage emerges.   I find the plants to be very attractive. They are native to Asia and the cup-shaped blossoms with satiny petals surround a con-

trasting green and gold central button. The blooms are born on tall stems ( 2 to 4 ft.) over clumps of dark green, maple-like leaves. The foliage adds nice texture and dark green color to the garden all summer.   Japanese anemones are very tough and I’ve read they can even stand up to considerable neglect.   Like many of my flowers, I cut them for fall bouquets - because of their long-straight stems they are a fun “finishing touch” to an arrangement. I add them at the last moment and they act as exclamation points to the bouquet.   They function the same way in the garden - the flowers are relatively small and are so much higher than the foliage clump that even a large planting has more of a “white or pink sprinkles” effect than a huge “wow” impact in the bed or border planting.   When I purchased my plants at a local garden store, the clerk was a bit incredulous at my selection. “Not many people buy these,” she said.   That’s too bad. Japanese anemones are a sweet and easy way to extend the growing season in your garden and to add that elegant “exclamation point” to the end of the growing season.

Pros and cons of Plan 2014 clearly defined   Forty-one organizations across the U.S. and Canada are calling on the federal governments to adopt Plan 2014 which would regulate water levels in Lake Ontario. Plan 2014 was unanimously recommended by the International Joint Commission in June, but it also faces strong opposition from local governments.   This summer, representatives of 41 environmental organizations including the NY League of Conservation Voters, Ducks Unlimited, Trout Unlimited, Save the River, World Wildlife Fund Canada and the National Wildlife Association, sent a letter expressing strong support for Plan 2014 to U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and elected officials and representatives of federal agencies in the United States and Canada.

The letter details how Plan 2014 will protect against extreme water levels, restore tens of thousands of acres of wetlands, boost hydropower production, enhance outdoor recreation and increase the resilience of 712 miles of Lake Ontario Shoreline in the U.S. and Canada, a news release from the Nature Conservancy states.   “The more the public learns about Plan 2014, the more they support it,” says Jim Howe, The Nature Conservancy’s Central and Western New York Chapter executive director. “This is a once-ina-generation chance to restore a Great Lake, invest in New York’s recreation-based economy and prepare for climate change. We hope everyone will explore the facts about this plan, and express their support for its adoption.”   Local government leaders, however, have voiced strong opposition to the plan and even traveled to Washington, D.C. in July to meet with senators and State Department officials to express concerns.   Niagara-Orleans Regional Alliance co-chairs Lynne Johnson, an Orleans County legislator, and David Godfrey, a Niagara County legislator, have said Plan 2014 may benefit the ecosystem, but it will disproportionally affect the southern shore of Lake Ontario.   Johnson and Godfrey call the plan “catastrophic to communities along the lakeshore,” because of anticipated erosion of property during times of high water and losses to the $94 million/year sport fishing industry and shipping interests when levels are low. They say Plan 2014 will cost every single tax payer in shoreline counties as “all taxpayers will end up paying to make up for losses in sales tax.”

Both county legislatures have called on Gov. Andrew Cuomo to step up and use his power to veto the plan.   Congressman Chris Collins has also been critical of the Plan, saying it will “devastate residents along the lake’s southern shore ... it is clear this plan is not in the best interest of homeowners and other stakeholders along the Lake Ontario shoreline,” he said in a statement following the July meetings in Washington, D.C. “I remain committed to working with my colleagues in state and local government against its implementation.” Submitted information

“I Dig this Town”

“I Dig This Town” held on August 9th was a family event sponsored by The Town of Greece. The climb aboard experience for Greece town residents was held at the Greece Town Hall Campus.   Town vehicles were on display and available for children and adults to explore including the new black and white police cars and a large number of town trucks from the Department of Public Works.   A highlight of the “community” day was the arrival of a United States Border Patrol helicopter which landed on the lawn in front of the Town Hall.   There were plenty of family activities including face painting, bounce houses, clowns and balloon animals.

Caraglio’s Pizza   Caraglio’s Pizza owner Tony Caraglio takes pride in offering his delicious pizza and Italian speciality foods to his customers. Growing up in Greece, Tony learned his cooking skills by paying close attention to, and working with his grandfather in his kitchen. He loved Sundays because that was the day his grandfather would make sauce, and sometimes pizza. “I would spend all day by my grandfathers side just watching him create different dishes for the family,” Tony said.   He took this knowledge and passion for cooking with him when he left home to attend Alfred University where he graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. While at Alfred, Tony made pizza from scratch every Friday night… this got to be known as “Tony’s Pizza Night.” It became so popular with his fellow students and friends that friends from other colleges would drive to Alfred just to have some of his pizza. After graduation, Tony put his Engineering degree to work at a local company, but his love and passion for cooking never left him.   In April of 2004 he open his first Pizzeria at 7 Main Street in Hilton (392-9000). Since then Caraglio’s Pizza has added three more locations…in January of 2006 at 1169 North Greece Road (225-8630), then in January of 2007 at 2882 Dewey Avenue (6638390) and most recently in October of 2011 at 3869 Lyell Road, on the corner of Lyell Road and Elmgrove Road in Gates (426-0270). Tony’s passion for making a great pizza every single time has not gone away, in fact it has grown stronger with each pizza he sells.   Caraglio’s Pizza offers high quality, fresh, made-to-order traditional pizza, and his signature “specialty pizzas,” including Chicken Wing, Taco, Pulled Pork, and Breakfast pizzas, wings (boneless

and regular), calzones, subs and wraps, grilled burgers and hots, salads, appetizers and desserts. They also have an “Everyday Specials” lunch menu and Caraglio’s Pizza Club where membership is free and club members are emailed member only specials and coupons. Sign up online it’s easy and free to join.   Caraglio’s Pizza also offers a full catering service. The catering menu includes made-from-scratch entrees and salads including Italian favorites Chicken Parmesan, Eggplant Parmesan and Chicken French. The catering menu can be customized to your specific order and if you don’t see something you want Tony says, “Just ask!” Full and half pan options are available.   Delicious, made-from-scratch food, using family recipes, combined with attention to customer service and satisfaction is the key to Caraglio’s Pizza success.   Pizzeria hours are Sunday thru Thursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday 11a. m. to 10 p.m.   For more information and to view the full pizzeria and catering menu for Caraglio’s Pizza visit their website at www. caragliospizza.com

Autumn perfect time for wine tour

Colorful foliage, abundantly stocked farm stands, and sparkling weather all make autumn an ideal time to take a drive along western New York’s wine trails.   Jim Trezise of the New York Wine & Grape Foundation says that since 2011, the number of farm wineries have grown by nearly 50 percent in New York and commercial wineries have seen the same growth percentage. Farm winery branch offices have jumped 90 percent during that time, from 29 to 55.   Also growing are microbreweries - up 160 percent and restaurant brewers up 230 percent.   Farm distilleries have grown from 10 to 55 since 2011 and farm cideries have escalated from 7 to 29, an increase of 480 percent.   “New York State is fast becoming the farm-based craft beverage capital of America,” Trezise says.   The craft beverage boom is also a huge boost to the state’s agricultural base, Trezise notes, because raw ingredients used grapes, apples, other fruits and grain are grown right here on local farms.   If you’re thirsty for a taste of New York wines, plan a trip along either the Lake Ontario or Niagara Wine Trail.   The moderating effect of Lake Ontario - cooling in the summer and warming in the winter - creates good grape growing conditions along the Lake Ontario Wine Trail. On the Niagara Wine Trail, the Niagara Escarpment and surrounding area also benefits from its proximity to the Great Lake. The warm micro-climate is additionally aided by the fact the Escarpment actually traps warm air. Couple the mild conditions with excellent soil and you have ideal conditions for grape and wine production.   According to the New York Wine & Grape Foundation, the Niagara Region is one of the fastest growing wine regions in the state. Local Wineries on the Lake Ontario Wine Trail: •Casa Larga Vineyards, 2287 Turk Hill Road, Fairport. Casa Larga has been producing high quality, award winning wines for 40 years. •Lake Ontario Winery and Vineyards, 699 Five Mile Line Road, Webster (see also the Niagara List). The original location at the historic Mayer’s cider mill has wines available for purchase and tasting. •Young Sommer Winery, 4287 Jersey Road, Williamson, between Williamson and Pultneyville. Young Sommer specializes in fruit and grape wines. •Apple Country Spirits Farm Distillery, 3274 Eddy Road, Williamson. Apple Country produces fine quality fruit-based spirits made from fruit grown on their farm. Local Highlights of the Niagara Wine Trail: •Schwenk Wine Cellars, 1456 Bills Road, Kent. Schwenk produces award winning wines which include semi-dry to sweet. The winery features a tasting room. •Lake Ontario Winery, 1593 Hamlin Parma Townline Road, Hilton (see also Lake Ontario Wine Trail for Webster location). The Hilton

location features a tasting room, bistro and gift shop. •Vizcarra Vineyards at Becker Farms, 3724 Quaker Road, Gasport. Becker Farms has a tasting room and produces fruit, white, blush and red wines including Spiced Apple, Apple Cranny, Perfect Plum and Becker Blue. Becker Brewing offers eight locally produced, hand-crafted micro brews and ciders. The farm features u-pick fruit, a bakery, homemade jams and fudge. •Leonard Oakes Estate Winery, 10609 Ridge Road, Medina. The location features a tasting room and gift shop. Leonard Oakes produces a number of different wines including classic and dessert wines, fruit wines and its popular Steampunk Cider. Submitted information

Basil Marella Skate Park   Basil Marella Skate Park located at 975 English Road, Greece provides a safe and challenging skateboard experience for local skate enthusiasts.   Basil Marella Park is the most centrally located park in Greece and is the only park that is completely accessible by sidewalks. The park is also connected to the 390 bike path which can be used by skateboarders.   The skate park was built over ten years ago to give skateboarders a safe place to pursue their passion and to keep the boarders away from the store fronts and parking lots - a favorite place to skate before the park was open. The skate park is also a solution to appease the local business owners who found issues with the boarders riding on the sidewalks and in parking lots of businesses.   Last year the skate park added two quarter pipes and additional jumps and replaced and repaired some worn out sections of the park.   According to John Plummer, Senior Labor Foreman for the Town of Greece, Department of Public Works, the town consulted with youth and adults that frequently use the park for ideas for the upgrades. He says, “We talked to the neighborhood kids and a local skate shop on Dewey Avenue to find out what would be the best upgrades for the skate park. They gave us suggestions of what they would like to see in the park and upgrades that would be usable for both intermediate and advanced skaters.” Some of the skateboarders also helped with the construction and installation of the new elements.   Visit the park to skate or observe the skills of the multitude of skaters that take advantage of this Greece recreational resource. Basil Marella park is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.   In addition to the skate park Basil Marella Park is home to 6 tennis courts, 2 pickle ball courts, 2 volleyball courts, 2 basketball courts, 7 soccer fields and a disc golf course.

Golden Ponds Restaurant & Party House   The beautiful setting on Long Pond Road where Golden Ponds Restaurant and Party House is located was once a horse stable and riding arena built in the 1970s.   After extensive remodeling and reconstruction of the original horse farm buildings, Golden Ponds Restaurant opened in 1984. Since opening they have continued to update and remodel their party rooms and have added two spacious outdoor garden areas. The beautiful, peaceful garden areas are the perfect setting for wedding ceremonies and celebrations.   Their catering and full service restaurant and party rooms are available for functions hosting up to 300 people. Golden Ponds Restaurant & Party House is available for weddings, graduations, anniversaries, baptisms, wedding and baby showers, stag parties and any event that brings people together for fun, relaxation and enjoying good food.   Owner Ralph Rinaudo says he listens to his customers and uses their feedback in his business planning. “I have very loyal customers who come here every week for dining and the buffets. We have been doing our buffets for over 20 years and our customers really like them and appreciate that we make everything right here at our restaurant from scratch. It is important to people and they tell me that, they know that when they dine here that they are getting the freshest foods made from the finest ingredients,” Ralph said.
