The Town of Greece Eagle Scout Recognition Medal is presented to all Boy Scouts who have recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the local troop. “Since first launching the Eagle Scout Recognition Award Medal back in March the Town has presented over 10 medals to recently inducted Eagle Scouts. Jim’s Ground

For the past three years Jimmy, Kyle and Lindsay have been operating Jim’s Ground Round at 1205 Spencerport Road (Rt. 31) in Gates. Their father Jim Nucelli, along with his twin brother Ralph, owned and operated Jim & Ralph’s Restaurant for almost 30 years. “We all grew up working with my Dad and Uncle, and we really loved it. When Jim & Ralph’s closed it didn’t take long for us to decide to open it up again,” says Lindsay. Traditions carry on at the restaurant…fresh ingredients and making all the favorites from scratch. All recipes originate from their father Jim. They are most famous for their Ground Round Burgers, each of which is hand scooped from fresh ground round and then flattened with a pie plate to shape it. Each burger is cooked on the original grill that has been used in their restaurants for 32 years, since the first Jim & Ralph’s Restaurant opened. Other customer favorites include the Steak Bomber, Wings, Beef on Weck (with in-house roasted beef) and a Half Chicken Dinner. Every Friday a traditional hand-battered Friday Fish Fry is served. It includes fresh golden-fried haddock, homemade coleslaw and french fries. Also on the menu are chili, sandwiches, salads, wraps, wings, kid’s meals and more. “We all really love what we do. The best part of the job is the customers. We see many of the Kodak employees that ate regularly at Jim & Ralph’s. We really love to see new faces, so come in and enjoy some of our great food and our wonderful staff,” Lindsay says. Jim’s Ground, 585-413-0757, is open Monday - Thursday 11AM-9PM, Friday and Saturday 11AM - 9:30PM, Closed on Sunday.

Greece Police Athletic League

Fostering positive community involvement with the police. by Tami Raco

Approximately 45 years ago a young officer at the Greece Police Department named Gerald Phelan began the Greece Police Athletic League (PAL). He was inspired to do so after he had positive experiences while growing up in the city and participating with a similar program with the Rochester City Police Department. In 1971 he became a Greece Police officer, and shortly after began the Greece PAL program. Phelan’s PAL Program goal in beginning was to help keep children off the streets while involving them in sports with officers. Phelan retired 23 years later as Chief of Police and the program has been running successfully since. PAL is a national police organization that exists to prevent juvenile crime and violence by providing athletic, recreational and educational opportunities and resources to PAL Chapters. A little over 70 years ago PAL began with six Chapters on the Eastern seaboard that joined together to form an association to share ideas and resources and compete in several sports. Today there are over 400 PAL Member Chapters. Based on the conviction that young people - if they are reached early enough - can develop strong positive attitudes towards police officers in their journey through life toward the goal of maturity and good citizenship. Studies have shown that if a young person respects a police officer on the ball field, gym or classroom, the youth will likely come to respect the laws that police officers enforce. Such respect is beneficial to the youth, the police officer, the neighborhood and the community as a whole. To date the Greece PAL program has coached over 1000 kids

and 3 generations. It began with boxing and football in the early 70’s and currently offers softball and bowling. The program is available at no cost to area youth ages 6-16. It is the only free PAL program in New York State. All funds are raised through the annual fundraising drive. The monies collected cover the cost of equipment, t-shirts, trophies and the annual picnic. Officers volunteer their time to help coach the children. Retired Chief Police Phelan fondly recalls seeing children participating in this program, whom he has personally coached their parents and grandparent. Retired Chief Phelan continues to stay connected to the PAL program by attending practices, games and the picnic whenever he can. The softball program runs from July through August with 4 different age groups and 8 teams. It concludes at the end of August with a picnic. Every child will be recognized individually and receives a trophy. The PAL bowling program runs during the school winter breaks. Chief of Police Patrick Phelan, (son of the founder, Retired Chief Gerald Phelan) oversees the PAL program. The coordinator for Greece PAL is Officer Todd Gumaer. Officer Gumaer has been actively working with PAL and the youth for the past 25 years. Todd played in PAL as a young boy in 1978-79 and began volunteering in the PAL program in 1990 and has been dedicating his time and energy to the program ever since. Officer Gumaer will be retiring this spring but plans to stay in touch with the PAL program. This tradition continues during a time that helps the children understand that the police officers are there to help keep them safe and build a stronger community for their families to live in. When talking with Retired Chief Phelan on why he felt so strongly on the value of the PAL program to the community he replied “This is a great opportunity to allow kids and adults to see us (police officers) outside of our official duties, to be able to see us as real people”. For more information on the Greece Police PAL program please visit http://www.greecepal. com/ Photos by Karen Fien See more photos from this event online at www.greecenewsny.com On the Cover - Police Officer Eric Hughes provides guidance to a PAL Program participant.

From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich Looking back this summer, a lot has been accomplished at Town Hall. The Third Annual Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration in the Town of Greece saw thousands of attendees flock to Town Hall for the day’s festivities. Kicking off the day was our 5K Freedom Run and the Scooby Stars and Stripes Fun Run. This year we had record numbers with over 200 people signing up for the 5k and 50 for the Scooby Stars and Stripes this year’s races turned out to be a great success. Later in the afternoon, bouncy houses, and games were available for kids and families to enjoy. This year we had two musical performances for residents to enjoy. Starting out the evening were the Boomers followed by the five time Grammy nominated band, Ambrosia, who had the crowd on their feet during their whole performance. Finishing out the night in true Fourth of July fashioned was our biggest fireworks display yet which took place over the Town Court building. It was estimated that over 15,000 people made their way to Town Hall to view the fireworks. Both the front lawn and the parking lot were jam-packed with blankets, chairs and families looking above at our spectacular fireworks display. Fourth of July always holds a

special place in every community across the United States and every year we are happy to continue to bring this event to Greece bearing no cost to the taxpayers. Our top sponsors this year, included Wegmans, Bob Johnson Chevrolet, M&T Bank and Mark IV Construction all helping to make the event possible. August 2nd saw the second time National Night Out has been held at Town Hall. Food trucks were on hand to serve up dinner while the Greece Police Department and other local organizations hosted safety and anti-bullying demonstrations. Included in this year’s event was the landing of a U.S. Customs and Boarder Control Helicopter on the Town Hall Campus. Walmart also generously donated a bicycle and helmet that was raffled off to help raise money for the Greece Police Athletic League. This important event helps forge a tighter bond between police and the community in which they are sworn to protect. I hope to see it grow in the coming years. Another successful event was I Dig This Town, which was held on August 6th at the Town Hall Campus. The event drew hundreds of families that had the chance to take a closer look at the Town’s public works equipment and part take in various Community and Senior Center activities. On a final note, our friends at the Greece Public Library will be hosting a fall book sale from September 15-17th at the Greece Public Library in the Welsh Room. The selection includes; adult fiction, adult non-fiction, large print books, biographies, and more. For more information please call our Library at 225-8951. I hope that you will take advantage of all of our upcoming programs, and if I can be of assistance to you in any other town related matter please do not hesitate to contact our office at 225-2000.

Can sleep affect your weight? by Personal Trainer and Nutrition Coach Tami Mungenast

Diet and exercise definitely have their place in the weight loss equation but sleep could be your secret weapon. Sleep affects many hormones in your body which ultimately affect your body’s ability to lose weight. The lack of sleep can alter the hormones to actually increase your ability to store fat especially abdominal fat. Here are some tips on how proper sleep can help you shrink your waist line; • Appetite Control; Sleep affects levels of the hungerregulating hormones such as leptin and ghrelin. These hormones help your body realize when it’s full or hungry. Sleep deprivation lowers levels of leptin while raising levels of ghrelin, which can cause overeating when you’re sleepdeprived. A recent study found that women who didn’t sleep enough ate an average of 300 more calories than those who got adequate sleep. • Belly fat: It is no secret that high levels of anxiety and stress increase cortisol levels which ultimately increase your body’s fat storing ability. Getting a good night’s sleep will help control Cortisol levels and allow your good diet and exercise program to work. . • More energy and mental clarity: After a good night’s sleep you are more likely to stay on track with your diet, engage in your exercise program and have an overall more productive day. These are all positive steps towards achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. • Fat gene suppression: Studies show that women who sleep at least 7-9 hours a night weigh less than those who are chronically sleep deprived. Researchers believe that those who are sleep deprived are at more of a risk for obesity than any genetic predisposition to be overweight.

“Fall Harvest Bash” Our Mother of Sorrows is starting a new tradition – the Fall Harvest Bash. The event will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 11, 2016 at the Church, 5000 Mt. Read Boulevard, Greece. The Fall Harvest Bash features Chicken BBQ, Food Trucks, Entertainment, Coffee House, Children’s Games, Karaoke, Bouncy House, Petting Zoo, a Ministry Fair and more. All are welcome. “The goal of this event will be to celebrate our faith, build relationships with fellow parishioners, and have fun. We also invite our neighbors to learn more about our parish family,” said Father Bill Coffas, pastor. There will be a fundraiser raffle with $15,000 in cash prizes: Grand Prize $10,000; 2nd Place $2,000; 3rd thru 8th $500 each. Raffle tickets are $20 each. Drawing is at 5PM. Proceeds go toward the parish’s capital funds to offset annual expenses. Tickets are available for purchase in the Rectory Office and at all Masses. The Fall Harvest Bash and raffle replace the annual festival, which had been held previously in June featuring carnival rides. “At the Fall Harvest Bash, we will celebrate what is core to our mission: Our faith,” said Father Coffas. “Over the past year, we have had nearly 40 families join Our Mother of Sorrows and starting new traditions will continue to help our parish flourish.” For more information visit www.motherofsorrows.net. When you retire, you’ll experience many changes in your life. But should you also change the way you invest? During your working years, it’s important to maintain a diversified investment portfolio – one that provides you with opportunities for growth, within the limits of your individual risk tolerance. Diversification can help you reduce the impact of volatility on your investments, though it can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses. But when you retire, do you still need to think about growth? Shouldn’t you shift most of your assets to conservative vehicles, like certificates of deposit, that can protect your principal? Actually, even as a retiree, you’ll need some growth potential in your portfolio. You could be retired for two or three decades, and in that time, inflation can seriously erode your purchasing power. To protect yourself against this threat, you’ll need a reasonable percentage of growth-oriented vehicles, along with income-producing ones. In other words, you can’t abandon the principle of diversification – no matter where you are on your journey through life.

Is Diversification Still Important for Retirees?

One of our customers said: We saw an ad for the Long Pond Pub and decided to try it... the bar was full but not noisy or raucous, like a group of friends having drinks together. We tried the wings, definitely the best we have had in a very long time - tried several different sauces, could tell that they were all homemade and fresh. We had a great time and would definitely go again.
