Choosing the right summer camp (Creative Outlet) - Summer boredom setting in? What’s a parent to do? This year, why not send your child to camp? There are a number of choices available, including some for children with special needs. Here are some pointers to ensure you pick the right camp. First, determine whether to send your child to a day camp or a traditional camp with overnight stays. Younger children may not be ready to spend all day and night away from home. Whatever the type of camp, sessions can last from a few days to a week or longer. Decide what type of camp would be the right fit for your child. Some camps teach new skills, while others focus on the development of special interests. Some are co-ed and involve both adults and children, while others are limited. Some are structured, while others are set by the pace of the attendees. What do you want your child to take away from the camp experience?
Summer Camps for Kids
Cost is another consideration. Traditional camps typically cost more than day camps. Some camps may have additional fees for items like uniforms and off-site trips. After you have narrowed down your camp choices, arrange to visit them so you can talk with the people responsible for the camp. What kind of facilities does the camp offer? What is the camper-to-counselor ratio? What kind of training does the staff receive? What kind of instruction do the campers receive? What are the sleeping arrangements like? What kind of food is served? What arrangements are made to ensure campers’ safety in an emergency (medical or dangerous weather)? Ask for references and don’t be afraid to check them out. Summer camp can allow children the opportunity to learn new skills and try new things. It combines learning with vacationing. Children will stay busy and have fun, and you’ll never have to hear “I’m bored” again.

Slide into summer safety (Family Features) Summer is a time for playground fun, camping, boating, swimming, biking and other outdoor activities. Longer days mean more time outside and more physical activity, which translates to increased potential for injuries. Playground falls, lawnmower accidents, campfire and fire pit burns are some common childhood injuries that can happen during summer months. These tips from Shriners Hospitals for Children can help your family enjoy a fun, injury-free summer. Go outside and play Outdoor play provides physical and mental health benefits, including opportunities for exercise, creative expression, stress reduction and access to a free and natural source of vitamin D – sunlight. Before sending kids out to play, make sure they are wearing shoes to protect their feet from
cuts, scrapes and splinters, and wearing sunscreen to protect against sunburns and harmful ultraviolet rays. Playground 101 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that emergency departments treat more than 200,000 children ages 14 and younger every year for playground-related injuries. Before your kids head to the playground, keep these precautions in mind: •Choose parks and playgrounds that are appropriate for their age and offer shockabsorbing surfaces. •Teach children that pushing and shoving on the playground can result in accidents and injuries. •Remind kids to go down the slide one at a time and to wait until the slide is completely clear before taking their turn. Teach them to always sit facing forward with their legs

straight in front of them and to never slide down headfirst. •Remind children to swing sitting down. Encourage them to wait until the swing stops before getting off and to be careful when walking in front of moving swings. Make a safe splash While playing poolside may be a blast, Safe Kids Worldwide reports that drowning is the leading cause of injury-related deaths for children ages one through four and the third-leading cause of injury-related deaths among those under 19. Additionally, the University of Michigan Health Systems estimate that about 6,000 kids under the age of 14 are hospitalized because of diving injuries each year, with one in five sustaining a spinal cord injury. Prevent accidents and injuries with these tips to ensure your family’s safety around water: •Instruct children to never swim alone or go near water without an adult present. •Give children your undivided attention when they are swimming or near any body of water. •Always jump in feet first to check the depth before diving into any body of water. •Never dive in the shallow end of the pool or into above-ground pools. Fun on the water Boating, tubing and other water sports can be great fun but can also be dangerous. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, nearly 71 percent of all boating fatalities are drownings, 85 percent of which are a result of not

wearing a life jacket. Here is what you can do to enjoy the water safely: •Always have children wear a Coast Guard-approved, properly fitted life jacket while on a boat, around an open body of water or when participating in water sports. •Educate yourself. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, 86 percent of boating accident deaths involve boaters who have not completed a safety course. •Always check water conditions and forecasts before going out on the water. Fire safety simplified According to the CDC, more than 300 children ages 19 and under are treated in emergency rooms for fire- and burn-related injuries each day. Use these tips to help keep children safe around fires, fireworks, grills and other heat sources: •Teach kids to never play with matches, gasoline, lighter fluid or lighters. Make a habit of placing these items out of the reach of young children. •Do not leave children unattended near grills, campfires, fire pits or bonfires. Always have a bucket of water or fire extinguisher nearby whenever there is an open flame. •Take your child to a doctor or hospital immediately if he or she is injured in a fire or by fireworks. •Leave fireworks to the professionals. River raft adventures at Letchworth State Park by Barbara Burke Looking for some family time that provides growth for the mind, the body and the spirit? Adventure Calls Outfitters river rides on the Genesee River in Letchworth State Park in Castile, New York offer all of that and more. Described as “The Grand Canyon of the East,” a river raft ride through the Letchworth State Park Gorge is the perfect adventure for first-time rafter and families with young children. Adventure Calls Outfitters President and owner Kevin Kretschmer says, “The five mile river ride is a scenic tour through the south end at the deepest part of the gorge. It is a relaxing ride that gives you time to look around to see and experience the gorge. Riders often encounter wildlife in the park that live along the river including eagles, herons, sea birds, beavers, hawks, river otters, deer, duck, geese and more. It is a perfect outing for families and groups of all sizes.” The tour passes the Wolf Creek Waterfalls that have a total drop of 225 feet. Wolf Creek Falls is made up of a series of four very steep cascades with some sections containing near vertical falls. The fourth section known as the Shower Curtain is not fully visible from the trails and can only be seen on the river ride. There is typically a stop at the Wolf Creek Falls during the ride. The river ride also passes the Denton Brook Cascade, the Three Sisters, and through the deepest part of the Great Bend Gorge (550 feet). There are 14 sets of rapids that are spread over the course of the trip. Whitewater rafting is classified on a level of difficulty scale from one through six. The Letchworth Park river rafting trip is one and two on the scale. Class 1 is described as - Moving water with small waves that tug at the boat. A relaxing way to spend the day. Class 2 is described as - Easy rapids, waves up to three feet that are readily seen. Some maneuvering is required. Adventure Calls Outfitters was founded in 1981 by Terry Shearn. Purchased upon Shern’s retirement in 1999 by current owner Kevin Kretschmer, the company has grown considerably, adding amenities, and continues to be based on a set of founding principles. Kretschmer says, “Our goal is for our guests to go home with a positive experience and memories that will last forever. We are committed to our

consistent basis and they constantly seek ways to make the experience the best possible. The guide staff are among the elite in the business. They are licensed by New York State, certified as First Responders or EMTs and more than half are A.C.A. certified Swift Water Rescue Technicians. The river guides have a median tenure of 10 years, and they utilize the latest technology to ensure that on each trip safety is a top
priority. Adventure Calls Outfitters’ safety record is among the top within the Paddlesports industry. River raft guide Paul Brown is starting his fourth season as a river guide. He says, “My job as a guide is to run somewhere between the first and the last raft, to entertain guests and to watch out for all the rafts in our tour to make sure everything is safe.” Meeting and talking to people from all around the world is Brown’s favorite part of his job. “People are very friendly and love to talk about where they come from and they are very interested in finding out about what life is like here in our part of the world. It is really fun to talk with the guests and help them to feel comfortable and enjoy the experience. It is all about making it a nice trip for the guests,” Brown says. He also says that viewing the gorge from the bottom up is a whole different experience than viewing it from the top to the bottom which is the view from the trails. Adventure Calls Outfitters also offers other activities including team building, a ropes course and paddle instruction. They have special packages, trips and events throughout their season that ranges from the first week in April through the last week in October. There are barbecue packages with several menu selections from burgers to strip steaks to enjoy after the rafting experience. There are also camping packages that include rafting, supper and breakfast, tent camping and a variety of other activities to enjoy during the camping stay. There are Interpretive Trips where a naturalist accompanies the river tour offering narration during frequent stops along the way. Adventure Calls Outfitters’ website contains all the information needed to plan and reserve time for a river raft ride on the Genesee River. Find helpful hints and answers to questions such as, “Is this for me?”, “What to Wear?”, “How deep is the water?” and more. “We have families from all over the northeast and midwest that come to view this beautiful part of our country. We help visitors to plan their stay in our area, and promote tourism and businesses within our surrounding communities,” Kretschmer says. Visit www.adventure-calls.com for more information.

Erie Canalway calls for photo contest entries As New York celebrates the 200th anniversary of the building of the Erie Canal in 2017, amateur and professional photographers are invited to capture the canal corridor’s distinctive sense of place for the 12th annual Erie Canalway Photo Contest. Winning photos will be featured in the 2018 Erie Canalway calendar. (Family Features) When there’s a new, adorable puppy in the house, it can be difficult to know what to do next. It’s an exciting world for puppies with lots to learn and discover. As they are mastering fundamental skills like walking on a leash and resisting the urge to chew up the furniture, it is also a good time to start building habits for a healthy, pest-free and disease-free life. These tips can help you keep your puppy happy, adventurous and, most importantly, healthy. •Keep puppies inside the safety of their homes or backyards until they are protected from infectious diseases with vaccines and from harmful pests by some form of flea and tick control. •Talk to your veterinarian about vaccines when your puppy is 6-8 weeks old. •After 12 weeks of age, puppies can try convenient and effective flea and tick control options like the easy-to-use Adams Flea & Tick Collar for Dogs & Puppies, which comes in a convenient two-pack to protect against fleas, ticks and mosquitoes for a full year. Keep in mind that heat and humidity can speed up the flea reproductive cycle and don’t be caught off guard as warm weather sets in. •After the final booster vaccination and initial rabies vaccine have been administered at approximately 16 weeks of age, puppies should be well-protected against
disease and able to explore the great outdoors. •Get ready with the proper gear. Look for a sturdy leash and collar or adjustable harness that fits your puppy. Given this playful age, it is important to have the right supplies so your puppy doesn’t accidentally get loose or wander off. •Responsibly identify your puppy with a collar tag and microchip implant. Proactive steps can save you a lot of heartache if your puppy ever gets lost. Talk to your veterinarian about available options. •Before heading out for a walk, think ahead of your pup’s need for water. It is important to keep your puppy hydrated, especially during warmer weather, to avoid overheating. •Mark your calendar to keep track of veterinary visits and when it is time to reapply flea and tick treatment. With Adams Flea & Tick Collars for Dogs & Puppies, one collar provides six months of protection compared to monthly, potentially messy topical treatments. Taking proactive steps now to protect your pup can help save time and money later in life, but most importantly, it can lead to a healthy, happy life for your furry friend. Learn more about flea and tick control and pet safety at adamspetcare.com.

Changing weather patterns leave homeowners underinsured (BPT) - The U.S. has experienced significant shifts in the frequency, severity and locations of natural disasters - including floods, hurricanes, tornadoes and wildfires - during the past decade. As a result, more than 800 emergency or disaster declarations were made in the U.S. from 2005 to 2015, according to FEMA data. The insured losses stemming from natural catastrophes such as these average $24 billion annually. Homeowners face severe risks from these disasters, yet many have not connected the dots between these shifts and the impact on their home insurance needs. A recent survey commissioned by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) found that fewer than 22 percent of homeowners view weather patterns or disasters as an important factor when updating their homeowners insurance policy. Missing these links can be costly. “Changing weather patterns can dramatically impact what insurance should be carried on a property,” says Mike Consedine, NAIC chief executive officer. “When homeowners don’t regularly review their policies, important gaps in coverage can be missed. You should re-evaluate your risk profile at least once a year to ensure your existing homeowners policy provides the protection you need.” Despite Consedine’s recommendation, the survey revealed that 56 percent of homeowners have not reviewed their insurance policies in more than a year. Fourteen percent are unsure when - if ever - they last reviewed their policies. If it’s been awhile since your last insurance review, there’s no better time than the present. When evaluating your policy, consider the following questions: Am I now at risk? Are earthquakes, wildfires or other disasters now a threat in my state or region? Do I need flood insurance? Some incidents
such as floods are not covered by a typical homeowners policy, so you’ll need additional coverage. What has changed in my home? If you’ve moved in with your significant other or an adult child has returned home, consider the impact their belongings will have on your coverage. Create a home inventory and update it annually. The NAIC’s MyHome Scr.App.book app (available for iPhone and Android) lets you quickly capture images and descriptions of your possessions. Inflatables 101: Tips for choosing the perfect pool float (BPT) - Visit any retailer’s pool aisle or website, and you’ll quickly realize a challenge your parents and grandparents never had to face - more pool inflatables to choose from than you could ever imagine. Whether you’re shopping for a larger-than-life float island or something to help keep your nonswimming little one safer in the pool, the sheer range of options can be overwhelming, but exciting. “Shopping for pool inflatables is supposed to be fun, not overwhelming,” says Marvin Natareno, an inflatables expert with Intex Recreation Corp., the leading manufacturer of novelty pool inflatables. “Yet there are so many choices these days that comparison shopping for the best inflatable for your needs can be a challenge.” Natareno offers some tips for choosing inflatables that will help keep your summer fun going swimmingly:
16999
Safety first Most importantly, follow strict safety practices around pools. When it comes to floats, practicing good safety habits, setting and following rules, carefully reading instruction manuals and vigilant supervision can greatly reduce the likelihood of injury as well as reduce injury severity. Take time to review all safety information to assist in keeping you and your family safe this summer: www.intexcorp.com/safety-information-pools.
Cost doesn’t always equal quality When shopping for a reasonably priced, quality inflatable, Natareno recommends

Long live your inflatables Inspect inflatables every time you use them, looking for any tears or sign of wear that can be repaired before they jeopardize the structural integrity of the toy or float. Although chlorinated pool water does a good job of keeping inflatables clean, using them at the beach or lake could mean some dirt. If inflatables become dirty, clean them with a soft brush and liquid soap and water.
Quality counts When investing in a large novelty float, quality certainly counts. The last thing you want is for it to fizzle flat during summer fun. “If you’re investing in a large novelty float, you want to know it will last for many summers, not just one,” Natareno says. “Floats with quality PVC construction, well-sealed seams and colors that retain their vibrancy are ones to consider, especially for a more active group.” Intex offers high-quality floats with everyone’s favorite themes, including the Mega Toucan and Mega Pegasus Island Floats, the Watermelon Island and Popsicle Float.

Inflatables for kids Beach balls and classic rings might have been the first inflatable toys for kids, but today there are many more options, from inflatable arm bands meant to help stabilize little ones in the water to whale and plane-shaped ride ons. Manufacturers like Intex make a wide variety of inflatable toys for kids and offer some of the bestselling and most popular tubes and lounges that can be used from pools to rivers and lakes. “Take a quick poll of your kids and see which style of float would be of interest for this pool season. Consider adding new ones each month as the season evolves for more creative fun,” adds Natareno.
Grownup fun and relaxation When shopping for an adult-sized novelty float, Natareno says, keep comfort, quality and originality in mind. Today’s floats can provide a unique, unexpected water experience. For example, Intex is the only manufacturer offering a rodeo bull-themed float. The INFLATABULL Rodeo Bull Ride On Float provides a “bull-riding” experience in the water and is around $50 at select retailers both in-store and online.

looking at the construction and materials, and suggests looking for a brand name that you recognize and that has a long business history. “Large-scale inflatables are very trendy right now thanks to social media and celebrity commentary,” Natareno says. “You don’t have to pay a premium price to get a quality inflatable that will provide hours of fun season after season.”

Summer Guide 2017
Suburban News & Hamlin-Clarkson Herald
Tasty summer fun (Creative Outlet) - Of all the things to do in the summer, perhaps none is more fun or tastier than making ice cream. There are many ways you can go about making ice cream from using an ice cream maker to hand-mixing it in coffee cans or bags. Here is a simple method using plastic bags. First, you’ll need to gather all of the right stuff. You will need a pint-sized bag and a gallon-sized bag, plus enough ice to fill the gallon-sized bag halfway full. You’ll also need 1 cup half and half, 2 tablespoons sugar, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, 1/2 cup kosher or rock salt, and your favorite add-ins like chocolate chips, nuts or fruit. When you have everything gathered and are ready to begin, follow these instructions. First, combine the half and half, sugar and vanilla in the pint-sized bag, seal the bag tightly and set it aside. Next, place the salt and ice in the gallon-sized bag and shake it around to combine. Grab the sealed pint-sized bag and insert it into the gallon-sized bag, making sure the smaller bag is buried in the salt and ice.
Wr a p t h e bags in a towel and shake them vigorously until the mixture hardens, about five minutes. Feel the mixture. If it is too soft, shake it some more. If it is fine, you may remove it from the bag and place it into a bowl. Toss in some chocolate chips, nuts, fruit or whatever, and enjoy! Making ice cream with bags is easy and quick, and you can make as much as you want in as many flavors as your heart desires. Just add chocolate syrup or some other flavored extract in place of the vanilla. You can have some friends over and have a little ice cream party if you wish. Toss everything into bags, pass them out and get shaking!

On Your Way to
Four ways to vacation on the water this summer (BPT) - Want to get away this summer? Skip the plane ride or long car trip and get out on the water. Whether it’s an hour after work cruising, a morning of fishing or a weekend of watersports, boating provides all the benefits of vacation at your convenience, close to home. In a recent study by Discover Boating, four out of five Americans said being around water relaxes them, and 72 percent feel healthier after spending time on the water. With Americans working longer hours, the need to take vacation time is greater than ever. According to the U.S. Travel Association, four in 10 Americans are not using all their paid time off. Boating benefits a person’s overall wellbeing and can be more accessible than many think. In fact, millions of Americans go boating each year on more than 15 million boats in the U.S., according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association. “Boating offers the opportunity to get away from it all without going very far from home, allowing you to disconnect from stress on land, enjoy the sunshine and fresh air, and have fun with your friends and family,” says Carl Blackwell, president of Discover Boating. “Vacation time doesn’t need to be reserved for long trips - you can enjoy all the benefits of vacation more frequently and close to home when you go boating.” Want to go fishing, sailing, wakesurfing, cruising or ride a personal watercraft? Whether on vacation or staycation, these insider tips provide fun, stress-free ways to get on the water this summer. Take a class Sign up for a boating lesson to hone your powerboating, sailing or watersports skills by mastering the basics while having fun
along the way. Popular options around the U.S. include boating classes, on-water training courses, watersports camps, youth boating programs and more.
Hamlin Beach
Rent a boat Rental options are available on most waterways and provide hourly or daily access to a variety of boat types. Rental outfitters should provide tutorials on operating a boat, share safety instructions and offer suggestions on destinations. New to the mix are peer-to-peer rentals, allowing you to rent someone else’s boat, which usually includes insurance coverage and captains for hire. Share the fun You don’t need to own a boat to join a boat club. Clubs and shared ownership programs allow you to share a boat with others, split the costs and book your time on the boat online. These clubs and programs also maintain, clean, insure and store the boats and many provide on-water training. Float your own boat There are no limits to going on vacation when you own a boat. Chart your own course to boat ownership by visiting DiscoverBoating.com, where you’ll find a boat selector and loan calculator to help you determine your budget and identify the different types of boats that fit your lifestyle and interests. Once you’ve narrowed down your search, the site can connect you with manufacturers whose boats best fit your needs and wants. Find ways to get on the water by using Discover Boating’s Go Boating Today tool. Just enter your zip code to find rentals, classes, boat clubs and more close to home.

Create stylish shade While an umbrella or a roll-up sunshade provides a fast and easy way to block direct sun, they can quickly fade or become a dingy eyesore. A stylish alternative is to cast refreshing shade with a gazebo or arbor. With either option, you also can create a lush and fragrant grotto using climbing vines such as roses, clematis, wisteria or honeysuckle. For a weekend do-it-yourself project, look for gazebo and arbor plans on popular social media sites like Pinterest or Houzz. If you prefer to have someone else do the work, many deck builders will complete the project for you without breaking the bank.

Cool deck time fun in the summer sun
Thank You
your home?
Now, homeowners throughout the U.S. are installing these systems on their decks or porches. The ultrafine droplets of water created by these systems can cool the air as much as 35 degrees. In addition to providing cool and refreshing moisture on hot summer days, some manufacturers report the systems help repel flying insects and clear the air of smoke and pollen. Easy-to-install misters are available online or from your local home improvement store, starting at under $100. Don’t forget the deck surface Many deck surfaces become uncomfortably hot in direct sun. The problem is especially acute for dark-colored deck boards, which absorb heat throughout the day, as well as some dense composite boards that hold heat. As a result, rather than a comfortable stroll to your favorite chair, you might end up hot-footing it across a scorching deck. An overly hot deck is especially problematic for young children and pets, whose feet are more heat sensitive. Whether you’re building a new deck or upgrading an existing one, these three ways to beat the heat will provide you with a cool and relaxing outdoor spot to snooze, cook or entertain friends and family, even on the hottest summer days.

Summer Guide 2017
Suburban News & Hamlin-Clarkson Herald
Off to the farm market (Creative Outlet) - For some people, summer would not be summer without fresh produce to munch on. You can find seasonal produce at most grocery stores, but if you want to eat local, support area farmers and keep Mother Earth happy, shopping at local farm markets may be the way to go. Here are some tips to ensure you make the most of your experience. Do some research Find out what grows in your area at what time and know what to expect at the market. You’ll find asparagus in the spring, sweet corn in the summer and pumpkins in the fall. Whatever you find will be the freshest and tastiest available, brought to you directly from the fields. There will be no gassing to promote ripening or longterm storage or shipping. The produce will be left in the fields until fully ripened and then brought to market. While you’re at the market, ask around and find out what’s coming. That way, you can start planning meals ahead.
Make a list Think about what you plan to cook for the week and write a list of the produce you need. This will help you stay focused while shopping and ensure you get what you came for. It will also ensure little of what you bring home goes to waste.

Enjoy the
Taste of Summer
Shop like a pro Walk through the market once before you make any buys. This will allow you to see what is available, and give you the chance to add items you want to try to your list. Inspect produce carefully and choose the best. Don’t be fooled by deals. There is no point in bringing home a bunch of overripe bananas unless you plan to turn them into bread or muffins right away. Farm markets offer a lot, from fresh produce and flowers to homemade foods and crafts. Enjoy, but plan ahead for your trip to ensure you get some good buys.

We Have Both...
Sit Down Dinner & Buffet
There’s nothing to do (Creative Outlet) - While children may look forward to summer, parents may dread it due to the boredom that typically sets in after a few weeks. Here are some suggestions of ways to entertain the children without breaking the bank. Find out how handy you are. Dismantle old machines, like telephones and radios, to see how they work. Then try putting them back together. Put on a play. Have your children write the screenplay, design the sets and costumes, and make the tickets and advertising. Check with local appliance stores for large boxes to use for the sets and dye some old sheets for the curtains. Make costumes from old clothes. Plant a garden. Find a suitable site and help your children figure out what will grow best there. Once everything is planted, have your kids take turns caring for the garden, watering and weeding it. Help your children harvest the vegetables and cook a meal using them. Go on a scavenger hunt. Hide a list of items for each child and give them a certain time to find them. Have an egg and spoon race. You will need a raw egg and spoon for each child. Line them up at the starting line and instruct them to try to race to the finish without dropping the egg from the spoon
and breaking it. Should they drop the egg and it remains intact, they must return to the starting line and start over. The first participant to reach the finish line without breaking the egg wins. There are many other ways you can keep children entertained for the rest of the summer. You can: • Pick up some books from the library and read them together • Learn a foreign language or sign language • Start a collection or hobby • Organize a neighborhood block party • Visit a zoo, museum, nature center or some other place of interest • Volunteer at a shelter, hospital or senior home • Go biking, hiking or backyard camping • Walk around the town or village and observe the architecture • Visit a farm market and cook whatever you buy • Redecorate a room • Hold a garage sale • Play games indoors and outdoors • Make crafts With some thought and creativity, you can keep the children entertained this summer and away from the TV, computer and video games.
