QUICK

After the rain

Heavy rain and flooding can cause problems for your pool if left unchecked. As we roll into springtime — and the rainy weather that time of the year often brings — we’ve created a step-by-step guide to quickly getting things back on track.

If you aren’t using a pool cover, heavy rain and blustery winds are guaranteed to increase the amount of dirt and debris in your pool. In addition, an influx of rainwater alters the water chemistry in the following ways: • It introduces phosphates. • It dilutes chlorine, which encourages algal growth. • It dilutes the salt and mineral content of the water.

We recommend the following steps to get your pool back to sparkling.

As a final word of advice, no matter how bad you think the water looks after a storm, don’t be tempted to drain the pool. Floodwater and heavy rain saturate the foundations and swimming pools should never be drained until ground conditions have dried to at least the depth of the pool. All but the most severely affected pools can be revived after floods, storms and fire without the need to drain them. If you need advice on getting your pool back in order, speak to a SPASA member or visit www.poolspalife.com.au.

STEP 1

Clean the pool of dirt and debris. Remove large items, such as branches, and scoop out as much leaf litter as you can. Empty the skimmer and the pump basket. In the case of very dirty water — where soil has been flushed into the pool, for example — you may need to use a flocculant. It’s a reasonably simple process, but it does involve a few steps, a bit of chemistry and will take some time. Follow the flocculant label instructions carefully or speak to a SPASA member for advice.

STEP 2

Test and re-balance the pool water. You may need to add salt and minerals to bring levels back to normal. Always follow the instructions when adding anything to the pool water.

STEP 3

Shock dose the pool.

STEP 4

Add the required dose of phosphate remover to eliminate unwanted phosphates that encourage algal growth.

STEP 5

If the water is cloudy, use a clarifier.

STEP 6

Add a winteriser product or algaecide treatment.
